One little correction I would like to make if I may: The citadel core didnt blow up as a direct result of the dark fusion reactor blowing up; the combine soldiers deliberately set the core to meltdown as a last ditch attempt to call reinforcements, as their main transport portal at the top was gone.
The entire citadel is a huge thumper to keep antlions out of City 17, after the portal explosion the main automatic security systems fail and the thumper is disabled allowing hordes of antlions to emerge from the citys' grounds

If I may make a correction the core did not become unstable because the black fusion reactor shut down it became unstable because the combine had no other way to actually communicate with the combine homeworld so they detonated their fusion reactor to create pure portal energy that would create a infant super portal if it became unstable because of the reactor how was Gordon able to bring it back to stability clearly the stalkers and combine soldiers would know how to do that on their own so they did it on purpose
