On the flip side I have became a runner since transitioning to homeworking because I was expected to take on the school run because I was at home. Previously I would have gone to my crossfit gym at 7am before heading to work and the grandparents would handle the school run. I must say though I love walking my daughter to school and the flexibility of working from Home. Hoping to pick up the gym again in a few years time.
I think we need to do a shout out to the ultra runners. I was in North Wales this year and saw a bloke and his whole outfit completely clashed and immediately knew he was an ultra runner 😁 🙌 Every item of clothing was fit purpose and what it looked like didn’t come into it. I absolutely love this and try and live by it for my 5k runs 😁
Andy being (IMO) really brave and introspective, putting himself out there for us. Thank you sir. Just thanks. THEN immediately 180 Salty Sarah, loved that too. The 3 of you 😊🎉❤
Want to echo what Andy said about not caring what people wear or what you wear when you run. I laugh at myself looking back at the heavy jogging bottoms and regular 'court' trainers I ran in (including when I joined a club) but actually I love that I could do that and wasn't judged
As someone who puts a lot of pressure on myself in most aspects of life, running is the one things where I can be authentically me. I don't care how I dress or look, I'm fully living in the moment and focused
Andy makes a really good point that it’s great you can wear almost anything and no one seems to be judgmental in running, compared to cycling where it seems to be a much bigger deal. Just another reason running is the better sport 😉 Great podcast 👌
Totally agree with this. I've been out on club runs and club cycles - the cycling community is so judgemental in comparison to the running community. (Obviously there are exceptions to both!)
I am showing my age but thinking about my previous life when I was in high school in the 1960s there were two no-no's that my gym teachers stressed - (1) Always wear white socks since the dyes of color socks will seep into your possible blisters; and (2) If you run you never should swim since you are using different muscles, which would affect your running. How concepts can change over the years. Great Podcasts
Looking forward to the daily Paris pods! But quick Q: Will you be releasing the podcasts on TRC's UA-cam channel as well as via the traditional podcast platform? (I'm a UA-cam person, and don't wanna miss 'em!) Also, apropos of Andy's body-dysmorphia comment, I would REALLY appreciate an entire discussion dedicated to that topic, please and thank you!
I'm with Andy here. Cycling is all about the unwritten rules and experienced cyclists are not very welcoming to newbies, whereas runners don't care what others wear and are more welcoming and inviting (mostly). I hurt my hamstring running and decided I would use my bike to stay fit while I recover. I asked in a group if a certain trail was a good place to go for a good workout and was welcomed with "don't bring those slow bikes here" and "what's the point of biking if you're not going fast" kind of comments. I got criticized for not owning a $2k bike 🤦🏽
Some people love running and have zero desire to run a marathon. Some people lift weights and have no desire to be a competitive body builder. Both are fine. You're still a runner if you don't ever run a marathon it's not the goal for everyone.
Had to comment when I heard mention of PIV - way back in my undergrad days I did some research work with a professor doing Particle Image Velocimetry and also Particle Tracking Velocimetry (lower particle density, but tracking of individual particles instead of the statistical movement of the larger masses in PIV)! That took me back!
Running is in fashion and trending in my algorithm and in my head but is definitely not trending for everyone else in my life 🤪. I still love it and I love feeling cute in my run kit and I run by myself.
I think an episode on body dysmorphia and disordered eating in the elite athletic community would be really eye opening- especially bringing in a male perspective. I follow Phily Bowden, Lucy Davis Fit, Allie Ostrander and Natacha Oceane and all of them admit to having issues around their body image and/or relationship with food previously. It would be a bit more on the serious side so might have to be a stand alone piece rather than a regular podcast episode as the awesome usual banter and humour may not lend itself to the seriousness of the issue. Just a thought 😊
There are three other runners in our housing development of about 170 homes. One of them is our son. Another is the wife of a friend and the last is a guy that runs around 5 AM so pretty hard-core. There are far more walkers and dogwalkers than there are runners in my area. About two-thirds of the population are overweight or obese and some fraction of the rest may be runners but I'd not call running as back in fashion in my state. And as bad as this is, we're ranked the 15th fittest state.
Hi from Boston! Thanks so much for these podcasts! They keep me motivated as I train for my first marathon. I found the question at the end interesting. Would love to hear if there's any research regarding how early exposure to running might affect your cardiovascular base. For example, if you start running at 10 years old vs. as an adult.
I really need to move across the pond so I can run with all my fave UA-camrs. I’m training *spiritually* with Aubrey for my first marathon here in October. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I enjoy that I can just tune out while running. Also being on business trips about 6 months a year it’s the easiest sport to keep up. Still looking to find some time for a nice ultra trail run
I suspect the interest in ultra marathon might be driven by marathon promoters. London Marathon Events and Let's Do It send me loads of emails encouraging me to sign up for ultra marathon events as well as wild multi-day hill marathons. If you run marathons/half marathons you get sent this stuff on the monthly. Another factor may be writers such as David Goggins 'You can't hurt me anymore' who makes me hungry to push my own limits.
I cycle & run. I think it’s important to make a distinction that it’s been road cycling where there has been an elitist attitude about what you wear but in other cycling disciplines such as gravel & mountain biking no one cares what you wear. Refreshingly I’ve seen a change in road cycling & a push back to the so called “rules”.
When it's cold I wear skins to help my legs get warmer quick and to stay warm but I have shorts over the top. No one needs to see me just in skins/tights......
From Andy's comments about running shoes from the nineties. The top shoes from the early 90's were Nike air max. If you were lucky you would have a pair. They're probably still a good shoe to wear but no one would...x
Me in Michigan learning that Lake Michigan got moved to the Canadian border🤣 you should come do the Detroit Marathon, you get to run across the bridge to Canada!!
Question for the podcast: What strategy should Ingerbettson and Kerr employ to give themselves the best shot at gold. I think Kerr is going to tuck in & go hard from 800 out. Obviously, this one is directed to Rick ;)
The cycling/running fashion attitude are almost opposite where I'm from. You get on a bike in whatever works, because a bike is often a vehicle more than an exercise machine. But you dress to run. For me, it's tennis dresses and skorts (that I also sometimes bike in).
It's taken me a while, but the way I judge how I look and how I run now, is contemplating how I would look at other runners. And 100% of the time, all I think to myself when I see another runner is "Oo you go guy/girl, smashing it. Can't wait to get out later", without even looking or thinking about how they're dressed. That led me to think that, unless you're a real a**hole, you're not judging me; so, as long as I'm not wearing a sarong (because who does that), I think I'm good in my mid-level kit without having to spend a fortune to have a tick embossed on the front!
Jaysus, socialise after exercise? I sweat so much I can't even contemplate doing anything after a run other than removing my disgustingly wet clothes and showering.
In 2016 needless to say I was super clueless when it comes to running, had just downloaded C25K and I would only go out on my own, head down, praying I wouldn’t bump into anyone I know. The idea of staying out in my running kit in front of people terrified me, so when a friend invited me to a running club I showed up in denim shorts with my Oyster card in my pocket in case it all went down hill… Fast forward to today, 10 marathons later, and I have more running kit than regular clothes in my wardrobe 😂
I have a few of my own rules for running! For example, the split short shorts are for elite runners only, what benefit would the average runner gain from wearing them? Men wearing leggings without shorts over the top is a big no-no, I don't want to see a blokes meat and two veg all squished up! I always wear shorts with the built in briefs to keep everything in place, but apart from that, anything goes!
I think exercise trends are really cyclical. Whilst companies like Gymshark were popular, lifting was the "thing". As Andy said, Hoka is very trendy now, and New Balance is enormously popular with young people. I also think, sadly, that image trends have changed and are moving away from "strong" being the way to look, back to "skinny", and cardio lends itself well to that trend. I blame ozempic 😂.
As someone who has been running for a long time. I would hardly see anyone else running, compared to now...Hell yeah it's become more popular/"fashionable". It's a sport where the only skill you need is to have two legs.
My hair grows into a natural fauxhawk. Well it used to, now is just an afro. I used to get bullied mercilessly for it, literally the day after Beckam had one on purpose for a match all those popular losers with no sense of irony or the brains to form their own opinions came in with the exact hair cut they had a couple of days before been beating me up over.
There are the "glowy" sweaty runners...and then there are the "so sweaty I look like I jumped in the pool" sweaty runners...I am unfortunately the second variety! Grim! 😂
With more people working from home, the barrier of entry to establishing an exercise routine has never been lower.
Couldn’t agree more
On the flip side I have became a runner since transitioning to homeworking because I was expected to take on the school run because I was at home. Previously I would have gone to my crossfit gym at 7am before heading to work and the grandparents would handle the school run. I must say though I love walking my daughter to school and the flexibility of working from
Home. Hoping to pick up the gym again in a few years time.
Working from home gives me more time to run as I have saved commuting time. But I do get that for some it may lower their exercise.
I think we need to do a shout out to the ultra runners. 👏👏👏
I wear what performs well and costs the least. This can make for some pretty awful-looking outfits.
We all know Sarah used to sing acapella. But Rick’s song is more of a knee-slapper, so I guess that means he sings a-patella.
😂

Petrolheads have always mocked cyclists for innumerable legitimate reasons
Some people love running and have zero desire to run a marathon.
Some people lift weights and have no desire to be a competitive body builder.

I have never thought about how I look running, I wear what works x
Great!!
I think running is an easy entry, and run clubs are helping it become a way for others to meet strangers and hopefully build community.
That means I can ask you guys to extend these podcasts to an hour for 10 days straight 😍
I love Sarah's lizard impression, makes me smile 😂
Haha
For me as a science nerd and mechanical engineer, you could have gone on about PIV...
Eventhough i came for the banter!

For the Brits remember HOMES for the Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior) 👍
We do a 4x 1mi relay up near Middlesbrough, you should enter as the running channel and see what it’s like 😁 they are not as fun as they sound 😂
Oooooo we’ll look into it thank you!

try to upload more live runs like the "5k pb looks like." tho it will be long but i think its worth it and be more relatable and entertaining.

they'll be on all podcast platforms from the 2nd!

Yep! I feeeeel this! I look like I've jumped in the pool after all my runs, 5km, ultra, summer or winter! 😂
This seems to have been a divisive point 😂
I stink after running, if I am going for breakfast or brunch with my group after a run, I make sure I have a spare t-shirt in my car

Who's socialising after going for a run?! I'd be a sweaty mess with hair like a bird's nest - I'm going STRAIGHT home!

Nahhhhh

Yes guess it is but maybe the Olympics makes people want to do more sports
We hope so!!
Body dismorphia is a thing. And not talked about enough when it comes to too much sport and even more so men.
Of course…. Who wants to sit on a piece of overprized carbon anymore?
I came here for the science but I stayed for the useless banter 😊
