  • Today on this episode of Boiling Point, Ritchie talks with Gerald Blain about the different types of Steam Traps for your steam system. Steam Traps are vital to your steam system has they pull the condensate out of the steam pipes. Condensate can cause many problems such as water hammer, energy wasted and other problems. I work on big laundry steam irons at my work. and I can tell tell you those thermodynamic steam traps aren't cheap even though your video says they are. We have 16 of them with everyone having a different size orifice. They run over 200$ brand new each.

The guy knows so much about AC that he let his condenser coil get plugged with dirt and buried the unit in mulch. Haha. I hope he does the install himself . it will just cost him more money. Great video.

I used to work in a hospital. All along the main steam line there would be a chitter chatter tapping noise, it sounded like morse code but not beeps. A guy I worked with said it was the traps on the drip legs. It seems like the only plausible explanation, the valve opening and shutting. However, if there are hundreds of taps/chatters a minute, the valve flickering open and shut like that, does that not suggest something’s wrong with the valve? Or is it normal for a trap to chatter like this? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I tried google but can only find pages discussing using electronic listening devices to hear through the static whether or not a traps functioning correctly

Most likely the problem (based on your description) is called steam condensation induced water hammer where a trap is leaking steam into the condensate header. The clicking is the valves leaking. So to answer your question, no this would not be normal and it would require a service call to better understand and then fix the problem. Hopefully that answers your question! Thanks for watching.

Is there an easy solution to long distance condensate return that has to go back up and over a building? Our boilers were moved further away from where equipment that has steam traps are and we dont get return anymore.

ACTUALLY, THERE ARE ONLY THREE TYPES OF TRAPS, THERMODYNAMICS, THERMOSTATICS AND MECHANICAL. THE BUCKET TRAPS FALLS INTO THE MECHANICAL TRAPS SAME AS FLOATS TRAPS.
