Played RE original again recently and be fair was pleasantly surprised to see how well it holds up. Don't know why so many people have such an issue with tank controls, they always made sense to me. RE is just a classic period.
Even when they were popular people were bad at using them. You can get better at it but they're not very good controls. That kind of pivoting control scheme works better on top down 2d games if anything.
Yeah, I honestly don't know either why people made an issue with tank controls. You just got used to them, I don't know...it was like any video game of the time for N64/PSone. The controls were wonky until your muscle memory took over and you didn't even know what you were doing, but you were doing it right lol (maybe people my age that grew up with 90's video games know what I'm talking about)

Holy shit!!!! SUPER honored that you used my footage at 13:25!!! Used to run The Horror Is Alive web site for Resident Evil, and I've been out of the scene for probably a decade or more. But I'm the ONLY person with that footage from the coop version of Resident Evil, recorded it off a VHS copy of a Game Pro TV episode from the 90s I had laying around. It aired on whatever the network was called PRIOR to TechTV which later became G4. *Fist bump* Legendarily cool to see my contribution to the community living on after all these years.

26 minutes of comparing ports of a 23 year old game? This is exactly what I want from my UA-cam content. (Not snarking, it literally is xD) Also, yes you are correct about the Japanese Saturn version. Not only that, but all the Japanese 90s releases of all versions of RE1 are like that, Capcom USA artificially inflated the difficulty of the US release to combat the rental market, so the game couldn't be finished over a single weekend.
Capcom and especially Konami did that a lot. Castlevania 3 was incredibly well balanced on the Famicom. When it came to America, they made it the most unfairly BS game in the main series.
Dude I have been around since the first video in the retrospective and tbh these are truly amazing. Sometimes I go back and rewatch the whole series. So happy that you're giving more love to the original RE. And hope the retrospective will keep on going!

great video man! I love RE:DS, me and a friend of mine both brought it together and raced through it- and even got to to mess around with the multiplayer modes! getting to play as wesker and the other STARS members were really cool
Awesome vid. When I stumbled upon the DS port i was pleasantly surprised. Along with the quick turn and knife features added the active reload was always a nice touch too.
Seeing all of the different ports for RE1 was pretty cool, I never realized there was so many. But still, that's pretty awesome. I was pretty amazing that the Nintendo DS had the graphics so smooth for such a little piece of hardware. Seeing and hearing all the talks about ports and emulators makes me want to try to get resident evil outbreak on my pc.....Anyway, great review as always Jared! Will keep tuning for more reviews!
nintendo ds has 66mhz processor and 4 mb of ram. almost double the power of first playstation (33mhz 2mb ram 1 vram) so there is nothing unusual. generally good working port. I'm surprised why Jared is so astonished about it.

Always loved the DS port , especially considering it even had the non Directors Cut music. Playing it again recently after uncovering a god awful Xplay review of it from back in the day. Definitely underrated and deserves a lot a love
Regarding playing games like this at higher 3D rendering resolutions, I prefer over that upscaling from the original resolution as well, but for what seems like a different reason to you. For games like this, I care about the 3D geometry (characters, objects, etc.) matching the resolution of the pre-rendered environment that they inhabit, and upping the rendering resolution makes the models stand out very starkly with their super crisp appearance compared to the low resolution backgrounds. While it's often still obvious what is a 3D model and what is part of the background at native resolution, it's at least not as jarring than in 1080p or something. What I actually prefer doing over _both_ of these however when I have the option is downsampling; rendering the game internally at a high resolution but then scaling it back down to the same resolution as the backgrounds before video output. This smooths out much of the aliasing that comes from playing at native resolution, and also helps bring out detail in the 3D models and (most importantly) in making them blend in naturally with the backgrounds. I imagine this effect works even better with a CRT and analog video too, but unfortunately while I have a CRT I can't really hook up my laptop to one.
Hell yeah!!!! Just remember to hold select and start when the game boots, so it starts up in its original resolution, and not the non integer scale the 3ds uses for ds games.

Cant wait for the Re3 version of this. Each ports have pros and cons honestly. Imo the PC remake port of RE1 is the best place to play. It has some essential mods too.

Resident evil is one of my favorite games of all time I literally play and complete the game without saving at least 2 maybe 3 times a year on my PS Vita, A few years back I won a bid on eBay for a sealed copy of Deadly Silence and I couldn’t wait to play, but once I got the copy in my hands and saw that beautiful factory seal I couldn’t come around to opening it, I might just take a shot of jack and crack open that sob tonight!!! How’s that for an accomplishment!
Can I just say (and I hope that I'm not alone) that I f@cking miss that period of time where multi-platform releases weren't a thing, and that ports to different systems would have their downsides but also sometimes some really unique additions or work-arounds. A fascinating time for programmers far and wide when it came to bringing a popular franchise to their native systems.
William RPD meanwhile some people are toxic in a different way. They feel the the series/devs can do no wrong, and are entitled to your time, money, and praise. The reality is that, they aren't. The RE series' experimental & often trend chasing spinoffs, have been hit or miss, with way more misses than hits. This is ESPECIALLY true of the Online MP Shooter titles. Outside of Outbreak, the Online focused spinoffs have been FLAT OUT TRAINWRECKS both critically and financially. So it's pretty obvious how the community feels Online MP Shooter games. Yet here Capcom go again, trying to force another Online Multiplayer Shooter down the community's throats... despite the community already making it known loud and clear that that is the OPPOSITE of what they want.

People that blindly hate co-op shooters because it isn't what they wanted to be developed. Sounds like a personal problem. The rest of us are having fun, so they aren't "trainwrecks". This, of course can make you doubt about older content, but if you did the best you could at the time you don't have to be so troubled about it. It's only natural to not be satisfied with one's creative output, especially if done when one had less experience. You've never done a bad video, believe me.

Just finished the video, man, if you liked the DS version, you should check out the multiplayer options. It's surprisingly good and fun. I loved being able to play a psuedo mercenaries mode as Forest.
Dude these retrospectives are must watches for everyone who loves gaming. I love RE and I was so stoped when I found these videos. I hope you do a couple on the Evil Within and Daymare 1998 when it drops.

Great to see the lesser known ports of RE1 getting some focus, RE:DS was my introduction to classic RE and I wad hooked from there, finding RE2, CVX, Outbreak and RE3 afterwards from there. Perhaps your next video could be on other incomplete RE projects ie the Saturn port for RE2, hypothetical DS port, CVX prototype and so forth.
Excellent entry in the retrospective, Jared! As for the change in the VA for Richard, I think it could be due to the original VA (a DJ living in Japan, which also voiced Richter in SotN!) sadly passing in the early 00's. Maybe that's why Capcom got a new cast member, taking into account the new dialogue lines in the DS port you talked about.

Thanks for doing this just replayed directors cut on my ps mini (yeah I’m one that bought one there’s like me and three others) and really wanted to refresh my memory of how my Saturn version looked. Man I loved that console
The DS version also has manual reloading :). Thr DS version is my fav (though the Classic Rebirth PC version looks awesome too). I also like the inclusion of subtitles in the DS version.
14:38 I believe this animation plays in the final game if you shoot a zombie with a shotgun from far away, unless I'm remembering wrong and only hunters had this (although I don't think I remember seeing the knock back+down combination, not sure if I just didn't happen to trigger it or it simply isn't there)
And now we can also count the GOG PC release, alongside 2 and 3 Classic, which I have been waiting a long time for. I can finally experience the original titles and get a better appreciation for the roots of one of my favourite franchises.
One thing that the DS version does well is in the library it introduces the Chimera, in the original The Chimera is just a monster in the power room and when you leave - where the zombies, dogs, hunters get so much more presence.

Having RE to play on a Gameboy, that would've blown my mind back then - I wouldn't mind digging into the situation there, why it had gotten so far along before being put down 🙍 it's a shame the devs didn't receive the proper acclaim, if only for the feat of boiling things down without boiling everything off 👍
One thing you fell to mention that in the Saturn version of resident evil 1 if you play as Chris in the lab where you fight the tyrant after you know Wesker's monologue you actually have to fight too tyrants and only works as Chris for some reason but I hear it's pretty cool
2 and 3 would probably have to be one video together since there's less ports. Just PC, Dreamcast, and GC for them. Though Nemesis' original PC port from 99 (Japanese Mediakite specifically) runs surprisingly well on my Windows 10 PC with barely any adjustment. The only thing that took work was getting my Dualshock 4 working, but I actually did get it working without Xpadder or anything. Just some config file edits. In fact, the 99 PC port of Nemesis (60fps) actually runs better than the Sourcenext 2006 port (30fps I believe), where with RE2 it was the opposite. And then there's RE4's original PC port which is hilariously bad.
I used to follow a dude online that had a page called Chris’s Survival Horror Quest. He tracked down horror games and did quick write ups and star ratings. Seeing this video and all the variations of RE reminded me that could be a pretty sick UA-cam concept. And probably an expensive one lol.
The ds port is absolutly amazing. Also idk if u noticed but there are more animations. Chris will punch a zombie as a counter. Not only that. When u push a zombie its a new animation. Over all the animations are almost all new
Another thing to note about the Ds version is that the new features aren't mandatory; you can play it in original mode which retains the original PS1 gameplay and features
Great video. I played RE1 on PS1 and PC when it first came out (I had a PC, my cousin had a PS1). There were no controller problems back then. With an era-appropriate PC, it played really well! Oh, btw, you missed a port: The Rendition Verite PC port. It's extremely rare and next to impossible to find though (even harder than the Verite hardware.) And of course it's useless without the hardware to run it on.
Couldn't agree more with you on resident Evil DS such a fantastic version plus the skip door loads is a god send it's such a great game and my go to version when I play RE1
My very first RE game was the PC version of RE1 back when the series was only on the 2nd game. I got lucky as that was the best version back then and Win 95/98 PC could run it no problem. The Director's Cut of RE is worth a mention too due to the rearranged campaign. It even has a new jump scare with the crow during the 2nd part of the mansion.
I'm really surprised you chose the DS version as your favorite and definitive version, considering you're the type to care so much about resolution and the like. Personally for me, the DS version is also my favorite with really good memories. My uncle randomly bought me the game one day when we were at Gamestop with my cousin and it was a game I wanted at the time but didn't have the money. When I played the game, I was super hyped and really enjoyed the game many times through. I absolutely loved how portable it was and the extra modes it has like Rebirth mode. It became one of my favorite DS games of all time, one that was too good to be true. I couldn't believe they were able to put it on the DS at the time. Through the DS version I was able to learn the game inside and out. I always wished that they also brought RE2 to the DS, but it never happened. It wasn't until I got a PSP and played RE2 on there for a handheld experience. Yes I"m a sucker for handheld games, which is why Im so glad that Resident Evil is on the Switch. We now have a way to play Residen Evil Remake as a handheld game.
About a couple years late, but the first 3 games have been ported to GOG, making them far more playable on modern pcs, im not sure if the classic rebirth team plans to add support for them seeing as they aren't the sourcenext ports, but I can see that as a good entryway for the beginner, since it has all the pc bonuses as a cheap $29.99 way cheaper then any of the game discs.
Note on the controls for the PC version there, were you trying to use an X-Input controller? Those are far too new for it to understand properly, it has to be older D-Input controller instead.
It's a shame RE2 never came to the DS. I always had great fun replaying 1 on the DS back in the day.

Also, REupscale project for REmake is an absolute must, it fixes nearly every problem with the backgrounds in that game

For games like this, I care about the 3D geometry (characters, objects, etc.) matching the resolution of the pre-rendered environment that they inhabit, and upping the rendering resolution makes the models stand out very starkly with their super crisp appearance compared to the low resolution backgrounds. While it's often still obvious what is a 3D model and what is part of the background at native resolution, it's at least not as jarring than in 1080p or something.
What I actually prefer doing over _both_ of these however when I have the option is downsampling; rendering the game internally at a high resolution but then scaling it back down to the same resolution as the backgrounds before video output. This smooths out much of the aliasing that comes from playing at native resolution, and also helps bring out detail in the 3D models and (most importantly) in making them blend in naturally with the backgrounds. I imagine this effect works even better with a CRT and analog video too, but unfortunately while I have a CRT I can't really hook up my laptop to one.

Hell yeah!!!! Just remember to hold select and start when the game boots, so it starts up in its original resolution, and not the non integer scale the 3ds uses for ds games.

Resident evil is one of my favorite games of all time I literally play and complete the game without saving at least 2 maybe 3 times a year on my PS Vita, A few years back I won a bid on eBay for a sealed copy of Deadly Silence and I couldn’t wait to play, but once I got the copy in my hands and saw that beautiful factory seal I couldn’t come around to opening it, I might just take a shot of jack and crack open that sob tonight!!! How’s that for an accomplishment!

Can I just say (and I hope that I'm not alone) that I f@cking miss that period of time where multi-platform releases weren't a thing, and that ports to different systems would have their downsides but also sometimes some really unique additions or work-arounds. A fascinating time for programmers far and wide when it came to bringing a popular franchise to their native systems.

It's so distasteful how many people unliked the video... Toxic ass community that doesn't understand how spin-offs work
William RPD meanwhile some people are toxic in a different way. They feel the the series/devs can do no wrong, and are entitled to your time, money, and praise. The reality is that, they aren't. The RE series' experimental & often trend chasing spinoffs, have been hit or miss, with way more misses than hits. This is ESPECIALLY true of the Online MP Shooter titles.
Outside of Outbreak, the Online focused spinoffs have been FLAT OUT TRAINWRECKS both critically and financially. So it's pretty obvious how the community feels Online MP Shooter games. Yet here Capcom go again, trying to force another Online Multiplayer Shooter down the community's throats... despite the community already making it known loud and clear that that is the OPPOSITE of what they want.
@@Kenshiro3rd ORC and UC both have active online communities. How many other shooters that age do? Answer_____. People that blindly hate co-op shooters because it isn't what they wanted to be developed. Sounds like a personal problem. The rest of us are having fun, so they aren't "trainwrecks". Both games are perfectly fine for what they are. We enjoy playing them. Get over it.

Just finished the video, man, if you liked the DS version, you should check out the multiplayer options. It's surprisingly good and fun. I loved being able to play a psuedo mercenaries mode as Forest.
Dude these retrospectives are must watches for everyone who loves gaming. I love RE and I was so stoped when I found these videos. I hope you do a couple on the Evil Within and Daymare 1998 when it drops.

Great to see the lesser known ports of RE1 getting some focus, RE:DS was my introduction to classic RE and I wad hooked from there, finding RE2, CVX, Outbreak and RE3 afterwards from there.
Perhaps your next video could be on other incomplete RE projects ie the Saturn port for RE2, hypothetical DS port, CVX prototype and so forth.
The Saturn CAN do 3d true transparency on VDP2, but it takes a lot of resources to do so.
Excellent entry in the retrospective, Jared! As for the change in the VA for Richard, I think it could be due to the original VA (a DJ living in Japan, which also voiced Richter in SotN!) sadly passing in the early 00's. Maybe that's why Capcom got a new cast member, taking into account the new dialogue lines in the DS port you talked about.

The DS version also has manual reloading :). Thr DS version is my fav (though the Classic Rebirth PC version looks awesome too). I also like the inclusion of subtitles in the DS version.

14:38 I believe this animation plays in the final game if you shoot a zombie with a shotgun from far away, unless I'm remembering wrong and only hunters had this (although I don't think I remember seeing the knock back+down combination, not sure if I just didn't happen to trigger it or it simply isn't there)

And now we can also count the GOG PC release, alongside 2 and 3 Classic, which I have been waiting a long time for. I can finally experience the original titles and get a better appreciation for the roots of one of my favourite franchises.
Great comparisons! I really want to try that PC version now and see how it runs on the original late '90s hardware I have. Should be a fun experiment.
One thing that the DS version does well is in the library it introduces the Chimera, in the original The Chimera is just a monster in the power room and when you leave - where the zombies, dogs, hunters get so much more presence.

Having RE to play on a Gameboy, that would've blown my mind back then - I wouldn't mind digging into the situation there, why it had gotten so far along before being put down 🙍 it's a shame the devs didn't receive the proper acclaim, if only for the feat of boiling things down without boiling everything off 👍
One thing you fell to mention that in the Saturn version of resident evil 1 if you play as Chris in the lab where you fight the tyrant after you know Wesker's monologue you actually have to fight too tyrants and only works as Chris for some reason but I hear it's pretty cool

2 and 3 would probably have to be one video together since there's less ports. Just PC, Dreamcast, and GC for them. Though Nemesis' original PC port from 99 (Japanese Mediakite specifically) runs surprisingly well on my Windows 10 PC with barely any adjustment. The only thing that took work was getting my Dualshock 4 working, but I actually did get it working without Xpadder or anything. Just some config file edits. In fact, the 99 PC port of Nemesis (60fps) actually runs better than the Sourcenext 2006 port (30fps I believe), where with RE2 it was the opposite.
And then there's RE4's original PC port which is hilariously bad.

I used to follow a dude online that had a page called Chris’s Survival Horror Quest. He tracked down horror games and did quick write ups and star ratings. Seeing this video and all the variations of RE reminded me that could be a pretty sick UA-cam concept. And probably an expensive one lol.

The ds port is absolutly amazing. Also idk if u noticed but there are more animations. Chris will punch a zombie as a counter. Not only that. When u push a zombie its a new animation.
Over all the animations are almost all new

Another thing to note about the Ds version is that the new features aren't mandatory; you can play it in original mode which retains the original PS1 gameplay and features

I played RE1 on PS1 and PC when it first came out (I had a PC, my cousin had a PS1). There were no controller problems back then. With an era-appropriate PC, it played really well!
Oh, btw, you missed a port: The Rendition Verite PC port. It's extremely rare and next to impossible to find though (even harder than the Verite hardware.) And of course it's useless without the hardware to run it on.
The originals soundtrack has always stayed with me.... very haunting.... love it

My very first RE game was the PC version of RE1 back when the series was only on the 2nd game. I got lucky as that was the best version back then and Win 95/98 PC could run it no problem.
The Director's Cut of RE is worth a mention too due to the rearranged campaign. It even has a new jump scare with the crow during the 2nd part of the mansion.
I'm really surprised you chose the DS version as your favorite and definitive version, considering you're the type to care so much about resolution and the like. Personally for me, the DS version is also my favorite with really good memories. My uncle randomly bought me the game one day when we were at Gamestop with my cousin and it was a game I wanted at the time but didn't have the money. When I played the game, I was super hyped and really enjoyed the game many times through. I absolutely loved how portable it was and the extra modes it has like Rebirth mode. It became one of my favorite DS games of all time, one that was too good to be true. I couldn't believe they were able to put it on the DS at the time. Through the DS version I was able to learn the game inside and out. I always wished that they also brought RE2 to the DS, but it never happened. It wasn't until I got a PSP and played RE2 on there for a handheld experience. Yes I"m a sucker for handheld games, which is why Im so glad that Resident Evil is on the Switch. We now have a way to play Residen Evil Remake as a handheld game.
To be honest, I never left the Mansion. In my mind, I'm always there, so I always squeeze in a run of RE every year.

I'm having a blast with RE DS
About a couple years late, but the first 3 games have been ported to GOG, making them far more playable on modern pcs, im not sure if the classic rebirth team plans to add support for them seeing as they aren't the sourcenext ports, but I can see that as a good entryway for the beginner, since it has all the pc bonuses as a cheap $29.99 way cheaper then any of the game discs.

Note on the controls for the PC version there, were you trying to use an X-Input controller? Those are far too new for it to understand properly, it has to be older D-Input controller instead.
