Wow...great job! We are in the process of converting a 2017 Ram 2500 High Top Promaster into a camper! We are filming each stage of the process and watching tons of videos on youtube along the way to get new ideas!! Thank you for some great ideas!!
Nice work on the insolation, and the light. This is a great van, love the panels too. Can't wait to see your upcoming steps.
MrZola1234 thanks Mr Zola and thanks for watching
I really like this video. You answered a lot of questions I've had. Good job.
dhamdifi thank you and im glad that has help you ,in future videos i will show how i install the kitchen.
Thanks for watching my channel
I am glad that you are covering your ceiling van ribs/beams with the same foam board insulation by covering the entire ceiling with the entire foam board panel. I thought about doing this earlier but wanted to see if it has been done. I haven't seen other van conversions applying your method.
T M thank you I really appreciate it and hope you can get your van ready and if I can help you with any questions just ask thanks for watching
GAF foam boards are no longer available for me to purchase from Home Depot. Would the Polystyrene XPS pink panther foam boards be just as good?
T M not sure if those about the same the best thing to do is look at the R value to compare it to see if is similar to Gag or try Lowes
Great video and awesome instructions.
John Moore V thank you John
Great videos, the best I've seen on these subjects. Where did you get the tv antenna and do you recall the brand, cost and distance in miles of reception. It would be helpful to know how far you were from the local towers when the video was done. There are a few available that look like this and reception ranges from 30-65 miles. Thank you.
Steve Russell I got it at Amazon and I believe was from 10 to $15 and has like probably like 25 to 30 mile range hope it helps
What screws did you use? I will be doing the same thing next week. I found that this insulation is not only lighter but better and easier to use then the scored pink insulation. Wish me luck!
i got the screws at home #8X 1 inch self drilling screws Code 801052 100 in a pack hope it helps and hope everything goes smooth , thanks for watching D rich
Why do you like the van with the separation between the driving area and the back? I know it would help with heat, but you loose the chair access and space. Also, do you do HVAC for work?
daikuone is great because i gain a wall extra to place my kitchen thats the reason why.
Great question thanks for your comment
I haven't install my insulation yet. It is now rainy season in WA. I can feel the condensation on the metal ceiling of my van. I don't feel any condensation on the metal walls and doors of my van.
Does sealing the foam insulation with the foam spray help in preventing condensation on the metal ceiling of the van? There is no way to know since we can no longer touch the metal ceiling.
Does the silver tap prevent condensation from occurring on the metal of the van (behind the insulation)?
I am going to glue a layer Thinsulate to the metal walls and doors of the van and then add a layer of reflectix as a vapor barrier and also a radiant barrier.
Since there is obvious condensation on the metal ceiling of my van, I hesitate gluing a layer of Thinsulate to the metal ceiling. The foam may be better. However, the folks who sold the Thinsulate to me insist that the Thinsulate will not absorb any condensation and that the Thinsulate is much better as a ceiling insulation than using the foam boards.
What do you think?
A bit concerned the ceiling will end up breaking when the van is on the move? It needs to be against a surface to create rigidity. Unless you plan on lining it later?
Geenine44 is been like that for a year and half and no sings of any movements if you see the video i placed expanding foam on the sides that makes it realy strong.
Thank for your observations and your comment
I heard spray foam attracts moisture, resulting in rust. I'm not sure about that as I'm in the learning process. What are your thoughts on that?
Rene Mayo the form is just to hold the insulation in place so very little for misused and it does not hold moisture that I can see I have done this before and all the Vans and I have taken out the insulation and have not seen a problem with this I hope it helps thanks for watching
Get an extension pole or broom stick with threaded end and attached it to the roller frame, should also be threaded, will make your paint job much easier!
Brian Darnell great idea thanks for your suggestion and for watching
How did your insulation effect road noise? I want to do mine to eliminate road noise as well
tom h it does resolve a lot of the noise from the road but remember the most noise comes from the floor and the wheel wells so you may want to do those also to prevent more noise because that's where the most noise happens
What paint did you paint the panels with... heat reflective? What mixture ratio if thats what you used?
Thankyou
John Hales I use semi-gloss pure white and I did that just for looks so it looks nice and clean
Have you noticed a difference in the temperature of the van now you have installed the insulation?
TheMackieBob yes is like night and day ,you can't be inside without insulation is very hot
How did you make the decision to go with GAF? Did you consider 3M's insulate material? Nice finish job
Dave Butler i loke the Gaf i had use it before and thanks for the reply and for watching
From a former HVAC, the tape is not insulated. It’s UV protected.
Thanks a lot for this video buddy. Where did you get the antenna? Any link on internet to buy it? Great job!!!
Canadian Trippers you can look at the video now in the description below and I place the link for the antenna that I recommend thanks for watching
Great project. How did you get the insulation to fit so well in the window and other open places it was installed?
Thor Matt I measured all the sides and then I just round it off little by little
nice job on those contoured cuts... I was hoping there was a system. thanks for video!
I am planning to buy one of these sprinters and slowly build living space with solar system and some other fun stuff, my question is why did you pick sprinter why not others like ford, nissan or dodge? My second question, how is the towing I see that you tow your boat. My boat and trailer is about over 4000lbs do you think it will handle it well?
MyGuyInMaui I had ford Vans before and they don't last as long the Sprinter's are well built they last longer better fuel economy compared to ford American built vans and if you plan to get a Sprinter try to get a V6 because right now I have V6 in a 4-cylinder and my boat weighs about 2,500 pounds and the V6 tows a lot better then 4-cylinder is not that great for towing so I definitely recommend you the V6 Sprinter it tows up to 5000 lb
Thank you bro, I think I am getting one of the v6 soon
MyGuyInMaui anytime buddy if I can help you in any other way just let me know and I'm sure you will love this printer
Mercedes Sprinter DIY mm,lol,''
MyGuyInMaui I went with Sprinter because this printer is better fuel efficiency has better warranty on the engine as far as engine goes and has 100,000 MI for the turbo included and has better access to the back as fart Towing goes I can tell a total of 5000 pounds if your trailer and boat is 4000 lb you're right at the edge if you are Towing other stuff then your boat in your trailer inside your van then you got to consider that extra weight to four thousand pounds should not be a big issue but if you go over that and get to the close to the $5,000 I think you going to have an issue with that I know Ford Chevy Can do a little bit more but Mercedes has a better reputation as far as better parts and better van, that's my opinion I hope it helps and thanks for washing my channel
This is the best video on how to use foam board in the sprinter. I really want to insulate the van with foam board and you explained it well. May I ask why didn't you add foam boards between the roof ribs like you did before? Thank you!
Stuffs thanks buddy ,i did not place insulation in between because it wasn't needed I tested it with a temperature laser gauge and the temperature was very good without insulating between the metal dividers.
awesome job man!
Nature Observer, where you at!? thanks buddy
Nature Observer, where you at!? alot of work
Maybe I’m wrong but using metal screws through the insulation and attached to the body, would t that give conductive temperature transfer? And no vapour barrier? So condensation can build up behind the insulation as well as on the screws and then any panels you’re going to build.... Not to mention a hole for light wiring...
George Moorey the screw conduct so little heat that you could never tell the diference ,thanks for your comment
Mercedes Sprinter DIY - In terms of temp yes I agree it would be minimal. However that would still allow condensation to accumulate in spots, especially with no vapour barrier. Good luck anyways happy trails 👍🏻
George Moorey thanks buddy
nice job.....is there any chance of more info on tv antenna???
Shane Gilpin yes look at the description below and you will see the description of the antenna that I purchase an Amazon thanks for watching
@7:30 for this window, you can use black plasti dip to cover it, it makes it look like it's a super dark tint job and it holds the glass together in case of anything.
L'avenir en Commun France Insoumise φ thats another option thanks for the recomendation
+Mercedes Sprinter DIY Thank YOU for uploading the very practical way to insulate a van ! I subscribed.
L'avenir en Commun France Insoumise φ thank you Lavenir and i will uploads new videos of my build soon thank you for watching my channel and subscribing
That polyiso is pretty fragile to use as a ceiling. Aren't you worried about puncturing it? Your build looks good and clean. Nice job!
pterodactylptroll great question, i have used it before and i had no problems ,thanks for your great question and for watching my channel
Nice Presentation
Paul Kohler thanks buddy and thanks for watching.
greetings
Buen vídeo 👌 gracias.
gracias a ti por ver my video , saludos
Where you get the power from ? and I do not see any solar wires and panel ?
i get my power from running the engine and wen i have power from a rv resort or land line
Thank you MSDIY, well done! There seems to be little info on the effect of insulation in Hot Air climates. Does insulation really help keep the van cool, if you do not have a completely 'sealed' compartment. Does some insulation help? i.e. just the roof insulated really well? For a small Nissan NV 200, would factory AC keep the van reasonably cool, assuming you could insulate the walls and roof "pretty good". There are so many videos on insulation and many on ACs, but few combine the two subjects in a coherent manner. Also, is solar pretty much "out" as far as van AC these days? Just curious on your thoughts since you are a real pro:)
Gruber Accountancy yes if you insulate the van walls and roof it makes a huge difference on your AC you will keep more of the cool inside, solar I have not looked into solar yet but running the AC I'm sure the Batters were drained out quicker because air conditioning takes a lot of power but if you only use it for other things TV small appliances like fridges solar is great and thanks for watching my videos and if I can help in any other way please let me know take care
MSDIY - thanks for the last reply. I do have a follow-up Q: On one of your videos, you installed a small home AC Unit in a MS w\ the fan mounted on the underside of the car. Can I ask, what was powering the Unit. I saw you hook up the power cord, so it must have been power coming from the battery to run it? Just curious ..thanks again.
Gruber Accountancy definitely use a foil-back insulation to combat radiant heat in hot/ sunny climates like he has in this video.
Gruber Accountancy insulation is very important to keep your temperature inside how you want it without it with the air conditioning on you will not make a difference will definitely recommend it to have insulation inside your van
10:00 it would probably get way better signal if you put it behind the blocked window.
That is an awesome idea buddy i did not think of that 👍👍
DO you have any problem with wind coming in thru the front windsheild?
dale kroll no not at all , you feel wind coming under the dash?
I had a friend who bought a stripped one,and he had a problem with wind coming thru his windsheild.
dale kroll whow thats bad did he get it New.
I had 3 sprinters and never had that problem
What did you use for the paneling?
it came from the factory with it , it was a add on option and cost like $700 extra
Could you please let me know where you bought the installation from and how many panels did you get? Also what roughly was the cost?
I just bought a new 170" Extended so I may need a bit more is my guess..Thx :-)
Small Spaces Big Places it took me about 4 to 5 panels and I purchase the panels at Home Depot if you have the extended version you may need about three to four more panels I spend on my insulation between 100 and $150
Thank you for the info. Seems quite reasonable on the cost. I'm seeing quite a bit of holes in the ribs that go across the ceiling. How did you line up the screws so you wouldn't end up hitting one of those holes?.
Small Spaces Big Places can you believe it I only eyeball it and did not mist once, just take your time and don't rush into it that's all.
and you will love how well insulated it will feel
Hi, does anyone know why my rockwool insulation in the walls of my sprinter conversion would be damp? The walls were insulated with rock wool, kingspan and a bit of expanding foam. Then they were covered with foil vapour barrier and foil tape. I then battened and ply lined the walls. So I drilled out the electrical hook up today and discovered the rock wool is damp and the van hasn't even been lived in yet. Any help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks.
i have no clue buddy ,thats why i used this insulation to prevent moisture problems, hope you get it solved .
you sure its rockwool, its supposed to be damp proof? Must be coming from the outside, do you have any exterior holes there are exposed underneath? Are the wheel arches healthy? Seen a few videos on here, where the builder has added the sprayfoam and had to dig it out after discovering water sitting in the bottom of the wall panels which eventually led back to the wheel arch. Good luck
Cienfueguero jajajajajajaja cono no me escapo de ti mi herma, yo sabía que conocía esa voz jajajajajajajaj
Nistel Rodriguez jajajaja encontraste mi otro cannal eres un campion ,saludos Nistel y buenas noche
Are you sure you have created a barrier for ait? If it gets through the insulation it will condense on the metal wall, then rust.
Seven Sevens yes is all protected
Thanks for you comment
I agree Seven Sevens. There is an air gap between the insulation boards and the ceiling/walls. The air in those gaps will rise and fall in temperature, creating conditions for condensation to occur.
Rod Buchan hello Rob
I Pat expanding foam all the way around ceiling
Yr are sooo wrong six
perfect job ! I also really like this video . You answered a lot of detailed questions I've had for sometime now.
Frank Ross thanks Frank im glad you like ir and thanks for watching my channel
4x4 sprinter ?
Simon Leung I wich lol is regular 4x4 was too much money, like $8000 more
What are those gray panels?
they came from Mercedes wen i order the van
Lol, A TV is the last thing ill put in my van.
You insulated before roof vent, and cables for lights & other stuff? no solar panels wires??
nice option too👍
You can cut through it!
Where is the air conditioning for cargo space?
Check out my other videos in my channel and you'll see the installation of the air conditioner you will be surprised because I split a window air conditioner👍
Did you insulate the floor?
Igor Ahmedov great question here in florida we dont have super low winters thats why there is no need of insulating the floor ,plus the is not bare metal it has a wood floor plus i will instal a carpet that is very comfortable.
thanks for watching
I've done this but you are a much better Craftsman!
paul mryglod thanks my friend im sure you did great too
gj man
Harri Raati really appreciate it
Good job, thanks for your video. 3 thumb down must be your competitors
johnny TT lol thanks buddy im sure is the competition, thanks for watching
Was this a competition?
What did you power the TV off?
H.E.T Productions i powered it with a inverter i placed in the description bellow the link for it if you want to check it out.
Thanks for watching
Mercedes Sprinter DIY Thanks! 🖒
newsubscriber lets c what u got. simple living high thinking. SOUTH-AFRICA
thank you steven
By leaving the beams uninsulated you have tons of thermal bridges. That insulation is not as effective as it could be been.
very tru but i was concern about moister thats why i did not placed more insulation.
No vapour barrier?
BTI Driving no need for this application I have done it in other Vans and never have issues with it
It's pointless. Better to let the water drip out and use moisture resistent insulation
why block out the window?what you doin in there.cuttin up bodies?use curtains .Its nice to have a window to look out of.
toppertruthio LOL no it's because I use this truck also for work and it can't be looking like an RV all the time either that's why
ok gotcha
Those screws will be thermal bridges.
timothy790110 I agree but it is so little the difference that you would never tell the difference from the heat that those screws are going to give so it's not going to make a big impact you never going to feel it
is good to use aluminum.it keeps all the emf's radiation into your fan.is good for your overall health.you do know that right??
Royal Regatta yes thank you
Omg bro nobody cares about the tv. Nice job on the limo tint.
thanks
@@mercedessprinterdiy8556 I appreciate your posts!
That spray is toxic.
Grant Ryan only until it drys up after that is ok
People are toxic.
Why go stupid with the music
thanks stevel i love it im glad you loved it too 🤣👍👍
