- The president and prime minister of Finland released a joint statement on Thursday laying out their intention to bring Finland into the NATO alliance following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. "As a member of NATO, Finland would strengthen the entire defence alliance," President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin said in the statement. "Finland must apply for NATO membership without delay," they added, saying that they hope the decision will be taken "within the next few days."
Finland shares a long, 1,300-kilometer (810-mile) border with Russia. During the Cold War, Helsinki maintained a form of diplomatic non-alignment between NATO and the Soviet Union, but Moscow's recent aggression has pushed the Baltic state to reconsider its position. Public support in Finland for joining the western alliance has shot up since Russian troops marched into Ukraine, reaching 76% according to a recent poll carried out by public broadcaster YLE. This marks a substantial shift in public perception as previous support for joining NATO had hovered around 25% for many years.
Friendly relations with Russia have soured since the beginning of the invasion with threats from Moscow that any attempt to join NATO would bring consequences. Finland, which fought in wars against the Soviet Union in 1939 and 1944, stepped up its cooperation with NATO following Russia's annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014.

As a Georgian I find it frustrating to hear people say that they changed their mind because Russia attacked their neighbors. Did you sleep last 30 years? This is 4th time Russia attacked neighboring country. In 1993, 2008 Russia occupied 20% of Georgia and in 2014 they occupied part of Ukraine itself.
Many know Russia has been a threat for decades due to them invading your country.
When will Georgia join
I am sorry about that. It might be that "it is so far away. Does not affect me." mentality. So we did sleep. And I say this in all honesty, and hope we can help Georgia get off from Russian bullying.
I had the same thought! When the Finnish young woman said that she previously viewed NATO as a war alliance, but only now sees it as a defense alliance, I suddenly realized that deficiency of education in national and world history is not only a weakness of the U.S.

As a finn I am determined but not thrilled. I would have liked Russia to have a stable democracy that wants co-operation, not submission from its neighbours. But it is what it is, and Natomembership is the right way.

My mothers family fleed from Carelia during the war, and could not return to their home even for a visit. 50 km could have been thousands of miles during soviet era.

Give me a break ! Finland is another weak, lousy European country. If NATO goes from 30 to 32, it does not make NATO stronger. NATO with or without Finland would not have been able to stop Russia in Ukraine, or put a no-fly zone, or stop Russia from using a tactical nuclear weapon on Ukraine.
Europe cannot live in peace and stability while allowing the US to use Ukraine or Finland to threaten Russia. The Russian nuclear sword should hang over Finland.

The self fulling prophesy of Russia.
The Russians made clear from 2008 on, that they couldn´t accept Ukraine joining NATO under any circumstances, as it would pose an existential threat to Russia. The Russians never said something like that about Finland nor Sweden. Their decision to join NATO (instead of already existing treaties with NATO allowing it to use these states as basis of operations in case of war), wouldn´t enhance their security at all - unless they believe that Russia and NATO will duke it out soon anyway.
@@antyspi4466 It was clear in 2008 that Ukraine would not be accepted into NATO because Russia objected to it. It could not be said explicitly as NATO is always open to other countries to join.
Some are using this to justify Putin's aggression towards Ukraine but they are wrong. When it was clear that Ukraine would not be able to join NATO in the foreseeable future, Putin saw his chance. The idea was to simply sweep the Ukrainian government of the stage and takeover the country. This is, of course, unacceptable and hence the support for Ukraine.
The recent display of unprovoked aggression of Russia towards one of it's neighbouring countries convinced Finland and Sweden to it would be wise to join NATO in case of a prolonged future war with Russia.
There is an unspeakable feeling of comfort in knowing that an attack on one, is an attack on all.
Unfortunately EU seems to work the opposite way judging from its sanctions on Poland, even though it was unified over a war against a country that is not actually its member state.
Nato is clearly a better guarantee in terms of security, EU is more concerned about maintaining politically correct thought and proper power relations within it.

I am a Swede living in Germany and I have always been against Sweden joining NATO. What has happened in the last few months have made me change my mind.
:( If ukraine would have done like Sweden and Finland and not let themselves be influenced by the US and EU, there would have been no war now. We would have been living and trading in peace with Russia. That would not have been in US interest, so they always wanted to prevent that. We allowed them to succeed.
Now, the war between east and west is being solidified. Relations are not gonna improve, there's gonna be a new wall basically, this time not trough Berlin, but trough Kiev. I understand that sweden and Finland are now deciding they will be on the west side of the wall, but this whole affair is extremely regrettable for the continent at large.

Unfortunately, there are still many people who think that NATO is a threat, when it is an organism with ideas of defense and protection. If NATO really wanted to attack Russia, it would have already done so. We have the perfect example of Ukraine, which asked for a non-flying zone and Nato declined so that the conflict does not spread. just keep it simple & true.

@@stefanlange485 For the same reason Ukraine and Georgia had to fear an attack by Russia. Finland likes to make its own decisions, without interference from Moscow. And both of them also did not threaten Russia, but only wanted a defence agreement with the rest of Europe, because they rightfully feared Russian aggression.
Also Russia is quite openly threatening Finland and Sweden on a regular basis and regularly violates their airspace with military planes.
And there are no US nuclear missiles in Europe. There are a few nuclear bombs for plane delivery stored in the western part of Germany, where they were stored since the 70s. But as the US and USSR/Russia have a contract not to base any nukes or mayor permanent military bases further east than western Germany, and the US are honouring it, there are no nukes or permanent major US conignents any closer to Moscow than western Germany. Russia did base nuclear Iskander-M SRBMs in Kaliningrad though. So the only nuclear missiles in that part of Europe are Russian.

Despite joining NATO, Finland can still somewhat retain neutrality. Take Turkey for example. Despite the fact that the country is a NATO member, its also where peace talks between Ukraine and Russia took place.

The global west is 39x larger economy than Russia (Russia is smaller economy than Canada). NATO spends 24x more on military. That's like Russia fighting 220 Ukraines at the same time (just stop and imagine that, 220 Ukraines at the same time). There is no Russia vs NATO. Russia is only cosplaying as a military superpower. With such small economy it is not even possible.

As an American, I think this is likely the right answer, but what's important here is that Finland choose for itself, and wasn't bullied by Russia or US or anyone else. They looked at the facts, what is going on, and elected for a defensive agreement, which is ALWAYS what NATO has been about. Even if Finland leaves NATO right after leaving, I trust the Finnish to do what is best for Finland and the region while respecting basic human rights; something the world clearly cannot trust russians with.

Welcome Finland! I support this move because Scandinavia is an extremely important place to me. I would like to see formal alliances with Finland and Sweden, joining Norway (one of my ancestral homelands) in NATO.
Its unfortunate that Finland and Sweden must now choose whether to join NATO. However, sometimes you don't get to choose when another nation's leader decides that your country must be "de-Nazified". NATO will provide a security mechanism that has been proven to be necessary. Putin invaded Ukraine because it wasn't a NATO member and underestimated the ability of Ukraine to fight back. In the end he will be responsible for causing Finland and most likely Sweden to join the alliance. Epic fail for Putin and Russia. The people of Russia will eventually tire from the impact of this war on their lives and blame Putin, but it will be too late for them.

Well joining NATO is basically war declaration to Russia. Our govt knows this. And is happy to fight to the last Citizen. Must realise they them selves are not joining the war. They are looking for nice positions in Elite's organisations. Those organisations greatly benefit from wars. So this is as it always has been so called leaders benefit from murdering own citizens.
Western media has done wonders to make this possible.
Finland is a great country and speaking as an American we are glad to have them in the alliance. We hope Sweden makes the same decision. It will make us a lot stronger in resisting the old guard KGB/FSB establishment still running Russia from pursuing their dreams of taking over Eastern Europe and establishing the old Soviet Union. We're hoping the Russian people will replace them with real democratic representation so we can have a friendly cooperative relationship with Russia in which we all flourish and help to build a safer more prosperous world but it doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon.

@@PeterSedesse What we are doing with Ukraine is offer material and intelligence support. There's a major difference between that and an attack triggering article 5 and having NATO forces join the fight directly. It seems to me that NATO as a whole would not have done that for Finland, but individual NATO members might have. But by doing so, effectively becoming the aggressor towards Russia as they themselves were not directly attacked, they would forego article 5 protection in the conflict.
In other words, being an actual NATO member is a _big_ difference when it comes to how an attack is responded to. This is much more than a formality.

@@jansix4287 If a NATO member is attacked, all of NATO is by definition now at war with that aggressor. NATO cannot escalate by getting involved, it's already in the fight. It's a very different scenario to NATO choosing to get directly involved in the fight in Ukraine. If they were to do that, they would not be defending against a Russia that went to war with NATO, they would be attacking Russia for having gone to war with Ukraine. Justified as we may all feel that would be, it's a very different scenario from a geopolitical point of view.
I live in North Eastern Minnesota, we have a very strong Finnish influence here, and, of course Swedes and Norwegians as well. I too am descended from Danes, Swedes and Norwegians who came here in the 19th century. All of the Nordic countries are tough and resoruceful, well educated, and prosperous, with robust defense indutries and strong armies and navies. With both Finland and Sweden as members, NATO wil be stronger than ever. If Putin wanted to prevent this, he has only himself to blame.

For the first time in news videos is the fact Finland has been a NATO partner for many years albeit it not a full member. The application for Finland's inclusion in NATO looks like a foregone conclusion and will be processed rapidly. For Mr Putin it means he has to consider another deployment of troops along another very long border, further spreading and therefore weakening his military assets. Which assets have proved to be remarkably inept in Ukraine.

The article, and the NATO as a whole, are defensive alliance so NATO waits for the Russia to declare war first and then all of the NATO will annihilate Russia back to the stone age. Defending brother NATO-members will be a good reason to go to war with Russia. Russia has left almost million men dead at the borders of Finland, we will be happy to increase that number even more if Russia wants.
