Thank You! The paint didn't turn out exactly how I had envisioned it to look like but when life give you a potatoe make some fries out of it and enjoy! Thanks for watching!
I tossed my MPC GTO in the recycling bin. It wasn't worth my time. Hooligan ran over his MPC GTO with his car on his channel. It was funny 😄. I have a Revell Monogram 66 GTO. I'll build that someday. It's a nice kit.
Sorry to hear that... It really isn't all that bad if you take your time and accept the fact that it has problems. I knew this going into the build which made it easier for me because I basically had a heads up on what to look for. I wish you luck with your Revell GTO, it may be better than this one was.
Thank You! As I have no affiliation with the kit manufacturer, I can give an honest assessment of the good, the bad, and the ugly of each kit that I build. I show these things so that you all know what to look out for if you decide to buy and build this one for yourselves. Thanks for watching the video!
Thank you! The color didn't turn out the way that I had envisioned it but it does look pretty good. As for the stance I was pleased that the Racemaster slicks actually fit the finished cars appearance just right.
Thanks! The rims came with the kit and I liked them from the start. The Racemaster slicks came from another kit and I think that they actually make it look better. Thanks for watching!
Id say you made great work out of that thing! The paint turned out wonderful. Would look mean as hell next to last week's Chevelle. You've built a lot of Pontiacs this year. There is in fact a drag version of this kit (Weekend Warrior) and thats the version ive built myself. Its almost the exact same as this, only it also comes with a pair of Firestone slicks, a fire extinguisher, and a Christmas tree. Here's my experience with the MPC 67 GTO: I may just be ass at modeling but i couldnt even get my engine to set in properly, i ended up cutting out that crossmenber underneath the oil pan and then fashioning my own and gluing it back in. Come to find out, I didnt even get it centered in the engine bay after all that. I also had issues with the front grille. I used the riser blocks but as you say they hinder more than help. When the build was finished, my rear tires were actually rubbing against the front of the rear fenders. The exhaust pipes werent an issue for me because i went with the headers, so i cut the stock pipes off and i just left it with the open headers. I wanted to use the blower on my build, so i opted for the custom hood with the gaping schnoz, but that thing was tweaked to hell and back, and even after using some hot water and a lot of bending, its still not even close to looking like it should, but unfortunately i didnt realize this until final assembly. Aside from the ill fitting parts, the other major thing i dislike about this kit is how low the detail is. Barely anything under the hood, interior molds shallow and hardly noticeable, the car seems to be straight up missing some leaf springs for the rear, etc. Not to mention the amount of flash on everything. I ended up taking that build as an opportunity to use some of my spare parts to liven it up. So, the car ended up with the racing seats from the 66 Wildcat kit, brake discs and a steering wheel from the 64 Olds 442, front tires from the 67 Impala SS, traction bars from the 51 Bel Air, and sponsor decals from various kits. So, from my relatively low experience building kits, yeah id say this is the worst one in terms of the kit itself. Maybe one day ill build another and really take my time on it. When i built mine, i had just come off of doing the fantastic Revell 69 Boss 302 and was not in the mood or mindset to deal with a fussy kit like this one.
Well, Thank You! I have them sitting side by side on the shelf and they do look pretty mean next to each other. Looking back I only see that I have built a total of four Pontiac's since the beginning of the year. Ironically, they have all been GTO's of differing years. I have seen the "Weekend Warrior" kit at the Hobby Lobby but I haven't had the urge to jump on in as of yet. This kit here has all of the parts that you mentioned from the WW kit except for the Firestone slicks. That engine/transmission was a tricky little bugger to get into place. Once I figured it out it went well but it had this weird trick about it. My mind was telling me that it went one way but in reality, it didn't. There is this insanely large amount space under the hood which also led to questions of whether I had it together correctly or not. I believe that this particular year of Pontiac (1:1) actually had a four link coil spring rear suspension. So that would explain the lack of detail in the model kit and the lack of leaf springs. Sounds like you did that build justice with all of the parts cannon parts you blasted it with.
Nice build. I think your approach was good. Yes, the kit has its quirks but they're manageable. I have an original kit from 1984 and that kit doesn't have the issue with the grille. I think when RC2 owned MPC, they modified the molds. BTW the color looks great.
Thank you. I had heard that this one was problematic, but it wasn't really that bad. The paint color was actually supposed to be more even, but it messed up on me. It looked kind of cool, so I just went with it.
Coincidentally I'm building the mpc 1970 gto on my channel right now. After watching your unboxing, a lot of the parts are the same. The 70 also has a bunch of fitment issues. The front bumper also didn't fit right. The interior in mine floats on the car just like yours. Looks like all mpc did was change the body for 70 but left all the quality issues the same. Im looking forward to seeing if you have any similar issues to mine when building.
I don't think that I have a 70 GTO in my stash other than the most recently release GTO Super Stocker and I haven't even cracked the seal on that kit yet. I'm totally convinced that the manufacturers of these kits swap interior tubs etc. around just to save money on re-tooling the correct one. I also believe that since most, if not all manufacturing has been moved to China there has been an ongoing serious lack of quality control. So, we, as a model building community are stuck trying to fix what should have never left the factory floor. It also doesn't help that a lot of people view this hobby as making or playing with toys. Since I started this channel I have a number of people that I used to chat with frequently on Facebook suddenly go silent just because I play with toys (as one of them said to me). Anyway, good luck with your build there.
@scaleautoguysworkbench i get a similar reaction when I talk about my building and channel..lol. as for the quality, my kit is an original made in the USA, i thinj the quality issue is related more to the initial tooling and mpc than where it's made. I've built a few mpc vintage kits and they have had similar issues. I enjoy fixing them ,it's part of the challenge
@JustBelowAverageModelCars I was in from 82 to 02. Uss Wainwright (homeported in Charleston) was my first duty station right out of boot. I got on board in late October when she was deployed. I spent the first year on her in the shipyard.
@@JustBelowAverageModelCars Thank you for yours as well! 20 years went by pretty fast. When I was at my retirement ceremony I had a moment where I wondered where all of those years went. I now have been retired longer than I was in and I am still wondering where all of those years went...
I started building this kit and got so frustrated I threw it in the trash. I'm 67 and have been building since I was 10 and never got so put out that I threw it in the trash
I have had a few kits like that over the years. I Can't recall ever throwing any of them into the bin though. My most recent kit that did that to me was the Christine Plymouth. It wasn't the build so much as it was the paint not cooperating. I just put it back in the box and put it up on a shelf for about three months. I'm 62 and I have been building since I was about 7 years old. I have always like a challenge to building but there are times when you have to throw in the towel on a project even if it is only for a while.
There are a few different companies that make the 67 GTO. As to their quality... It's anyone's guess. I have only ever built this one and an AMT convertible. I have to say that the AMT had less issues than this one did, which is surprising...
Hello Wayne, I'm sorry but I do not have any big block valve covers in my parts box at this time. Might I suggest that you look on FaceBook for Model Car groups or possibly Ebay?. You may find someone in one of the FaceBook groups that may have some. There is usually one person or two that has something like that on hand that is willing to sell. Wish I could help you. I wish you good luck in your search.
That is not surprising. The cost for making molds is astronomical and if using a similar interior tub in different kits saves on production costs I'm pretty sure that the manufacturer is going to take those steps.
I think that depends on which kit that you're talking about. I don't have a bunch of MPC kits but I have had some good, some bad, and some that were quite terrible.
Way back when I was first starting to build my mom worked for MPC when it was in Mt. Clemons, Michigan. She was a mold operator. Because of this my brother and I got some pretty cool kits to build. Over the years MPC's quality has really gone to poo. I only bought and built this kit to see what all of the hype was about it. Turns out that a lot of the complaints were true and mostly accurate. Still, it was a fun build even with all of its quirks. Like I said on my FaceBook page, It's not the best kit that I've ever built but it certainly isn't the worst either.
For all the issues, I think it turned out great. Love the color!

For all the trouble you had with it, it sure came out great, definitely a pass for me! What clear did you use in this? Thanks for sharing!
Thank you. I used Future floor polish with all coats, including the mica powder mix. Thanks for watching.

Interiortub is for a Convertible
That is not surprising. The cost for making molds is astronomical and if using a similar interior tub in different kits saves on production costs I'm pretty sure that the manufacturer is going to take those steps.
Agreed it is MPC kits aren’t very good

horrible kit not a fan of mpc anyway

Any kit from ROUND 2 models are junk. They need to invest in new molds for better castings
