End up I pried open with a quarter without scratching any paint. It was the ice on the bottom kinda fusing the fuel door. Problem solved. But still thanks for your video.
Been having this problem a lot on my 2015 STi... Annoying and a bit embarrassing when you pull up to a service station in a brand new car and have to keep walking back to try the fuel door release again and again. Will give this DIY fix a go :)
I bet it is. My neighbor across the street watched me fight with it after washing my car, being that it's new and all. It's a good thing I caught this before going to the gas station.
If you are ever stuck I just stick my wallet under the unlock mechanisms latch and then gently tuck my debit card behind the fuel door to help it open. Trick never fails just remember to remove your wallet from the latch when you try to close the fuel door or else it won't click back with the mechanism.
Been watching a lot of chanel for wrx's and i never had those problem that you guys mention. I guess im lucky enough and hopefully it stays that way. Anyway, nice subie and good job fixing it. We need more people like you so that we have referrence on how to fix things come the problem one day.
Thanks. I'd never thought I'd encounter this problem but it's definitely a quick fix that still works as of today. For the most part, most of the usual problems and failures you hear or read on the internet are only a small percentage of the entire fleet of cars so don't let that scare you.
What's up Iain. Last I remembered, Subaru just smothered silicone grease on the unlocking mechanism and haven't paid attention since. I figure I never cared until it happened to me, lol.
The dealer service includes replacing the spring inside the door, not just greasing the latch. It's free to get fixed too. www.cars101.com/recalls.html
Alex Cline Nah. This is too small for me to bring in to the dealer. I'd bring it in for safety issues over this. It has been well over a month, it still opens like a champ for me.
The TSB replaced the spring but that actually didn't fix it for me. Subaru expanded the fix to include replacing the entire fuel assembly saucer (Part# 51478VA002). My dealer's service techs had to take the spring from the TSB and fit it in with the new saucer assembly (it had the old spring) and my fuel door was finally fixed after 2 parts replacements and 5 months... Turns out this problem is showing up on the new Outback and Legacy too. They probably use the same parts.
squall1770 did this end up helping you? I am having the same issue now and I’m getting ice in there and I was going to try this. It is driving me crazy not being able to get it open.
My cover gets stuck sometimes because of ice between the body and the plastic cover. I think it's mostly because of the aggressive curves on my levorg. I don't have a warm garage. So the ice can stay on for week's. Maybe a powerful flashlight could remove the ice. I've usually scrape it out with a credit card.
I haven't looked at mine yet (haven't had the issue yet) but if the dealers are just greasing the mechanism as a fix, would it be possible to just WD-40 it instead?
I had same issue about fuel door at 2015 outback. I was stop by dealership 3 times and they just adjust locking pin. However problem is not solved. So, i was upset and call to subaru america customer service then visit dealership Again. Finally, they adjust cable for fuel door open and solved problem now. No charge for this repair. Before you going to dealership, call subaru america first, and after they gave you case no. Then go to dealership. My subaru dealership are SUCKS! Liberty subaru at ramsay nj. Do not go there!
I will try it. Thanks for the tip !!! Every fuckn winter, my fuel door , and latch is stuck due to the snow turning into ice !! It pisses me off, because I need to splash hot water just to be able to open it !!! Fuckn annoying!!!
Guy Galperin "what's the price of this kind of car" sounds a lot like you want to know the price of the car. Typically people can't read your mind over the Internet. If you'd like to ask about how much money he has spent on modifications to his new car then I would try asking him that. It's a pretty solid way to use the Internet.
The fact that my 2016 WRX is doing this just proves even more that subaru is lacking in design and material quality. Autodimming mirror is near useless, gas cap gets stuck. Wheels bend way to easy (less than 1000 and bent one on a SMALL pot hole that my 07 civic, fiance's 14 accord and 15 mustang gt have all hit) and lets not forget the dashboard MPG is FALSE. claiming 3-6 mpg better than an actual fill up. I am less than impressed with this car and im left wondering why i bought into the subaru hype.
Apparently I search this clip on youtube because now I have this issue. Thanks for posting this. Will try it but i need to pump gas first!

BTW - Subaru's fix for this isn't just grease. There is a TSB and they replace parts in the fuel door assembly.

Where did you buy the D-shaped adhesive? I checked Home Depot, they don’t have it
Worked for my 2015 WRX. Thanks!
I live in New England and mine froze shut a couple times. Ice was building up right where you put the rubber. This should take care of the problem.

Good idea but still, bring it back! They'll order the parts for you. I'm bringing mine in to get replaced this week.
I'll wait. My personally know my local Subaru sales, parts, and service reps at our dealerships. Lol, they know that I'm a DIYer.
Thank you. It's happened twice now and I was on empty. Very concerning and I was alone and no where near home.
No 45+ second intro? OMG ;) Thanks for the video though! I haven't had it happen on my 2015 (yet)
Lol, only for B-rolls. I'm currently working on a new, shorter intro so stay tuned for that.
continua sendo o melhor carro do mundo subaru STI.........BRAZIL
Definitivamente!!

Ice is the worst! Perhaps some hot water can loosen it up before turning to ice again, lol.
@@octurbojoe yes. if I only remember to check for ice before go to the gas station.
@@vectraB97 You can always go in the store and ask for a cup of hot water.
@@octurbojoe I'll try to remember that next time;-) a small plastic bag with warm water would work. I should buy a roll and keep it in the car.
What size is the piece that fixes the problem my 2015 Subaru legacy just started doing the same thing
I've had a block of foam jammed in there for months now...gonna try this so it doesn't look so ghetto...thanks
Right on. Nice to see someone having the same concept of using foam for this fix.
now I know why gas guys were saying open trunk as I've tried couple of times :) thanks for sharing, will give a try...
Oh no, haha. Hope this works for you too.
I though it was from washing the car n got froze, I had to call the cashier to help me open it lol ... I'll try it n hope it works out . Thanks
I haven't looked at mine yet (haven't had the issue yet) but if the dealers are just greasing the mechanism as a fix, would it be possible to just WD-40 it instead?
+Mook aton ....I tried that twice and it did not work.
+Mook aton wd40 is not a lubricant. Its a water displacer. It will dry up in a few days and youll have to reapply. use white lithium grease.
try cutting that piece in half and putting one on the top and one on the bottom... might help with the cap sticking out only on the bottom a little
I'll try that. Thanks!!

I'll have to get that a try.
Thanks

I haven't had any issues with mine, but this is good to know just in case. Nice job bro!
Thanks. It's been over a month now and it opens just fine.
OCTurboJoe Nice! By the way... this is Spee D. I changed my name.
