Al you need a pole barn for all the attachments for the tractors and shelter for your Bobcat mini excavator, to keep them out the weather. Would make things easier for you over the winter. As you get more equipment for your farm, it is going to become more necessary.
I used to be envious of all your rainfall, as I live in Roswell, NM. We're in the high desert. We had only had 5" of rain this year (which was actually pretty decent). This past Saturday, we had a 123yr flood. We got between 6.5" to 10.5" of rain in 4 hours (depending on what part of Roswell you were in). We lost 2 lives and first responders had to rescue 308 people from roofs, attics, washed away cars, and trees. Pets were having to be rescued from the raging water. It washed away homes, destroyed our museum, a dealership full of cars. Our streets had 5ft of water rushing by. It will take years to recover. I still can't believe this has happened. I felt like we got a taste of what NC got during Hurricane Helene.

Reverend Billy Graham's home was in Black Mountain which was really hit hard. His son and family started Samaritans Purse and it's headquarter in the NC mountain town of Blowing Rock. They have the least overhead of any charity we give to. First to respond in many areas and they are still the one that people continue to see taking action. Thank you for thinking of them and us in this time of need. We will be headed back to the mountains this weekend. We got our first frost likely on the same day as you (Oct 15th). As a crow flies we're probably only about 50 miles or so from you so makes sense. Hope you guys have a blessed and wonderful day!

Gina I planted the exta hardy German garlic plus five more.
Those zinnia seed would be a fun activity for Olivia and you to do. Those seeds will grow even better next year. Just cut off the flower tops and lay them somewhere to dry more for to weeks .
After watching the water & mud slides in the South & pray your run off will be sufficient! You always do good work!

Your successes and failures at the secret garden sound pretty much like what I can and cannot grow here in SE Alaska. The difference is I always put my tomatoes in my small hothouse next to my back porch next to my kitchen. I would never trust our cool, wet climate to produce tomatoes. However, I did really well this year with my crop.. The best part was the tomato plants that I started from the seeds of some tomato-on-the-vine from the grocery store did so well, that I was able to trade over half of the plants for some venison. Gardeners learn to just plant then go with the flow. There is no controlling the weather so we grow what grows and don't worry about what doesn't. At Thanksgiving, my prayer of thanks is always for neighbors and grocery stores, because I could never survive on what I can grow alone.
The flowers that I love to grow that give me joy all winter (I put them in the hothouse before the first frost) are Snapdragons. Beautiful flowers and lovely smell. I can look out my dining area window right into the hothouse (which is against the house) and enjoy them all winter. Another flower I keep in there during the winter are my geraniums. Some of these I have had for five years or longer now. They bloom most of the winter in that room. When you live in the North with long winters, this is a real big plus. I also keep my Mediterranean herbs (oregano, thyme, parsley, rosemary, sage) in there. I had one rosemary that was 5 years old before the aphids got it one year before I realized they were on it. Now I am a bit more attentive to that possibility.

No frost in Tucson yet. It was high 50’s last week but back in the 90’s this week. It does snow here though (every other year) and it’s melted by 3:00 the next day.

No frost here in middle TN, in fact we’re having a very warm, dry spell. Mid 70’s to 80 & mid 40’s to 50’s overnight. Getting lots of projects done!
The first cold morning is when we northerners find out our batteries aren't up to the job any more. If you jump it all winter it will likely be fine for one more spring and summer. Small issue with land contouring, barn build is still fine!

I was stateside for 3 months but I am now back in Albania. I live in the southern part of the country and it never freezes. Northern Albania certainly has colder weather than where I live.

Morning everyone! Our gardens did great this year. I planted 12 Roma
tomato plants and we have enough for tomatoes sauce for the winter, two types of potatoes - did really good, onions, carrots, beets, - all did very well. The cucumbers not so much - I ordered English and I didn't know what came up. The beefsteak tomatoes almost took over our gardens and the squash started running out into the yard and couldn't cut the grass!! Flower gardens did fantastic. Hope everyone has a great day!!

Planted what I thought were one kind of seed I saved and got a wonderful hybrid of two different ones from two years ago. Ended up with a tasty 25-30 pound squash that taste like an acorn squash. Was a cross of N. Carolina Candy Roaster and N. Georgia Candy Roaster.

Still no frost here in central Pa. This weekend is calling for lows around 30 so we'll see I guess. Areas around us though have had frost.
Idea for you. Instead of allowing all the water from up above to run into your ditch, dig a small trench diagonally across the bank above, running towards your cow pasture, then do one of your "signature" rock walls, back fill it some, so that at least half of the runoff doesn't make it to your deep ditch. It would look good (much like the old timers did) and Ms Gina, well, she does love her rock walls!

That's a bummer about that track coming off the mini x again. 😞 I'm glad you decided to go with Samaritan's Purse (Boone, NC) for your coffee proceeds donations. 🙂 They do incredible disaster relief worldwide and are a very reputable organization. I do have a question regarding future projects. Will you be assembling the walk-in cooler in the near future before you harvest your pig(s)? Also, maybe another smallish project could be to build a tractor Implements Shed? I don't know if something like that is even necessary, but it's a thought. Are you going to be installing ice/snow breaks on the barn and addition roofs or installing gutters to divert the water into the ditch so it doesn't eat away at the front edge of the concrete pad? Anyhow, I love you both and anxiously await every video y'all create as I learn so much. Brutus is getting so big! Gotta love him.

It would be extra work but maybe more permanent to line the ditch bank w/your flat rocks to control erosion. It would be good protection for the barn extension.

Al, you have property that is riddled with large rocks. Instead of playing in the mud every year, use those rocks to support that banking and prevent the dirt from washing down to the gravel. You've seeded that bank three years in a row now!
Actually the best rock free dirt availability' is what washes into that stream-bed, I'd be collecting and shifting to make a stockpile for filling holes !

Al, have you considered parking the tractors in particular in the workshop over the winters for super easy startups, normal cold start oils, etc. Sub-Zero start ups are tough on ALL equip., gas or diesel...you've got a large garage, the mowers, tractors, splitters, excavator(?), etc...🇺🇸 🇺🇲
