Short film about the Bellrock Lighthouse and the Year of the Light celebrations to commemorate its bicentenary. Includes interviews with John Boath, the last principal keeper of the lighthouse; and David Taylor, authority on the subject and creator of www.bellrock.org. Graphics using engravings from Robert Stevenson's account of the construction of the Bellrock Lighthouse show how the structure was built off the coast of Northeast Scotland 200 years ago.

So nice to see and hear from local people and all with different takes on what this light meant to them and others they knew, the history and the little anecdotes too. I know the sun isn't always shining and the sea isn't always calm but even in rough weather it must have been quite 'cosy' and somewhat mysterious. The builders and engineers, without todays modern machines and engines REALLY WERE special people!
Thanks for posting! My ancestor, William Fasken, originally from Forgue, Aberdeenshire, was an architect, and stone mason on the Bell Rock. He later migrated to Elora, Canada. I own his compass and my cousin owns an original 1811 drawing of a Corinthian Pillar William drew.
My mother's ashes were scattered near the lighthouse on 8th Aug 2018, her name was Sadie Reid, she was age 90.
The Florida Keys has lighthouses built on the reefs. Keepers lived on them with their families. Some had a bit of land, some didn’t. My distant cousin was raised on Fowry Rocks Lighthouse. His dad was the keeper, his grandfather kept the Cape Florida lighthouse on Key Biscayne when it was a private island. The most important time to be their was when their was a storm and that was the scariest time too. The light had to be kept lit or ships could run aground and lives could be lost.
used to stay there
Bell Rock lighthouse is the oldest and keep going for years
I worked there
No mention of its height!
Backing music far too loud and unneccesary, otherwise great video
