    Can't believe your facility actually exists! Who would want to take on all the responsibility that you have to do. So many hats you wear, the criticism you endure, the tiring auctions you attend, the building improvements you undertake, the staffing issues, the loyalty and trust to coworkers that disappoint. It certainly is not easy, but for the 💕 of horses 🐎+. Who's there to stand in the gap plus bring other organizations on board to continue on. There really isn't anyone like you. You inspire me!

    Amazing episode! Loved all the adoptions! Hope they all have great forever homes! Too bad about Yeti but what a lovely time she has had with you.
    How wonderful to mentor 25 new rescues! Seems like a BIG jump from last season though. I have enjoyed getting to know the last 4 groups and watching them grow and learn and even subscribing. It has made a difference in support and awareness for sure. Also, love watching your first mentors and seeing how they are paying it forward from their experience. It would be nice to have updates on all of them annually to hear about their growth, success numbers, favorite event or adoption, stories, and learn of new goals.
    Interns--amazing! Hope this will be an international, inclusive program. Maybe even setting up a scholarship fund to help with their travel expense and board. Or put it out there for someone to donate 'miles' for flights. I'm sure that will be life changing!

  • @HughLlewellyn
    @HughLlewellyn Рік тому +4

    I'm always so happy to see bonded pairs get adopted together. Loved the donkey adopters. I'm so sad about Yeti. If it weren't for the cancer, she could have had many happy, healthy years still, despite her age. It's heartbreaking. I've dealt with squamous cell carcinoma and defeated it, but I know how insidious it is. Maybe if her owners had taken her to the vet... but yeah. They didn't. So HPHS had to step in and do the heartbreaking thing.
    I can't wait to see which applicants are chosen for the next series. I'm REALLY pulling for Horses of Gili. What an AWESOME episode it would be if HPHS went to Indonesia to visit Tori's rescue and see the wonderful work she does.

      Hi there, Hugh, this Is Jen from Canada.
      I see you have often commented here with HPHS UA-cam channel, even on the baby watch live channel thatz die-hards-ville!! Or s it herdsville? 🧐😉
      But anyways, I’m curious what treatments you know of for that squamous carcinoma?
      I’m interested in health ng botanicals and especially whether animals can and do stand to benefit where humans have determined at least a genuine retail prospect, if not actual therapeutic value, when dosage and absorption are properly calculated.
      Besides who duznt love chamomile tea for nervous indigestion.
      So I Don’t assume you have a botanical treatment on this but if there is any such thing I ask you here. 🧐🤓🤩🥸

      @HughLlewellyn Рік тому

      @@Laurencemardon Oh hey Jen, fellow Mare Crew! Yeah, sorry, there's no magic bullet to defeat squamous cell carcinoma. It's usually fatal.
      Back in 1995, I had an Arabian mare who had it in her larynx. My vet recommened putting her down. It was growing quickly and cutting off her airway. But I wanted to try to save her, so he found a clinic at the University of Minnesota vet school in Minneapolis. They said they would take her right away. I hauled her up there from southeast Wisconsin. Drove all night. By the time we got there my mare was losing consciousness. They had to trach her right there in the driveway. She took a HUGE breath, and then they took her inside. Said they'd do her surgery immediately. Asked for a downpayment of $750 and agreed to let me make payment arrangements for the rest. They said she'd be there at least two weeks. We headed back home. They called that night to say she did fine and was recovering from surgery. They thought they'd gotten the entire tumor, but recommended chemo/and or cobalt room treatments. I gave them the ok to do the cobalt treatments because that would give her a better chance in case they'd missed any of it. I thought I was gonna go bankrupt paying for it all. I knew it would cost THOUSANDS. But when we picked her up they didn't have the paperwork ready, so they said they'd bill me when they got the totals. Well, I gave them a week, then called to see about arrangements to start paying. Still no paperwork. I called several times, and finally a vet talked to me and said that they'd never had a squamous cell carcinoma in that location inside a horse's throat before. They usually happen on their faces. My mare was a great teaching case. They had recorded the whole thing, and asked my permission to allow them to use her treatment to teach students with. They wanted to add her to their textbooks. I agreed. Then they told me there would be no bill. They weren't going to charge me. I was dumbfounded. So. My mare survived her bout with cancer, it never recurred. She went on to live a long, full life. The only lasting side effects were some hair loss around her throatlatch, and the treatments made her sterile, so I couldn't use her as a broodmare like I'd planned. But that was ok. She was a nice riding horse and I loved her. As far as I know they still have our case in their textbooks. And I only had to pay $750 total. I was SO LUCKY.

    You folks do such wonderful work with these horses. Love it. I was watching when you rescued a horse with a terrible wound. It got wrapped. The camera showed the horses face. My heart broke. She was in so much pain and had been treated so cruel she was crying. The tears were running down her face! 😢😢 If people can treat animals so bad what are they in life? I prayed. I hope there are horses in heaven. Thank you all for your hard work. ❤❤

    I dont understand how an organization of your size does not have proper fencing and pens for the unhandled mustang's you get in. Kory mentions that the mare hes working with has already went over a gate panel and another panel and crushed them. The lite weight portable panels you use for fencing is absolutely not safe for mustang's or really any unhandled horse. They are only 5ft tall and made of light weight materials, and are going to get a horse badly injured or killed. If I'm not mistaken a unhandled horse was already injured on one of these panels awhile back, and ended up being euthanized. I'm sure you've been working with these horses long enough to have proper facilities.

      I don't know all the politics with it. But if you notice where most of the turnover seems to be at this place, and many other places, like it, is when there is a large group of women. Even if they would've had one or two male vet techs in there. It would've made a huge difference. But you put a bunch of women together and it's nothing but cat fighting, gossip, and issues. if this place can get their staff to where they're about 50-50, male and female, they would have a lot less turnover.

      How is it wasted $$ when they're using their own equipment and their own on-staff vet? Took a very short time to do. As much static as they get about euthanizing horses, I don't blame them for covering all bases. Plus, she might not have had cancer, and why not find out what other issues she has while she's there?

      I understand your point. I made a comment about a year ago about how I didn't understand why they were taking x-rays of obviously broken legs, or obviously extremely severe injuries that had no cure. I don't know if they had the x-rays because they were trying to explain why they were putting the horse down and some people wouldn't believe it. I don't know. But I did feel that sometimes it was a waste of time and money and effort.
      I think with that gray horse, they should've tested for the cancer to begin with. And gone from there.

      I get what you mean, but they need to educate people so they stop letting these horses get to this point and taking them to a slaughter acution instead of doing the right thing for these horses. Since they are rescuing from a slaughter pipeline many many horses are in too bad shape and won´t be able to make it, that is why their job in educating people about this is so important. Also many ask why they got the last act of kindness so they are being transparent. It brings me peace to know they didn´t have to go through the slaughter house and didn´t have to live in pain anymore. I think they have a good balance of sad and fun and fuzziness in their episodes🥰

      I think the time of year has a lot to do with it. Horses get dumped at auctions in the fall/winter so people don't have to feed them. A lot of those horses should have been put down well before then.
