Good info and cracked me up the whole way through xD

Great video. What usually gives more pressure loss, a conical strainer or a basket strainer?

Thanks Lewis, Y - Strainer is the lower pressure drop.

So many factors of the installation come into play when figuring pressure loss. Both cone, and baskets are offered in different open area ratios. Commonly 100%, 150%, 200%, and 300% open areas. This will determine the design length of the temporary strainers. They Both have very similar if not the same Cv valves for the respective sizes also. So one will not really give you more of a pressure loss than another. The real differences between the two is the length.
Example; A 200% OAR cone strainer (witches hat), will be much longer than the basket type (pilgrim’s hat) at 200% OAR. This can be a space saver in the long run.
      10in 300% O.A.R. Cone strainer (witches hat) = 41 inches long
      10in 300% O.A.R. Basket strainer (Pilgrim’s hat)= 26 inches long
      Hope this helps!

@@ivuniversity4930 Interesting, thank you! OAR is a useful keyword.
But from my understanding basket strainers have the filtration element perpendicular to the flow, and come as a large stand-alone unit shaped like a T. Therefore making the "pilgrim's hat" longer doesn't really make much difference; you're extending the strainer into a region of no flow? Whereas a temporary cone strainer is in-line with the flow and hence making it longer does have the improvement in pressure drop?
Or are you comparing two temporary in-line strainers, a cone (witches hat) and a cone with a flat end (pilgrim's hat?). Because currently I am trying to find a small strainer with low pressure-drop and hence wondering whether I should be looking towards a temporary in-line strainer or something like a Y strainer.

@@ivuniversity4930 why you call them temporary strainers?
