- X Rebirth VR is part of the 'X' franchise, a series going all the way back to 1999. This entry into the series was first released in 2017, and was something I was vaguely aware of at the time. But it wasn't a game I ever pushed myself to dive into, until now.
In this video, I give a very brief overview of what I make of the game after just a couple of hours of play. It will be something I'll continue with, and will hopefully make more videos on how I get on!

Primary reason why this game was met with negative reception, apart from the extremely buggy release (of the flatscreen version that is), is that you were locked to flying only one ship. It wasn't unprecedented in the X series, but all the recent titles gave you the freedom to fly just about any ship, fighter sized to capital class.
They backpedaled hard with X4 and followed the X3 formula again, with a little inspiration from Rebirth like some of the ship designs, the ability to walk around stations and the game engine itself. And became quite the success, still releasing huge patches and expansions 6 years after release.
If VR was more mainstream, this might have become quite popular, because there's just so little to choose from in VR. There's Elite, and that's about it for sandbox space sims that I've heard of at least (I don't count NMS as a space sim, because the focus on space combat and flying is just so low).
I remember playing this when it first came out a few years ago and really liking it. I think the controls where meant for the Rift controllers and flying around worked really well then, but I don't think the Quest controllers work in the same way. I have tried it on the Quest and I think I found joypad easier. Pirating ships I remember was an epic experience. You can also patch in the complete Rebirth game which is much bigger and I think had a different plot but was a bit buggy.
Found you through the No Man's Sky DLSS Test video - which I liked very much as I am still experimenting with these upscalers to find the right config. Anyways - I tried to make X4 work in VR by using an OpenTrack and ReShade (Depth3D) combo. While it works with okay'ish results, I did consider getting X: Rebirth in VR. It looks interesting from this video... thanks for the pointer.
Where ya at on all this now? I added rebirth to wishlist is as far as Ive gotten.

This game had a "tragic" launch with a lot of bugs but the worst is that the fans were waiting for a X3 sequel (AKA X4); but XRebirth is a game in the X universe that follows the main X franchise Story but have key mechanic differences from the previous and more recent X titles. So it was very badly received by the fans. The X franchising being a very niche type of games being received by its core fans so badly made the game fall in a black hole... Besides this Egosoft keep fixing it and improving it and sincerely it is a game that in it's current state i really like. And you always have the options to change a thing here and there with mods in the Steam workshop.
Yeah and in the VR version, a lot of it's shortcomings (like only piloting one ship) are a lot more forgivable. I also remember the controls working well on Vive but not translating well to Index when I upgraded. I had a brief discussion with an Egosoft rep on the Steam forums who was interested in our take on the controls because they were looking into a potential VR dlc for X4. But that was a couple of years ago and I haven't heard anything else about it since.
I play this game now on Index trough Revive because i bought on oculus store for my former CV1 and egosoft want me buy on steam again... (no). Playing 150 % 120hz ultra on 4090 and is absolutely amazing. Knuckles works at 80%... but my hotas X52 pro works without problem. I play with mod from egosoft forum, adding campaign, open doors on stations and many fixes. Only missing model copilot, but voice works. Realy miss me snap turn on stations because is made not natural way and cause me sicknes..I use mouse rotation because is fast and is simmilar to snapturn.

I've always been curious about this game, as a longtime Elite player, but the reviews for the X-VR game were always so mediocre that I wasn't sure what to think, and I ultimately never gave it a chance. I couldn't even really tell what the specific problems were meant to be, since it always looked pretty good from afar or when I saw brief glimpses of the game in VR. After you've learned the game I am interested in what ya think of it, but no worries if you don't feel like making a video about it of course.
How is the flight model? I do love Elite's flight model, but maybe X is going for something different since this series always seemed to be more about setting up space stations and fleets of ships and etc etc, and I can't tell if it's a nice 6DOF flight model or not (like with thrusters we can use to strafe in any direction, you prolly know what I mean). Hope ya have fun with it!
The flight model feels quite well refined. It has strafing from thrusters etc, and once I’d tweaked the controls in settings the ship felt pretty good to fly. I wouldn’t put it to the level of Elite necessarily, but it felt pretty good to me.
I definitely need a lot more time with it before giving a definitive recommendation though.
Rebirths VR was decently done, main issue was the underlying game was absolute garbage. Sadly they didn't carry over the VR support to X4 which was overall a better game.
Can you imagine x4 with VR it would be industry changing

@@ImmersedRobot No but its Unreal Engine 4 and should work with Praydog's upcoming VR mod.
Oh and apparently it is also made by a single dev.

I was trying to work that out as I thought it was possible. That sounds like a good idea, and I’ll give it a try. I must admit, I quite like sitting on my sofa and just playing with the Touch controllers too though!

How you set up the quest controllers would be of great interest to me
They just worked natively when I tried the game in VR. There was no special setup process.

@@vomithaus1 Yes, I was playing with a Quest 2 as well via Air Link. It just detects the controllers automatically.
I am using virtual desktop. Once they worked for me... but I can't get it to happen again. Messed around with steam vr mapping too. I just have up and went with the game pad.

Your theme music was kind of skipping
Might have been where I made a few edits. On the menu system part there were a couple of cuts, and then another one when I was targeting the ship towards the end of the video. Other than that, I’m not sure why it would be skipping?
Rebirth was the worst of the franchise. I spent a couple of hours on the pc. But I just got the vr edition. To try out pc link on my pc
