My Westie Rhue was the best dog we ever had and never needed to be on leash. He would stop at the curb before crossing, always the gentleman he would wait for me. He faced the fiercest dogs with a lick on the nose leaving them totally bewildered and was loved by every child in the neighborhood. We finally had to put him down in old age. My heart still aches for him.
I’m so sorry you lost your baby. We also have a Westie…can’t imagine owning any other breed. They are definitely smart, spunky and lovable. Since my husband and I are disabled and basically home bound, Sophie is our ‘comic relief’ and it’s impossible to be in a bad mood or depressed around her. Your baby sounds like he was an amazing friend! God Bless You.
I have owned westies and they are very very smart. They learn how to open doors and I even had one learn how to get into the duct work of the basement. They can and may figure out when that collars on and they have to behave , but when the collar is off I don't have to listen. Never under estimate a westie. They are also not lap dogs but people always try treating them that way.
I’ve owned three Westies. I find this video incredulous! Hahahahaha! There’s no way! The only time I’ve ever seen a Westie that obedient was when he was 15! Fifteen years to mellow the terrier out of him! 🤣
This is a before/after video from our 14-day Board & Train Program! We get these amazing results in a short period of time! Call us for more info 888-909-6026
Haha, yeah. My westie is 12 yo and is more "obedient" only b/c his age prevents him moving as fast as he wants to. Without external stimuli, he is "calm" but if another dog or deer wanders into our yard, the terrier in him comes out immediately.
Aww he reminds me of my next neighbor’s Westie called Monty. He was pretty cheeky, used to come around and snatched things like rubber ducky from bathroom. But he was also really clever and I used to take him for walks by me cycling and he followed close to me. He never has gone off even in a park where others dogs and birds were around
I thought I had my Westie trained to sit and a couple of other things, but he would only do it when he wanted to. I have not gotten him to "stay" and he loves to pull when I walk him on leash. He is very stubborn. I would love for him to be like the one in the video. I guess I don't spend enough time with him.
most westies love people and get bored rigid if deprived of human or animal company/stimulation. this may well be part of the problem. good luck with this as for their very well-documented stubbornness, i find that a huge part of their charm. if i wanted a dog that always rolled over, fetched and played dead, i could just as easily buy a furry electronic toy. as long as mine obey the basics i'm quite happy. the one and only command i have always enforced absolutely rigidly is the command "wait", since this could save their lives. even my first westie, a legend for unruliness, would freeze in mid-air if given this command. ;o)
@@davidparsons9362 this dude is cheating by using a shock collar. Such a shame. Westies do what they want. I find this video pathetic. Some fake dog whisperer showing us nothing really.
not a clever video at all, i'm afraid. a westie's (or most dog's) prey drive will usually override any training you can give. i thought my first one was well-trained for the street until he took off under a van and was very, very lucky to survive. after that he was always on the lead near roads. never, ever take any chances as seen in this video. it only takes a split-second and they're gone......
I agree and I have two energetic Westies. The are little hunters who were bred follow the big dogs in a fox hjnt and will go to ground if a fox goes down a hole. They also were used to kill rabbits, weasels, rodents, any farm pests, and will go after anything their size or smaller that they are not raised around. Period.
Can you show us how to keep him from chasing a squirrel or rabbit while walking down a busy street like this. I have two Westies. I trained them very well but if they see a squirrel or rabbit all of that training is out of the window.
My 6 month old westie goes crazy when she sees another dog on the tv, or if she hears the postman, its like she declares war. Her sister doesnt have a care in the world and just watches her looking bemused. Any ideas of what to do?? I have tried the buzzer collar, not the shocker, and I have tried other stuff, but as yet apart from me purchasing permanent headphones, I dont know what to do, as she's driving me nuts.
don't know if there's anything you can do, to be honest. my first used to treat any dog on tv as a personal affront, with ensuing woofs, growls and hunting behind the box. he even spotted a shadow of a dog sticking out from behind a bush ca. 15 yards away IN A STILL PHOTO fer gawd's sake. of the 3 others we've had, 2 sometimes watch tv and don't give a stuff about dogs in programs and 1 barely watches it, if at all naturally this made watching tv with him a bit of an unpredictable experience lol
I had a Westie that had a will of her own. Could shout on her. She knew she had to come back, she knew that there was a punishment waiting for her for running away like that. Total willfulness. It is difficult to describe what I mean exactly. But basically she was gonna do what she wanted no matter what we wanted or said and was happy to tank any punishment, she was gonna do things her way only. And no amount of training can change that, she could do everything, was very smart, could do all the training commands. When SHE wanted. Some Westies have a will of iron that no training or punishments can break. And it can be incredibly infuriating. It breaks the man-dog contract. I totally see why someone would want a shock collar with a Westie. If I could have got one back then, I definitely would have used it(before the days of Amazon LOL).
Yeah not a smart video at all, any experienced Westie owner knows that prey drive is an accident waiting to happen. If you love actually love your Westie, use a damn lead for gods sake.
I have a Westie Jack. She's incredibly intelligent, incredibly wanting to please...and incredibly stubborn to what is innate to her inborn drives. This is THE MOST IRRESPONSIBLE, DANGEROUS, and I'm sorry to have to point out, IDIOTIC video EVER PERIOD! Im shocked that ANY truly loving, responsible owner would want their furrbaby of ANY BREED off-leash anywhere at any time. You don't know what circumstance can arise, and nature is nature, even to chase a squirrel, or to hide in fear, or to feel that their parents are threatened by people they feel are not good people. You are setting them up for danger!! And almost EVERY city, town, village or state I've heard of has Leash Laws. So I'm baffled by this intense need to have them off-leash. Is it REALLY that difficult to hold, or clip one to your belt loop, or anything? There's ALWAYS a way to make a leash work for your furrbaby's safety. This video just makes me angry, sad and nauseated all in one!!!!!
Any ideas on how to get a Westie to stop panting and slobbering when I take him for a car ride. As soon as he gets in it starts. I've tried to calm him down before we go but that's out the window as soon as he gets in.
Great didn’t learn anything from this video .... now can you teach me how to do this with my rambunctious Westie..... edit : WITH NO COLLAR EITHER cheaters ... my dog is to kind to shock him :(
In the video it looks like he has on a shock collar to make him behave. I have two Westies, and don't want anyother kind now. But they are unpredictable as another writer found out.
Savannah2751 my westie is predictable he just chooses not to listen when there’s a lot going on , if it’s just me and him , he is golden and behaves but add some chaos to the mix and he throws any lessons out the door lol but I would still get more if I could afford it because the love they give is more than any other breed out there
@@neversurrender2909 spot on sister. My Westie Rocco is a great dog and knows his commands, but I would never break his spirit by shocking him with a neck device. Cheating. The only thing I learned from this video is, never use a shock collar. Stay safe people 🙏
So do I - would rather not have a dog than use a shock collar. I have been with my Westie for 6 years now and I agree with all the above all good off lead until- Cat, rat , rabbit then all bets are off until prey is lost or caught.
They don’t hurt them. It’s not like they are getting electrocuted. And you don’t use them to punish the dog. They are used to get and keep their attention. Just like it says on the Off Lease K9 website.... “ There is a reason that the top law enforcement agencies, military, and top federal agencies: patrol, detection, and search and rescue dogs are trained using e-collars!”

quite agree with all of this. but i question whether you have in fact ever owned a westie........
it's much more likely to be the other way round ;o)

westies are little hunters.. i dont think they can unlearn this..
Westies were bred to be hunters of small pests. If they were not trained to be around something like a cat, they will go after it.
My Westies are the same. Perfect until they see a rabbit or bird. Then it’s all over.
I agree completely. Westies are like children with ADHD…they see squirrels, mice or rabbits, and they are unable to focus on anything else!
He's a trained killer, I'm not fooled for a moment.
Dumb me for thinking I'd learn something watching this.
Is the device around his neck controlling the dog? Is this a sales ad?

Westies have an extremely high prey drive. There is not alot you can do about it. The Joy's of having a natural hunter for a dog. 🤷♂️

Poor dog. Westies hate doing what they are told. You will break that dogs spirit with that Tyrant behaviour.
It’s not a “shock” collar. They aren’t getting electrocuted. It doesn’t hurt them.
Westies very smart dogs
Oh yah. Agreed. My little princess is hundreds of words strong, but if I accidentally drop that leash and her eyes catch prey...all bets are off.
