Very helpful information man. I keep going back and forth between .22 and .25 for what I want next in a new airgun. I know generally the shot count per fill is going to be more with a smaller caliber but the .25 hits so hard.
Good video. Given the same muzzle velocity the larger calibe will always come up on top. As for small game hunting penetration is not so much the factor but the ability of the pellet to dump its energy into the target and the surrounding tissue. The .25 again will win due to its larger impact area, if it is fired at the same muzzle velocity as the samller caliber.
lensman57 correct, you really don't want pellets to over penetrate, on soft animals, you want all that energy to get transferred. A bigger caliber with more energy really only gives you more range.
What's going on brotha. I live in orange county and am looking to get into airgun hunting. Do you have any recommendations of good places to hunt small game?
It's always funny to me when I see people comparing both calibers because I'm a 25 caliber type of guy and when I see the comparisons the 25 just has so much knockdown power it's hard for me to go back to a 22
All calibers have there specific use. I've got a .22 crosman 1322 pump pistol, a 1250fps .177 GAMO whisper, and will be getting my .25 now. You just encourage me :).
What about killing range? Are both cals good for the same distance ? What's the furthest you can shoot each cal accurately and which is more deadly further ???
That wood test would have been different with solid board wood, especially softer stuff like pine. Even if layered plyboard is thin, those layers are very hard to penetrate because each layer spreads the energy from scratch. That's why they use layering in vests. Also the glue they use to press it together can be quite hard.
The advantage of the 22 is there is way more projectile choices and much cheaper ammo. Also the FPE is not that much more in 25cal. I get 47fpe with a 30gr Piledriver with my Hatsan Flashpup in 22 and 54FPE with Bullboss with Seneca 35.8gr in 25. Not that big of a difference. To be fair I have not shot slugs from my 25 yet and they don't make Piledriver's in 25cal or 35cal yet. Wish they did. Lastly I think the results shown on this video would have been different if the pellet weight would have been been the same.
.22 and .25 is not that much different in caliber. The difference then is the grain/weight. A .25 caliber WILL hold much more weight and the FPE will be much more than the .22.
Cool video. Both those rifles are fantastic but I guarantee you are not getting 915 fps with the Air Arms and 18 grain pellets........ unless you've made some modifications to it. You can realistically expect between 850 and 890 fps, on the highest power setting. I liked your tests! Which do you find is more accurate?
Where in California are you located? I'm in San Diego & have no "shooting buddies" to share in the joy of airgun hunting on the 5 permissioned properties at which I hunt. (Gerry: FX Royale 500, BT65, .25 AT44 .22 & Marauder .22)
If I had a good .30 cal pcp I would’ve definitely compared them. The clear winner would be the .30 in terms of power but in cost of shooting I’d give it to the .25. But in all honesty the .25 wins in being an all around caliber since you can pretty much take all small game with it and some medium game at respected distances.
the larger caliber will not expand as much caused bij lesser speed ,but there is no need to , and you got the bigger mass that wil give penetration and there`s a more certain result.and more downrange energie with the same muzzle energie at start
Congrats on your Wildcat. They are a GREAT shooting airgun. The Smooth Twist barrel is certainly in a league of their own. Been using the Predator GTOs with surprisingly good results out to 100yds 👍🏽
D'artagnan V8der thanks! I'm still testing out different pellets on my wildcat and surprised how well it shoots a large variety of them. I'll definitely give the gto's a try
The wildcat truly exceeded my expectations, I am harvesting rabbits up to 150yards, definitely not the same air gun I had as a kid!!! Love your videos man, keep um coming
American Hawk there a few places up here. The closest I can recommend are lake Sonoma wildlife area, Knoxville and cedar rough wildlife area, and Indian valley reservoirs wildlife area. Check them out on line. I’m pretty sure there’s a few more. You can also hunt in BLM area but you’ll need a special map to to help you find those locations.
thanks a lot its kind from you to help me . Do you call them or just sit or move, what is the best place to look them ? under treas ? we have nut treas just like those near wildlife area near me.Again thanks for your help.
American Hawk I’ll be honest with you, going into wildlife areas it’s a gamble. So many people have gone and still go that the animals within that area are very weary and cautious. They’re there, you just gotta be very very patient to find one or come across them. Best methods for squirrels is to sit in one place and wait for them to come, pace yourself because they’ll see and hear you before you see them. Rabbits are easier, if they spot they’ll most likely freeze thinking you can’t see them, so it’s up to you to have a good pair of eyes and ears. They like to be in thick brush so look for them there.
AirgunnerCA I love this kind of testing. Most people don't appreciate the amount of work and time it takes to make even a simple video. Nice choice in guns!! I have a Streamline 22 that I like so much I just ordered one in 25.
Bob O thanks! I do the best that I can when I have spare time to get everything right. That’s cool bro if I were you I’d do a comparison test on them, I’m sure ppl would wanna see that 👍
Fun video but not really realistic is it? Of course if you move two projectiles of different mass at the same speed the heavier object is going to deliver significantly more impact! Not a real fair comparison. Most manufacturers that make a .22 and .25 of the same rifle will provide about 100 fps less velocity in there .25 version. Therefore, a realistic decision for us consumers is, for example, do I buy the Hatsan AT44 in .22 (970 fps) or in .25 (870 fps)? I believe I know the answer is still buy the .25 but I would love to see a comparison like you did to settle this question!
Riccardo Rasberry you’re 100% right, but that’s why I mention the sweet spot for air rifle pellets. Regardless of caliber, 950fps is the highest you wanna sling pellets at because after that they’ll start to do crazy and wild things, it’s just a design flaw of the pellet shape. I’d say 95% of manufacturers tune their rifles in between 880-915fps because of that. So it’s obvious a heavier, bigger pellet at the same velocity will outperform the smaller one, I just wanted to show what you would expect. My next test for-sure will be .22 30ft/lb vs .30 30ft/lb. I just need a new chronograph since I broke my last one.... will definitely be an interesting test.
@@edgarlombera7066 The crazy things you you're talking about is the sub sonic and hyper sonic velocities. You need the projectile to be heavier to keep that bastard steady once you go over 1000fps. Once light gust of wind or change in air density deflects the .177 pretty bad so you've got to move to the 9 grains+ The 5 grains will go right through sheet metal though. As always, what are you shooting at and at what distance. I'm going to be getting a .25 at around 1000 fps, but a .22 should be kept at 950-1000.
Great video, here in the uk there doesn't seem to be any videos on the .25 i'm thinking about getting one soon.. on a foot note you should have shot that fly lol.
In England they would both be very fac and from what I've seen heard and read in plus 12 ftlb the .25 is king seriously tho if your into airguns Google the 12g slug fireing PCP rifles they are amazing the guy shooting it had a huge refill tank next to him I think it only generates 3 shots per fill but they wack foster slugs out at around 800fps
Shared in Northeast Ohio airguns talk and exchange. I still have yet to afford pcps but working on it. .25 is my favorite. .30s great but limited in availability and pricing unfortunately.
Paul H only reason I'd get a .30 is if I was hunting coyote size game. But that's about it. I love airguns but I'll only really use them for small game. Personally if I was going for coyote or pigs I'd use a firearm.
I haven't done it yet, but for larger game I would consider using something like an Airforce Texan in .45cal. with 300gr and heavier slugs. Enjoyed the video with slo-mo and all. Always knew that .25 was more effective.
