    It seems to be a continuation of the Freestyle chess drama. Magnus is willing to fight FIDE on behalf of all the other players because unlike almost all other players, Magnus is no longer dependent on FIDE for his livelihood and career aspirations.

    The dress code is a good example of why FIDE is terrible. They are more concerned about showing their power by pushing an outdated dress code than broadening the reach of chess. They have been antagonistic with more champions than not. Players should ban FIDE and push for the creation of a governing body that one supports the players and two grows the popularity and reach of the game. FIDE has consistently been a minimum of a decade behind the times since the 80's, maybe earlier but that is before my time. If they would have had their way chess wouldn't be played online at all. FIDE hasn't been worth the trouble for more than half a century.

    • @daedalron
      @daedalron 18 днів тому

      A fine for breaking the dress code was fine. Banning him from playing was not.
      NBA had the same issue in the 80s. Jordan was fined every game for wearing his shoes, since they broke the dress code rules (due to colors iirc). But they never banned him from playing...

Carlsen looked clean and well dressed and his jeans looked the better variety of jeans 2.Discomfort can be a distraction and jeans (or sneakers) could be more comfortable to some players. My take (even if nobody requested for it 🤣)
    Yes , rule is rule for everybody even if you are the best. But the regulation of the rule should be in accordance with the seriousness of the rule. If the rule is something related to lighter topics, like dressing code, the regulation must NOT be strict. If the rule is on cheating, the regulations can be strict. So I am with Magnus on this one.

    • @mrjoe5292
      @mrjoe5292 18 днів тому

      I agree in principle. I would worry that this would mean stronger/more famous players have more freedom to break the less serious rules with more impunity.
      I don't have a huge issue with a dress code, though I think players should have some say in it. But I can also understand the desire to enforce rules strongly when people with a lot of influence and power try to break them. We see so often how rules don't apply to people if they have the means to avoid punishment.

      I personally did not understand the desire to enforce rules when someone with power is breaking it. This is generally not how the world is working. It could have been appreciable if the rule had not been a pity one like this but something rather meaningful.
      But it has been rather childish like to not pair someone just because he was wearing a jeans which is still looking decent. Could have warned for the next day. Could have applied more fine if this rule really makes more sense to them.

    @trinidadtobagogs 18 днів тому +4

    He is a sore loser. After certain age or after certain years playing the classical chess at top level, it is very difficult to keep up with it anymore. With the computers, this age is coming down and down. He knew that so before loosing the title to a kid from the new generation, he quit playing it and asked FIDE to change the rules for the world championship. They said well we already have a world championship for rapid and blitz you don’t have to play the classical chess if you don’t want to. Now he knows he can’t be at top for that as well, so he wanted to make freestyle tournaments with his billionaire friends. FIDE thought it is a threat to the game - which I believe it is not, anybody should be able to organise tournaments although FIDE does not recognise those. So although FIDE is wrong there, Magnus and other top players accepted FIDE’s terms and agreed on things before this tournament. But after not a very good tournament- at least not his standards- Magnus and his PR team I think deliberately chose this combination- looking reasonable to common people but violating the FIDE rules - which they accepted before coming to the tournament. And now FIDE started it all not Magnus (!). He knows his time is over and coming to an end - I mean as the best player in the world - he doesn’t want to loose it by playing the game, he wants to stage it so it looks like he quit at top because he got bored of winning.

    If Carlsen dissociates himself from FIDE, it opens a room of opportunity for others (especially Hikaru, Alireza, Caruana and others)

    With all due respect this guy could have been one of the best ambassadors of the game but he chooses to do this. First he does not accept the fact that he does not have it in him anymore to go through the classical championship grind and ran away from his responsibility to pass on the baton. He aslo chose to criticize the format. Ding had so many reasons to quit but he was way more courageous. Now magnus does this. First fischer then kasparov and now magnus running away from their responsibility. Instead of making the game bigger he chooses to demean it at the biggest stage. Sad. Game is bigger than any player.

    I like Magnus a lot in general, but this is the second time he let himself and the chess world down. The first time was when he made allegations against Niemann without having any proof. The second time was when he agreed to tournament rules and then, after having performed poorly for his standards, decided to not comply to the rules. Very unprofessional of him to make this a "matter of principle" (what "principle", BTW?), instead of complying like everyone else. This has a bitter taste, because of Magnus' financial interest in a non-FIDE event. Too much power play, too little sportsmanship.

    Where is the PCA now? It was created to cater to Kasparov ‘s interests. That’s why it disappeared quickly. Carlsen just used the dress code as an excuse to leave the tournament as he is a bad loser. Now he wants to follow in his former mentor’s (Kasparov’s) footsteps for the same reasons. Both hurt the world of chess badly.
