My uncle was with the VanDoos in the Korean war. While on guard duty in a foxhole on the front lines he and his platoon were instructed to tie their boot laces in a certain way, and to keep them that way. Without explanation. It turns out that a platoon of Gurkhas was going on an exploritory mission and would be crawling into foxhole holes looking for the enemy by feeling how their laces were tied. If your boot laces were not tied as instructed you were deemed to be the enemy and subject to being beheaded. My uncle told us that captured enemy soldiers were absolutely terrified of having to face Gurkhas. He also told us that these soldiers were fearless, respectful, humble and did everything at double time. In all my uncle's career he stated that their best allies ever were the Gurkhas. God bless them for being on our side.

Just saw this .. I agree 110% Why ! the f*ck this guy did not receive the VC I can only think that these guy's are still being treated as 2nd class citizens by the British Government. ( and before anyone starts I'm UK born and breed 50yrs ) It's a shame "Joanna Lumly " has not been aware and SHAMED the British Forces / Government into awarding this guy the VC .. Wouldn't have been surprised if "They didn't Fine / Punish him for misuse of Military Property; ie. throwing machine gun tripod at the enemy". Yet.. we allow illegal imigrants into this country day after day .. feed / cloth and house them ... then shit on the "Gurkha's" Makes me angry, I was going to be ashamed to be British .. But I'm proud of our "Forces" and I respect Any guy that serves his country ; British or not. "Per Mare, Per Terram"
In all fairness, the VC is awarded only very rarely, and often enough posthumously -- of the fourteen since WW II, 8 were posthumous. The last non-posthumous award was in 2005 to a Grenadian private, Johnson Beharry -- if you're keeping track of race, Beharry is not white. The last non-posthumous award in the British Army before that was in 1965, forty years earlier: it was awarded to (then) Lance Corporal Rambahadur Limbu of the 10th Gurkha Rifles. (Two soldiers in the Australian army also received non-posthumous VCs in the late 60s.) Brave and valorous as L.Cpl. Pun's actions were, they're weren't quite up to the standard required for a VC. Take Rambahadur Limbu's actions on Borneo: Two soldiers from his detachment had been wounded and were lying where Indonesian soldiers could fire directly on them. One of them had been carrying the group's Bren gun as well. Limbu, whom other Gurkhas were trying to cover, attempted to get close enough to rescue his two wounded comrades. However, he soon decided that he would just have to make a run for it. To the utter amazement of those covering him, he simply sprang up, ran straight into the line of Indonesian fire and, with bullets flying all round him, picked one man up and carried him to safety. He had cheated death once, but that still left one wounded comrade to rescue, and to the shock of the others Limbu, having set down the first wounded man, turned round and ran right back into a hail of bullets. He picked up the second man and brought him back too. Death cheated twice. Yet the unit's Bren gun was still out there. One guess as to L.Cpl. Limbu's next action. Having secured the Bren gun, he then led his unit against the Indonesians' position; in the ensuing action he killed four Indonesians. This is the sort of thing for which the VC is awarded. N.b., by the way, the sequence of L.Cpl. Limbu's actions: first, rescue comrades; second, secure gun; third, lead attack. Incidentally, it was only when the Indonesians were in full retreat that Limbu noticed on his uniform the bits of brain from one of the two men whom he had rescued. Sadly, both later succumbed to their injuries.
@Will Scathlocke I think you'll find that a VC was also awarded to Captain Harry H Jones of the Parachute Regiment in 1983? after The Falklands campaign?
"Give me a Gurkha battalion and I will conquer the world" - An Army General Amazing warriors. One of my relative is an officer in the Gurkha Rifles (Indian Army), I have met these amazing soldiers personally, some of the most down to earth, friendly and happy go lucky people I have ever met. Respect.
we're Nepalese we may fight for your regiment but you can never change our identity. The battalion might be named Gurkha but we Nepalese are the real Gurkhas.

A true hero. The Gurkha are amazing warriors. Much respect to the Gurkha soldiers. Every time I hold a Kukri I will think of the men that make them a part of themselves and use them to save lives.
Fifty minutes of fighting, fighting 12 insurgents, singlehandedly? That would have teen the highest military honor in the United States...the Medal of Honor. Why not the VC for this hero?
Semper Fi the Victorian Cross is a British award, not an American one. For somebody named after the Marines slogan you should’ve known that. Next statement.
@Aaryan Bhandari we appreciate every nepalese person. All absolute legends who dont give up. It's rare to have such a nation gifted with traits deemed rare in other place so common in yours
I've met a few Gurkhas who where actively serving when they came to Wales for a Visit. They are lovely people and are best Soldiers ever. We was doing a Project together which was remembering those who died in WW1. It was a Project which was done by people all over the U.K and we dressed up in replica WW1 uniforms and Marched for miles. It was a theater project and we was all over the News and Social Media. So proud to be apart of it.
Wow!!! I have heard alot about these great warriors but wow It brings a tear to my eyes and I dont think I can adequately say how much they should be admired and respected God bless the Gurkhas and thanks!!!
If a person says he's not afraid of dying then either he's lying or he's a Gurkha. A Gurkha is trained to Get the work done, No matter what, if he dies his ghost continues to fight. That's how a Gurkha is trained.

Gurkha were also in galepoli in Anzac war. As Australian from nepali decendent I am very proud of my ansestors. British officer said Gurkha were worth every gold that they cost. And also said if they had more Gurkha galepoli would never have cost as much as it did. Even a beach in Turkey was named as Gurkha beach. They achieved something many didn't think it was achievable. Gurkha were in British side of the campaign and were one of the first to enter and last to leave. 200000 of them served in WW1 and I believe all Nepali decendent are proud of New Zealand especially the man that climbed Everest and is also in today newzeland money. 😀 I hope you know who I mean. I know all newzeland know of him but just giving some friendly riddle. Something else to be proud of. Newzeland a country with the clearest water and the inventor of Bungy jump. I have visited both island of newzeland. And did not knew it was once part of nsw. A state in Australia. Either way I think newzeland is one of the greatest and chill nation in world. I mean who abolished there job for better future I mean no upper class for law to be made. 🙏 I just love nz
The majority of British are incredibly proud and nationalistic when it comes to the British Armed Forces, yet somehow they (we) seem to reserve a very special kind of admiration for the Gurkhas that other British branches, battalions, regiments etc. would love to receive. They really are something quite special, its difficult to say what exactly. Incredible soldiers and personalities.
I have so much, SO MUCH respect for the Gurkhas! They are extremely honorable men who are incredibly brave, loyal and courageous! I remember the first time I had the honor to meet one, that handshake I got was memorable! There was a saying: “If a man says he is not afraid to die, he is either lying or he is a Gurkha”
I remember reading a news report of the Gurkha Rifles fighting in Afghanistan early on, they were ordered to attack a Taleban position and got into trouble with the British media when they brought their CO the severed Heads of the Taleban leaders, fucking awesome :P
+Pablo Jay I believe they were told to photograph the retinas of the taliban either killed or captured on an operation but because of a firefight they had to get out of there. So his only options were to leave without proof or chop his head off and scan his retinas back at the PB. He chose the latter.
Hooray for the British people and their allies. The Gurkhas have a long and honorable tradition with the British. I'm a 20 year retiree from the U S Marine Corps myself. God bless the British people. God bless the USA. In case you need to know, I'm of Norwegian and Apache ancestery. . Have a happy!
Hero’s all, But never mess with a Gurkha who is not afraid to die and is determined to take as many of the enemy with him and if he draws his Kukri he’s going to take a lot with him, The Gurkhas deserve nothing but the utmost respect for their Bravery, Loyalty and Tenacity, This Gurkha deserved the Victoria Cross in my opinion.
My Grandfather was a British Soldier in WWII, serving in India when war broke out, he ended up serving with Indian and Nepalese Ghurkhas fighting against the Japanese in South East Asia. Had a lot to say about the Bravery of both. But the Gurkhas in particular. He Said of the Gurkhas that the Japanese forces were terrified of them and would often flee when they realized who they were fighting.
My both father and Uncle also served in the British Army. He is now 80 years old. My whole family came to UK back in May 2016. I even went to school and made so many friends , they all were so friendly. My English wasn't that good back then but despite that I used to play with them all time. I can never forget that school, friends and those amazing teachers. Very good memory of mine.
30 years ago a friend was in the British Army. Just before he went out for sentry duty one night the sergeant called the sentries together to tell them that Gurkhas would be coming through the lines that night but they wouldn't see them or hear them. My friend thought 'I'm an experienced professional soldier, I'll be able to spot them'. He concentrated on spotting the Gurkhas and only realised they had gone through the lines when he found his shoelaces had been tied together.

When you fight with or against a Gurkha you know you faught against the greater warrior earth have ever seen. How rare is it.when the enemy that you fight against praise you for bravery. Respected worldwide for there courage. Gurkha are protector first and to protect there cause they will kill to live. Rather than surender which break troop moral. Atleast you know with Gurkha there is never derseters. A unit that will never fail you in battle unless death overtakes. Even after death they will remembered by both side of conflicted parties for there action in battle.
Sam manikshya x field marshal of indian army once told if a man tells he is not scared of death then either he is lying or he is a Gurkha we r proud to have a huge number of Gurkhas in our army ❤🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
Totally agree! That's the first thing I thought after the short citation, which really couldn't describe his 15 minutes of pure and continuous fighting.
It sucks that the British army chooses to make the Gurkha infantryman salary so low in comparison. They should have the same salary as every other British soldier of the same job. The salary gap is huge!
Beating one's enemies to death with a machinegun tripod may not be quite as traditional for a Gurkha as using the Khukuri, but it's certainly deserving stuff of legend, and does indicate a certain style. And it's quite reminiscent of U.S. Medal of Honor recipient and tank crewman Dwight "Skip" Johnson, who when he ran out of submachinegun and pistol ammunition during a nighttime attack on his unit's tanks in Vietnam, beat one enemy to death with his empty SMG, then, after it broke into pieces, stabbed another to death with the remains of its wire stock. Goddess Kali did not call Skip Johnson to her that day, but he is gone now. And so too She did not call Corporal Dipprasad Pun on his day of battle, though someday he too will go to Her. I hope he marries and gives the world some more strong Gurkha sons before that; we need them and I admire them, and he has set the example for his brother Gurkhas.

natho dynommiter - If he’s in the Gurkha regiment then there’s nothing preventing him from getting a Victoria Cross. While they can be described as mercenaries they are an official part of the British military. Gurkha soldiers in the past have received the Victoria Cross.
he said "i had no fear of losing my life." "all i thought was before they kill me i would have to kill some of them." and the look in the man's eyes when he says that, straight up eye of the tiger.
I am very proud of those peoples who can easily give up their life to achieve some goals..or serve their master..but, sometimes i feel their minds are hacked and they are brainwashed to give up life on demand of their master
when it comes to honesty and patriotism then I dont think it should be regarded as brainwashed.
Alex Skywalker yes indeed... proud to be nepali... Proud to be gorkha

This retired US NCO salutes the Gurkha loyalty and mindset as military members.
God bless them for being on our side.
thanks for sharing. really amazing story

And they won even after emptying their bullets and killing enemies with their kukaris.

Huge respect for your father..no doubt he was a brave soldier

Why the *hell* was he not awarded the VC?? Outstanding work, Sergeant Pun!
Just saw this .. I agree 110% Why ! the f*ck this guy did not receive the VC
I can only think that these guy's are still being treated as 2nd class citizens by the British Government.
Sadly, both later succumbed to their injuries.
because for a Ghurka 12 Taliban is a warm up.
WildMan So true
@Will Scathlocke I think you'll find that a VC was also awarded to Captain Harry H Jones of the Parachute Regiment in 1983? after The Falklands campaign?

I've met a few Gurkhas who where actively serving when they came to Wales for a Visit. They are lovely people and are best Soldiers ever. We was doing a Project together which was remembering those who died in WW1. It was a Project which was done by people all over the U.K and we dressed up in replica WW1 uniforms and Marched for miles. It was a theater project and we was all over the News and Social Media.

Dad was a para and always said the best words in the English language are "lads we have a Gurkha regiment backing us up on this one".
I am watching in 2019 , More respect than before.
