The box came open during shipment. FedEx is shitty and they don't attempt to repackage... Unlike UPS which actually will attempt to repackage and ensure contents. If UPS looses your package it either got lost in the miles of belts/conveyors/shutes, or is damaged beyond repackaging. Sometimes the sender doesn't even respond to UPS's request to reship a customer's order at the expense of UPS. YES... UPS attempts to pay for damages to contents that are damaged in shipment.

    I have a cute story.
Right now I'm watching this on a computer (duh) that has a "Gateway 2000" logo on it. It's not really a Gateway anymore. It's what was left over from a broken donated machine. Over the years I've swapped out, changed, upgraded, and replaced so many parts that it no longer has any Gateway guts inside, but the case is still here. There are so many "auxiliary" random holes drilled in it (lost the cover many years ago) for accommodating so many different parts that "just didn't fit right" as I modified it over the years. I think this was supposed to be a server tower at some point. It has room for two power supplies, four 5.25" cdroms, a 1.44M floppy (oddly enough I have still have one installed and actually working), and four internal 3.5" hard drive bays. It's gone all the way from a 486DX to a present day AMD FX-8302E eight core.

It's very handy for typical functions, looking up things, watching video, or anything where you might need a PC rather than an Android tablet. If this Gateway's build quality is as good as it seems it would definitely be useful, especially after slapping a less resource intensive Linux distro on it. Doubly so if you can upgrade the memory.

As a former walmart associate, that's definitely unlike what we usually receive. Especially if it's a walmart brand (I would group this in since it's a walmart exclusive laptop) we often deal with a ton of products within boxes within boxes. If anything, that's a lot better packaging than what we receive, since we receive laptops just in the laptop box, not in a standard brown box. If I had to hazard a guess, someone tried to steal it but may have been caught red-handed by FedEx.

When I restarted it though, it was working fine once again.

Ive bought some Philco rebrands that are quite good, they have more and better features and overall look way better quality than the generic version. (battery powered screw driver and drill). The generic ones sometimes cheap out too much, so the rebrand usually also adds some quality control and common sense features missing.

My very first computer was a Gateway in 1999. It had a Pentium 3 processor. I'm pretty sure all the ram and storage numbers were measured in MB... This beast ran on dial up. We had AOL and the whole 9 yards. I remember we ended up putting in a 2nd phone line for it because my mother didn't like not being able to talk on the phone while we were using the internet.
I also remember before we got the 2nd landline, we had some type of program on the computer that was basically Caller ID and it would tell you when and who was trying to call you. And you could click a button and choose to end the internet connection and allow the call to ring the house. Or you could ignore the notice and stay connected online.

But when I popped the game into my 3DS, there was some save data on it. And when I looked through the instruction manual, I noticed that some kid had scribbled in the "additional notes" segment in it, saying it was like Smash Bros and stuff like that. I can probably explain why that box was a bit ripped up (5:11) so, if I had to guess, FedEx's sorting system is similar to that of UPS's (because I have a friend who's a UPSer explain to me in detail just the basics of how it all works in the facility they work in. Granted, I'm being vague here because it's just common courtesy and at the request of my friend who shall remain nameless. Privacy reasons you see.) sorting system. Most likely it might've gotten ripped up a bit because it could've got caught on the nylon strip that's used to (generally speaking) reduce the friction from packages transitioning from the belt to another belt or otherwise. As for the lack of packaging material... I will say for certain that it's either negligence or under the assumption that the actual product's box itself will have the packaging material inside. While that is a fair assumption, you can never be too careful so from my friend's professional opinion, it's better to be safe than sorry.
When I asked my friend what he thinks of this sight of a box being inside another box like this, they said, and I am paraphrasing here, "Judging by this, I can probably guess that they may have put a label on the box and then when it went through their own sorting system, it may have been damaged in the process so they may have opted to put it in their own box to prevent anymore hiccups. Either that or they don't want the box to lose it's contents during the sorting process and/or shipment so they decided that by using their own box may have been an option that was considered. There are so many reasons I can think of why they went this route."
