i always see people call oculink the saviour or the "budget option" even though you basically need a brand new very very specific minipc/laptop for it meanwhile tb4 has been on any mid to high end intel laptop from 2018 and up, there are also aliexpress adapters for tb4 for 100eur-ish, but sadly you get less bandwidth vs oculink itd be awesome if you could try that out and compare
At some point I might do a round-up, Thunderbolt/USB4 vs. Oculink vs. PCI-E. The thing is, I don't have a PC that natively supports all three, so I might have to use adapters.
@@AurasV that is usbc and uses thunderbolt comparability so again makes tb egpu method way more available, post 2022 amd and post 2018 intel laptops that aren't ewaste spec are eligible without having to take the back off and remove your main storage method, needing restart and setup each time. id love to have oculink but if you just want to plug and play you need a current year asus rog or one of those Chinese mini pcs

Oculink really is good. With an Aoostar or Minisforum dock life has been much easier. My favorite to date is MinisForum Dock with Aoostar Gem 12 8845HS. My Gem 10 with 7840 seems to have issues with heat, reboots and the price looks to have gone UP instead of down. I am afraid that these MiniPC's might be out pricing their own market. Aoostar does have upgrades to BIOS and drivers on their website, which I have yet to install. Might help the heat and reboots while gaming. But it makes a great 3 Nvme tiny media server. Gem 12 at 8845HS with a 4060TI is my choice for gaming, either 1080p or 1440p... but it is all fun fun fun in these days of downsizing.
@ that’s a valid point, and for people with older office PCs, or older PSUs in general that just want a graphics upgrade, the 3050 6GB makes a lot of sense. I was merely commenting on the fact that nvidia’s budget GPU barely beats a 7 year old budget amd GPU. I would expect a modern GPU in the $200 price range to at least double the performance of the rx 580.
To be fair, rx 580 cost about $300 on launch when accounting for inflation, and 3050 6gb is a particularly poor value card. Edit: also, 3050 6gb is hilariously bandwidth constrained even outside of an eGPU setup, having a 96 bit bus and all.
crazy you cant comprehend that this to be expected. your comparing a older "mid/high end" card of its time to the budget card of today. there will be a day when the rtx 8060 will probably be 1:1 to the rtx 4090 / 5090, but you wont make that comparison because those cards do not have the same stigma as the 3050
I run an aoostar gem12 with a 6900hx with a 6900xt hooked up to it via oculink port. One thing I would recommend is investing in a high quality oculink cable. The port has the potential short out the motherboard if the cable is disconnected with the power running. I headed the warning on the case and bought a seperate oculink cable before even testing the dock
for me, it "clips" in and is very hard to disconnect without pressing the tab firmly.. sometimes it is much harder to get out than put in. I did find that the cable Minisforum gives out with their dock runs a bit slower than a cable I purchased as a separate item with a 90 bend I wanted, Not by much, but every Frame counts huh. I would like to see a nice metal case to fit over the Minis Dock though, least for GPU's that run to edge of device. Currently I just turn it off while not gaming and toss a microfiber towel over it to avoid dust when cooled. another good reason for an external GPU.. computer runs cooler and you can use it on a few different Mini's!
I ran an external GPU for two or three years, not in the conventional sense like a mini PC/NUC or laptop, just a low profile Silverstone ML03 case. Until the LP RTX 4060 came out the best option was a LP GTX 1650, aside from obscure workstation cards like the A2000, already had the 6/8 pin power from my PSU, just no space to put it in the case, bought an RC04 riser and although it's supposed to be PCIe Gen 3 it showed up in the system as Gen 4.
I was just looking at PCPartPicker and was surprised to see the A750 is cheaper than the A580 in the UK right now. I'd pick one up, but I just ordered a 16GB A770 and I'm a bit over-stocked on GPUs right now...

How is the RX 580 still 50-100% faster than even the (almost) latest top of the line iGPU is crazy to me. But looking at the specs it makes sense, it's basically an RX 6400 that uses system RAM and probably has much lower clocks.
friend of mine wants to get an external GPU to play MSFS on his Surface. I wonder how NVidia compares to AMD on that CPU. I have recommended that he gets a similar priced AMD instead of NV due to CPU overhead but I am not sure how good my advice is.
MSFS is terrible on low end CPUs, and it usually results in really short draw distances. Depending on which Surface it is, your friend might find that it ends up looking like an N64 game, regardless of which graphics card he uses.
@@IcebergTech Not only that. He wants to plug 2 monitors in so that the surface is the console and the 2 monitors are the view out the plane. He sounds pretty adamant. I think I will keep quiet about this now.
Pretending an oculink adapter is a serious contender for an iGPU rig seems dishonest considering laptop users are the ones who want this and all we have is thunderbolt and usb-c.

Crazy that the rtx 3050 6GB only beats the RX 580 by 10-20%, considering that the 3050 is 7 years newer.
Rx580 is using more than 2x the power tho. When compared to something like the GTX 1650 it's still a joke with the improvements in power efficiency.
