Great selections Rudy! Enjoyed Nevermore's Sound of Silence it was almost like a new song I knew all the lyrics to, kind of strange. The End as an instrumental was nice. I need to research Manfred Mann's Earth Band only knowing their radio songs, I liked what I heard. Any suggestions? Grace Potter has a terrific voice I'm going to have to look her up too. Thanks for expanding my musical enjoyment!!

This is always part 3 of the joy of a mixtape: first, putting it together, second, see and hear Jim like it, third, get all the mostly positive comments like yours. And you know what ? By thinking about doing this and a second cover mixtape, I all of a sudden remembered so many songs that I have material for cover mixtape nr 2,3, and 4 😆 But not right away, long live variety ... and there'll surely be some in my next cast iron requests and the next mixtape... probably next month 😄🤘

    Hi Jim and Rudi
I’m curious because I usually prefer the originals but sometimes I only know the cover version and don’t know it’s a cover.
The Hu did a Metallica cover and that one was better as the original.
Ike and Tina. I know this is a cover but this one is the better one. Great song.
Joachim Kühn. Only know the original version. Well…sorry Rudi but I prefer the original one. I’m not a piano lover that much.
Jacob K. Genesis cover. I’m a big Genesis fan. I still prefer the original one but this one is great too; very playful.
Nevermore. I like Simon and Garfunkel a lot. This is so very different but it’s done well. I’m still grinning.
Deodato. I’m a big Steely Dan fan too. They make such great albums. This sounds like the James Last version of that song and that’s not a compliment. It could have been so much more than this.
Manfred Mann. Didn’t know this was a cover. I seldom listen to Springsteen. Mwah..I’m not really impressed; cover or not.
Judas Priest. Don’t know this song at all. Sounds like a standard Priest song, no more no less.
Portnoy etc. I have the original album in my collection. I prefer the original, simply because I really love Rafferty’s voice. Not that this is a bad cover though.
Grace Potter. Never heard of him. I’m a big big Neil Young fan. He’s one of my favorite singer-songwriters. I think I have almost albums.
I’m not fond of the singer. Musically this is an interesting cover and the guitar player is great.

Hallo Will, thank you for your detailed comments - as always 👍 But comparing Deodato to James Last is some kind of insult 🤣🤣 but in a way you're right, it's not really exciting. But Deodato has lots of much better stuff. Don't say titles now, because they might show up on the channel one day😆

More than happy to listen to this. I've got 52 minutes to kill so let's do a real-time review: I&TT - a classic! Ike might just be the godfather of rock & roll and Tina was a force of nature but I didn't need the adagio bit at the beginning. Stick to the studio version: Joachim Kuhn - never heard of him but I do like some jazz piano. This should have been jazzier - yes, state the melody at the start but then go truly wild. The best ever jazz piano album is German (of sorts) of course - Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert.: Jakob K - Some reggae versions work extremely well but I'm not sure about this one. Maybe a full-on dub approach would have been good: Nevermore - I think I praised them last time they were on here and yes, this too is straight metal. I do like how they ignore much of the melody and do their own thing for most of the track. The Disturbed version, weirdly, is more faithful to the original so we didn't need another faithful metal version: Deodato - Shame on Jim for not knowing his version of Also Sprach Zarathustra but this sucks the life out of the Steely Dan classic: MM's E - This is a band who knew how to do covers though I still preferred MM's Chapter 3. The Mighty Quinn (by MM's original eponymous band) is a Bob Dylan cover, Jim! More shame on you for not knowing that: JP - Kudos to them for choosing an unlikely folky song to metalise (probably not a word) but who better than Judas Priest? : MPG - I'm not that taken with the original - can you guess why? - but I can recognise class when I hear it. Not so fun fact - I (sort of, almost, kinda) attended Gerry Rafferty's funeral: GP - Love me some Neil Young guitar magic, of which this is bereft, but the trumpet guy almost makes up for it and Joe Satriani can play, of course. Didn't much care for GP herself though. I usually take this sort of opportunity to mention Tori Amos' version of (Slayer's) Raining Blood - that's how to cover a song.

Hi Ken, thanks as always for your extensive comment. Almost half a book - Iove it 😆 And even if not all comments are positive, you at least explain your point of view, so everybody can understand. Keith Jarrett's Köln Concert is really outstanding, but Joachim Kühn's Beauty & Truth, of which I picked the song has some real good own compositions. Deodato's song is not really one of his best, I'm wondering if you know more than Zarathustra of him. The reason what I love about Grace Potter's song is, that they gave this great song a special note by the trumpet, which Neil didn't have ... and Joe's solo wasn't bad either, was it ?
Now, if you had to vote for another coversongs mixtape, what would be your vote?
Ps: thanks for the Tori Amos recommendation - will check it out right away. Have a nice weekend, Rudi 🤘

@@rudolfbecker4313 Don't know any other Deodato, I'm afraid and the trumpet was what sparkled on the Grace Potter track, though Satriani is always good. Cover songs fall into two camps - a faithful copy of the original, in which case, why bother? - or a complete reinvention. Most are inferior (unless you're covering a bad original) but some take you somewhere new and I'm always happy to hear them. If you're asking for some suggestions, that'll take some thought which I'll try and squeeze in between the Euros and other Saturday night TV. I'll get back to you tomorrow.

@@rudolfbecker4313 OK, Rudi. Here's my (roughly) 45 minutes with commentary!
      1. Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Next (originally by Jacques Brel) (preferably the OGWT video version) Brel is one of the all-time great songwriters and this version deserves to be seen as well as heard. Indescribable. Proves that The Proclaimers weren't the first to sing with a strong Scottish accent.
      2. Morte Macabre - Apoteosi del Mistero (the original is from the soundtrack of the film 'City of the Living Dead') Beautiful and haunting at the same time. May contain some mellotrons.
      3. Vanilla Fudge - You Keep Me Hanging On (The Supremes) VF and Isaac Hayes were great at this - take a good song, genre doesn't matter, slow it down and emote for the full 7.26 album version.
      4. Lone Star - She Said She Said (The Beatles) Virtually any cover of a Beatles song is worth hearing as the writing is so strong. This is one of the few that challenge the originals though.
      5. Nouvelle Vague - Too Drunk to Fuck (Dead Kennedys) This is similar to my Tori Amos selection (which is the non-album single as you'll have sought it out by now!) in that it's a song from a totally different genre - US punk - changed entirely and barely recognisable as the original. Nouvelle Vague do bossa nova versions and this sounds 100% believable.
      6. The Unthanks - Starless (King Crimson). I don't know if you know this band - essentially two sisters doing folk songs but much, much more than that. The original is my favourite piece of music ever and that this even comes close is a miracle. The added trumpet is more in an English brass band style than anything approaching jazz but this adds to the beauty.
      7. Mind Body and Soul - White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane or maybe even The Great Society) This is a 90s acid drenched cover of the original acid drenched US hit single and is impossible to find on record but, luckily, we've got UA-cam!
      8. Lamb of God - Jesus Built My Hotrod (Ministry) We needed some metal as most good covers tend to go the other way - 'cleaning up' the metal. This isn't miles away from the original but is demented enough to bookend the tape.
I think all of these are available online for free, some aren't really in Jim's wheelhouse and virtually nobody will like them all but they keep me amused.

Proud Mary by CCR is much better than Tina's.
