According to Major-General Sir Nigel Holmes, speaking in April 1945, 'Without Southampton we could not have done D-Day'. The effective headquarters during D-Day and during Operation Overlord for the British and Commonwealth Armies was in South Western Hotel, code named HMS Shrapnel, and the US ARMY headquarters was in a wing of Southampton Civic Centre. None the less the idea that the port was the 'springboard' for D-Day is still treated by some with derision.

The Chief Reporter for the Guardian Newspaper went to Southampton to investigate the reason given the pivotal role it played during D-Day why the city did not make more fuss? He was told by the City Historian that people had 'moved on' but the real reason was the 'woke' approach adopted by Southampton City Council.

The enlisted men from the US Army 14 Major Port did the lifting and carrying for the troops during Operation Overlord. They were quartered in these barracks which are currently used as the headquarters for the Territorial Unit where there is also a plaque to celebrate their contribution.

Southampton was the principal port for all allied troops until the end of hostilities. This film shows LeClerc's Free French troops leaving from Southampton. These troops went on to liberate Paris.

This film of D-Day had over 10,000 views during the commemoration. The film starts in b&w with an LST leaving the Royal Pier on D 8 which then merges into colour film of two Canadian Landing Ships leaving the Town Quay to join the Armada on Southampton Water before heading to the Calshot light ship and then onto the Solent before travelling to Normandy on D-Day.

Until this film appeared the role of the Port of Southampton train ferries was unknown. It is estimated that 90% of the French rolling stock was transported through Southampton mainly from this berth. Without the benefit of the supplies provided by railway General Patton's Third Army could not make their rapid advance across France.
