That "waterfall" design was new from Volvo when the S40/V50s came out, and is quite practical. There is room for eight or so CD and other things behind it. Robert, I'm glad that you bought a C30. I'm 64 and retired, and have always liked Volvos. The C30 is the spiritual ancestor of the 1970's1800ES, reputedly called a "shooting brake" since it looks like a sleek two-door wagon. I think C30s are adorable and would have one along with a C70 if I could. In case you did not know, Volvo also made a transverse six cylinder engine for the larger vehicles, and a T6 came with TWIN K4 turbos. In 2014, I was driving a 1990 Australian-built Capri XR2 we had bought in 2000 with 84,000 miles on it, when my wife had said to me, "I'd feel much better if you drove something from THIS century." So, a search began. I always wanted a V70 but they were too expensive and of course to get the six-speed manual, an "R" is required. My search led eventually to a super-rare 2005 V50 T5 Sport with the M66 manual transmission. Which I absolutely LOVE! It is slightly longer than the C30, and much lighter than the V70, with the same T5 engine. The "Sport" model sits one inch lower, has stiffer suspension and a couple other things. Interestingly, the intake noise is clearly audible in mine. I toyed with the idea of a cat-back exhaust, but never did it. The torque "curve" is quite flat in our engines: 236 lb-ft from 1,400 to 4,800 RPM. Since the K4 spools so quickly, my car can lay 30 or more feet of rubber easily. Something I have done once to impress the grandsons in the car. My daughter was in my wife's car behind us, and when I glanced in the mirror, she was laughing, my wife was shaking her head but smiling. Oh, when your car needs tires, by Pirellis. They TRANSFORMED my cars handling and braking. If there was a way to add a photo, I would do so, of my car parked next to a C30. I LOVE your videos and find your humor and wit endearing. "This doesn't mean we will be swapping spit in the showers," however.
I remember seeing my neighbor's C30 parked in the garage as a kid everyday I get from school and loving that weird-yet-fun back hatch design and its entire complexion. Plus my dad owned a S90 at the time, so the pre-2015 interior design actually carried a bit of nostalgia for me - and it still looks modern enough for my taste! If I have the money to waste on a little hatch just for fun, I probably would really want this...
I've had all the 'Hot Hatches' in the UK... A Pug 205 Gti, an RS Turbo, and a Scooby.... Volvo's were always the enemy of 'go faster' when I was young... Then my husband got an S60 2.0T... NEVER have i loved a car more..!!! Had it for 10yrs and other than disc's, pads, tyres, it cost us no more than a steering rack and sailed thru it's MOT's everytime... Was quick enuf to overtake and keep the speed up, but SO MUCH more comfortable than my Scooby on long journeys... Could not fault it... I'd have another one in an instant, despite loving the pop's n bangs of a Scooby, Skyline, RS, etc.....
This car shares the platform with many others: Volvo C30, S40, V50, C70 ... Ford Focus, Kuga ... Mazda 3 When loocking for suspension tuning parts you may be more successful when e.g. search for Mazda 3 of that "vintage". You wouldn't believe what some select poly bushes and wheel spacers do for the handling of this platform. It still is hydraulic power steering! I drove a 2011 S40 T5 AWD for 9 years and did all kinds of stuff to it ... I recommend the following treatment to fix the driving engagement complaint: Basics: - lower the car! but be carefull: the factory front struts don't like lowering at all. They bottom out and thus loose all the damping within some months or a year. I've had very good results with Koni Special Active Dampers 8745-1110L and 8745-1110R ... they held together the last 2 years until I got rid of the car, ride perfectly acceptable over small bumps but firm up on slower movements like weight transfer in corners (exactly the other way aroung to normal dampers). Before I drove Bilstein B8 ... on this platform they are unbearably stiff and in the end give you less traction on real-world shitty roads due to their stiffness. - widen the track: Either use some 10-15mm/side wheel spacers with the stock wheels or look for some wheels with less ET. Volvo decided to go with crazy high ET (51,5mm if I remember right) ... this creates a tiny scrub radius and thus makes the steering unnecessaryly light und uncommunicative. I've driven 18x8 ET40 wheels plus 10mm spacers (to clear the Porsche brake calipers) and I really needed to convince the car to change lane opposed to stock where giving too much input was way too easy. - change the engine torque mount to a stiffer one! The Elevate one worked for me and is definately an improvement. Rear axle: - 2 sets of Whiteline KCA394 or Powerflex PFR19-810G to set the rear axle camber to about 1 degree ... this does magic to this platform ... any type of lowering springs, including (!) Volvos own R-Design, increase the camber in rear. That just makes it unbearably understeery ... the mentions bushing allow you to fix that! Don't go too low on the camber, or the DSTC will intervene if your turning radius gets too smal for your steering wheel input. At 0.5 degrees of camber my S40 ABS block rattly ended the fun when trail-braking the highway exit at 10km/h lower than what the car was capable off. Increasing to 1 degree rear camber fixed that I and could happily take my Autobahn exit at 80km/h again where 40km/h where allowed. - Whiteline W63320 or Powerflex PFR19-811 bushing for the dog bone control arm ... these arms are responsible for holding the track of the rear wheels. They are alyways under tension and their bushing get twisted quite a lot due to the arm being short. That's why they are worn in almost all cars on this platform at this age, as long as they didn't get replaces in the last 2 years. - Elevate rear sway bar. The factory anti-sway-bar setup is just too safe and comfortable. Front axle: - Whiteline KCA428 or Powerflex PFF19-1002G give you more caster, which increases the centering forces and road feeback. Together with the increased scrub radius due to the wheel spacers makes the speering stiff enough that you can actually feel the cornering radius by the applied force rather than only by the angle - when lowering the car you should really mount the steering rack high to prevent bump steer. There is akit from Whiteline (KCA405) ... but Engine: - stick with the K04-Turbo! I've driven K16 for 6 of the 9 years and found it to be way too laggy. The bigger turbo needs bigger injectors and bigger fuel pump. And that's where the trouble starts. I could write an essay about the bodge jobs in the ME9 of this Volvo Platform we tackled with our tuner. I just recommend you: DON'T! ... The car drives really nice with a squeezed out K04, especially if your goal is having fun in the corners. It is possible to extract 300hp from it with about 350lb-ft of torque. Sticking with the K04 and the stock injectors keeps the bodge jobs in the ECU hold together - replace the tiny stock intercooler ... this thing is an abomination! - replace the downpipe/cat with high-flow stuff. The rest of the exhaust system is obligatory. - only drive the tuning intercooler and high-flow-cat with a tune! The Bosch ME9 (especially in Volvos buggy adaptation) doesn't like the boost increasing too fast. Without a proper (!!!) tune you'll get wavy torque curve, laggy throttle response and even cutting out cruise control. The nice thing: should you still feel the need for the K16 turbo, it is 80% drop-in. The downpipe flange and its position is fully compatible (so the downpipe fits both ... that's how we got our cars through TÜV), the intake pipe just needs a different silicon joiner (intake on K16 is a couple of millimeter bigger), the boost exit on the compressor housing is exactly the same and at the same place and the water lines fit without any changes. Just the oil hardlines don't fit and either need the original Focus MkII RS oil hard-lines (which are expensive for what they are) or some flexible lines instead.
I havent changed bushings, but used adjustable camber arms from a mazdaspeed 3 vendor. But otherwise, spot on! Have koni fsd/special actives and agree on the k16.

Anything that isn’t a Toyota is pure garbage. Or maybe it’s good. But wait no it’s garbage again. But anyway. Dudes a nutcase, and I wouldn’t listen to a word he says
Best first mods by far - stiffened torque mount (any brand you want - I’m in my third one trying to find the best balance between sport and comfort for my taste), rear sway bar, and elevate turboback. Those three things transform these cars
The smaller the car, the more cavernous the glove compartment. In my Fiat 500 Abarth I have my third and fourth passengers sit there, easier than shoving them in the backseats
I swear the smaller the car, the more junk you can fit in there. I removed the backseats in my Abarth and I can fit so much garbage in the back now, my old OG Honda fit was the same.way, with the rear seats gone, it was like driving a van.

I am *so jealous* of the quick headlight removal. My Hyundai Accent has almost no access to change headlight/blinker/parking light bulbs. I think the dealership changes bulbs by first removing the front bumper bar! Yes, that is the factory recommended way!! Strangely, the rear lights are (mostly) as easy as pie to remove for bulb replacement.
This is my first and only car lol. Only somewhat regretting the purchase. Blew a head gasket and had fun doing the DIY with my dad only like two months after we bought it. It was a 2010 with 69,000 so we just bit the bullet. Works now and I’m still blowing shifts like the “grownup” I very technically am.
Forget aftermarket engine mods, get the Polestar software from Volvo. A bigger rear sway bar wil improve turn-in and let you swing the rear axle (in snow and maybe rain). You can add a free-flowing exhaust if you want, but those two mods are all you need to make it exciting.
The Polestar is good (I had it for about a year) as long as you keep the C30 stock. Once you start doing "stuff" (exhaust, intake, etc.) you have to go with a different tune to take advantage of the modifications.
I’ve had many wonderful cars over my years (I’m old) but the 5 cylinder V50 I have now (wagon version of the C30) is by far my favourite car and I will be watching this series with great interest to see how the turbo upgrade goes.
I wish the body on mine had been in better shape. I would have put the money into what it needed and kept it. But the P3 chassis V60 that replaced it is very nice.

you can quasi-turn off the traction control with the left steering wheel stick: the dial to DTSC and then hold the side button for a few seconds until the yellow warning light comes on
To pep it up quick and easy a factory polestar tune or stage 1 hilton tune will wake the car right up. As an owner of several volvos, I can assure you that all these cars (all P1-P3 volvos) are setup for torques not revs. As for the exhaust system I recommend, having played with many exhaust setups on T5 and T6 volvos that I own, I found Borla rear mufflers sound the best in my opinion, though they cost a decent premium. The rear mufflers I suggest are the Pro XS offset as they aren’t as loud inside the cabin but can be loud outside, if you can fit it and afford it, best of the best I found is Boomer Thumper series, problem with boomers are that they can resinate back into the cabin when they get hot as they get louder the hotter they get but they sound incredible! As for center muffler/resonator, that is down to personal taste and what you plan on doing with down pipe changes and what not, keeping the stock resonator will mean you won’t get any cabin drone but also means it won’t have any sparkle of fun like no crackles and pops. For center muffler what I enjoy the most and yes but of a borla fan, but it comes from my personal experience: personally even though it’s way overly expensive has found for T6 engines (not tested this on T5’s yet) is to use borla dual in and out X pipe center exhaust then route that down to dual inlet/single outlet muffler, then have that go over 2.5/3.0 inch pipe to rear borla mufflers.. this gives you the best of both worlds in my experience, when cruising at normal pace and RPM the cabin is fairly quiet and isolated while still exterior exhaust sound letting others know you got a modified Volvo.. but when you get on it, it will sing, scream, crackle and pop…
I own a C30 too, it's a great car! One downside of the headlights is that they are popular with thieves in my neighbourhood (I live in the Netherlands, Volvo is very popular here). They are expensive and very easy to remove.
Just the facelift C30 headlights or also the 'classic' ones (that are also featured on the V50/S40/C70 facelifts)? I believe the C30 facelift nose is identical to the later V40 nose, so those headlights should be fairly common and not worth a whole lot to thieves.
I have gotten three small 20-something females in the back of my Fiesta. I didn't ask how uncomfortable they were for the hour and a half drive, but they fit.

Love my C30! Great video as always, but the R-design C30 has a slightly stiffer suspension and 10mm lower than stock. I think Volvo nomenclature classifies it as "Sport" for the R models, rather than the "Comfort" suspension
There was also a "Dynamic" suspension which my C30 has, which is (apparently) a middle spot between the comfort and R-Design (errrrrr "Sport") suspension.

Many years ago I owned a 1980 Chevy Citation X11. That was a fun hatchback. Very quiet and comfortable too. Also wasn't fast, but was quick. It only produced about 160hp, but it was a very light car. And no 1967 Corvete sideways radio standard with the Citation either. I built a custom radio bracket for the back of the shifter, so your hand was always there to hit the FF button or change the station. That was one of my favorite cars.
I had a Volvo S40, on which the C30 is based. Just wait until it’s time to change the cabin filter. You have to remove part of the dash and also remove the entire accelerator pedal assembly.
I had an ‘08 R Design “Red Sox” C30 from new until 2017. Great car, sold it to a coworker who still drives it, though his carefree maintenance approach has led to it needing some major engine work. Twice.
I got a Volvo v70 2009 here in Sweden with the same 2,5l engine as your c30 but mine is has 3” intercooler piping, and removed catalytic converter (full simons 3” exhaust from the turbo back) and optimized to 300hp on ethanol probobly a bit more than that. It’s the best thing I did after I bought it you can hear the 5 cyll roar and allot more driving pleasure so I really recommend tuning it

I have one 1.6 Diesel, manual, with 320.000 kms......untill now no Problems.....Real Nice and Safe to Drive....Very Economic.......i Rate 9 Stars
Picked up a 2011 C30 up in Canada with a polestar tune in no small part because of this video. Many vroom vrooms to come!
Mazda 3
When loocking for suspension tuning parts you may be more successful when e.g. search for Mazda 3 of that "vintage".
You wouldn't believe what some select poly bushes and wheel spacers do for the handling of this platform. It still is hydraulic power steering!
I drove a 2011 S40 T5 AWD for 9 years and did all kinds of stuff to it ... I recommend the following treatment to fix the driving engagement complaint:
Basics:
- lower the car! but be carefull: the factory front struts don't like lowering at all.
Rear axle:
- 2 sets of Whiteline KCA394 or Powerflex PFR19-810G to set the rear axle camber to about 1 degree ... this does magic to this platform ... any type of lowering springs, including (!) Volvos own R-Design, increase the camber in rear.
Front axle:
- Whiteline KCA428 or Powerflex PFF19-1002G give you more caster, which increases the centering forces and road feeback. Together with the increased scrub radius due to the wheel spacers makes the speering stiff enough that you can actually feel the cornering radius by the applied force rather than only by the angle
- when lowering the car you should really mount the steering rack high to prevent bump steer. There is akit from Whiteline (KCA405) ... but
Engine:
- stick with the K04-Turbo! Sticking with the K04 and the stock injectors keeps the bodge jobs in the ECU hold together
- replace the tiny stock intercooler ... this thing is an abomination!
Oh well, gonna save this one
looking to buy a 2nd car, and this 2009 C30 popped up, bit of km's but super clean, plan to see it tomorrow afternoon. so it was doing some research which brought up your video, thank you Aging Wheels! very enjoyable, subscribed. years ago moved (mistake) from a 240 wagon to a 2003 v70t awd, looked beautiful, lovely seats, had the seemless, but unexciting 2.4 turbo 5spd auto and the most horrid dead steering. it required 4 tows due to modules failing, traded within 10 months.
was to go test drive this 2009 C30, hmmm maybe this post has me rethinking.
get rid of the stock tubing between the airbox and turbo... there is something in that to reduce noise.
you can get silicone ones for a low price...
dont bother buying the ECU Spacer... its crap! just modify the funnel inside the stock airbox!
The noise reducer thing actually pulls out.
@@Gizmo42Rodeo does it on the C30?
That's good
@@Cony989 It did on the V50 so I would assume it was the same on c30.
what's the noise reducer part then? In my car it's airbox->MAF->pipe->turbo. No idea if that's standard for European models or one of the previous owners took it out already or I just don't know what I'm looking for...
@ it's the last piece of plastic tube that goes down to the turbo.

If for no other reason, get and after market intake for the sake of oil changes. I had a S40 T5 and did this for that reason alone. Also made it sound better too. I bought the intake from injen, but I know that elevate makes one too.
You make the best car videos, perfect mix of jokes, facts, and sound effects. Don't get me wrong I love scotty kilmer and Chris fix, Doug and all the guys. But your my favorite
I hate to be this guy but you shouldn’t listen to anything Kilmer says. He’s a hack and a nutcase. He flips around in his opinions all the time, in one video saying “Volvos are the best” and then another “Volvos are the worst.” That is literally what he said, go look for his XC70 video.
I always see these as the less obnoxious brother of the focus st. I have a V50 T5 wagon that I've had for nearly ten years now. Still going strong!
I’ve scoured the inter webs and this is the first c30 to be found in my exact specs. Same color. Same everything. Love it!
A lot of car people always seem to make fun of the rear of that car but I always thought it looked cool
I have always loved the way these little cars look
As I was scrolling my subscriptions, I saw this thumbnail without seeing the title or the channel. I thought Regular Car Reviews was doing a Friday episode.
This is better.
My wife has a kia soul, and I've got a 2020 challenger r/t, with a 6 speed. It always cracks me up that beyond obvious muscle car performance, we can fit all 3 of our kids into my car, with all of our beach gear in the massive trunk, and cruise comfortably at 80+mph on the highway, while getting an okay-ish 22mpg.
Remap and exhaust - love the 5cylinder engine from the focus ST

I am *so jealous* of the quick headlight removal. My Hyundai Accent has almost no access to change headlight/blinker/parking light bulbs. I think the dealership changes bulbs by first removing the front bumper bar! Yes, that is the factory recommended way!! Strangely, the rear lights are (mostly) as easy as pie to remove for bulb replacement.
How many people thought this was a Regular Car Review by the thumbnail, then when started watching was like - oh a crossover!
Some of the best editing in the game, and I never skip the in-video ads that are always hilarious.
You can turn off the traction control.
Click the end button on the left control stalk off the steering column until the screen displays DTCS. Then hold down the reset button on the same stalk for two seconds. The screen will then display “spin control off” repeat the process to turn it back on or restart the car.
A blue one just went onto Craigslist here 7 hours ago for $3k! I'm sure it'll be sold by tomorrow, even tho it's got an automatic transmission. I always look up cars while I'm watching a video about 'em.
Was looking to buy this EXACT car and was trying to find some relevant videos.... Found this. I haven't found myself laughing and so engaged in a Car Video since the "old" UK Top Gear! You earned a subscriber!!
I remember being a young car salesman and we got one. I drove it once and fell in love. Still wish I could get my hands on one but I kinda need a sedan nowadays so I'll stick with my old TL
Love the headlight removal feature! I've seen some cars (Renault Clio rings a bell) where you practically have to dismantle the whole front end of the car to get the headlights out!
I was trying to remember what they website we called.
I don't think I'll forget it now, thank you for taking their money.
you can quasi-turn off the traction control with the left steering wheel stick: the dial to DTSC and then hold the side button for a few seconds until the yellow warning light comes on
In Canada we got the T5, in addition to the 2.4i (B5244S4)
To pep it up quick and easy a factory polestar tune or stage 1 hilton tune will wake the car right up. Im building a c30 now, with full forged internals, ported and polished head, and full custom 3" stainless exhaust. I want to say total sales in the US over their whole life time was about 22k units. There really arent a lot of them out there
I LOVE that car. The editing in this video was second to none, you should win awards for your editing!
I had a Mondeo with that engine. The engine was definitely the best part of the car.
Am I the only guy who goes into his shop sometimes with zero intention to do any work and just sit in it? There is just something about the atmosphere that is so relaxing.
This video had me at Volvo. Great choice. I like the C30. 😊
Best used car commercial ever. Auto tempest should be proud.
I have always liked the way Volvo designed their cars. My 850 was a superb car of its time. And wonderful to drive. Every part was well thought out and convenient. Except maybe the PCV system.
I've been using my dads 1982 Toyota Truck Longbed (It's got that sick 21R Engine) to get around as of late. It sounds really really nice, but since it's so old, this description is SPOT ON for how it behaves. 11:49
Most comfortable cars I've ever driven. more comfortable than sitting on the couch at home. And engineered so well. They are probably the most underated maker, I reckon.
7:21 you can turn off traction control in these, turn the display to the "DSTC" bit and then hold the button on the side of the stalk for a few seconds, I used to do it to pull soem fat burnouts in my 2.0d version because im mentally child :)
Get a thick rear swaybar and the rear will nicely turn in when cornering. The Mazdaspeed3's fits easily with Mazda brackets.
Wow a fancy Ford Focus!!! Very comfortable car. :)
I have one as well. It is indeed a fancy Ford Focus, although the all-Volvo 5 cylinder makes it a bit more Volvo. And there I was thinking Ford had cheaper parts... I have learned the hard way that isn't the case unfortunately...
@ oh no Volvo parts are very expensive, fortunately at least here they are known to be very reliable.
Or a mazda 3 too! Seeing as they all shared the platform and parts. Ive got mazdaspeed 3 (rear camber arms) and focus rs (limited slip diff, clutch and turbo) parts on mine as theyre pretty much plug n play!
@@mauriciomarianocarneiro Hmmmm yeah people say that but I don't always find it to be the truth... It's not a bad car but it had some issues since I have had it.

Fun fact: you can roll the windows down with the keyfob unlock button if you hold it
one of the best cars i ever had, t5 was an amazing engine setup, nothing beats a 5 cylinder engine
My family has a C30 and we love it.
I nearly bought a C30 years ago, ended up with a Saab 93 wagon instead. This is bringing back some buyer’s remorse..
First time I see one of your videos. Entertaining, informative, funny, wholesome, all at once!
Love the C30
I have gotten three small 20-something females in the back of my Fiesta. I didn't ask how uncomfortable they were for the hour and a half drive, but they fit.
I own a 2012 T5 and love it. Great car and reliable. Fun to drive, great on the highway as it rides like a much bigger car. BTW, you can turn off traction control quite easily, at least in my 2012.
5:29 this is why I removed the foam on the inside of the hood on my fiesta. It makes the engine much louder which I like to hear
Being a huge Volvo fan, I could open this fast enough! Such a fab car, I had the V50 T5! The noises sound so familiar 😍 enjoy your lovely Swedish beast 😍🇸🇪🇸🇪
Now you made me miss my lovely S60 again. My Golf GTE has an awesome PHEV drivetrain, but everything else loses to the 14 year old volvo it replaced.
"it's soft touch, but you don't grope your dash when you're driving on the road" you're hilarious, subscribed.
Love my C30! Great video as always, but the R-design C30 has a slightly stiffer suspension and 10mm lower than stock. I think Volvo nomenclature classifies it as "Sport" for the R models, rather than the "Comfort" suspension
There was also a "Dynamic" suspension which my C30 has, which is (apparently) a middle spot between the comfort and R-Design (errrrrr "Sport") suspension.
im interested in this car to start with, which is why i watched your video. you mentioned autotempest, and i said "okay". i found a c30, 60 miles from me, for 4500 bucks! now just to pick it up. thanks a heap!
I love my 08 C30 Volvo T5 m66 I've owned it for a year and a half. It's a cool little hatchback. All you need to do is add a real good suspension. You're good to Go-Kart definitely a jead Turner everywhere we go.
Fantastic video Robert. Your fiesta ST is what brought me to your channel 4 years ago.
Your original ST review was so funny, man! I've watched it a few times ( mostly when shopping for an ST, though never got one), and since then it's been a ride and a half watching your show. Keep on keepin' on, and never stop not stopping, bro :D
Love the c30's rear hatch .it looks like a pod door on a cryogenic chamber.
Always liked the look of this car, especially the back. Was never sure if the car was actually good, knew it was pretty quick tho
I find Volvo steering a bit "dead" for want of a better description, especially on my V70 ('06)
Aye I remember the feel of the V70 steering. "dead" probably is what I would think of too!
Could try using higher tire pressures(depending on the tire). Or increasing camber/castor. Increased camber will make the steering heavier.
Not to mention the turning circle is terrible especially on the P80 cars
@@marisab1cc Damn straight. Feels a bit detached under normal driving and very wooly/vague under fore vigorous driving.
@@Braskus Tried higher tyre pressures. That makes the (already pretty hard/crashy) ride worse.
You know what they say: It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow
