    Thanks for the help! I cleaned some of my local clay (Indiana), made it into a pot, and...it cracked. After a little research, I found out I needed some temper. How much? That's where you came in. Thanks again.

      +Maw Greenjeenz awesome!! have you tried firing it yet? if so, how did it go? theres so many different reasons a pot can crack during firing, temper is only one of them. but its a fun process perfecting it anyway

      No, I haven't finished my kiln yet, which I figure is fine, since I still have to learn how to make pots.

    Thanks I got mondo depression and have been going out to collect minerals, just started collecting clay and separating minerals from it.

    Is that 20% temper by weight or volume?

    I lost my temper with my temper. Heat treated sandstone to crumble. It was too round and I added too much and then too little. I filled the cracks with birch tar. Lol...... the pot then became a none returning boomerang.

    Not organic, but Inorganic. Grasses are organic, since they have a carbon-hydrogen bond. However seashells and sand are silica dioxide, not containing that compound structure.
