No one works magic anymore because the owners and designers of those brands are no longer the artists that made the brand. The essence underlying today's trends are dictated by social media interests rather than inspirations from the designer's reflections of life itself.

I was going to disagree, because there are many examples of artistic directors improving upon already-established brands. And then I reread your comment, and you’re right.
These newer directors seem very aware of marketing and branding, but it feels so hollow and corporate. Fashion is art and it’s supposed to send a message. I can still find art in couture, but I remember when ready-to-wear was exciting. Fast fashion (capitalism) and social media (also capitalism) really destroy innovation and art for the sake of art.

That's a weird comment to make considering Karl lagerfeld himself said Gabrielle chanel would've hated what he did with her brand. And yet he did complete magic with it. Chanel was sinking before karl took over

well why would they buy the stuff they dislike? on top of how tons of people with money will buy a lot of ugly stuff just because they can and the brands are status symbol 🤷‍♀️

It matters what the public thinks tho. Many people with money do buy things that are highly sought after to establish their wealth, so If people love a brand, it increases the desire and prestige attached to the brand.

@@diangelosOne thing is the right of buyers to buy or not and a very different one to imply that those buyers we're talking about here, didn't do it because the collections are "ugly stuff". So what is talented standing for?

    • @hafidhb
      @hafidhb 3 місяці тому +80

@@bengigi7337 look, talented designer does not mean that that person is right for the position of creative director of a certain brand. Have you seen Demna of Balenciaga? He is talented. But his designs are definitely not Balenciaga, yes it has unique silhouette which's Balenciaga selling point, but have you seen how different (and not in a good way) his designs are compare to Cristobal? The same thing goes for Karl and Virginie. Both of them are talented, especially Karl, for he has been in the industry for so many years and even have been serving in Balmain before. But I can definitely say that Karl definitely does not embody Chanel. Chanel was old, stiff, and Gabrielle herself even despise pop culture and trends. Remember that Chanel was in the bring of ruin before Karl came in. And what does Karl brought to Chanel if not those two? As for Virginie, she's a mess. I can see her torn between Chanel's stiff and classic sense of fashion and Karl's sense of modernism. That's why you see her designs and styling a lotta mess. What you see in Chanel and what people loved in Chanel is not Gabrielle, but Karl. People back then despise Chanel, simply because Gabrielle was so old-fashioned, and not to mention, she's a n*zi spy.

    • @lokylong28
      @lokylong28 3 місяці тому

To be fair, Coco Chanel was more of a businesswoman herself and she'd probably not be into Karl. She was not a nice person and stole designs, she made it because she was smart in doing business. She was also a spy for Nazis just to protect her own personal interests. This person was glorified and praised when I was studying fashion but in reality she's more of a Thomas Edison instead of Nikola Tesla...

I think the issue people had with her is the styling of not only the clothes on the runway, but also what was given to the Chanel ambassadors for events. I definitely remember some recent carpets where the outfits given didn't look like they were chosen for their ambassadors but just randomly selected. I know she is talented and hope for her own line without having to stand under the Chanel brand and expectations. I do wish Chanel went back to the classic style with a modern cut. Gigi showed a current look for Chanel with vibes from the Coco expectations.

Karl Lagerfeld was infinitely more creative human ever IMO to be the one to return Chanel to its former glory. Just because she was his right hand designer doesn’t mean she had the KL touch. It’s because he made it look so easy. For him sketching designs was like walking is for most people. He also had a penchant for interior decor, jewelry, accessories and of course starched white collars, ascot tie long morning coat. He was always very stylish creator. You can see the models crying on their runway walk as it’s the first one they did after KL died. There are a few long and detailed interviews he did including sketching to show things like what he wore as a boy, his mother had a huge influence on him and he sketched her too. They really loved him.

The best fashion I have seen is all coming out of the Middle East, particularly Lebanon and the UAE. French and Italian designers are showing us nothing new and nothing designed for real women. All the sheer dresses are absurd, and will never be worn by anyone other than attention seeking celebrities.

She ruined the brand. The defects in quality yet continuous price increases spelled the death for her.
Sorry, but i’m not buying a $5000 handbag with crooked and loose stitching.
Not to mention the last video literally had a model walking with a belt that’s buckle is a Louis Vuitton lotus monogram.. Chanel is famous for Camellias. Where’s the camellia?

Thank GOD. Chanel has been looking worse and worse for some years now. Like awkward and ugly designs and combinations of pieces that look cheap and badly made even though they are EXPENSIVE. She also leans *heavily* on thr Chanel house codes (like pearls, black and white, those tweed top & bottom skirt suits) but her work usually appears badly recycled instead of, say, creatively reimagined classics. Just yikes. She migut have been Karl's right hand but if she IS a talented designer she needs to leave Chanel and prove it. When her designs are no longer Chanel pieces we will see who actually wears her clothing.

I have to agree, just browsed the flagship store in Tokyo and couldn’t find a single item to purchase, so disappointing! The classic look of Chanel was replaced by trendy less classy clothing which mimicked LV. They are unflattering and suits are boxy.

What happened to fashion being GOOD! Lately, as long as you have money, you can make a poor model strut in any abomination.
Fashion shows use to be about GOOD fashion that you could actually wear.

Remember her first Couture show for Chanel? It screamed “cheap”. She wanted to make Chanel more market style, but Chanel is supposed to be classy, old money. Btw the clothes shown in the video were all Karl’s, except for the pink one.

Ok I thought it was just me ..Chanel shows are UGLY. They have been for a while. The pairing of pieces have been mismatched for years.
The feel of some of these looks is so “off,” you wonder if they’ve intentionally launched a visual assault on their audience, or if they’ve simply gone blind, themselves.
She was right to leave. I wouldn’t continue to associate myself with those looks, either.

I think the problem was that it wasn’t exciting enough. After Karl’s passing I feel like the house needed a big moment. Her creative direction has been very much “oh, yeah… I like that” instead of WOW

I liked her for Chanel. Karl was at Chanel FOREVER so of course his imprint is huge and people hate anything different. I think she made Chanel more for the female gaze aka what makes women feel beautiful and what women want to wear. Rather than a man dressing women up for what he thinks is beautiful. She did what Phoebe Philo did at Chloe and Celine, but make it Chanel. I think she was fresh and feminine. People just don’t like change and love to be mad online. Unfortunately I can’t say that her designs are the main reason for their growing profitability. This is due to the CEO and Chanel price gouging. Chanel was luxurious but for the aspiring fashion fan, you could one day. Now the point of entry for anything is too high. Not sure how sustainable it is for the future, considering the bulk of luxury customers are middle to upper middle class earners.

Thats how brands fall when the creator dies, its common now many brands lost their spark when the mastermind behind it is gone , btw nowadays fashion became A JOKE i see some fashion designs who lterally where designs after TOILET EXACTLY THAT ! Theres no future talent theres just a continuous "shocking culture" and ride the trend , we wont see the same era of fashion as it was todays era is fast fashion era buy wear throw away repeat

The worst period for Chanel, she had no talent at all...not a single decent collection. The person/ people who chose her must be having a rough time in their career too. What a fiasco!
And all the "ambassadors"of her collections who had to sing praises about her...
But she is out now...the magic of Haute Couture magic will hopefully come back...

Sorry but it has to happen. Collections of Karl were to dream for , Virgine's one were so boring in my opinion...of course they were good pieces, but meh in general wich was rare to say at a Chanel runway during the Kaiser's time. Also in the shops, i only buy simple things (not rich but when i can...) it was colourfull, idk. Of course that's my opinion, she also recovered some public for Chanel that wasn't like forgotten for Karl: oldest consumers.

Knowing the right people will get you the job but doesn't make you keep it!
Chanel will never be able to replace Karl and she wasn't enough. Bland, boring, repetitive and simple minded!

Chanel bags are a disaster but the style is beautiful! I’m more of an Oscar, Louis Vuitton, Valentino fan, but these pieces are gorgeous! I imagine it’s incredibly challenging to constantly come up with new designs but I like the idea of updating timeless pieces.

Lagerfeld made Chanel look cheap. He was a misogynist and (despite being fat for most of his life) a vocal fatphobe. The brand came to represent his gimmicky viciousness and I'll die on that hill.

I liked her designs because she did a lot of stuff that was so 90s Chanel with all the candy colors. I think she’s getting blamed for the quality going down and the prices going up, but that’s not her fault. And it’ll probably get even worse now 😭

You didn’t do your due diligence other content creators did. She knows the most about Chanel and it’s legacy, worked for Carl for many years and Chanel’s CEO wanted to cut the quality so she quit. There’s a guy called Jacob who makes good videos on this. They also undermined her and pretended she didn’t design the last collection. She has talent and integrity this post was drinking the cool aid.

the problem is once a designer dies…their creations die with them. There is no way that even someone who was rlly close to the designer could create something that made the brand famous in the first place mostly in this Generation where the fashion trends change so quickly…where Shops like Shein, Temu and what not bring out new pieces every single day and not only 5 per day but over 1000. I want to become a fashion designer one day but I fear that it wont happen bc of fast fashion

Idk the designers for Chanel are dealing with so much history and legacy which can only be re-invented so many times. She’s probably better off working with her own brand, for her own sake, as a creative that is.

This is Leena Nair, the Indian CEO of Chanel, former Unilever of India HR, using social media with an Indian voice tweeted to sound less of an Indian accent. The goal : to cover her mess of the last three years and to discredit Virginie who has been Chanel for 4 decades.
