  • Admiral Tennat visits Arromanches which the HAMPSHIRES managed to capture on D-Day against all the odds. The CO was wounded twice on the beach and the second in command killed by a sniper. Armour support only arrived very late and the regiment did not capture all its allocated titles so when the Commander in Chief arrived the acting CO thought he was due a rocket. But the officers in charge could see for themselves what the HAMPSHIRES had achieved and instead congratulated the regiment. They were only made the ROYAL HAMPSHIRES after the war. I have cobbled bits and pieces of film together to give a rough idea of how the Mulberry Harbour was constructed. The Admiral in the film meets British soldiers which I like to believe are probably from the Hampshire Regiment. The film is also interesting because it shows the hole made in the sea wall ready to take the first section of roadway (WHALE) of the Mulberry Harbour.

Priceless footage. Too bad we don't learn from history.
