it's like saying good bye to someone who you care for the most while spending one last day of fun with them, not knowing if you will ever see them again
Have you ever experienced something so profoundly beautiful that you become genuinely sad after you experience it, because you know it will be a long time before you ever feel that way again? This movie does that to me every time I watch it.
this song is on my head even the movie was on my head it was a beautiful song and movie... thank you Hayao Miyazaki we appreciate the movie you've made that made us being touched by the heart by the great movie called "spirited away"
I always wondered what kind of man Joe Hisaishi was, what kind of man could write this genius music. But when I saw him playing, it all suddenly made sense.
This is probably the only song I've gotten emotional over in the past half decade. Something about the bittersweet atmosphere pouring out of this song that ignites a strong nostalgic feel makes me want to tear up...
Z .z Haven't you seen monuments or historical paintings? They have been remembered throughout all these years and has been treasured greatly. What about Sailor Moon? It's an old anime, but everyone knows it. And, just Sailor Moon, Spirited Away will never be forgotten. I believe there is a line in the movie "it's always inside you even if you don't remember it". I don't think I will ever forget a movie as great as this.
Frappuccino Sailor Moon hasnt been forgotten because 1. it is still ongoing. 2. it gets advertised, and 3. people talk about it. Spirited Away is not talked about. If you ask anyone about it, they most likely don't know what you're talking about.
This is one of those movies that is so beautiful and accurate, not to mention timeless, that it makes sense how listening to this song would bring people to tears. I have only seen this movie once, and being 100% honest, the movie was so brilliant, that i had the songs stuck in my head, the scenes playing through my thoughts, and the chills running through me whenever i thought of certain parts of the movie... for nearly a MONTH! I haven't seen all of his movies yet, but from the ones i have watched, i must agree that Spirited Away is among the best! I recommend this movie to anyone who hasn't seen it yet! Like. Seriously. Watch it... now...
I still cant get over the scene when chihiro parted with Haku its still fresh in my mind "Go and don't look back" Haku new that looking back would only hurt T~T
Kawaii Ecchi its a biblical reference as well. Not too sure which it was myself, but something about God telling a woman to leave without looking back, and she was so consumed by curiosity that she looked back. Idk what happened next lol, not familiar with the bible, just something that another spirited away fan had pointed out
Rabbitgirl57 it´s from a mythological story called Orpheus and Eurydike. Orpheus is allowed to take Eurydike out of Hades if he goes the whole way back while Eurydike goes behind him. He is not allowed to look back the whole time. A couple of metres before the end he just turns around and Eurydike is getting pulled into the Hades again. Sad story...
_When this man passes away one day, who will be the one replacing him? What such profound miracle will be there to replace this unfathomable masterpiece? This is truly the way of life, the circle of life indeed. The unseen mechanics of the human heart, is surely something beautiful. What will be there to fill the void in my beating heart? What will be there for us to witness? What will be there for the individuals in the distant future witness? Certainly this feeling is something undeniably irreplaceable. What do you call it again?_
There is so much beauty in this performance. I think the best part is that the audience doesn't clap while the song is ending, but rather waits for Hisaishi to really take a moment from his performance and then move away from the piano to give him applause.
I'm from America but lived in Japan from when I was 6 to 10. A couple of weeks before I moved back, my school watched Spirited Away as to say goodbye (My school was a private one founded by the company my dad worked at. We were from different countries but none of us were Japanese). I loved that movie, even though it didn't finish. I still haven't seen the whole thing because for some reason, and I don't know why, I'm scared. I changed when I moved back. I made much more friends, developed a sense of humor, and seemed happy. I stopped talking about Japan and the emotions tied into it because whenever I did, people would walk away because I would get too nostalgic and seem antisocial. When I thought about it alone, I would always start to cry. So I started forgetting. Now with every passing day a bit more falls out of my head. I'm starting to forget what it was. I was starting to forget who I was. I'm trying to run away from my own memories so I can be the happy kid I usually am. Now it's been a few years. I'm going to be a teenager in 5 months and I am the person I wanted to be for so long, a normal one. Overtime I've learned a burn can heal, but it leaves a scar that seems to never go away. No matter how much you try it will stay. It starts to change you. You get annoyed by it and start to cry. One day, you might cover it up successfully and forget its there until you see it again and the memories start to flow in, even if they aren't clear. Even though it's painful, you try to remember how happy you were before you got that burn, and it makes you smile as you remember the person you were, and, even if it's a tiny bit, still are. As the years pass I get more angry that I can't go back for a long time, but all anger is attached to some sort of sadness. Sometimes we need to cry, as it's a part of healing the scar, even though it will never be gone. Sorry for the long comment. I know most people won't even read this comment, but I needed to do this to help me let go and remember. *Edit: Hey guys just an FYI I wrote this comment when I was 12 and my mental health wasn't in a great place but I'm doing a lot better. I'm happy with my life and I'm about to graduate high school. I'm going to relearn Japanese in college so I can go back someday. I still get notifications on this thing and I just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone for the kind words you've all said over the years. Some stories and responses I get on this thing are so beautiful and touching and I'm so amazed by it all
You should really watch it again, you'll see it in a different way, specially because it deals with a lot of the things you are going through, all the characters in the film are forgetting who they are, Chihiro for starters isn't even called Chihiro the whole film, also Haku who thanks Chihiro for helping him remember, the Witch, everyone is a different person when the film ends, embrace the future, smile, the past will always be part of you whether you remember or not :)
For me, I love listening to electronic dance music and other modern types of music. But the music from Ghibli, is the most beautiful type music there is in my opinion. It's different than most music. It gives you this indescribable feeling.
Koshi There is EDM as good as this, that makes you go crazy about it just as about this. Just not in the same way emotionally. I'm talking about Aleksander Vinter/Savant here.
my grandpa died just yesterday and it was a very emotional time with many tears. I've just listened to this and have just been crying my heart out its brought out one of the deepest emotions I've ever felt.
This man is one of the main reasons why I prefer Studio Ghibli to Disney. He creates much more genuine and heartfelt soundtracks (especially compared to Frozens Let It Go.. God that song grates on my ears)
"Spirited Away" has an amazing soundtrack! I love Joe Hisaishi's music! Seriously, "Frozen" shouldn't have deserved the title "one of the best animated movies", personally, I found the movie good, but not phenomenal. Also, I didn't really like the song "Let it Go" that much. Hayao Miyazaki has an unique and authentic style. You can't compare these two movies, with Frozen almost being an "adaptation".
Well it was loosely inspired by "the Snow Queen" but I do mean 'loosely inspired'. If you know the original tale by Hans Christian Andersen, it's not very similar except that there's a 'queen of winter'.
There's just so much depth and emotion to this piece. Clearly thought out well cause if you listen carefully you can actually connect different parts of the piece to different parts of the film. Lovely score.
This is my favorite song from any movie soundtrack ever... EVEEERRRR!!! From my favorite animated movie ever. This is the type of movie that just isn't a movie anymore, it's an experience. An experience that I feel everyone should take.
This song and the movie will never get old to me. I still feel the same emotions listening to it now as I did years ago. It is so simple, so sweet, and so pure. Thank you Joe Hisaishi for performing this wonderful piece and thank you Hayao Miyazaki, for creating a part of my childhood that I could never experience on my own.
sry for bad english im from germany the movie shows you a dreamworld where everything can happen and this song will take you there will be with you on the journey to this world and shows you the love and friendship the up and down of live it hug you and will never let you go
This song makes me revisit all the bad and good memories I have lived through and it makes me sad that I wasn’t able to appreciate the people around me and actually enjoy life which makes me want to tear up
While I'm listening to this i feel a sudden stroke of nostalgia from my childhood like your just lying under the tree sheltering from the heat of summer haze and a cool breeze keeps blowing from a open field maybe a meadow and you're starting to feel sleepy just by looking at the blue sky and white clouds.
I just can't describe what I'm feeling right now with a couple of simple words. I've been watching Spirited Away ever since I was a child, I grew up with this melody echoing at the back of my head. The tears that are moisting my eyes right now are not just cold emotionless waterdrops. I can feel it, deep inside me. I can sense the love I have for this movie. It's not just a kids movie, it's my whole life! I really really can't explain how I feel but I want yah all to know that this song, no, this movie manage to touch my sensitive heart
Jahanji Don't play it too frequently then. :3 It's been months sinve I last played this, and now that I'm listening to it again, my feels are coming back. I wanna be a kid again.
Whenever I hear this piece, I think of the happiest times I spent with one of my best friends in high school. She unfortunately passed away to a rare form of bone cancer at 17. My memories of her live in this song.
Spirited Away, Howl's Castle and Laputa got me into Ghibli's animation and these amazing pieces :) Sure you can appreciate the ol' Chopin and what not, but even composers of the now have this glow about them just like previous generations.
This music reminds of my sad memories and this music is telling me you have hope, you have happiness, you have your reason to live.Thank you Joe Hisaishi
Miyazaki and Hisaishi are a once-in-a-lifetime happening. Their synergy is amazing. the perfect music for the perfect stories. I feel their souls know each other since a long time. I wish their collaborations could get more recognition, because we're witnessing 2 giants in their respective arts. thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart!
The sweetness, the joy of summer which has arrived. The bitterness, the sadness of knowing that it will quickly fly away, and through the melancholy of Autumn it will come the lonely, silent winter. But then, the delicate hope of spring, and then we will meet the joyful summer again. I can hear and see all the seasons, all the passing of time itself in this music. That is why I say it is just magical.
I get the feeling like my soul is weightless when I hear his music. It's a breath a fresh air, when everything seems chaotic. I'm sure everyone who has heard his work, also feels the same way.
I heard this hundreds of times from 9yrs old to now. This song is reminds of what it’s like to be a kid, a teenager, to grow up, to get married, to get divorced, to have my own child, to find love again, to be sad, to be happy... It’s everything.
+Princess “湯女” Zelda get a really cheap second hand one, no matter what it sounds like you'll at least learn the positions, chords, songs and while you play that you can save up for a cheap medicore piano and that might take you a few months but at least you'll be learning while you wait. Do you work btw? If you work you could start saving up some money
Okay my ritual of the year is here. Hisashi sensei is still the only one whose art has a direct line to my soul. I so wish I could see him in concert well as long as there is life there is hope. Thx hisashi sensei for having done one of the masterpiece of our century.
Now that I think about it my 4th/5th grade teacher was responsible for introducing anime to me at such a young age i remember him showing us princess mononoke. We watched that like 5 times in class it was so awesome. I remember reading the manga for spirited away back when I was in the 5th grade. I didn't know there was a movie for it until my teacher said we were going to watch it, but every damn time we were going to watch it I got sick and had to miss school :( just my luck lol. I'm going to be graduating this year as a teacher and i hope the new generations appreciate these type of movies and the compositions that bring the movie to life ^^.
You had a teacher that showed you anime?!? Why don't I have such a cool teacher?! And Princess Mononoke too! One of my favorite movies of all time! There were a lot of pretty violent scenes and your teacher let you watch it? what a rebel :D
yeah i know it had violent scenes, which is kinda funny now that i think about it lol he was also teaching us Japanese, at the time i had no idea what i was saying lol
Only thing that ruined it for me, is on the track you can get on iTunes, the ending is the violent loud part, so when I try to fall asleep, its like Im sitting on a beach...then a tsunami hits :p
Learning this song on piano atm, and it's given me an entirely new appreciation for the little flourishes and complexities that go into this performance. So good!
1:56 arrrrgh my favourite part! I just love this section. The sound it feels so peaceful. I'm currently learning this piece and I'm going to perform it at a concert. I like a bit of rubato throu ghout the song as it feels like it gives a bit of emotion. What do you guys think?
I don't know why, but I love watching him perform! It's just so mesmerizing watching as he plays the music not only with his hands but his entire being!
I was listening to a bunch of really nice piano melodies as I watched the meteor showers last Saturday and then I chose this one. The second I turned it on I look up at the sky from my iPod to see the brightest meteor I've seen the whole night for just a flash of a second. I made a wish :)
If you're studying to this, good luck If you're doing homework to this, hope you get amazing grades, If you're crying to this, hope you know things will get better If you're being happy to this, hope you stay that way If you're working out to this, hope you get the size/body you want If you're cleaning to this, hope you get it to your standers If you're waking up to this, hope you have a good day If you're going to sleep to this, goodnight If you're here to listen to because you want to fill the silence, hope you enjoy the sound and hope your day will get better.
It elicits sentimental feelings but also shows some lights of hope. The movie is a hidden tragedy though that is why somehow the music sounds so sad...Such a great piano piece that contains enormous emotions. And how incredible 久石譲 is that he rarely uses complex chords in his compositions but he always expresses both his mind and music in the purest way.
Childhood .. 2005 was when I watched this movie. I remember when I was happy not to know the world that was unknown to me. This feeling of a time that does not come back .. This song even back that for a few minutes, that feeling. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to experience those days..☺
Now that I am 30 years old, when I hear this music again, it reminds me of my childhood memories. The music I heard for the first time moved me to tears (2023/10)
it's like saying good bye to someone who you care for the most while spending one last day of fun with them, not knowing if you will ever see them again
reminds me of Haku and Chihiro indeed..
BlackStar Freeman So very sad..
Stephanie Yun but in a beautiful way, leaving you hopeful

Andy Zhang It's not just you.
+Andy Zhang You are not alone...
Agree.. It makes you want to tear up but somehow theres a warm, fuzzy feeling listening to this grand piece of art.
+Andy Zhang What you're saying isn't fit for any word but it makes perfect sense. I understand what you're saying.
+Andy Zhang ye uncle andy
I'm a japanese and I'm so impressed with that this song moves such many people around the world and gets them back to their childhood as it does me.
+神谷 Of course!

Yeah, you're right. Spirited Away was my first japanese movie that I ever watched so...It's my favourite Hayao Miyazaki's movie.

It makes me sad that one day, the world wont remember this, nor be able to experience it. What a tragedy art can be.
And just imagine.. There were probably people from centuries ago feeling the same thing...
Just pass this song onto your kids and their kids and their kids' kids and so on so forth. If enough people do it, this will never be forgotten

かなり前のことだけど、この曲を生で聴いた時涙が出たのを覚えている。

Imagine his inspiration while writing the song. Must be so beautiful.

There is so much beauty in this performance. I think the best part is that the audience doesn't clap while the song is ending, but rather waits for Hisaishi to really take a moment from his performance and then move away from the piano to give him applause.

Memories are what makes the person and their personality people are just haters.
While reading your comment I thought that the music was perfectly fitting!

I want this song on my wedding lol

if you like this you should definitely give darude - sandstorm a listen
Ryken Edm is the best but nothing beat musics from Studio Ghibli
It's almost like a feeling of great sadness combined with nostalgia. Only studio ghibli movies can evoke such feelings.
I feel like a lot Japanese music has “nostalgia” as an underlying sub-genre.
Koshi There is EDM as good as this, that makes you go crazy about it just as about this. Just not in the same way emotionally.

You can just see the emotion on his face. This is a man who is not just a cold calculating musician- he is the feeling behind music.
this is my favorite melody from the movie. I love the slow parts the most. so tranquil and calm. I love pieceful music.

一発でその場面が浮かぶ。
音楽って凄いよな。
I've listened and played this soo many times that it's not as amazing as it used to be.. I hate when that happens.
I know what you mean...I hate it too
Jahanji Good thing is, there are other songs. And there will always be other songs ^^
Jahanji Don't play it too frequently then. :3 It's been months sinve I last played this, and now that I'm listening to it again, my feels are coming back. I wanna be a kid again.
Jahanji Lucky you. I would like to play this but I'm so noob on piano...
+Jahanji Yea, me too, if you repeat something often, the feels and meaning kind of die down.
Just crying watching this.
The beauty of music... the very voice of emotions...
Whenever I hear this piece, I think of the happiest times I spent with one of my best friends in high school. She unfortunately passed away to a rare form of bone cancer at 17. My memories of her live in this song.
Spirited Away, Howl's Castle and Laputa got me into Ghibli's animation and these amazing pieces :)
Sure you can appreciate the ol' Chopin and what not, but even composers of the now have this glow about them just like previous generations.
this song always gives me hope
This music reminds of my sad memories and this music is telling me you have hope, you have happiness, you have your reason to live.Thank you Joe Hisaishi
Emon Sikder Yeah, for me Spirited Away best animation and drama
+Iohann Krauser ikr no movie can replace that
Rin Kagamine yup, it's so deep..
259 people who don't know what true music is

I start tearing up at 2:20. :')
The emotion.... it gets me everytime!!! We love you Joe!!!!
started crying even before watching
I get the feeling like my soul is weightless when I hear his music. It's a breath a fresh air, when everything seems chaotic. I'm sure everyone who has heard his work, also feels the same way.
I heard this hundreds of times from 9yrs old to now. This song is reminds of what it’s like to be a kid, a teenager, to grow up, to get married, to get divorced, to have my own child, to find love again, to be sad, to be happy... It’s everything.
Fifth time replaying this and still crying.
I have listened to this song every week since it was uploaded to UA-cam 15 years ago. It takes me away to a special place in my imagination
Listening to this transports me to another world, a world whose laws are different from our own, nostalgia.
Goose bumps every time.
The movie was released 20 years ago and it never ages. Still crying like a baby just like watching it the first time. Thanks for this masterpiece!
im crying right now... Spirited Away was/is my childhood movie. This song is literally amazing...
Im always in awe how a pianist can play such a complex song simply by memory, it seems almost impossible
He did compose the song himself, lol
+Drgnwire It's still quite a remarkable feat.
+Princess “湯女” Zelda it's never too late
+Princess “湯女” Zelda you can do it yourself as well
+Princess “湯女” Zelda get a really cheap second hand one, no matter what it sounds like you'll at least learn the positions, chords, songs and while you play that you can save up for a cheap medicore piano and that might take you a few months but at least you'll be learning while you wait.
My favorite song composed by Joe Hisaishi. One Summers Day everybody :D
*:'D
Only thing that ruined it for me, is on the track you can get on iTunes, the ending is the violent loud part, so when I try to fall asleep, its like Im sitting on a beach...then a tsunami hits :p
That's exactly what I thought! Part of the reason why I love this version a bit more.
Cave Johnson that's how the actual track is. that part is a piece in the music. it's just another movement.
ああ、何て美しいメロディだろう。
ジャンルや技術を超えた美しさを感じる。
his chords are.... so.... amazing...
This melody makes me have mixed feelings of hope and sadness
Its a master piece :,)
I learned how to play this on my piano!!! But its nothing compared to him. he is a legend and is amazing : )
Learning this song on piano atm, and it's given me an entirely new appreciation for the little flourishes and complexities that go into this performance. So good!
Ian Terada was it difficult?
Hi, where can i get the sheet for this version? played like in this video.
1:56 arrrrgh my favourite part! I just love this section. The sound it feels so peaceful. I'm currently learning this piece and I'm going to perform it at a concert. I like a bit of rubato throu ghout the song as it feels like it gives a bit of emotion. What do you guys think?
it's 2014 and has been 13 years passed since I ever saw Spirited Away. This song has always been my favorite :')
wait a second... wasnt the movie released 2005 or something? >.>
it was released on 2001, I also watched it on 2001.
www.imdb.com/title/tt0245429/
Nox F. oh ok thanks i got confused :D P.S also my favorite.
Nox F. You watched it in Japanese?
I don't know why, but I love watching him perform! It's just so mesmerizing watching as he plays the music not only with his hands but his entire being!
the feelings he put into it. wow. this's a masterpiece. very touching and relaxing.
千と千尋の神隠し、記憶を無くしてもう一度劇場で観たい作品ですね。
For me, this is the best piece of music ever written.
There is no other suitable word to describe this other than BEAUTIFUL. Just beautiful :')
Nessie Jr you're rigth
千与千寻是世界上最好的动画片和他的音乐也是世界上最好听的音乐
Oh how I just wish Spirited Away would always remain permanent in Cinemas. I would never get bored watching it over and over again.
I was listening to a bunch of really nice piano melodies as I watched the meteor showers last Saturday and then I chose this one. The second I turned it on I look up at the sky from my iPod to see the brightest meteor I've seen the whole night for just a flash of a second. I made a wish :)
What an extraordinary musical mind!!! I'm literally spirited away!
If you're studying to this, good luck
If you're doing homework to this, hope you get amazing grades,
If you're crying to this, hope you know things will get better
If you're being happy to this, hope you stay that way
If you're working out to this, hope you get the size/body you want
If you're cleaning to this, hope you get it to your standers
If you're waking up to this, hope you have a good day
If you're going to sleep to this, goodnight
If you're here to listen to because you want to fill the silence, hope you enjoy the sound and hope your day will get better.
Joe shed a tear at the end, you could tell. Clearly this songs means something to him on a much more deeper and personal level like it does to me.
I want this song to be played in my funeral
It elicits sentimental feelings but also shows some lights of hope. The movie is a hidden tragedy though that is why somehow the music sounds so sad...Such a great piano piece that contains enormous emotions. And how incredible 久石譲 is that he rarely uses complex chords in his compositions but he always expresses both his mind and music in the purest way.
01:54 Look at how emotionally it gets! Truly fascinating!
Thanks, Joe
I feel like I've lived and went to heaven! ❤
Childhood .. 2005 was when I watched this movie. I remember when I was happy not to know the world that was unknown to me. This feeling of a time that does not come back .. This song even back that for a few minutes, that feeling. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to experience those days..☺
i cri everytyme
same x''D
I know right? I do not know why but it makes me cry
Same
Goosebumps & cry
Now that I am 30 years old, when I hear this music again, it reminds me of my childhood memories. The music I heard for the first time moved me to tears (2023/10)
this is so good.
I told my mom if I ever died for any reason I wanted this song played at my funeral, she immediately wrote it down in her computer, love her so much
No piece of music has ever made me feel emotion such as this one, especially this recording. Joe Hisaishi is second to none.
