TED & TEDx Explained

  • Опубліковано 27 бер 2012
  • TEDx is an international community that organizes TED-style events anywhere and everywhere -- celebrating locally-driven ideas and elevating them to a global stage. TEDx events are produced independently of TED conferences, each event curates speakers on their own, but based on TED's format and rules.
Watch the talks at tedxtalks.ted.com or find an event in your area at ted.com/tedx.

anyone can share an idea without being a complete expert, or having any credentials. The purpose of giving speeches are to inform or to pursuade. and as an "audience" we have control over what we believe and what we choose not to believe

I've learned that TED talks share ideas for free, full stop. TEDx talks share ideas for free but with the presenter profiting/benefiting from their idea if it's embraced. I always ask myself "is this person trying to sell me something?" when going into TEDx talks, and keep that in mind while I listen.

+Unique and Hilarious Username Well TED X is the one that's free from politics. TED is the one for self important, self aggrandizing, my shit don't stink, types who want to tell everyone else how to live. And yes, the regular TED has a sufficient quantity of BS.
But every once in a while... when you least expect it, someone will walk up and have a very informative "I figured out how to make a desalinization box out of avocado pits and sea sponges that's providing drinking water for hundreds" kind of talk, and you think "Where do I contribute?" Not often though.

Basically the difference is that Ted speakers are industry experts who know what they are talking about and whose opinion and information you can value. In stark contrast, TedX talks are seemingly given by anyone who wants to give a talk and are not quality controlled or necessarily given by people who are even respected in their own field, let alone experts. Thus, while you can generally place a large degree of faith in what the Ted speakers have to say, you should take TedX speakers with large grain of salt and look into what they are saying before making up your own mind.
The idea that TedX talks are always relevant to the local community has been, in my experience of about 10 of them, simply not true. They are often given by folks who want to push their own image, opinion, and/or agenda, for selfish motives. While all TedX speakers are not like this, you would be well advised to judge their talks critically and decide for yourself.

well, ted proper can be pretty iffy in the way they present issues... very Reagan-esque. "simple answers to complex issues" ... that being said, TEDx can easily use that trusted TED brand to further personal financial or political goals. I think it's a bad move on their part.

+Zakary Torres Well if you've lost faith in academia like I have you need to go beyond. Anyone drawing a government paycheck is automatically biased and anybody credentialed had better not tick off those who provide the accreditations right? So I feel better wading through a lot of stuff before a few ring the bell of truth, repeatedly, and I find they usually lack 'credentials' but they are sober and reliable and 'real'.

Saying something is free from corporate, political, and religious bias is a lofty claim. I mean it's definitely nice to shoot for that sort of thing, but it seems a tad presumptuous to flatly state this is accomplished. In fact, isn't there a popular TED talk about how we cannot divorce ourselves from our own personal lenses i.e. personal biases?

Ok, but why and what would be the benefit of doing a TED/TEDx talk?
For example I have a idea. It's my plan that I have finally developed for a project that absolutely WILL deal with a vast amount and perhaps the majority of the climate change, environmental and carbon footprint concerns as well as help with a lot of the racial, "equity" and equality issues along with create and enact many good paying jobs and and productive revenue for individuals and companies and all in one project!
Yes! I figured it out! Also yes, it would be approved! One project to essentially help solve the so much of the world's climate worries that everyone or most people have been so focused on for so long!
Save The World and not just for "future generations" or "our children and children's children"! For those of us here now!
I would love to help the world and get this done so the current generations can take advantage of it and stop the impact of what's coming and we can all live in a better world now, but I'm not just going to throw my idea out there!
I really put my time and effort into this! I'm not in the best shape financially and I have a dream too!
I would just get it started and do it on my own if I had the resources! Although I unfortunately don't come from the most wealthy background and area too say the least.
Still I'm not lacking in intelligence and drive!
I need the help and partnership of someone who has the means and insight to make it happen!
Or to put my idea in the hands of someone who can and will make it happen! Someone who can and will fully take advantage of the vast resources and finances allocated and set aside for exactly this kind of project and effort!
Now, with this in mind. Why and what would be the benefit of someone like myself attempting to do a TED/TEDx talk? Now or after I have made my project a reality? Or at least someone who knows the situation and is more capable of doing a TED/TEDx talk?
Thank you for any advice or insights.

  • @aaronspublicspeakingstudio3212

A bit sad that it's the original intention of tedx to be free from the said stuffs, yet there are some countries that abuse it due to relations and internal politics. After coaching a number of TEDx and seeing some other TEDx as an audience, there are big differences. I still support TED but I hope TED can step in somehow to keep the fairness and integrity of the system.

Technology, Entertainment and Design. There. I said it. It took me half an hour to pry out this secret from that hard nut of truth, for this hard nut of truth is what determines my reality or my unreality. If this hard nut of truth yields, my unreality will blossom in fuschia and gold, slowly spreading to enlighten the earth with a profound insincerity that benefits only me. If this hard not of truth does not yeild, it will be run over by a 4 x 4 and eaten by a squirrel.

not really everyone who is a TED or TEDx organiser knows this fact. The ideas vary from everything like everyday work life balance and trees that talk to science that will change your world in years to come whether you agree with that statement or not. the x just means independently organised. It empowers people all over the world to start a non-profit or a for-profit TED, they even have TEDx at corporations but those talks you will never see unless you join and become one of us I guess. TED doesn't judge people and you don't have to agree with everything they say some talk even contradict. its about ideas at the end of the day not people good at yabbering or talking on a stage. The best ideas usually come from people you don't expect to be on the TED or TEDx stage and that is what is really worth spreading. Go to one first before you make up your mind unless you are not open minded then don't go :)

There will be a TEDX Talk in México soon, The only problem I see is that in México all this stuff is made by the elite society and this kind of events are like elitist, so not everyone can get access to them, even good thinkers (the organizers do have some agendas, even if they are relationship agendas) :/
Mexicans are kind of far to the free thiking society, we tend to always want a benefit even if it means limiting the poorer part of population, wish is like 70% of México's population x|

hasn't everything? you can say that about everything on social media and every platform there is or you can choose to be positive and see how others think who might not agree with anything you say. TED and TEDx-ers do it all the time.

And Dan Marsh who randomly selected and murdered an elderly couple while they were sleeping in bed, disemboweled them, put a mobile phone inside her gutted abdomen and a drinking glass inside of his. He also tortured and murdered small animals. TEDx sounds like it has unusual standards. Actually, it sounds like a whole lot of BS.

Ok, now this 56 yr old (not old enough to be a boomer, not young enough to be cool) knows (kind of) what a TED talk is, but what do the initials T-E-D stand for?

If you really cared you would make the effort *on your own* to get that answer. It's appeared in the video and a couple times in the comments. Grow up!

I feel very very uncomfortable about any organization that does not even reveal what its initials stand for. It's incredibly frustrating to watch this and not know WHAT TED IS. It sounds like something out of 1984, Newspeak or whatever. Not to mention very guru-oriented. TED WHO???? TED WHAT????? I can't find the answer anywhere and it creeps me out. TED, TEDx - jargon, jargon, hidden agendas perhaps like (gasp) Landmark?!!
