Another great video in the can, ScoutCrafter! 👍🏻 Always nice to pick up some free shop supplies on the Poor Man’s Flea Market circuit. Sure beats having to pay for them. 😅 The recessed ceiling light turned out nice. Looking forward to seeing the “Lighting Department” in the attic one day in a video.
You scored, one man’s trash was a gold mine for you. I would have dug them out to. Your vintage lights are similar to some commercial ones I use to service. They were spring loaded and a pain to open. They were in older bank enterences. Thank You
Great video. I used to work for the city of Vancouver, at the dump, as a mechanic. I would go out to the public drop off every morning before my shift, drink a coffee and peruse the items dropped off the afternoon before. For almost 3 years, I brought a treasure home every day. From a 3 pound ingot of pure nickel to a box full of iron worker spud wrenches, to a plane propeller that engaged some greenery lol. It was great. I couldn’t believe the wastefulness. I still look through every scrap metal bin I come across. Cheers. Always love your content.
My old boss used to take van loads of debris from construction/remodeling jobs to the Darien dump (transfer station). Being a wealthy suburb people would throw out practically new furniture. The town employee who ran the place had a side hustle. He had a semi trailer parked on the side and would load any decent furniture in the trailer. When the trailer was full he would have it brought down south where a partner ran a used furniture store. If you had spotted something nice being throw out by someone else you either had to be very fast or hope the supervisor didn’t see you.
Great story about the clock seller, Scout! Your Poor Mans Flea Market walks have me on the lookout for folks in my area who are moving. Cool recessed light finds. It cleaned up very nice. Your mouse friend looks very healthy. 😃👍
Another interesting and entertaining video. If you want to significantly increase the light output of any enclosed fixture for the same wattage, spray paint the interior the brightest white you can find. I discovered that about 50 yrs ago when repairing lights on trailer where reflective surfaces had rusted and plating peeled. Cleaned the rust and painted them, on testing discovered the lights were brighter than original. Just a thought to keep in mind.
Good stuff Bud!! I sold a Hit and Miss Engine on Ebay and my Buddy Blind John bought it, he didn't know it was me selling it!! He overpaid about $450 but I did deliver it to him!!☻
I really appreciate the rescue work you do to save for reuse or repurpose perfectly good products and materials you find on your walks. I cringe when I think of all the still very useful stuff that goes to the NY dump. Much could be donated to charities or second hand stores. Regarding Ebay purchases, trying to get help for a broken purchase was impossible for my wife. Seller didn't insure some very poorly packaged porcelain. It arrived broken, and seller couldn't care less. The Paypal claim site was so confusing and frustrating as to be unusable. So she was out $265 which is a great deal for us. All you can do is complain to Ebay. So your advice about only using 100 percent sellers is important.
Pat- eBay does a pretty good job at trying to protect buyers but there are always some bad sellers that slip through the cracks. I bought a glass gas meter on eBay and the dopey seller put it in a box with no padding! Of course it came here broken and I got a refund. 🫣😂👍
For cleaning sanding belts, I have a belt cleaner bar just like yours but discovered that modern wine bottle corks use a similar (or same) material that cleans sanding belts just as good. I use a cork once and throw it away because it gets worn too close to my fingers. One wine cork cleans my 4x24 belt sander, so you see that a small drum sander could be cleaned many times with one stopper. If you are not a wine drinker, find a friend that is and get them to just save their corks. I have a small box full and have not used my sanding belt cleaner bar in forever. I have also asked my friends to discontinue saving their corks for me since I have a sufficient supply for some time.
I also like old light fixtures. I am an electrician that works maintenance in a public school district. Before we switched all campuses to LED I was able to harvest some vintage fixtures. One of which is a 3 sided glass exit sign that I rewired and hung in my foyer. I was also fortunate enough to find several packages of incandescent bulbs stashed in the back of a janitor closet.
Wow Holly S. I never knew this cleans Sand paper dam. I just got back from 106 a lady's Hood blew up onto her windshield,She was shook up but we got the hood down locked in. My Father n laws House has em I'm so glad u showed how to clean em,I didn't know exactly the operation of em so appreciate ur channel. Yes I'm thinking about getting the premium you tube.
The only problem with those recessed fixtures was heat buildup. It caused a lot of fires.people would put higher wattage lamps in them .Eventually they put thermal cutouts in them which cured that.same with the early fluorescent fixtures, eventually the newer ballast had thermal protection and then finally codes required clearance around the fixture.
Wow that clock story was fantastic 👍 and definitely remember those light fixtures but now I am definitely going to keep a keen watch for them at those prices 👍
Thanks John, great stash of consumables there on the PMF always good to stock up on consumables ! It really made me chuckle your memories of Great Eastern, you may have seen Robs video ( Weekend Shed Head) about the demise of Homebase here in the Uk - we used to regularly go to Homebase particularly when they did Friday evening discount events and the "kids" still talk about waiting for me while playing in the lighting and doorbell section and then travelling home with timber overhead or boards restricting foot space in the back of the car ! 🤣
I have rubber sticks at both sanders majes the belts last so much longer cleaning as they clog. Sure is a small world 😁😁.. the light cleaned up very nice brings back memories
Hi John. I sure do remember those lights. Had those in a friends remodeled basement. That was a great find 😮. Great job on that one. Looks you could use it again. Have a great week. 👍👍❤...
8:10 as for sanding belt cleaner, I use old sneakers! The foam between the rubber bottom and the soft foot pads works (based on my testing ) better than those cleaning sticks. They do not last as long, but for the money (free!) worth it! I just peel the foam and rubber as one unit, off the cloth of the sneaker, then just use it as you indicated!
I used to use the aerosol shown to spray Redex fuel additive directly into the air intake of a very elderly car. It broke down the soot and carbon build up which emerged from the exhaust as clouds of black smoke. Fun days running a clonker !!
Old lights have so much more character then modern…BTW…have you ever tried getting some tin foil roll it up to the size of a golf ball dip in water or oil and rub it on rusted chrome …you may be shocked at the outcome…love that PMFM…🖖
that prevail sprayer reminds me of the reusable sprayer i made from a old fire extinguisher i just removed the gauge and added a shader valve pipe fitting and modified the tip to except a little sprayer straw and now i can use bulk break clean and save money
I posted this separate, as I'm not sure UA-cam will allow a link. Pocket83 just did a video on "infinite" drum sanders. Might be a good use of old belts! ua-cam.com/video/eC-BPtNnBn8/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
I have one of those recessed lights over my kitchen sink. I think that style light is popular now because all of the Mid-century modern designs are very popular. People are renovating their homes to look like the aesthetic we like! People want to put their capes and ranches that were redone in the 80s or 90s back to the original look, especially the kitchens and baths. I loved when all the stores had the light and ceiling fan displays. I used to get yelled at in Channel for ringing the door bells! Have you ever considered ringing that guy’s doorbell and getting first crack at the stuff he has?
Great video! AND...Back in the 70s, my mother was a manager at the Pergament's on Old Country Rd in Westbury! I hadn't hrard that name in decades! The recessed lights are exactly like the ones my dad and I installed in the garage back then! The Small world story was great! I have one to share. I'm at a register at Lowes and the lady that was checking out my items had a definite Brooklyn accent so I asked her what part of Brooklyn she was from.?? She said Williamsburg! I asked her what Street? Se said South 2nd Street. As I've mentioned before, I lived on South 3rd. Turned out that she went the same church that I was an altar boy at and school that I went to. St Peter and Paul's. I don't know if you remember but we have a small world story. When I moves to Westbury as a kid, I was also an altar boy at St Brigids , a church you are familiar with! Cool stuff!
@ScoutCrafter I remember your telling me that. So did my brother. There was an apartment house near the LIRR trestle across from the Wheatley hills tavern!
Where I live we have bins for trash, recycle and yard waste so there is no "poor mans flea market". Lucky you. I'm thinking that I need to go to the dump and sit there for a bit and peruse what people are getting rid of and see if that works as a poor mans flea market.
In my part of the country, people have a garage sale or yard sale and sell all those items instead of throwing them out in the garbage. The buyers get a bargain and the seller gets $$. Thanks for the video
Years back i flytipped an old freezer out miles from anywhere.30 mins later i realized it might have my name on it somewhere so i turned around to go back to it,,,and it had gone!
I think the reason all the nostalgic stuff is so pricey is that guys that are 50+ years old are buying thinks they really wanted, and couldn't have when they were young. Or things that they remember fondly from their youth. I've collected and refurbished the 11 Buck 300-series folding knives from the 70's and 80's (with the black delrin handles). The Buck Stockman was a "grown-up" pocketknife, before you graduated to Buck 110's, and fixed blades, etc. When I was in High School in the early 80's, we'd buy Parker Bros. and Eagle, and Frost brand knives; they were fairly inexpensive, and were copies of Gerber fighting knives. Nowdays, on eBay, some of those Parker Bros. knives are more expensive than the Gerbers...
Mr. John, Maybe you could get a tote and give it to the guy who is moving and say to him, "Let me say you the trip, here is a tote you can put all your tools items in and i will pick them up every week."
So why have you not kcocked on the door of the house being cleaned out??? They may be happy to let you take all sorts of stuff just so they don't have to handle it!
My in-laws lived in Queens NY Seneca Ave two family home and finished basement with that pine in your video..complete kitchen and as teens hung there for years, great memories. Probably 4 families living in that basement now. 😩😩

Good show today John. You are so right! It is a small world. Excellent job on the light! Thank You for sharing!!
Love the 50's, 60's, or 70's nostalgia. That's my wheelhouse. And I haven't watched an ad in a couple of years. I'll never go back. 😊
Same here- If ever UA-cam tried to force ads on me while on Prime I would be gone.
You scored, one man’s trash was a gold mine for you. I would have dug them out to. Your vintage lights are similar to some commercial ones I use to service. They were spring loaded and a pain to open. They were in older bank enterences. Thank You
When I worked in a theatre group I was a lighting technician. We used to call that style of lens a Fresnel lens. Great looking pannel.
Great video.

I like a seller like that. So now your friend is a saved seller for me. Thank you
Me too! EBAY really does a decent job protecting buyers but some bad sellers always slip through the cracks. 😃👍
@@ScoutCrafter oh yes i agree

Remember the old shoes that had creape soles? You could use the soles to clean snading belts.

Silicone that has set in the tube is great for cleaning sanding belts and since you’d otherwise bin it, it’s free.
I've heard an old tennis shoe can be used to clean sanding belts but it really stinks.
The way you restore your tools, etc and get items from Poor man's flea market, you will never have to buy new stuff again.
Where I live we have bins for trash, recycle and yard waste so there is no "poor mans flea market". Lucky you. I'm thinking that I need to go to the dump and sit there for a bit and peruse what people are getting rid of and see if that works as a poor mans flea market.

Thanks! Did anyone ever find a ketchup bottle picture for you?
Not a vintage pic but other ones. 😃👍
Some caulk tubes when they kick off and go bad you can use as sandpaper cleaner too.
I have the round version of that square fixture on my front porch with the spring clip attachment system...about eleven inches wide.
I always leave a feedback with eBay purchases one I've received it from the seller
Hey, John, is that the same front yard in the photo, that you currently have?
Yes! That is my front yard now! 😂👍
Did Carl tell you about the history of the clock and why it was so gummed up? Amazing that Carl was the seller.
No I have to ask him. 😃👍

Old silicone or latex dried in the tube? Don’t trash it! Open it up and use it to clean sandpaper drums.
