Thanks for this great video! I am, however, confused about the equivalence that you make between quantum gravity (QG) and a theory of everything (TOE). My understanding is that they are distinct. That is, a TOE seeks to unify all fundamental interactions into a single mathematical framework whereas QG “simply” seeks to describe the quantum behaviour of the gravitational field. As I’ve understood, String Theory attempts to be a TOE whereas Loop Quantum Gravity does not as it “only” seeks to quantise gravity and not unify all of the forces into one framework. Grateful for your input!
A quantum gravity theory is possibly the only missing piece of the puzzle that would help us create a theory of everything. That's why some people tend to use them interchangeably.

As usual, utterly brilliant video and very nicely presented. If I may bother you with a question I've never found any answer to but which is probably completely silly: Assuming the graviton exists and has no rest mass, it should move at c. Since it must have a very tiny amount of energy, it ought to be subject to a black hole's gravitational pull like any other particle, so how is it possible that it can actually interact with the universe? If gravitation is "simply" the curvature of space-time (and there is no quantum aspect to it) the problem disappears, but as soon as you're dealing with an object like the graviton, shouldn't the accumulated mass of the black hole - the total energy of all gravitons generated by it - keep gravitation inside the event horizon? The fact that the graviton is the vector of gravitation can't keep it from feeling its effects, can it? I have two ideas here: a) gravitons really arent't subject to gravitation - sounds wild to me - which would mean that they travel through the universe completely unperturbed, and b) quantum effects on gravitons are so enormous that the gravitons leaving the black hole's event horizon are really similar to Hawking radiation, only on a much bigger scale because they are so small and energy-poor, in which case they would have almost no trouble leaving the event horizon since they could simply "tunnel" through it. As I said, just some speculation on my part and probably stupid but I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Keep up the good work!
Or more likely we could have the explanation of why we will never have warp drive. But your scenario is way cooler :) If I understand the physics correctly, it is special relativity that dictates the speed of light limit. Special relativity was successfully carried into general relativity (via Lorentz transformation conformity), and likewise into quantum mechanics (beginning with the Dirac equation.) So it seems that this speed limit is not part of what keeps QM and GR from being unified. In short: the speed of light limit is sadly likely to be part of any future unified theory.
@@michaeldamolsen What dictates the speed of light is E=MC2. Any electromagnetic waves that travel faster than the speed of light are turned into mass and a tiny bit of heat. Special relativity has zero to do with it.

But E(nergy) = M(ass) x C(onstant of the speed of light) 2(squared) means that energy can become mass and mass can become energy. And a very small amount of mass can become a huge amount of energy as proven with the first atomic bomb. This all magic happens at the speed of light. So any energy that travels faster than light becomes mass, dictating the speed of light and how fast it can travel. I didn't find any humor in that, but I'm really glad that you did.
You said that every paradigm shift in physics led to new technologies. But general relativity barely did(GPS), and quantum field theory didn't, so there is chance that quantum gravity will be technologically useless, only providing facts about the universe. It seems to me that this problem requires difficult experiments. If I'm a theoretical physicist I can't come up with a new theory in 5 minutes because when I check the math it will be obvious that it doesn't work. So on a rare occasion when I would come up with a new theory, and develop it, in the end you need an experiment to confirm it. So in the end I don't know if my theory is scientific because I don't know if it's falsifiable. Now I've probably wasted 5 years on a theory that can't be tested with current experiments. So what are we doing? Should we continue blindly creating theories and hope one of them is falsifiable AND CORRECT at the same time? Is this a problem within theoretical physics or experimental physics? If we can't make experiments that test these theories with current technology, why even try to solve quantum gravity? String theory might as well be correct but we can't currently make an experiment to test it. This is all my opinion on the problem and these are the reasons why I chose not to become a theoretical physicist.
We already have a proper core model of Quantum Gravity, namely ER=EPR, which states a duality of essential and central features of Quantum theory on the one hand and GR on the other. These features are quantum entanglement a most core feature of QT and wormholes a core feature of GR. Such a duality means that these seemingly unrelated features are actually just two manifestations of one and the same phenomenon. I.e. this duality is a proper model of Quantum Gravity!

What I want to know is, what were the predecessors to general relativity and quantum theory, and what were the breakthroughs that lead them to replace the explanations of the macro and micro scale of the universe?
The predecessor to General Relativity was Newton's equation of gravity. While still applicable, it fails to describe how gravity interacts with light. Quantum theory was developed to solve the issue of stable electron orbits. The idea previous was that electrons could have any energy level in an atom, but this also meant that the negatively charged electron would be attracted to, and spiral into, the positively charged nucleus and annihilate the atom in something like 10^-30 seconds. Obviously, they don't do this, and so Max Planck hypothesized that an electron could only have a certain set amount of energy, instead of any possible value.

I can answer your questions. Its not a matter of one or the other of our fundamental theories being wrong, QM or GR. Its more the case that the context isnt quite correct. In short.... Relativity theory is defined by parameters of time. But consider from where parameters of time are derived? We derive measures of time by measuring atomic activity, pulse rate of an atom. And here's the meaningful aspect you need to focus upon "atomic forces generate atomic activity". There is a connection between atomic forces and the parameter of time, by virtue that time is derived from activity which is generated by atomic forces. Time is literally a derivative of force. Realize this and you take a step towards TOE Time dilation is defined by an altered rate of atomic activity. And Atomic activity being generated by atomic forces, an altered rate of atomic activity is an indication that atomic forces are not a constant, they are variant. This is the origin of time dilation effect "variable atomic force" and atomic forces, or fundamental force is within the QM realm. Think of it within terms that atomic forces are the engines of the atom, that drive its processes and agencies. Just like a car engine delivers force that drives the car. Think of it within these terms and the relationship between time and force unifies QM and GR. Time is a derivative of force, because measure of time is derived from force generated activity. These are the facts and the all important context that allows our fundamental theories to be advanced. Guys, Gals. Why is this so hard? Atomic forces generate atomic mass, and atomic mass is the property of matter that drives gravitational acceleration. How else can this be interpreted other than "atomic forces possess the agency that expressed gravitational acceleration.Gravitational acceleration is generated by atomic forces. Strong force is the engine that drives gravitational acceleration. Atomic forces and the effects of gravity, they are one and the same thing. Literally. I mean, nobody can form an argument to disagree with this, but for some reason they still have no use for this reasoning. How can that be? Try it. Try to find the error of my reasoning? Its bullet proof. Its so obvious that I have no idea why others haven't realized it before now.

Great video. I think it’s time to question quantum field theory. I’m not sold on the virtual particle exchange model at all - it might be a useful model but I don’t think it’s what is happening. That way we can scrap the need for a graviton and thereby quantum gravity. Light is not quantised other than it’s generation and destruction which is related to quantum events that naturally arise from a quantum energy structure within matter. If light is otherwise analog, then gravity is also analog. To me GR is the correct model - it just feels right - if we didn’t have QFT would we need to quantise it? By the way I think the pixel nature of space time is a nice concept- it’s like the fundamental resolution of the simulation we might be in - they just didn’t figure we’d get to the resolution limit without destroying ourselves (again) in the process. It’s fascinating that we might never unpack everything …
Thank you for explaining loop quantity gravity in a way that finally made sense to me. As a casual physics fan quantum units of space/time is kind of how I interpret quantum mechanics which now seems to me what loop quantum gravity is trying to interpret which makes me think it’s an awful name. Coordinate quantum gravity or plankian quantum gravity would probably be a better name for it
We lack the ability to test things to a certain level. It's so difficult and expensive for scientist to create instruments capable of detecting a measurable difference between the very weak and the strong forces.
I don't really know but I'm prty sure that if anything gets smaller than the plank constant it turns in to a black hole so there is no way to really know
Does quantum gravity come from energy trying to equalise with other energy at a distance? Like heat transferance but with energy. like its gonna come nearer until it meets at the same energy level and if it can't it will change into another state like from a solid to liquid and then separate as a gas If it is matter or enter into another state beyond a gas If it can't handle the amount of energy its recieving? However singularities found in black holes and the Big Bang unifies the four forces of nature and so all four forces of nature have a force carrying particle and detecting the existence of graviton in gravitational waves sort of pockets of gravitational energy moving at light speed is incredibly challenging. The three forces are strong. Gravity is by far the weakest force because it takes a whole planet to keep you down and takes massive objects like stars and planets for it to have an effect on the fabric of space time. Physicists also look for clues for the existence of quantum gravity in the cosmic microwave background ( CMB ) data. General relativity was published in 1915 and quantum field theory was published in 1970’s and so the fact we haven’t yet United the two theories tells you just how complicated the task is. It is incredible to think we would need to build a particle accelerator the size of the solar system and particle detectors the size of Jupiter to discover this theory. That collision of particles at that high energy would likely create a black hole due to their combined masses collapsing in on themselves at the point of collision.
Gravitons expands from a point, at the speed of light. Gravitons are what wave function solutions are describing. I'll check back in 200 years to see if you figured it out!
Since the general theory of relativity and Einstein's field equations are precise when looking for quantum gravity, do you not understand that Einstein's theory of gravity says that gravity is not a force like the nuclear force or the electromagnetic force, but rather it is the geometry of the structure of space-time?
What if QFT and quantum gravity are "emergent properties" of another theory....working backwards how do you predict what set of mathematical relationships will result in the emergence of QFT and quantum gravity.
This video doesn't mention Stochastic Electrodynamics (SED) as a possible solution as well. It is still being actively studied and can also unify macro and micro realities.
I like to tell, what I think about: in this video comes, gravity becomes bigger, with large objects. I think, simply, because the gravity is only the curvature of space-time, and when the object is bigger, the curvature of space-time becomes bigger, that's why the amount of gravity directly proportional with the size of the object.
Im pretty certain we are trying to overcomplicate black holes because our lack of understanding of time. Physicsts talk often about space matter and then theory and math. But honestly the fact all we have to say about time is that its a linear path for matter to move in space is just rudamentary. From graphs to maths to ideas and observations. All we know about time is that it has space. When space bends so does time. And thats basically it. We estimated the plank length of time. Donno if thats just fiction or not. I think its time to abandon the space ship and think about time in a finer way.
So is it that in a Black Hole Space/Time is Curved to Infinity, could it be that space/tme is just Curved More than the speed of Light, which looks infinite to Us?

I thought the issue was something like, it's impossible to figure out how spacetime is curved by a particle in a superposition, or an entangled particle, or a particle whose position or momentum has a degree of uncertainty... or it's impossible to calculate the field equations as seen by a relativistic observer... or some such. I'd love to hear more detail about what the actual incompatibilities are. I don't think it's just how weak gravity is that makes the theories not mesh well.

When I see Chaos Theory almost spanning out its reach in all three domains of physics, I just cant help but think about the underrated relevance of what that subject might be to us and the Universe itself.
I'd say it's more just fundamentally emergent for *any* complex system with feedback between cause and effect. It does seem, though (as far as I can tell as an interested layman) that a huge amount of quantum field theory's implications arise from chaotic effects leading to emergent generalities at larger scales.

I’d put my bets for a TOE on pilot wave theory, where space-time is the fabric which is ‘waving’, thereby linking QM and GR at the base. John Bush and coworkers are unraveling things step by step.

Thanks for this great video! I am, however, confused about the equivalence that you make between quantum gravity (QG) and a theory of everything (TOE). My understanding is that they are distinct. That is, a TOE seeks to unify all fundamental interactions into a single mathematical framework whereas QG “simply” seeks to describe the quantum behaviour of the gravitational field. As I’ve understood, String Theory attempts to be a TOE whereas Loop Quantum Gravity does not as it “only” seeks to quantise gravity and not unify all of the forces into one framework. Grateful for your input!
A quantum gravity theory is possibly the only missing piece of the puzzle that would help us create a theory of everything. That's why some people tend to use them interchangeably.

4:35 CERN isn't the particle accelerator, it's the organization who constructed the accelerator. The accelerator itself is called the LHC, Large Hadron Collider. Therefore the statement _need a CERN the size of the solar system_ is incorrect. Just thought I'd point this out. Great video!

Mathematically speaking, QFT and GR are among the most beautiful theories ever devised. To find a true Quantum Theory of Gravity (i.e. one that’s subject to falsifiability and experimental verifications) we need a radically new theory that’s even more BEAUTIFUL. And that’s no easy feat. It’s not about brut force, it’s all about the beauty of the underlying ideas, and the candy-like mathematics that falls out of them.

Incredible, clear explanation. Although I've read some books about quantum gravity and Known it for quite some time, you can give a simple explanation to someone who doesn't know anything about quantum mechanics or general relativity.
Funny thing about figuring out how everything works. We loved doing it so much the 1st time. We built a library in Alexandria Egypt. To hold all the knowledge we had gained. In the Ancient world.

If the fine structure constant varies over interstellar distances or distances in time, then the planck length and planck time vary by the behavior of differences in the fine structure constant. The fine structure component therefore is the graviton.

As usual, utterly brilliant video and very nicely presented. If I may bother you with a question I've never found any answer to but which is probably completely silly: Assuming the graviton exists and has no rest mass, it should move at c. Since it must have a very tiny amount of energy, it ought to be subject to a black hole's gravitational pull like any other particle, so how is it possible that it can actually interact with the universe? If gravitation is "simply" the curvature of space-time (and there is no quantum aspect to it) the problem disappears, but as soon as you're dealing with an object like the graviton, shouldn't the accumulated mass of the black hole - the total energy of all gravitons generated by it - keep gravitation inside the event horizon? The fact that the graviton is the vector of gravitation can't keep it from feeling its effects, can it? I have two ideas here: a) gravitons really arent't subject to gravitation - sounds wild to me - which would mean that they travel through the universe completely unperturbed, and b) quantum effects on gravitons are so enormous that the gravitons leaving the black hole's event horizon are really similar to Hawking radiation, only on a much bigger scale because they are so small and energy-poor, in which case they would have almost no trouble leaving the event horizon since they could simply "tunnel" through it. As I said, just some speculation on my part and probably stupid but I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Keep up the good work!

If I understand the physics correctly, it is special relativity that dictates the speed of light limit. Special relativity was successfully carried into general relativity (via Lorentz transformation conformity), and likewise into quantum mechanics (beginning with the Dirac equation.) So it seems that this speed limit is not part of what keeps QM and GR from being unified. In short: the speed of light limit is sadly likely to be part of any future unified theory.

@@michaeldamolsen What dictates the speed of light is E=MC2. Any electromagnetic waves that travel faster than the speed of light are turned into mass and a tiny bit of heat. Special relativity has zero to do with it.

But E(nergy) = M(ass) x C(onstant of the speed of light) 2(squared) means that energy can become mass and mass can become energy. And a very small amount of mass can become a huge amount of energy as proven with the first atomic bomb. This all magic happens at the speed of light. So any energy that travels faster than light becomes mass, dictating the speed of light and how fast it can travel. I didn't find any humor in that, but I'm really glad that you did.

You said that every paradigm shift in physics led to new technologies. But general relativity barely did(GPS), and quantum field theory didn't, so there is chance that quantum gravity will be technologically useless, only providing facts about the universe. It seems to me that this problem requires difficult experiments. If I'm a theoretical physicist I can't come up with a new theory in 5 minutes because when I check the math it will be obvious that it doesn't work. So on a rare occasion when I would come up with a new theory, and develop it, in the end you need an experiment to confirm it. So in the end I don't know if my theory is scientific because I don't know if it's falsifiable. Now I've probably wasted 5 years on a theory that can't be tested with current experiments. So what are we doing? Should we continue blindly creating theories and hope one of them is falsifiable AND CORRECT at the same time? Is this a problem within theoretical physics or experimental physics? If we can't make experiments that test these theories with current technology, why even try to solve quantum gravity? String theory might as well be correct but we can't currently make an experiment to test it. This is all my opinion on the problem and these are the reasons why I chose not to become a theoretical physicist.

Such a duality means that these seemingly unrelated features are actually just two manifestations of one and the same phenomenon. I.e. this duality is a proper model of Quantum Gravity!

Does it make sense that a gauge theory of gravity in flat space would be easier to quantize?
What I want to know is, what were the predecessors to general relativity and quantum theory, and what were the breakthroughs that lead them to replace the explanations of the macro and micro scale of the universe?
The predecessor to General Relativity was Newton's equation of gravity. While still applicable, it fails to describe how gravity interacts with light.
Quantum theory was developed to solve the issue of stable electron orbits. The idea previous was that electrons could have any energy level in an atom, but this also meant that the negatively charged electron would be attracted to, and spiral into, the positively charged nucleus and annihilate the atom in something like 10^-30 seconds. Obviously, they don't do this, and so Max Planck hypothesized that an electron could only have a certain set amount of energy, instead of any possible value.

I can answer your questions. Its not a matter of one or the other of our fundamental theories being wrong, QM or GR. Its more the case that the context isnt quite correct.
In short....
Relativity theory is defined by parameters of time. But consider from where parameters of time are derived? We derive measures of time by measuring atomic activity, pulse rate of an atom. And here's the meaningful aspect you need to focus upon "atomic forces generate atomic activity".
There is a connection between atomic forces and the parameter of time, by virtue that time is derived from activity which is generated by atomic forces. Time is literally a derivative of force. Realize this and you take a step towards TOE
Time dilation is defined by an altered rate of atomic activity. And Atomic activity being generated by atomic forces, an altered rate of atomic activity is an indication that atomic forces are not a constant, they are variant. This is the origin of time dilation effect "variable atomic force" and atomic forces, or fundamental force is within the QM realm. Think of it within terms that atomic forces are the engines of the atom, that drive its processes and agencies. Just like a car engine delivers force that drives the car. Think of it within these terms and the relationship between time and force unifies QM and GR.
Time is a derivative of force, because measure of time is derived from force generated activity. These are the facts and the all important context that allows our fundamental theories to be advanced.
Guys, Gals. Why is this so hard? Atomic forces generate atomic mass, and atomic mass is the property of matter that drives gravitational acceleration. How else can this be interpreted other than "atomic forces possess the agency that expressed gravitational acceleration.Gravitational acceleration is generated by atomic forces. Strong force is the engine that drives gravitational acceleration. Atomic forces and the effects of gravity, they are one and the same thing. Literally. I mean, nobody can form an argument to disagree with this, but for some reason they still have no use for this reasoning. How can that be?

I said this on another video, but will repeat it here--while that SOUNDS preposterous initially, I would argue that if it's even POSSIBLE, we have every reason to undertake that effort notwithstanding its mind-boggling scale--we LITERALLY have nothing better to do in the potentially trillions of years we might as a species (or, frankly, even as individuals doesn't seem too outlandish, given we're contemplating technology that would enable such a megastructure not just being theoretically possible, but within our actual knowledge and ability) than to try to understand the reality in which find ourselves.

Like to the experimental results I mean--would we still be able to learn what we needed to about gravity/the universe's workings, notwithstanding (and/or, because perhaps) the "black-hole-ification" of our experiment? Great video. I think it’s time to question quantum field theory. I’m not sold on the virtual particle exchange model at all - it might be a useful model but I don’t think it’s what is happening. That way we can scrap the need for a graviton and thereby quantum gravity. Light is not quantised other than it’s generation and destruction which is related to quantum events that naturally arise from a quantum energy structure within matter. If light is otherwise analog, then gravity is also analog. To me GR is the correct model - it just feels right - if we didn’t have QFT would we need to quantise it? By the way I think the pixel nature of space time is a nice concept- it’s like the fundamental resolution of the simulation we might be in - they just didn’t figure we’d get to the resolution limit without destroying ourselves (again) in the process. It’s fascinating that we might never unpack everything …

As a casual physics fan quantum units of space/time is kind of how I interpret quantum mechanics which now seems to me what loop quantum gravity is trying to interpret which makes me think it’s an awful name. Coordinate quantum gravity or plankian quantum gravity would probably be a better name for it

Does quantum gravity come from energy trying to equalise with other energy at a distance? Like heat transferance but with energy. like its gonna come nearer until it meets at the same energy level and if it can't it will change into another state like from a solid to liquid and then separate as a gas If it is matter or enter into another state beyond a gas If it can't handle the amount of energy its recieving? So they have the same energy levels?
In modern physics - general relativity describes gravity with high precision and quantum physics describes the behaviour of subatomic particles and atoms with high precision using the three forces - electromagneticm, strong and weak nuclear forces. So both theories describe the Universe independently with a high degree of accuracy.
However singularities found in black holes and the Big Bang unifies the four forces of nature and so all four forces of nature have a force carrying particle and detecting the existence of graviton in gravitational waves sort of pockets of gravitational energy moving at light speed is incredibly challenging.
The three forces are strong. Gravity is by far the weakest force because it takes a whole planet to keep you down and takes massive objects like stars and planets for it to have an effect on the fabric of space time.
Physicists also look for clues for the existence of quantum gravity in the cosmic microwave background ( CMB ) data.
General relativity was published in 1915 and quantum field theory was published in 1970’s and so the fact we haven’t yet United the two theories tells you just how complicated the task is.
It is incredible to think we would need to build a particle accelerator the size of the solar system and particle detectors the size of Jupiter to discover this theory. That collision of particles at that high energy would likely create a black hole due to their combined masses collapsing in on themselves at the point of collision.
Gravitons expands from a point, at the speed of light. Gravitons are what wave function solutions are describing. I'll check back in 200 years to see if you figured it out!

I think, simply, because the gravity is only the curvature of space-time, and when the object is bigger, the curvature of space-time becomes bigger, that's why the amount of gravity directly proportional with the size of the object.

Im pretty certain we are trying to overcomplicate black holes because our lack of understanding of time. Physicsts talk often about space matter and then theory and math. But honestly the fact all we have to say about time is that its a linear path for matter to move in space is just rudamentary.
From graphs to maths to ideas and observations. All we know about time is that it has space. When space bends so does time. And thats basically it. We estimated the plank length of time. Donno if thats just fiction or not.
I think its time to abandon the space ship and think about time in a finer way.
So is it that in a Black Hole Space/Time is Curved to Infinity, could it be that space/tme is just Curved More than the speed of Light, which looks infinite to Us?

I thought the issue was something like, it's impossible to figure out how spacetime is curved by a particle in a superposition, or an entangled particle, or a particle whose position or momentum has a degree of uncertainty... or it's impossible to calculate the field equations as seen by a relativistic observer... or some such. I'd love to hear more detail about what the actual incompatibilities are. I don't think it's just how weak gravity is that makes the theories not mesh well.
