    I'm not sure how many of your viewers watch American Football, but the concept in these set pieces is very similar in concept to what is run in an American Football passing play. You have a receiver (Gabriel) on a "hot route" who is the passer's (Rice) optimal target, and he times his route to meet the pass. The job of the other players is to create space in the defense so the pass can be delivered to the open hot route receiver. That is basically what Arsenal are doing here, only translated to the pitch.

    Thanks for the overexplanation! One extra thing that could be added to make it an overoverexplanation was Arsenal's method for stopping the goalkeeper from getting to the ball. I haven't watched all their corners this year, but with White injured and the attention he was starting to get last year for standing beside the goalkeeper and obstructing him, I think that their strategy has evolved this year to have one of the rushing players to occupy the space between the goalie and the ball - so I think that most of the time it isn't obstruction, when they do it properly anyway

      Same i havent watched all corners. But it is an interesting question as to how to see this in terms of intent and result. What you mentioned is that if arsenal players do it right, it technically cannot be counted as obstruction. But is it their intention to cause an obstruction? For me, this goes against the spirit of the law even if they are going by the letter of the law. What eventually results are two things if it is decided that this is against the spirit of the game: 1) either they change the rule to be clearer or 2) referees will start looking at tactical intents behind corner plays (which they possibly already do for some cases)
      And lastly, for me, corner kicks are pretty boring. I wouldnt want to see most games decided by corners. Football has always emphasised excitement derived from freeflowing play.

    • @RadicalPrion
      @RadicalPrion Місяць тому +8

      @@johncarveti8375 I'm no rules expert, but to me this is easily in the middle of the grey area where it would be too difficult to clarify the rules or rely on referees to judge intent. There is a lot more egregious stuff happening in the box (again, as long as their runs are done properly), but maybe I'm just biased as an Arsenal fan? I love freeflowing play too, but corner kicks have never seemed boring to me, and it's not like Arsenal are conceding any of their freeflowing play in their efforts to gain an edge from set pieces. I don't like it when the strategy becomes to disrupt the flow of play to minimize open play while maximizing set pieces, which I don't feel Arsenal does at all. And I also don't see this as leading to games decided by corners; I think it's just a great example of how narrow margins can be utilized. Arsenal is targeting an optimization of the margins offered by set pieces, beginning with team building and skill / trait selection, and then incorporating that into their tactics. Arteta's philosophy of "domination" applies not only to open play but to all aspects, including tilting the "differential in set piece advantage", which contributes to maximizing xG differential.

    • @mavsworld1733
      @mavsworld1733 Місяць тому +18

      @@johncarveti8375I think you are looking at it too directly. Part of the reason Arsenal have become set piece FC is because we face so many low blocks, and are given so many corners. So this is essentially a counter to a counter. Other teams counter technical superiority by giving away corners (corners generally have a low conversion rate) as it's safer than open play. Arsenal scoring lots of corners means low block teams now have to come up with a new plan to stop the interesting free flowing football, so this could actually result in less corners and more free flowing football.

    From that clip, there is a high certainty that aresenal’s corner tactic is to prevent the goalkeeper from getting to the ball at the far post with the screen of players. Shouldn’t it be called as a foul as attacking players should not be impeding the gk? The spirit of the law is that goalkeepers should have control over their area. And while attacking players have a right to stand their ground as well to challenge for the ball, a coordinated attempt by the team to screen the goalkeeper is definitely against the letter and the spirit of the law.

      I don't see which letter of the rules standing near a goalkeeper breaks. As far as the rules are concerned, goalkeepers are ultimately no different when it comes to being fouled, and there is nothing that says they "control the box".
      Decades ago, goalkeepers used to basically get beaten up, so referees started to protect them more (although the rules never actually changed). But standing near them isn't dangerous. Plus, the defenders get in the way just as much as the attackers.
      If you look at the teams where Arsenal have had the most success, they've had goalkeepers who are weak in the air (Tottenham, Man United). The better goalkeepers just come and punch it.
      This wouldn't work well against Petr Cech; the move to ball playing goalkeepers has led to the average keeper being less good at dealing with crosses, and this is simply a smart way of exploiting it.

    Arsenal's routine: flood a zone, barge/foul every defender in it, rely on VAR to be asleep at the wheel. The delivery is great, the referees and/or the football laws are not.
    As Adam said, the defenders can't turn around or look at both at the same time, but he didn't mentioned is they'll very likely get a pen given against if they do focus solely on the man. So the Arsenal boys just form a 5 man battering ram of players who aren't even trying to head the ball but instead just grabbing and barging everyone from behind to clear them out allowing the 6th man to nod it in unopposed. It's a massive rule/ref interpretation loophole that no-one seems to be calling out.
    Again, the delivery and execution is great. I just don't think it's fair contest because it goes against both the letter and the spirit of the rules, but for some reason the refs don't seem to care.

      What is also concerning is that this encourages even more rough play within the penalty box. Corner kicks seem like a relic of the past, if we are going along the trajectory of how fifa likes to see the game as: freeflowing entertainment.

    • @GardinerAlan
      @GardinerAlan Місяць тому +5

      @@christmascritters3691 Arsenal used to get bullied on 'normal' set pieces, so I totally get changing the profile of their player to be bigger and stronger. But this problem with this method is that its effectively unstoppable because the refs aren't calling the fouls. Even the biggest and strongest defenders can't do much when someone surprise barges them in the back. Arsenal aren't outmuscling other teams, they're fouling them.

    Monaco's tactic is very clever. It's high-risk but effective. By threatening Arsenal with a quick counter, they reduced the number of players in the box, thus reducing the chaos. But the risk is high if your remaining defenders aren't good at marking players one-on-one.

    • @simonkennedy2465
      @simonkennedy2465 Місяць тому

      surely be forced to have more of your small quick defenders having to look after these half-way line guys ends up INCREASING your relative height advantage in the 6 yard box, gving you fewer ball attackers, but more relative advantage over the team defending the corner?

    • @bighamster2
      @bighamster2 Місяць тому

      The thing is, broadly speaking, fewer defenders and attackers in the box is better for the attacking team. That's why teams usually put all 11 in the box nowadays.
      So whilst it *might* help counter this particular tactic, it makes you more vulnerable to a more traditional corner routine. If it continues, I wouldn't be surprised if Arsenal add another corner tactic, because if someone has to man-mark Gabriel with fewer zonal markers, they're still going to lose out most of the time.

    • @teeone1066
      @teeone1066 Місяць тому

      Standing your ground is not a foul. Joelinton wasn’t penalised for a two handed push in the back on Gabriel last year, the manager was charged for speaking on it, and an ‘independent’ panel justified it. We didn’t set this threshold, but we’ve had to adapt to it.

    Arsenal would have 3 points without set pieces this season. All they gotta do to defend that is do what they do in rugby and lift the gk up to catch the ball or they could use their teammates shoulder to jump higher or better yet…get a running start from inside the goal but no one thinks of this even though they make millions of dollars, that’s insane.
