Hey, LATAM engineer over here! That is speedtape. It is there to cover parts of the wing that have missing paint. As the 787 is mostly composite material, when the paint is peeled away because of the sun, you need to cover the exposed composite to avoid damage to it caused by the sun and the environment. This is a 787 worldwide problem, which Boeing has taken quite a long time to fix; the paint on the 787 is peeling away much faster than expected 🫠. To avoid operational impact (you know, stopping a plane for days just for a paint job) operators put this tape on top of the exposed parts. Then, when the aircraft stops for a programmed maintenance, paint is reapplied
Sure thing! We know it is ugly, and it understandably scares some people to see a plane wing full of tape, but as long as there is no solution by the manufacturer, the minimum we can do is explain things the best way we can 😊
@MillionMilesMarc paint peels happen on all planes, which is a normal and expected fenomena, yet the problem with the 787 is that it happens too quickly, much before than the programmed maintenance events. I think it has to do with the type of paint not having a good adherence with the composite (I am expeculating here, I am a powerplant engineer, so airframe is not my expertise). As long as I am aware, yes, the 787 is the only plane with this problem (I might be wrong on this, since LATAM does not operate other composite based aircraft I cannot say with certainty. To clear doubts, you can investigate if the same problem happens on A350s, yet if it does, it is probably not as dramatic as the 787). Also, yes, all 787 models are affected.
I've been curious about how does this route actually look like since I haven't seen it covered that much here on YT. Merci beaucoup pour cette vidéo. Très belle!
Nice video! Truly liked it 👍 Wouldn't have minded a longer version, and some of the darkness views of the South Pacific, specially if you have a window facing the Southern Pole, to catch a glimpse of the Auroras 😁 Greetings from Wellington, New Zealand 👋
Hello, I have a flight from Santiago to Aukland where I will make a 1:30h stopover, I'm afraid I won't have time to board for the next flight, has anyone done this stopover?
15:50 IPC (Easter Island), PPT (Papeete) and RAR (Rarotonga Cook Islands). In my humble opinion, both meal services are very poor, even for Economy standards. The lighting on the runways and sides is very good at AKL (the lamps on the ground are huge)!
Hi. I love watching your videos. I got questions to ask. What type of camera do you use to film your videos? What software app do you use to edit your UA-cam videos and is it free to use? Do you use your phone or laptop to do your video editing? Whilst you film your videos, do you use tripod or selfie stick - what brand is it? I am still learning on how to film and edit my travel videos. Any advice would be very helpful
Love it ❤❤❤❤ grettings from California USA 🇨🇷🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸I am from Costa Rica 🇨🇷🇨🇷🇨🇷buy one day I will visit chile and new Zealand 🇳🇿 and Australia 🇦🇺 nice videos 😊
Apparently it is anti-corrosion band-aid. Boeing is coming with a better paint formula to protect the wing from the elements. That is what I read earlier last month. I think that the A350 has a similar issue. Qatar reported it. That route is just nuts, there is no way I would fly it. One engine, 5 hours to the nearest airport. Yikes, hopefully no emergency ever occurs. Can they land on the ice? I saw a video of a luxury tour to Antarctica. They fly an a340 and land it on the ice. But I don’t know where that runway is located.
At approximately 15:47 he covers the possibility of diverting to one of Antarctica's Ice Runways (NZIR). I am such a nervous flyer, I can't imagine seeing that wing (even if it is only a paint issue) and knowing how far away we'd be from an emergency runway. 😳😳😳
Great review! It'd be nice if you walked around the cabin during the flight. We like to see the bathrooms, see if the crew left some snacks on the galley etc.
The legroom is awful. Very famous flight since a week. Headphones are nice. Desert is a joke. Rest looks OK. Breakfast looks nice. Wonder if this is the plane that dropped. How long the flight? Maybe I missed it.
In this plane you got less space as a human than a rat in a cage. 👎 God bless that there is no smaller type available for this long haul route over water.
finally a vlog about this magnificent route!!!

Thank you for this clear explaination !

You are right ! And Is the 787 the only aircraft concerned by those wing paint issues and are all models concerned or just some of them?

Thanks @bicholabbeh for your explaination, I love airplanes but if I SEE this wing covered with tape in My travel, I m sure I Will not be quite.
I ‘ve flown several times from SCL to Ack on LATAM and had always had a great experience . Good video!
Thank you!
are there are many NZers and Aussies on that flight or is it mostly Chileans returning from vacation etc...?
@@Grimmes12 I guess both!
@@mariobezanilla5762 cool, thanks!

I remember this flight in 2012 on A340 Lan Chile. Same route.
Love this Chilean - Brazilian company

Most awaited video

What is with the laser from the ground at 13:35?
some idiot pointing, the pilot reports it to the control tower and there could be an investigation because it is a crime 🤣

Hi, do economy seats come with 100V power outlets?

I suppose the tape keeps the wing together 😁😆
Nice trip report!❤
Thank you!

The name is high speed tape, is Specially for wings of the Airplanes

We are not allowed
I see a lot of that tape specifically on 787's not on other types of aircraft
Great review! It'd be nice if you walked around the cabin during the flight. We like to see the bathrooms, see if the crew left some snacks on the galley etc.
Thank you! Yes I usually do it on all of my reviews but this time I was Blocked against the Window and didn't even stand up once unfortunately
Thank you for the trip report! Love your videos. How can you afford flying so much?
Such an endurance test (13 hours) rates automatically a 👍.
An aircraft with tape. Dio Mio. Was sind das für Fluggesellschaften?
Google it, mein freund
That food looked univiting, was it as bad as it looked?.
schönes Video. C. Bauer
Danke !
To and fro flight duration difference due to tail wind.
Nice 😊
13:34 no falta el pastel con el láser.
Será una discoteca 🤷🏻♂️
That is a lot of speed tape. I wonder what is going on there?!
Google it
wished this was day flight
Some A350s are also experiencing the paint peeling on the wings.
Nice!🙂
Lufthansa captain performs wing wave.

Kkkkk
Not for 100000 Euro i would fly again
20:00 haahhahahaah
Flar earthers in shambles.
Those meals are pathetic for a long-haul flight.
Not a lot of food unlike United 😂
Most uncomfortable 787 in the industry!
Worst are LATAM 787's with recaro seats. Those are unbearable. At least in the old interior, you get a bit more of leg room and a comfier seat
also the prettiest
In this plane you got less space as a human than a rat in a cage. 👎
God bless that there is no smaller type available for this long haul route over water.
such a bad airline toilets bad not enough for every one on board
