Was the history books written wrong? I thought King Alfred took the throne after the death of his older brother King Athelred's death during battle. So this film is more accurate then?
Judith's character really lost me this season. She comes off as an opportunistic schemer who is picking favorites among her children and betraying her just-deceased husband. She has become very similar to Aslaug's character. There is truth to what Aethelred said about Judith favoring Alfred because Judith loved Athelstan and Ecbert instead of Athelwulf. Judith comes off as being selfish -- like she is trying to erase Athelwulf from everything just moments after he dies. Also, it doesn't make sense why Alfred must be king in order to be in charge of policymaking. Why can't there be a warrior-king who is in charge of the military and lets his politician brother and advisor mother be in charge of managing the country? It's like they made these plot points just to have Alfred's ascension imperfectly mirror Ivar's.
And of course Alfred is the better king, both in this show and historically, but I am not convinced that Judith chose Alfred primarily out of love of country.
Wow holy shit, after the latest episode, Judith is WAAAAY too far gone. She doesn't deserve to be a mother. I feel sorry for the actress that the writers had to butcher her character like that both in terms of the show and in terms of historicity.
the thing is aethelred in the show could be manipulated as u can see in later episodes even though he becomes king if the ministers manipulate him into killing alfred and his mother then what? he disliked them from a very young age the boy grew up seeing his father and mother separated unlike alfred who was treated by ecbert he was waiting to be king to finish them off himself
Yeah but Alfred wasn't a better king now. In The Last Kingdom and also in reality, Alfred of that time was considered sickly but cunning and all kinds of smart. While in this show, Alfred is just sickly. The whole plot is stupid because of the Athelstan thing.
Didn't King Alfred succeeded the throne after King Athelred's death in battle? Wasn't this the historical accuracy? Or the Vikings movie had it more accurate?
Yes, and then find a nice place for Judith assuming she don't call Any assassination of me. After all Athelred is Athelwulf's eldest son, since they needed a new King, thee are no questions. Judith is the Queen, no hell way am I giving up my throne on her behalf over the country's l
It's a parallel universe where Althelred received a vision from God and said that it was God's will that Alfred be king and thus Alfred becomes king even before his eldest brother's death.
Yep but he was a younger Alfred and when he gets older, he grew his beard. I note the nobles disliked him but grew to be liking him when he defeated the Danes. He went to Rome and he was blessed by the Pope, I think he may be why he looked like a monk while he was prince, he grew to became a warrior king.
god I can't stand Judith, it's really like she doesn't even care for her other son -- REALLY seems to have a favorite I have to assume that's because Alfred's father is Athelstan. She says Ecbert favored Alfred more but pretty obvious he favored Alfred from the moment he was born -- SOLEY because he was Athelstan's child. As baby it's not like you can really tell if they will be good or not, not much to see in them. Could have just as easily given those same lessons to the other child too, but both Ecbert and Judith only cared to try and groom Alfred for this She doesn't even seem to care for Althelred at all, almost seemed to ENJOY the crown going to Alfred and to say he would be a better king. Just because of who Alfred's father is GOD AWFUL MOTHER

Funny because alfred didnt even resemble the monk in the show for all we know he was a peasants son ..to be fair judith was fucking everyone on the show lol
So is Judith not gonna age or...
Lagertha also
And Torvi....none of the women on this show age and it's super distracting
Guess it would be considered sexist if they did
Ah this sucks because I'm gonna compare Last Kingdoms's Alfred to this one and his great in that.
Awesome

Who else wanted althelred to be king
Still do
Well in real life Aethelred was king. Alfred was the youngest of all of his brothers and only came to the throne after they died.

If I had been Althelred, I would have accepted the crown and closed Judith in a convent, then ruled.
Good point. Plus you would have died leaving the crown to Alfred after the battle of Ashdown anyway.

No! Aethulwulf!
Somebody please explain to me why does Aethelred refused to be the king of Wessex?
His mother, Judith talked to him about refusing to be king in favor of his brother, Alfred.
Stupidity
He saw the wisdom of what his mother was saying? The times called for a different kind of ruler.

And Vikings didn’t have crazy long hair braids like bjorn or wear beads in their beards and it’s unlikely they ever made crutches like Ivar’s afaik.
hes the son of athelstan
All these comments about how Alfred and his actor sucks proves y'all haven't finished watching the season yet and started whining too soon.
Yep he was young then and he grew up to be a warrior king.

Why did he refuse?
