  • Here is a followup to "Sweet Cherry Wine" hope you like it! Some of these songs had christian meaning behind them as I exlpained about
He says “Crystal Blue Persuasion” is about becoming a Christian, about Jesus. His reading in the book of Revelation inspired it. Though the words themselves aren't strung together in scripture, it's how his heart strung them together. "Crystal Blue" is probable a reference to the 2 places in the Book O Revelation that use the word:
"a sea of glass like crystal" -4:6
"and he showed me a river of living water,, sparkling like crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the lamb, down the middle of the broad street of the city" --22:2

Staring up at the sky in the blue hour before sunrise, while listening to this is truly surreal.

I inherited a Quadraphonic stereo when I was a boy. Had all 4 speakers on my walls. It was so-so because all I had were stereo records. It came with one actual Quadraphonic 8-Track tape of "The Best of Tommy James and the Shondells." I'd put that one in and the system would come to life and all the bells and whistles on the front of the stereo would fire up and my room would be filled up with Tommy James. This song was my favorite on the entire tape. (Crimson & Clover came in close second because it had extra psychedelic music added.) Thanks for the memories.

Although Tommy James writes from a specifically Christian perspective, this song's lyrics are valid for any sort of spirituality.

There was nothing like this and what made it different was the execution. There were some like this in general sound but TJ&S made it work as they slipped into old shool - then some really old school with the short subtle Accapella and works into this song so well. A great song always loved it.

    Lyrics:
    Look over yonder
    What do you see?
    The sun is a-rising
    Most definitely
A new day is coming (ooh, ooh)
    People are changing
    Ain’t it beautiful? (ooh, ooh)
    Crystal blue persuasion
Better get ready to see the light
Love, love is the answer (ooh, ooh)
    And that’s all right
So don’t you give up now (ooh, ooh)
    So easy to find
Just look to your soul (your soul)
    And open your mind
    Crystal blue persuasion, hmm, hmm
    It’s a new vibration
    Crystal blue persuasion
    Crystal
    Blue persuasion
    Maybe tomorrow
    When he looks down
On every green field (ooh, ooh)
    And every town
    All of his children
    And every nation
There’ll be peace and good brotherhood
    Crystal blue persuasion, yeah
    Crystal blue persuasion, aah-aah
    Crystal blue persuasion, aah-aah
    (Crystal blue persuasion, aah-aah)

Could you, on just one cut, indicate more specifically where and how you add instruments to the enhancement? Just to give us po' folk some info?
You're brilliant. I am a huge fan of your work.

Hi Gerry. I have explained on a lot of my enhanced version in the description box just below the video on how I did many of these songs.I use a Yamaha 1602 (16) track mixing console given to me by a friend. I bought a Sterling Pro Studio Microphone. The process goes something like this.(1)I start out with a clean digital audio file from a CD and do a RESTORATION from that MAGIX AUDIO CLEANING LAB (adjusting the 3 band compression/dynamics, EQ & brightness settings).
(2). Then I move that file over the MAGIX AUDIO STUDIO 7 (multitrack program) on my HP computer and place it as track 1 or the MAINFRAME TRACK. The microphone is plugged into the sound mixer and fed into the back of the computer by aux in audio channel so it can be picked up by the multitrack program.
      (3) Then comes the critical task of deciding what instruments, percussion, vocals and keyboard might be needed to enhance the original. This is most critical job of all. There is no manual on doing this. You either know what you are doing or you do not. The TECHNIQUES change from song to song/artist to artist which is a real challenge. It helps first if you are a musician of some sort
and have practical knowledge and experience of the genre of music you are working on I do best with the songs of the era I grew up with 60's 70's era but any artists from any era can be done.
So to answer your question directly--the addition of any instrument, percussion or vocals you hear that were not in the original were added by me by strategically placing audio tracks on top of the original on both channels and mixing them down to make a better stereo version. Every song must be approached differently with a different set of rules. Enhancements are best
recognized and appreciated on songs that were only recorded in mono or poorly recorded in stereo.
It is paramount that I understand the MINDSET of the artist so as not to destroy the original. Not everyone agrees on this. Some people don't want anyone messing with the originals and others love it when I do it .More like it than don't.
The new things you hear in the songs are new instruments and vocals added on top of the original to give it better stereo imaging. It requires strategic placement of added audio tracks based on how it affects the left and right channel. Sometimes the songs needs just one acoustic guitar added on one channel and at other times 2 acoustic guitars (1 on each channel).
It could be a 12 string on the left and 6 string on the right or two 6 strings
on different positions (one with a capo) and the other without.
Or an acoustic on one channel and electric on the other etc. Percussion
can be on one channel or both with different drums (snare on left and tom tom on right). Same with keyboards but that is a whole other story I won't go into because when adding strings gets very complicated. Lastly added vocals
I prefer to always be in stereo by dividing some on left and right channel.
There are technical issues with sound tapering/ tweaking EQ, compression, brightness, dynamics, brilliance, tape simulation etc. in the mixing stage at the end of the process. That requires a good set of headphones or studio monitors for proper adjustment. I've made plenty of mistakes and no song 'I've done is perfect so it's a learning process that gets t better with each song I do. That's is basically it so I hope this answers you question. Kenn

Could you do an enhancement of Uptight by Stevie Wonder? One of my favorite late 60s Motown song, but it never sounds the way it should. What about Nowhere to Run by Martha Reeves & The Vandellas? Awesome channel!
