Loving your videos! I looked through the other comments and didn't see this question, so I thought I would ask. How hard is it to line up the weave where it comes together in the middle? I was 100% sure I'd be able to see the seam, but at least in the video I couldn't even tell it wasn't one big sheet of carbon fiber. How do you do it?
Also, I saw the filter door mold video. Do you have a video showing how you made molds for the larger parts like your Mustang doors, etc.
Thanks for your time!!
Absolutely badass
What weight fabric was used? And given the low layer count, was orientation a major concern? Or does the Soric really add that much rigidity
Don’t confuse weight with layers. I use 12k on backing layers. And yes, soric is a great core for infusions and adding strength.
Oh dooooode, quality work, I have designs on messing up Carbon parts for my car but this is quite the setup!
Did you do anything special to get the resin to infuse to the end of the waterfall scoop?
No. I did start the second inlet a little soon and the scoop almost didn’t make it. But otherwise epoxy makes it there even if the second inlet “seals off” certain areas cause the folds in the banging film act as little Chanel’s for air to escape and draw in epoxy.
What core material are you using? Looks very easy to work with compared to foam core
it looks like a material we use called lantor soric
AJ how much do you charge for a hood. How much money would be a good starting price
Great video!!
it must be a very bad neighborhood to wear a vest at work xD watching you make this parts always help to learn different things, have you experience many problems while babysitting the infusion? what was the final weight of the part itself? hope you can post a picture installed in a future :P
I very rarely experience issues but I always babysit infusions cause you never know when the tiniest leak could ruin hours of work and hundreds of dollars of materials.
The vest is absurd
what tach spray are you using? It me that you sent the roller tool to :) I have been having issues with a lot of the 3m stuff over the years and wondering if it is worth moving over to the airtech products or a better suggestion.. I put patches and stickers infused in my stuff and sometimes trying to clean the residue screws them up a little. Mostly stickers.
3M super 77.
Do you ever get any voids or delamination between laters where the making tape is? I'd save a bunch of time if I added the tape inside my parts but I'm worried the tape with cause structural issues
This is awesome to see the process. Amazing you can make money with the amount of time spent doing these.
I did notice these aren't listed on the website and I've been so disappointed that you no longer offer the E46 carbon hoods. Is stuff like this done on request only since you already have the molds?
Sold the e46 hood mold. I’ll do these if they can be picked up at my shop or an event at VIR.
@@ajhartmanaero too bad it wasn't to Terry. Thanks for letting me know
Super nice! 👌
once again great video. what kind of resin did you use in the mold making? and for infusion? is the soric 2mm? also, will you make the both sides of the hood? regards from brasil!
Just fiberglass and polyester for the mold. Yes, soric core. And this is only a one sided part and needs to be pinned on
@@ajhartmanaero love your vids man where do you get that core at? Want to try to use it to make a Klingon bat’leth as stupid as that sounds but I’m a fan of the trek ha
hello a j , were is your shop located ? what is the cost of making carbon fibre doors for a nissan 300zx ?
I've been considering building a fiberglass hard top for my CJ5. Is it possible for me to use this infusion process for the top and the three sides all at once? I'm guessing I'd be drawing the resin down as the top would actually be upside down and the three sides upward. I haven't seen or heard of anyone trying this. Any input on where I can learn this would be greatly appreciated.
Great work👍

was that large orange mould made using a DIY method? 3d printed in parts then bolted? but the surface finish is smooth and doesn't seem as junky as those?
I made it from an oem hood I modified.
what tool are you using to trim up the hood? cordless dremel? what bit?
Yes. Cutting wheel.
Do you think 2.5cfm vacuum pump is enough for a hood sir?
Hello there can you make me carbon fiber hood for my GMC Syclone 700 hp? I’ve been looking around and nothing out there, but only VIS. I’ve heard bad stuffs about VIS.
Does lining the sheets in the same direction diminish strength? I've been seeing that you should cross weave the layers for stability
If the part has many compound curves and bends, the shapes will give strength. It depends on what part is being made of the carbon fiber. The hood is mostly an aerodynamic part and not much of a structural part so the hood could be made with the fiber weave traveling in the same direction. doing so would usually just make the hood flex more in one direction than the other. Noticeable when lifting the hood from either side of the car. Structural parts and areas that need to be strong would need cross layering of fiber direction. Different fiber weave pattern and thickness plus number of layers will create different strength. Making the hood too strong could pose a safety risk in a front-end collision. Your question is very good. ;-)
What kind of spray can r you using to hold the carbon down
How did you make the form you are working from
What materials, resins is the mold made of?
Всё налажено, красота!!!
Nice work, any chance of a gt350 hood with a gt500 vent?
Ehh maybe. I may look into more of a GT4 style hood if I do one. I have to look at parts I make from a business angle and see if I’d sell enough to make the molding process worth it or not.
what about the inside of the hood? where are all the hinges and stuff that connect to the car will go ?
It’s a pin on hood.
What is the core? Soric?
Hey can you do a video on how you make a mold
I just did recently. Check my videos.
Hey, that's a nice table! :)
Its hanging in there like a champ! I slightly modified it over the years but no reason to build a new one.
what process are you using for the molds?
Fiberglass layup
Man I want to get into making carbon parts
Get a starter kit on ebay. One must get used to using the materials and this takes lots of practice. I say go for it. Epoxy has no VOCs so doing it in my studio apartment hasn't been a problem. Do it. I dare you!!!
No one is stopping you. Plenty of videos out there on how to. Just be ready to fail a lot.
Don't get fooled doe. Sure making a carbon fiber part from a mould is ''hard''. Making a mould is way harder and you will spend 4x the time if not more on the mould then you will on laying up all the stuff in the mould and infusion.
Can you make theses without the headlight blanks? Just the hood
Yeah. Just cut the headlight blanks off when it’s done.
what the expend cost of that?
Does the intake need to be flipped to fit this? How much since I don't see it on your site.
Yes unless you trim the duct to clear any intake tubes. $2200
Looks like a ben grambau hood!
Funny enough, the hood on Bens car was the hood I used to make the mold in 2014 or 2015 to reproduce these. I originally made it as a one-off from an oem hood on Ben Lesnaks car.
please make movie how to make perfect mold ! :(
Check out the Easy Composites Ltd Tutorial. I suspect the process here is not terribly different if not the same as in that video. What's not covered would be what resins to use, where to place primary and secondary (if needed) infusion locations. Placement of vacuum. Monitoring the infusion process and when to cut off resin flow. The Throttle Stop Garage channel might fill in some of that.
Does something like that need inner ribbing like a normal hood to not flex everywhere?
If it did, would I make it like I did? The duct, natural curve of the hood and the core material make the hood strong enough.
@@ajhartmanaero Cool thanks for the info.
What is that grey tape you used along the center seam at 1:26?
Secret veil tape.
Great videos!! How much does this hood weigh?
12lbs
Are you wearing a plate carrier?
Yes. No plates.
You say backing layers are 12k, is that standard twill or biaxial?
