    This was really awesome. So easy to follow for those of us still a little scared of php files etc. In most tutorials you half way into it and realize something is missing. But here it was just play and pause and follow along. Thanks a million !

    Thank Bjorn as always.
    I understand why you asked the situation for Multisite, because I regret so much to have switched. I have 2 sites to build for my friends, so I set Multisite at my local wamp. But when the web finished, it's much more painful to upload to domain host server than migrating only one site.
    I am thinking to break to 2 independent sites. Maybe reinstall Wordpress? Whoever knows a easier way pls rescue me.

    • @wplearninglab

      +Amy Cheng Hi Amy, I haven't tried this before, but you may be able to migrate your multisite's to individual sites. It would be a bit of a process and take some experimenting, but each site on your multisite has its own tables in the database. It also shares some core WordPress tables with all the other sites in the multisite. Each site also has its own folder containing the plugins, themes and uploads.
      I'm willing to bet if you setup a regular WordPress site you can import the relevant tables and the folders and have it independent. Then you would lose any of your work.

    Hey thanks for making this. So I got stuck pretty quick. I added and activated WordPress MU Domain Mapping, but my settings don't have the options that you show. Instead, they consist of general, writing, reading, discussion, media, permalinks, maintenance mode, page builder. I'm still very new so I'm sure it's something quite basic. Thanks so much.

I dont need the domain mapping plugin anymore. However I didn't know and watched your video and installed it. Do I have to deactivate it now? And remove the sunrise folder and code?

    If you have an existing site you are ranking and the client wants the domain name changed is this the best practice to use? Or should you duplicate or migrate site to new domain? How does each option affect seo efforts?

    • @wplearninglab
      @wplearninglab  6 років тому

      Hi Gaynor,
      If it's not a multisite already then I would keep it as an independent website.
      Use this tutorial to migrate it manually: ua-cam.com/video/ZJED0dqEx-M/v-deo.html
      or use this one to migrate using a plugin: ua-cam.com/video/SkjAxA48SA8/v-deo.html&index=28&list=PLlgSvQqMfii7aN-XeBQ1qdFYsL892rAw7
      Then make sure 301 redirect all the old URLs to the new URLs using the .htaccess file on the old domain. Here's a tutorial for that: ua-cam.com/video/xgWPIu8hnG8/v-deo.html&index=7&list=PLlgSvQqMfii77WdUkg680kIiFCcKKrI-H
      I hope that helps and thanks for watching!

    Thank you very much for your tutorial. One problem I am facing though is that all the content url's in the dom and newly uploaded files etc., is still the old url, and not the new mapped. Any ideas about how this could be resolved? I could do a search&replace, but for the future? :)

    • @wplearninglab
      @wplearninglab  7 років тому

      If the domain mapping worked successfully then all the URLs should be the new on whenever you upload new content.
      To search & replace the old URL you can use a tool like this one to do it manually outside of WordPress: interconnectit.com/products/search-and-replace-for-wordpress-databases/
      Or you could try a plugin like this one: en-ca.wordpress.org/plugins/search-and-replace/
      I haven't used either but they appear to do what you need.

    • @wplearninglab
      @wplearninglab  6 років тому

      Hi Andrew,
      I haven't tried it, but my feeling is that it should work out of the box. HTTPS is simply a redirect, which is essentially what domain mapping is as well. The worst that would happen is a redirect loop is created and the site would go down until the loop is stopped...but I don't think that would happen for what you're describing.

    Hi, i might be being dumb here.. I have set up everything and it all works great! But how do I now map a domain to my original domain, i can map domains to new sites no problem but my original site is where I now want to map a domain.

    • @wplearninglab
      @wplearninglab  5 років тому

      That can be a bit confusing. The original domain for the main site (or the super-admin site) is added to your hosting account as an add-on domain. When you're WP Multisite was first installed you would have used that add-on domain to put the site on. Then your site will open at that URL.
      I hope that helps :) Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks for watching!

      WordPress Tutorials - WPLearningLab Hi, thanks for your reply. Look forward to the new video. This has confused me. I run a dedicated server and have created a new cPanel account for using with a Multisite installation. My host supported said I could just added a dummy domain when creating the new cPanel account. I then had difficulty installing Wordpress as I couldn't just enter a url for the install. The support guys said I needed to add a host file on my Mac. That worked so that I could install but then had an issue when creating site and then pointing the dns to my server, it would always pull up the error page in cpanel. Do you have to do something within cpanel so that the domains get mapped correctly to the Multisite sub site? The domain I was trying to get working is www.design-web-photography.com

    • @wplearninglab
      @wplearninglab  5 років тому +3

      Yes, that's right. You can have as many unique domains and themes as you want. Visitors to those sites won't even know the sites are part of a WP multisite.
      WordPress.com is a WP multisite install and they run millions of sites on the same database. Anyone can buy a unique domain and use it for their site on WordPress.com.
      I hope that helps and thanks for watching!

    • @wplearninglab

      Have you tried what I presented in the tutorial? If you did, but it didn't work right Hostgator may require a wildcard subdomain to be created. Which is just a subdomain of *.

    • @David_Mash
      @David_Mash 6 років тому

      I have added the wildcard of my network site but as soon as I add the url to domain mapping primary url, I get a loop. I have my domains in hostgator redirecting to the subdirectory page of my network site. Is there a better way to do this without getting into a loading loop?

    I think I should be usin multi-site for my MDBLE.mobi site. I have seen the option during installation and thought I had selected multi site but did not know a plugin was needed.
    How do I check if my install is multi site? If not, how do I convert an existing install to multi site?
    Also, I'm on a GoDaddy VPS and need suggestions for CentOS, Apache and WHM software versions and configuration. Do you have videos for these topics? If not please help.

    • @wplearninglab
      @wplearninglab  7 років тому

      Hi Peter,
      If you are running a multisite you will see a "My Sites" link in the very top left of your WordPress admin. If that's not there, then you probably don't Multisite Installed.
      You can convert an existing site to a multisite by following the instructions in this video starting at 4 minutes and 55 seconds: ua-cam.com/video/CpFGRCj2R9g/v-deo.html&list=PLlgSvQqMfii644KDLQqh0Zt0hPhmmzIem&t=295
      The video we're commenting on (domain mapping for multisite) isn't required for a multisite. This plugin is designed to allow you to use unique domains for each site. On a regular multisite you can create as many subdomains or subdirectories as you need, just no unique domain names.
      The GoDaddy VPS doesn't come pre-loaded with a Apache, MySQL, and WHM so that you can run your site?

      There are three main sites: a LLC, a Hosting site for Mobile Learning and my Dissertation research site. Currently using a custom theme for my research project that can be used as the main mobile learning theme.

    • @wplearninglab
      @wplearninglab  6 років тому

      +RNRMEDIAGROUP What a coincidence! I just recorded a tutorial for that a few days ago. It's still in editing, but I can outline the process for you.
      If you view the source of any page on your site and search for it will turn up all the elements that aren't being loaded securely.
      These are usually things like images and JS and CSS files.
      Here's what I do to fix it:
      1. Install the Really Simple SSL plugin and activate it. Backup your site and database first if you want to be extra safe.
      That should fix some of the issues and sometimes all of them...
      2. If you don't have the green padlock after activating the plugin, view the site source and search for again.
      It will likely only turn up only images this time.
      Find those images in your Wordpress admin and either change the to manually or reload the images from your media library.
      These images may be found in the theme options for your theme, in posts and pages, in widgets, hard coded in the template files, etc.
      The bottom line is if you change all instances of to you'll have the green padlock.
      I hope that helps, let me know how it goes!

      It sounds like you need to reset your .htaccess file.
      Go to Settings then Permalinks. Scroll to the bottom of the Permalinks page without making any changes and click on Save. That should fix the redirect issue.

      Hi Loys,
      In the latest versions of WordPress you don't need the domain mapping plugin any more. There's more info about it here: codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Multisite_Domain_Mapping
      I'm in the process of creating a new tutorial for the updated method.

      Hi Herman,
      That is possible only if you set up a multisite to use subdomains.
      You cannot do this with regular WP installs without some very advanced coding.

      @wplearninglab  5 років тому +1

      I do have a tutorial for that, here it is: ua-cam.com/video/CpFGRCj2R9g/v-deo.html
      With a WordPress multisite you can have as many WordPress as you want running on one database.
      Each site does not have its own folder in the phpMyAdmin because each folder is a new database.
      Each new site in the multisite setup has it databse tables added to a multisite database.
      I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any further questions :)

      The first thing I would try is resetting the permalinks on the main multi-site and on the mapped site. Go to Settings then Permalinks. Scroll to the bottom of the Permalinks page without making any changes and click on Save. Do that on both sites and see if that fixes the issue.

      Greetings to you, i must confess that my sites are healthy today because of your tutorials.
      I did reset the permalinks on each sites but the situation still persists. I saw one of your videos where you thought about solving a 301 redirect using the .htaccess in the web root folder.
      I'm also thinking if i can force each sub-domain to use HTTPS using this lines of code in the .htaccess
      RewriteEngine On
      RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^sub-domain-that-redirects\.com [NC]
      RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80
      RewriteRule ^(.*)$ www.subdomain-that-redirects.com/$1 [R,L]
      This code will be repeated for each subdomain
      Please remember that the subdomains won't redirect if they have https included in the domain name but will redirects to primary domain if you use subdomain without https
      Please what do you think about is it workable, can use it or its all crap :)
      Please suggest a workable solution
      Thank you very much
