Excess deaths are elevated in all age groups since the CoV2-related deaths have lessened. Vaccinations save lives. Truth. CoV2 vaccinations saved lives. Could they also have caused physiogical weaknesses that are contributing to excess deaths?
I was CMV negative until my children were well into elementary school. The blood center loved my blood for sick neonates. They told me when I turned CMV positive. I never felt sick at all during that period.
Absolutely fascinating! I now want to research CMV - before today I had no idea how well evolved this virus is and need to know more. Thankyou TWiV, and especially to Felicia for such great explanations & delicious enthusiasm. Fabulous way to start the year, you've set the bar really high, fingers crossed you can maintain this level of excellence in podcasting throughout
You may want to look at HHV5 (CMV) relative HHV4(Epstein Barr Virus EBV) as well. Some references Kalil, Andre C., and Diana F. Florescu. Another stunningly interesting episode! I could have listened to Felicia for another hour and more - I love TWiV's with guests that work on different viruses, like episode about feline coronaviruses, this one, and others. Having studied Virology Live lectures, such episodes brilliantly add to, and allow us to expand our knowledge on specific viruses. I feel incredibly privileged to be able to listen to and learn from scientists doing this astounding work. Total respect to Vincent and colleagues for making this possible 👏
1:22:00 To add to the answer to Barry's question, some of the many pathogens that have been suspected of being involved with the progression of MS include herpes 1, 2, 6, herpes zoster (shingles), chlamydia pneumoniae, Blastocystis, Shigella, Nocardia, and various flukes. It would be interesting to see how many cases respond to antivirals like he suggested.
On molecular biology being mechanical: As a mechanical engineer, that is exactly how I experience this stuff. Look at the motor of a flagella, for exaple. Yes, the statistical, wiggly aspect goes into it as well, but all the linking up of fitting shapes and pairing up the right posiitions of H-atoms in vanderWaal bridges has VERY mechanical aspects.
it's mechanical, mostly. Mechanical means we can see it as parts getting together - like the planets and the Sun ... Newtonian Mechanics. If there are quantum effects then it's more complicated. Remember that when you put a wrench to your flat tire wheel there atoms in the wrench interacting with atoms in the screw. Look into MEMS and you'll be amazed how your airbag sensors and cell phone microphones work.
On the graviton: It is a hypothesized particle communicating gravitational force. (In the same way photons communicate electromagnetic force.) As we have failed to quantize gravity up to now, it is not something we have found.
So sad... Watching your great discussion whole chatting with my daughter about her conspiracy theorist husband! You are so right about everything you say about them.
Great episode to open 2023, congratulations !! Very instructive information about CMV and a delicious conversation about perils in virology and science.
Not sure if it was in this video (which I'm still watching but had to pause for a while) or on the Daniel update, but it was mentioned that China had very low vaccine coverage? What is that based on? By ourworldindata China is 89.35% fully vaccinated, way above anyone else, and 57.21/100 vaccine boosters, on par with UK and way above US. What's the reason for this massive discrepancy? Just read in my local news that China reports 60,000 dead from Covid this last month. That's about 2000 per day, which is still way below US during the Jan 21 peak (0% vaccinated) and also the Jan 22 peak (65% fully vaccinated). Roughly 3500 daily dead during Jan 21 peak and roughly 3000 dead. That's before accounting for the massive population difference. Although, China doing Covid deaths their own way - only Covid pneumonia is counted - suggests their numbers are grossly under-reported.
Wild thought, if a cell is CMV infected in this dynamic equilibrium of latency and activity can that cell become infected with another virus? Other than the specific problems mentioned it appears that there’s more of a symbiotic relationship rather than the normal virus/host relationship.
Drive my Car was made into a lengthy film and released in 2022. It was in limited theaters for a short run which my film loving son made it to, however I wasn’t able to go with him. He has already read other Murakami, maybe I’ll pick that one up for him (and I can borrow!) since he enjoyed the film very much.
Wasn’t Robert E. Lee actually superintendent at West Point? If so, it makes no sense to attempt to erase his record at West Point but it does make sense to be reminded and appropriately learn. Suppose Salk or Sabin or … come from a slave owning family, should we erase their record in vaccine development?
Wow. Another high-level TWiV. Plenty of -- delicious -- science to consider. 49:54 -- segue discussion to "Virology in Peril" is what many of of us have been thinking about, a timely and articulate summary. Read that Editorial. (TWiV is so fine, watching about this one about CMV we learn of HPV tethering, as fascinating story about a very different virus.)

If you offered the upcoming LIVE from NY - TWIV! I would definitely consider paying/donating to attend a livestream of it! Just thought id share.

I had many oncology patients with CMV. Some just were CMV + but no clinical disease, others were not so lucky
😞
That's interesting. I assume you must see hpv? What others do you see? Simian virus 40?

Not red blood cells.
The lead interviewer comes across a bit condescending sometimes.
felicia was great , please do have her again .
Re letters & virus species concept, see TWiV 357 -- Mistletoe on the Tree of Life with Jens Kuhn. Another one to add to my list of TWiV catchup.
Thanks a lot for this delicious video, it tasted fantastic !
HHV6 binds to host DNA in some people.
How did you guys not call this episode "Delicious!"
The movie made from Drive My Car is very good.
This episode was truly delicious... I have been in the world of transfuaion science for 30 years
Awesome name!
Why fever reactivate herpes viruses ?
May be fever enhance cell mytosis?
You’re the only good thing about Jan 6
Lol, Jan 6 is desperately overblown
