It's why organized crime like the Mafia can never flourish as families who own generations. Next family to rule and spread "fairness". I won't even get into the Cartel style of family.
By far the best documentary I've seen on Slab City. It's crazy how all these people found each other. It seems like a lot of them have suffered through a lot of pain and they found a community where they wouldn't be judged. My husband was a victim of abuse and suffers from mental illness and he's a lot like Bob. He just believes in being a good person and the golden rule. Treat others how you'd like to be treated. Another crazy thing is when you asked them what their biggest wish was and most of them had selfless wishes. They didn't wish for money or anything material. They just want people to have compassion for each other and not judge. I'm glad they have found each other and a community where as long as you treat others with respect, you will be shown the same respect. It's how the world should operate.
This incredible insight into the lives of Slab City residents was so beautifully shot and edited, that it feels of Independant Film Festival quality. Fantastic and fascinating documentary!
Well done film Rick. Misfits and malcontents, though they may be, those residents are human beings one and all. They are brave and resourceful, loyal and true to their nature. My hat's off to them all and I wish them happiness.
If they are so brave & resourceful, then why don't they get the services they need & get a job? There are PLENTY of jobs. I work 3 jobs so I won't be homeless. And I don't have kids, bcuz it's irresponsible to be destitute & bring MORE kids into this mess! 🤦♀️

I really liked this, it's well done and in no way I see, judgemental. My wife and I of 40 years are for the first time in our lives homeless. We have been for two months here in Ocala Florida. We live on unfortunately private land owned by a large corporation and there are a few others here. Being disabled I can't walk very far and my wife a 3 time stroke victim has to walk to get our necessities. We live in a tent, as do the others here, and it's been bitterly cold and lately raining a lot. I say all this because I see slab city as a better situation than ours currently. I'm originally from California, and while I miss the deserts and mountains I don't miss the issues of my home state. Anyways, I liked everyone that was on the video, including the investigator/videographer, good job sir, good job... In closing, not everyone who has become homeless is a criminal or addict, sometimes you become old and get sick and just can't afford to pay a house payment. Understand, we are all human and have worth, both my wife, a certified chef, and I a business owner just have things go south.
We should ALL be more like slab city residents!! It’s easy to judge others knowing nothing about them but most of us are but one paycheck away from being homeless!! You’re welcome back to Calif anytime and I’m sure the residents of slab city would welcome you with open arms! I can’t imagine being homeless in the rain and severe weather! I’m so very sorry you’re going through this!! As Americans we are failing our elderly our veterans and our disabled population (who deserve better from our gov) and it’s shameful!!! I pray your situation improves! Bless you and your wife!!

This country is so ridiculous, failing it’s elders and ill. I shouldn’t have to pay thousands for necessary back surgery. You should not be homeless. It is so sick. I’m so sorry for your situation. It really angers me. I really hope you find the help you need. I have a friend who got a job by admitting they’re homeless and are desperate. And that they were reliable. They eventually made enough to move into a cheap room! I hope you are staying as safe as you can. Sending so much love ❤❤❤

This was very well done. I think slab city is what society as a whole should aspire to be. Inclusive, do right on to others and when you don’t….well. Thanks for putting this together!
I love how open everyone was. That just shows what a great documentary maker the man (sorry I didn't catch name) is. It was endearing how much he appreciated everything.
I’ve watched just about every UA-cam video on slab city, some of these people I’ve seen in other videos. But this is by far the best one. The Slabbers truly opened up to you. The bunker footage… whoa!
Damn I want to see more... This was a great documentary, I like seeing it from the inside out and first time I've seen a doc that focuses on the people that call Slab City home. I wish every state had a place like this where you could go to drop out of society and do your own thing. These people are beautiful and they have made a beautiful community and their some of the realest most humble people. Great content....
I'm only familiar with slab city because of the movie "Into the Wild". Doubt I'm the only one. It's weird to have such strong feelings about a place I've never been in a country I've never visited. This was nice.
This is by far one of the best documentaries on SlabCity. I think you're probably one of the few people that is actually able to get someone to trust you enough to use drugs on a major UA-cam platform. But you'll see the same type of people if you go into a downtown area. Mostly homeless encampments. Every single one of them has some type of mental illness and drug addiction. That's all this reminds me of is a big homeless encampment where they feel free
Thanks for such an awesome video and you did a great job telling their story from a non judgemental point of view. I absolutely love Dot . She's got a great attitude and a down to earth person.
The fire at the end was the dose of reality punctuating the druggy hot spring chill sesh. The fire department and police still respond, even though the inhabitants don't want to be a part of the system they inevitably rely on in the event of an emergency. This was a really good documentary. Well done.
That really hit me- they don’t want to be part of ‘society’ that they don’t fit into and are badmouthing the ‘system’ but the second they have an emergency they are on the phone ‘expecting’ all the response and service needed for their emergency. I’m not saying they shouldn’t get it- I’m just saying it’s hypocritical and once again it’s that hippie notion where thank goodness someone in society isn’t on drugs and is organized because if they were in charge and I called for an emergency I’m not sure someone would show up help or anyone at all.
They couldn't live without the rest of society, where does their food and water come from etc . Theres no such thing as self sustaining. However they are living as they like and where they fit .
Good and bad, this is incredible! I love seeing the way that other people live and how different we all are but yet, so much the same. Awesome documentary!
Wow what a documentary. You really got to know the people here and I felt like I belonged a world away from where I’m living. God bless you all there. Sorry for your losses. May tomorrow bring a brighter day
This place seems awesome to me. People coming together and helping each other. I wish there was a way I could send them books and stuff. Dot is cool as hell! I like her taxidermy dinner party, pretty funny!
This was a beautiful documentary. The ending was absolutely heartbreaking with the sounds and what everyone experienced that night. I pray for all these misunderstood souls. Sometimes you have to take a big risk for a but of peace. LOVE ABOVE ALL❤
22:15 -the same thing happens in poverty stricken areas everywhere, actually. Though I am much better now, there was a time in my life when I was one step above homeless in the middle of West Virginia. I can compare it to that because I'd been homeless for a relatively long time as a youth. Anyway, we had to move into the first place that would have us due to extreme financial distress. The place we got was in a run down trailer park. It was a whole new world in there. Yes, people would communicate and help each other. I provided meals and a place to stay for park children experiencing hard times. For example, my daughter's friend's parents became unemployed so we kept her until the family attained employment. Near the end of the month, when everyone was broke, we'd help with transportation as we were one of two families with a vehicle. But what he says about the places being raided, that is exactly what happens even here in Central West Virginia. Everyone in the park would go take whatever they wanted or needed when someone went to jail, which turned out to be very often. It even happened to me during a week long hospital stay. Everyone promised to keep an eye on things, but when I returned, my home had been ransacked. All medications gone, my clothing pulled out and most gone. Pots and pans, gone. Hygeine products, gone. Even tools and cleaning products were gone. What really got me though, was all the food was gone from my pantry and freezer. There were so many people involved that no one told who did it and no one saw anything. I was never happier to move out of a place in my life.
That really sucks actually, im so sorry to hear that. To be one of the only ppl helping others out with rides and food etc and then to get ransacked by the same community, is just awful. You sound like you have a good heart and I hope you are well ❤
You’d think there would be some camaraderie when you’re all down in out and there you are helping with those things and that’s the thanks you get- how utterly disappointing.
I spent several summers in W.V. McDowell county, I'm glad to hear your doing better now, I've been in the hospital for a while and to come home to my place being cleaned out is so depressing, it took quite a while to get myself back together, anyway God Bless 🙏
@@stevenbentley683 I'm so sorry you experienced that as well. It's a really hard thing to come to terms with. It hurts. I hope you are much better now. Thank you for your kind response.
Slabbers are more eloquent and generally well-spoken than most of what I see on youtube, twitter, tiktok, etc.... Very interesting video, thanks to all involved/interviewed!
Slab city reminds me of a video game called Fallout. It really does look post apocalyptic. Those residents there seem to be highly resilient people. If society collapsed tomorrow, they would be the survivors hands down. The life/survival skills that most of these individuals acquired over their life time are not taught in schools but learned from trial and error. Remarkable individuals each and everyone.
Yes, and no; just about every resident out there is living off of some type of government program rather it be: Social Security, food stamps, disability, cash aid, donations, etc. So, even though it may appear on the outside that this is a fully self-sufficient community behind the curtains they are being supported by our tax dollars.
I want to say thank you for taking the time to share this with us. I have love and respect these folks that have the courage and resilience to follow what their heart and spirit says to do. The fire broke my heart. I hope like Dot said it becomes a place of non judgemental. The fake civilization of plastic people judge you without ever getting to know you. I hope the dog killer is caught. I don't believe they deserve to live. I have a pet business because I have a difficult time with people. Maybe if someone can talk to the dogs, they can help. ❤
Good Morning Rick, what an amazing documentary on Slab City, such great people each with there own demons & issues trying to live life to the fullest in such an amazing place. It must be a great place to live with all the love & friendship & respect there, thank you for showing this Rick I love all your videos. 😊👍😊
My brother would love living there. He is homeless. He hates feeling trapped. He also is creative and crazy. He can handle the heat but winter is rough in AZ , to much of a change.
There are hints of it in this doc--but I would just say that while the residents talk a lot about freedom, no one caring about expectations, etc., and undoubtedly those sentiments are genuine, there is also a cultural undercurrent that is actually similar to what is heard and seen in prisons. For certain people that might work, but I have known a lot of homeless who would rather be cold than live with the tensions that can go with that.
Been checking out videos about this place since seeing into the wild in 08'. Seems like a lot has changed and a lot has stayed the same. This is the standard of excellence as far as the docs go. Outstanding coverage. Magdalen is relatable.Steller lass.
I have seen ALOT of videos/documentaries about Slab City. I've been interested in it for a long time. It's fascinating. I think this is the best documentary I've seen on it. Awesome job! Thank you for sharing it with us.
Gives me Jaywick (Essex, UK) vibes which Bald & Bankrupt did not do justice at all to the town. The poorest place in Britain yet the chalets (1000's) have the vibe of Slab City. Wonderful video and thank you to all the residents of Slab City for showing us what kindness is. An example to the western world, very positively.
Me too!! People in the comments are glamorizing this place. No readily-available drinking water, no plumbing, no air conditioning in 105+ heat, animal feces and garbage and flies and dirt everywhere, not to mention if you leave for any length of time your place is looted, or if you piss somebody off your place is burned down. And another thing, most of these people are still substance abusers or messed up from past substance abuse, and I'm not talking about weed. Nice as they might be, just the constant manic talking would drive me nuts. And before anyone comes at me, I have close family members who abuse heavy drugs and alcohol, and I've had to live with it and try to stay sane in very insane surroundings and circumstances, so I do know what I'm talking about. I can usually spot the signs, actions, and way of speaking of substance abusers, and again, I'm not talking about weed. I'd give most people one year of living there (to experience all four seasons) before they'd go running back to toilets that flush.
I would rather have disposable time than a disposable income. These people have life figured out ❤ this was one of the best Slab city documentaries there is! Great work 👏🏻

I happened upon this video accidentally and I have to say, I am now a different person as a result. I have cried, laughed out loud, nodded in agreement, and felt a genuine sense of compassion and love while watching.
Agreed ❤
So well said!!!
Excellent comment.
I agree as well. :)
Thank you so much!
Brave and resourceful.....
That are alive, but your bar is set extremely low for brave and resourceful
If they are so brave & resourceful, then why don't they get the services they need & get a job? There are PLENTY of jobs. I work 3 jobs so I won't be homeless. And I don't have kids, bcuz it's irresponsible to be destitute & bring MORE kids into this mess! 🤦♀️
@@rachelkristine4669 not everybody has to work a miserable job like you. Being a robot to someone else's company is not ideal
Wow, I've seen documentaries about The Slab before but This is the best real down to earth video Ever😊
Yooooo
Damn you should look up the youtube channels coming out of slabs if you want a realistic look onto what it's like.
Peter Santenello covers the same stuff, check him out.
The whole state will look like this sooner than later..........
bro 4 SURE.
most videos are only 20 or 30 mins, and basically make the Slab out to be a damn zoo, it's disrespectful as hell to the ones making it living there for real.
seeing how ppl have clean water supply, and that you can have mail and Amazon delivered there? Amazon delivers FOOD too!
get past the heat and the bugs that PROBLY crawl around, I could live there bro!
long as I could smoke buds and long as I had a bed, I could do it.
if I didn't have kids I think I could do it bro....
do you?
I wish I could meet Dot in person.
She had that energy.
The type of person that you can spend a day with & you end up with a new layer to your introspection.
Dot’s museum is one part cool, awesome, and original and another part CREEPS THE HELL OUT OF ME.
@idicula1979: I feel only great sorrow and she is a loonie loser not to.
totally house of 1000 corpses. a true trippy reality
I thought that I was very accepting of others until I watched this video. Thank you for sharing this because it has helped me to reexamine myself and who I want to be.
This absolutely the BEST, most heartwarming documentary I've ever seen on this community. Simply amazing work, sir. Thank you!
I agree! It was captivating. I felt like I was right there!

This is a compelling documentary about Slab City and its wonderful citizenry. ❤️ 😊 🌿 🙆🏻♀️ 👍🏽
Thank you for taking the time to reach their hearts and allowing them to reach yours.

I pray for you and your wife to find a home soon.

@@AWomanReborn sorry I was not notified of your comment, thank you so very much..
This was clearly a massive effort on your part and I wouldn't expect it from you in every video but this was absolutely amazing and something to be proud of. I wish I could see this kind of content all the time because you are a good interviewer, friendly guy and willing to actually get deep into the whole experience. This documentary is mind blowing and I just discovered it randomly here. You definitely earned a subscription at the very least. Thanks for making this and doing all you do on this platform.
Yoooo Kevin ! Thanks so much for the sub! More content to come.
😊.
lifestyle looks intriguing but man, i'd go crazy having to listen to the drangle that never stops- does he ever shut up.. i left that behind 40 years ago.. each to his own.. indeed, the best slab doc yet. thank you all for sharing
Yooo thank you !
This was very well done. I think slab city is what society as a whole should aspire to be. Inclusive, do right on to others and when you don’t….well. Thanks for putting this together!
Fascinating. That fire. The dogs cries. Too sad.
You have a true gift for this. I hope you get picked up by more networks and the deal of a lifetime cones your way. Simply brilliant.
I love how open everyone was. That just shows what a great documentary maker the man (sorry I didn't catch name) is. It was endearing how much he appreciated everything.
Thank you so much Aspen. 😍
I’ve watched just about every UA-cam video on slab city, some of these people I’ve seen in other videos. But this is by far the best one. The Slabbers truly opened up to you. The bunker footage… whoa!
This documentary is the BEST Ive watched, truly appreciate your time and showing the world these Humans are just like Any Of Us❣️
Thank you 🎉
Great doc my friend. I was very impressed. The animals crying in pain while they were burned alive just broke my heart.
Me too!
That city girl in this actually mentioned that.
That's how I knew about slab city. Into the wild.
Im curious, what country do you hail from?
I heard from Brennan Taylor, not familiar with the movie.
I like how they are real they are honest telling you who they are!
They are telling you what they want you to know
Thanks for such an awesome video and you did a great job telling their story from a non judgemental point of view. I absolutely love Dot . She's got a great attitude and a down to earth person.
Absolutely Fantastic. Love the pure humanity. So that's what freedom and acceptance looks like. Amazing... Bless all. Much love and respect.
It looks like a cult filled with trash piles and junkies. Interesting that makes u happy
Leonard's story alone was fascinating. This whole documentary was wonderfully done!
1:23:31 "If you're going to be a turd, go lay on the lawn." That's a keeper and will come in handy with a lot of people I know. 😂
This is the best version of Slab City I've seen.
It's Netflix quality. Good job
May tomorrow bring a brighter day
Dude, amazing job on this. Spent an entire day in my college class watching this, couldn't take my eyes off the screen.
Thanks Justin I appreciate!
The best documentary on Slab City ever made.
This place seems awesome to me. People coming together and helping each other. I wish there was a way I could send them books and stuff. Dot is cool as hell! I like her taxidermy dinner party, pretty funny!
They do deliver there. Amazon does too. You could probably just address it to the library or the Internet cafe.
Hands off to that chef. A beer keg is a GENIUS level cook pot. Mad props man keep it up!!!

Slabbers are more eloquent and generally well-spoken than most of what I see on youtube, twitter, tiktok, etc.... Very interesting video, thanks to all involved/interviewed!
Awesome job!!! I love this portrayal of these beautiful humans. God bless you and all their souls.
I'm just starting the video, but from the looks of it, it kind of reminds me of wasteland... Like they never left
It's seriously Fall Out New Vegas vibe near the Hoover Dam. 😳🐕💀🦴
Looks like Cali after fentynal
Yes, and no; just about every resident out there is living off of some type of government program rather it be: Social Security, food stamps, disability, cash aid, donations, etc. So, even though it may appear on the outside that this is a fully self-sufficient community behind the curtains they are being supported by our tax dollars.
and in GTA 5 is the whole Slab city area in the desert
Wow! This is just incredible! I feel the energy there is overall generous and caring! Very cool! Thank you for sharing!
Your summary at the end was just beautiful of an excellent, candid documentary. Thank you for sharing this with us all.
The dogs crying in the fire…. OMG. Heart wrenching…..
Omg. I really don't want to hear that. Care to mention the timestamp?

Good Morning Rick, what an amazing documentary on Slab City, such great people each with there own demons & issues trying to live life to the fullest in such an amazing place. It must be a great place to live with all the love & friendship & respect there, thank you for showing this Rick I love all your videos. 😊👍😊
This Documentary really opened my Eyes. To what truly matters. Being your true self , and being around people that are true.
I really enjoyed this!! Had no idea it was about over until it ended I was really sucked into this very well done!!!
The coolest guy was the Waterboy, soup kitchen guy, proud of you Man, and I like Leonards message,Love is the Most Powerful Energy in our World
Been checking out videos about this place since seeing into the wild in 08'. Seems like a lot has changed and a lot has stayed the same. This is the standard of excellence as far as the docs go. Outstanding coverage. Magdalen is relatable.Steller lass.

I stayed in the Slabs for a week, in the RV across from Salvation Mountain. It was awesome.
I would love to sit and chat with Dot. She seems like a true and kind soul.

I'm at the end of this video, and I'm clapping and smiling, seriously Amazed!! Thank you!
I've been there, it's a great place to go to be reminded why I go to work everyday and never completely give up...
I've been looking for a new slab city documentary. This one is by FAR the best. Subscribed.
I would rather have disposable time than a disposable income. These people have life figured out ❤ this was one of the best Slab city documentaries there is! Great work 👏🏻
Thank you for sharing. Love Slab City. Worked there, on the canal, for more than a year about 20 years ago. Got to know a few of the residents and Leonard, the man behind Salvation Mtn., and learn about Slab City, East Jesus, Niland, Dos Palmas, North Shore, Bombay Beach, etc. I've wanted to go back ever since.

I happened upon this video accidentally and I have to say, I am now a different person as a result. I have cried, laughed out loud, nodded in agreement, and felt a genuine sense of compassion and love while watching. Even though I turned the volume down during the fire (the mention of cats being unaccounted for was too much), I didnt want the video to end. You did an amazing job at capturing the true essence of each of these beautiful fellow humans. The way you approach them with respect and a genuine interest allows them feel safe and enough to open up and share their story. That is a true gift and I thank you so much for sharing this with us.
