Backup Plan: Astronauts stay in space, so they don't die in re-entry. Better send up more peanut butter and jelly and include extra O2 for the space craft guests. Staying till next year is a stretch.

You mean you expected it to blow up or something if it wasn't 'safe'? Several thrusters were not working and helium was leaking. Meaning re-entry could not be controlled. No, it absolutely wasn't safe.
