  • This is a MIDI performance I made recreating Robert Henry's live performance of this study from memory. Because it is from memory, some details might have been missed, but I tried to match what I heard as much as possible and the details that stuck out to me the most are definitely included here.
The live recording was from his website, roberthenry.org, but was lost ever since Flash player on browsers went defunct. It is worth noting that, yes, the recording on his website stopped where I stopped the video, unfortunately. Furthermore, yes, all of these details (including the octaves!) were played with the crescendos and clarity that the MIDI performance here has. I managed to save some recordings of his (specifically Chopin-Godowsky Study No.36: • Chopin-Godowsky - Stud... and Study No.42: • Chopin-Godowsky - Stud... ), but the rest are lost.
The lost performances are Study No.4 after Op.10 No.2 (only detail of note was a quick arpeggiation before the 2nd beat of measure 32), Study No.15 after Op.10 No.7, Study No.17 after Op.10 No.9 (only detail of note was that the piece ended in C-sharp major, rather than minor), and Study No.24 after Op.25 No.1. While Hamelin's performances of the Chopin-Godowsky studies excited me to no end back then (damn near 10 years ago now), Henry's performances made me obsessed - and I hope the reasons why are obvious in this video, and the other two I have linked in this description. He, intentionally or otherwise, showed that these studies are not as rigid as people make them out to be. I love when a performer showcases their character in their performances, and the changes he made to Godowsky's writing, albeit small, get increasingly more gorgeous for me with each new listen.

On his Facebook page, he’s unfortunately stated that his skills aren’t really up to snuff anymore haha. A real, real shame. From memory, I considered his Chopin-Godowsky performances to be the best in existence at while they were around.

@@Varooooooom Even further back, the full version of this etude was on the website, so it got truncated when the webpage was updated at one point. I think it's a great loss too... his Op 1 n. 1 is entirely unmatched. A shame.

@@denisst-onge9914 God, I never knew that!! Seriously such a shame. Hopefully someday someone can record these studies as brilliantly as Henry did. One of my biggest regrets in life is not recording all of those flash recordings when I had the chance. It’s a miracle that I had the foresight to hold onto the Op.25 No.11 and Op.25 No.6.

      Hello, Everyone!
I appreciate the flattery in uploading this particular performance. However, this is not me. If the OP wants to contact me, I’d be happy to send him some of my actual performances.
Also, I’d consider making a recording of these. Skills are still there. ;)
