      Literally me a couple of hours ago. Had no idea where the rest of the secrets were (in my defense though I did find about 6-7 secrets out of 13) and the remaining enemies were sooooOOOOOOOooooo far that even GETTING to them would take me another hour. I was like "fuck it" and left. 99% kills tho so there's that.

    I'm going to start watching now, but this was one of my favorite Doom levels of all time. The way the level loops back on itself is so cool. I of course game myself the benefit of a few saves in order to not lose sanity. Just loading the level and hearing those beginning track chords is all you need to realize you're getting into something big.

  • @kakhome1

    My favorite map of one of (if not) my favorite wad(s). The effort to make this must have been just phenomenal. The complete nonlinearity up until you are ready to use all three keys is done perfectly IMO and really creates the feeling of a full-scale epic, worthy of being an entire episode or a standalone map unto itself, but also fitting perfectly fine as the most hidden map in all of Eviternity. The coloring system with the buildings was not only well done IMO, but also ensured I didn't get lost or lose my sense of place here...with the blue/red/yellow colors being good hints that you need to find the corresponding keys there.

    I really loved how open-ended this level was, though I can fully understand how anxiety-inducing it was to get 100% with all those interconnecting areas. I really felt for you in those last 10 minutes searching for the last monster. Well, at least we got a great look at Map 32 along the way!
    I also loved that sort of Dark Souls-type of anticipation for the final area, the black-green tower looming in the distance. Eviternity likes doing that in a future chapter. Definitely looking forward to future levels.

  • @andromeda-dsda
    @andromeda-dsda 5 років тому +183

    In my opinion, you shouldn't feel ashamed for having to use the "Show alive monsters" option as it saves you a lot of grief. I know it feels dirty to resort to that, but it's perfectly acceptable to use if you're missing a single monster in such a huge level.
    Myself, I use IDDT to find missing monsters and IDCLIP whenever I miss an easy jump that requires me to backtrack 30+ seconds to try again :P Otherwise, I follow the pistol start, 100% everything, no saves crew.

    • @DinnerForkTongue
      @DinnerForkTongue 5 років тому +17

      Your IDCLIP usage standards are the same sole reason why I have jumping enabled when I play. Purely quality-of-life thing.

      Yet for the first time (to my knowledge) decino broke his self-imposed rules by resorting to a cheat. The run, brilliant as it is, is marred. I wonder when he will return to Anagnorisis to mend that. Probably more a question of when rather than if. After Valiant?
      It was not even a glitch problem like a stuck monster failing to teleport in. The captain was plain out in the open. The error was decino's. Had he, in his usual perfectionism that I do not even aspire to imitate, got the kill number prior to entering the final area correct, he would have known that the missing monster was around the final building. That burns. Mark my words: Not for us but for himself he will eventually do a replay. Else the map has beaten him.

      I'm playing this WAD along with Decino and I would also like to thank you for sharing this amazing map with us. I thought I'd briefly give it a go after completing the first secret level, but instead ended up playing until sundown. Lovely times were had in the orange building (which I reckon I won't visit first on further playthroughs), in the yellow area with that lovely arch-vile trap, and in the red building being chased by the two astral cacos while under 20% health. I love how I ended up taking a completely different route from Decino. I somehow ended up dying to the cyber-bruiser guarding the second BFG (who was exceptionally stealthy that time), but if not, the final battle would surely have gotten me. The surprise cyberdemons make for quite the evil ending to such a lengthy map.

    Took me 3 hours and 47 minutes to beat, mostly because I got lost all the time and also couldn't find the last 10 health bonuses for over an hour... it ALMOST made me use IDDT, but I thankfully managed to find them on that one narrow cliff near the beginning (the ones you picked up at 35:53). It's almost as monstrous as this one, with many separate hard fights, and when you're done you get SO satisfied. Although I would _never_ do it with no saves, I can't stand playing a single level for that long and it's a recipe for frustration for me.

    Towards the end I saw you skip that Berserk pack and was thinking to myself, "you're gonna miss a kill." One thing I learned about this map and all throughout Eviternity is ain't nutin' free - almost every time there's a trap waiting on doomguy, whether it's a key or an item. BTW I'm absolutely floored at the fact you made it through this map without any saves. God knows I was hitting saves like there was no tomorrow (or should I say eternity). Well done!

    I honestly thought you'd left one of the Mancubi who were sniping you from across the map near the end of the rocky area alive, but it turned out it was a sneaky Captain near a superfluous Beserk.

    Just finished watching it. Impressions: beautiful map! Not only beautiful and well-designed, but some very impressive features in it that I've never seen before. Someone obviously put a lot of work into it. The level of map-making is so far advanced beyond the 1990s when Doom 2 came out. And difficulty levels too. It was a very hard map, with scores of monsters and traps. Only a master player could have done it. A very nice balance between violence and puzzle-solving, as well. You seem to have done it many times before, as you navigated it almost flawlessly. The missing monster at the end is no biggie. It was a chance for everyone to further appreciate the aesthetics of the map.

      Ukiro must have sketched the whole map several times to come up with a gauntlet accessible from every direction like he did. I respect the shit out of that. Heck, sometimes I boot up Eviternity and IDCLEV to Anagnorisis here for the sheer fun of it.
      The only thing I don't like is the music. I don't like metal and don't think the rhythm fits the map in any way. So I swapped the music in the wad file out in favour of BTSX E1's own map32 tune: Atomic, by Jimmy. Lemme tell you, it makes me _way_ more stoked to play now.

    This map is one of the coolest things I've ever played. While the length of the map is the only criticism I have for it, the odd thing about it is that it didn't detract from how much fun I had playing it.

    I have tremendous respect for this map, how well it's crafted and all but boy oh boy I got worn down by the time I hit the yellow doors full of captains (which I charged in head first unknowingly and got totally decimated) but that final fight was a thrill.

      Btw: you say you don't care to post mods, but playing through Skulldash for the first time, I'd really dig to see you tear the maps up. Seems it's a mod that you'd actually have a good time with, and compatible with your style of posting videos and sense of satisfaction from challenge/optimization/improvisation. Give it a try off camera if you've never played it for some reason; dunno why I hadn't.

      @@DinnerForkTongue It's a time trial mod, basically. 5 types of coins across self-contained maps (49 of em) that do different things; from basic, 25 health including overcharge, to 100 armor. You collect at least 75% to open the exit. 100% gives you a soulsphere to carry over to the next level (health being the only thing that can carry between levels, but not armor). Every 4 levels + 1 boss, and the bosses are all actually fucking awesome.. moreso bullethell than Doom "bosses" feel. 100%ing all 5 levels of a Tier unlocks a proportionally harder level than that entire Tier. There are a few new enemies, and situationally unique weapons (or well hidden in secrets), but nothing you haven't seen before--just executed really, really well.
      It's pretty damn good. Good music, great gameplay despite not much changing that radically aside from focal point.
      There's also a Score system per level, the only thing killing actually contributes to aside from area access and a few traps/arenas to clear the way. The maps are mostly non-linear after the first couple that show you the ropes. It's not _really_ hard until later, and if you get autistic about 100%. Then it makes sense the changes are all immaculate in balance to focusing the gameplay on a new concept without changing really that much.
