Johnny Cash died just a few months after recording this, and his wife shortly after. When his daughter heard the song, she told him that it sounded like he was saying goodbye through the song. He said, "I was."

One of the best things i personally loved about Johnny Cash was is honesty of who he was. a deeply Flawed man- who didnt try and hide it- from his time serving in Prison to his drug problems- he didnt run from it- he shared his struggles. he owned them. RIP Johnny- I love you!

I've watched some other reaction videos to this and you seem to be the only one that really really gets it. I reached that level of understanding of what really matters too, awhile ago. I'm surrounded by so many people that haven't reached that stage in their lives to see and feel and know what truly matters. A lot of the things people worry about and what they think they want, isn't truly what they need. It's much deeper than that. Anyways... good thoughts sent your way from Toronto, Canada. Keep doing what you are doing.

This song hits close to home..Lost 3 people, ( Including a woman I loved) to drug overdoses and had to watch them go from good people to hard-core junkies who wound up dying alone. Ironically thier passing gave me even more incentive to leave drugs and people that use 'em alone..Like Cash sang, You can't get close to them--They'll bring you down with them.

I inherited a few Cash albums from my blind Aunt in the early 70s. They had Braille stickers on so she knew what the record was. I grew up knowing all his songs, then he made a comeback in the 2000s with several amazing albums. I was absolutely overjoyed. Then, he was gone. I was drinking coffee in a café when the news came over the radio. What a genius we lost that day.

This song was originally written & performed by "Nine Inch Nails". It was written about drugs & depression. But Johnny Cash's version is considered the best. His version is more about regret for past mistakes in life & realizing material things & fame mean nothing in the end. When the video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old & had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12 & his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15 of the same year.

  • @rescuetweak

Ultimately his version of the song revolves around the ageless truth that “Only one life, it will soon be passed, only what’s done for Christ will last.“ Johnny Cash and his wife believed that entirely and saying about it often through their lives. The part of the song where he shows his greatest anguish is along with the images of Christ being nailed to the cross, salvaging the lives of all of those who would believe. Johnny Cash was one of those.
Thanks for the wonderful reaction. And remember that only Jesus, who existed long before the Universe that he created, along with the God the Father and the Holy Spirit hold the Keys to life and death and eternity. Even in his struggling with regrets and sin Cash knew this redemptive truth and his life has now been salvaged as anyone’s can be if they are willing to humble themselves in the sight of the Lord and call on His his name.

"He doesn't recognize himself". You hit on something I have not gotten from any of the other dozens of reactions I have watched to this performance. As we get older, and I am not all that many years younger than Johnny was when he recorded this, it does seem that we no longer know who we are. Looking back on our hopes from so many years ago, and looking at who and what we were in the past, it doesn't seem to match up anymore with who we are now. That old worn down guy I see in the mirror is not someone I ever imagined I would become. But here we are. And what have we really accomplished along the way. Building our empire of dirt? What a waste of the time we have been given. One of the saddest aspects of life is that, for too many of us, wisdom comes too late to put it to use.

Johnny Cash left us, the human race, a simple truth. You may gain and acquire great wealth, fame and fortune - but you must also realize it's not worth squat if you are not cognizant of your personal impact on the world. Not just your immediate surroundings but the WORLD AS A WHOLE! The natural flora and fauna.
The world as a whole depends on how we humans treat and utilize the natural resources of "Spaceship Earth!" And we humans depend on what our planet can provide.
As far as "WE" know the nearest planet that may sustain life, "as we know it," is approximately 125 million light years away. You think you can survive the trip eating your billions?
The TRUE question is: Are you brazen and willing enough to pass on a decrepted world/planet to those that shall inherit this "Empire of Dirt?"
