Hi Jason please assist me on this. I just bought an M1 MacBook Air (256gb ssd - 16gb ram). Can't figure out how to store everything resolve works on, on an external NVMe 1TB Samsung SSD I just bought for this purpose. Do I create a new db ?
Hi! Congrats on the new computer! I thought I had a video on this but I guess I don’t, I should really make one. So keep your database on your internal drive somewhere. Your database will not get that large, it only contains the project files which just references all of your media. Keep all your media on the external SSD. This is the same set up that I use, you should be able to do this with no problem. You can also set resolve to put all of the cash files on your external drive as well. That will help keep your machine from clogging up. Even though you can delete them all at any time.
@@JasonYadlovski thanks for coming back to me - really appreciate it ! ok I got you so far. definitely another video even though you have a similar one will help. So just to verify your advice, I should keep my media files on the external NVMe ssd and then once I start a new project go and change the cache file location and gallery stills location to a folder on the external ssd ? should I create each one of these folders within the same media folder location where the project media are or should I have a common cache file location and common gallery stills location on a ''root' folder on the external ssd for all projects ?
Hello. I need your help asap. I have been having issues where after editing an event video and then after the rendering is done, the output file only plays a section and gets stuck around the middle point. Have you experienced that? How do you resolve it?
Hey! I have not seen the rendering get stuck and still get completed, but you can try the setting in this video, and then re-render it and see if it helps ua-cam.com/video/IkCKZx0i55E/v-deo.html
Hi Jason, can you please tell me the difference between none, smart & user when rendering. The problem I have is a brought a video file in 1280x720 about 1 1/2 hours long and it locks up towards the end of the render. My computer is updated with a fast processor and video card. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you Paul.
Hey Paul, are you talking about the render cache in the playback menu? None means it will not pre render anything in the background, Smart means Resolve will select what it renders in the background when you stop working for a minimum of five seconds(things like transitions or effects), user means it will render whatever you have selected to render in the background when you stop working. These settings really just help with smoother playback and allow resolve to do some work in the background when you stop working for the length of time you set in preferences.
@@JasonYadlovski thank you for the explanation. I thought the locking up on the rendering had something to do with one of the different settings. You are always very helpful. Thank you as always. Paul.
Thanks Jason! I always wondered about how to know what project is in which folder. If there is no info text file in the folder what does that mean? Also do you need to have Resolve closed when you delete the files from your hard drive? What is the difference in Render Cache between None, Smart and User?
You’re welcome! There should be a tax file in one of the folders that should direct you to what project it is. You can delete The render cache at any time, resolve can be open or closed. For the render cache, when it’s set to none, that means it will do nothing, smart means to resolve will choose what it pre-renders and user means you define what you want to pre-render.
I remember doing this before to free up space but now I don't have the .info file to check what project I'm deleting. I can't know what project it is. Is there another way? Why I don't have the info text file? (I checked many folders. None of them have it). thanks!
I wouldn’t worry about the text file, just delete everything and you should be fine. DaVinci Resolve will re-create everything that it needs if necessary. But if you’re worried about that, I’m not really sure what to tell you if you can’t tell which projects or what. 🤔 Thanks for checking out the best and best of luck. 😁👍
Hi! I don't have any videos on managing 4K. I actually don't film or edit in 4K for the same reason - files are too big. I don't want to deal with all the storage I'd need for the amount of footage/videos I have and make. I've already filed 20+ Terrabytes of storage from all my youtube stuff and other projects. not only is it a lot to store, but a lot to backup! I use back blaze for it, thankfully they don't give you a limit. For youtube, I don't think you need to film in anything more than 1080 for the most part. I export all my videos in 4K so they are upscaled before I upload them to UA-cam and they will even appear as 4K on UA-cam. There are benefits to 4K, but for me I just stick with the 1080. 😜
@@JasonYadlovski thank you very much friend, I have a cache clip of 300 GB, a lot of projects and I was afraid to lose them in case of deletion, and here is such good news from you, thank you.

Hi Jason My hard disk is almost full because of the Render Cache. Is it possible to move the Render Cache folder on a project I am still working on. From the internal hard disk to an external hard disk without causing any problems to the project? I mean the main folder of RENDER CACHE. I have a number of projects that are in the software right now.
Hi! It's ok to delete all the render cache. Resolve will just recreate what it needs. You need to change the file path if you want the render cache to go to a different location. I have mine go to an external hard drive. I frequently delete it all too.
Hi Jason, Many thx for your tuto. I really do appreciate you being clear, straight forward. I have a question : can I delete the pfl file to force Resolve to recreate them? Indeed some of them are useless and I would taka me a lot of time to delete then un-relevant one by one. Many thanks for your hep. Isabelle (Paris, France)
great video, but one question: if i delete the cash, does that mean the playback won't show the video and instead show "media offline" ? I set my one to user a few months ago, and nearly a terabyte of files were created and its utterly eating up my new computer and I'm tying to solve it.
Help me pls, i already delete render cache but my hdd still full. It almost eat 200gb of my harddrive. What should i do? How to delete it manually? I dont even know where that big file is
Hi! If you deleted everything in the file locations I mentioned, go to your Recycle Bin or Trash bin and empty it. When you delete a file, it's technically not gone until you do that. Hope this helps, thanks for watching!

@@JasonYadlovski Thanks a lot, Jason! Will do that! But then should I also redirect all the DV directories to the SSD or can it continue using my C: drive (laptop ssd) for other uses? Cheers from Rio!
You can change the directories if you’d like, but if you have room on your internal drive that’s OK too. Here’s a video on my workflow, it might help you out: ua-cam.com/video/97ixRQ6m2hI/v-deo.html
I can't create the optimized Media Datei anymore. If i click on optimized Media, it seems as the optimized Media Datei is going to create. But only for 1 second and after that the Clip still hangs. The Clips which i already have optimized work smoothly. Does someone knows what the mistake could be?
Hi! I'm not exactly sure. I work on a Mac, but I've used it on a PC. However, I always setup the cache locations to be on an external SSD....I'd start by looking inside the Preferences, under System at the top, then Media Storage on the left. That should give you the directory where it's going. Then you can also check under File --> Project Settings --> then under Master Settings on the left, scroll down to the Working folders section and see what it says. That might give you a good idea of where to find the info. Hope this helps!
I thought I had commented on this, but apparently I did not ... If you do any green screen work, and have Render Cache mode set to Smart ... then for a 15m video you can generate 200gb of cache files... yep, you read that right! I am now in the habit of weekly, or sometimes more often if I'm finishing up videos in batches, going directly into the CacheClip folder and deleting all the files there. Resolve - like you said - will recreate what it needs, but it usually frees up quite a bit of free space.
@@JasonYadlovski Yeah man, just a precaution for anyone who sees it LOL... I was SHOCKED when I saw how much space was being taken up ... I was like, "whoah, this 1TB drive is new ... why is it so full?" Take care!

Excellent video! Just for my own peace of mind - if I delete everything in the CacheClip folder and happen to return to a previous project for whatever reason - what impact would me having deleted the folder content then?
Hello thanks for the tip on how to delete cache files! However, i was wondering whether cache files reappearing after deletion is a normal occurrence? I have these audio cache files that I have deleted because I was trying to solve the random audio waveforms disappearing issue, but whenever i open davinci resolve and i open the project, the audio cache files immediately return in my cache folder even though i did nothing yet. Thank you very much!
Hi! Yes it is normal for the cache files to return. Resolve recreates them as it needs them, depending on the settings you have in your project for render cache.
Thanks for the video - that takes care of cashing. But is there a way to actually delete a project. I tried right-click on the project file but it does not offer me the option of deleting the file.
You're welcome! When you are in the project manager (house icon at the bottom right of the screen) you should be able to right click on any project and there's an option for delete.
I just marked those files and hit delete..... i could see in the corner of my eye that cpu went from 0 to a 100 and everything just died for like a good 20 seconds it is still counting GB:s
@@JasonYadlovski well the full ssd external has 600-800 gigs on in and i only use it for editing videos. (most of it is probably just 4h of gameplay but still) Optimized media is good but i should probably look into proxy from now on xD But yeah... still going an hour later, it stopped counting gigs at a 120gb and claimed the files was to big to move to the trashbin
Hi Jason. I've just moved over to Mac and Resolve from Windows and Edius, so this tip on deleting the cache files was seriously useful. I've just now assigned it to another folder that's easier to remember and access, which is were I put my temp renders, so much easier to delete everything after they're not needed. I take it that the setting for the cache folder in the project setup is overridden by the global function? I'm still finding the odd thing in Resolve that seems to be able to be changed in different places, scaling functions as an example. I'll just have to work out some of my own project templates for my usual resolutions and frame rates and then start from there. Thanks again. Cheers, Dave.
Hey David - yes, you are correct, the global setting for the Cache location will be used unless you've changed it for a specific project in the project settings. That's similar with many features - you have the default settings in Preferences for example, and these will be used for all projects, unless you specify something different in the specific project settings. It does take little getting used to, but for me, I've got a project presets with all my settings I use on my videos and that's the default configuration I've set up for all new projects too. Project Presets are a great way to go. Hope this helps!
I would say you can do it either way, if you delete the cash clip it will just be re-created when you go back into the project. But if you have the space and you don’t care, you can leave it.
Ok so im sorry for asking but, what if im working on numerous projects and need to delete the cache? Will it mess up the other projects or will it just re create the files when i re open them?
Hi! No worries at all! Resolve will recreate any cache it needs. Another alternative is to open each project and delete the render cache for that project, the option is in the playback menu.
Ok just was worried cause I have numerous projects I'm working on, currently can't export anything and didnt want to just delete everything and have to redo everything ive done ha. Thank you so much! For some reason it says my gpu isnt keeping up even though I have a RTX geoforce graphics card so I assume its because my hard drive is limited on space currently
Maybe a dumb question but, what happens if after deleting all the files in the cache directory I need to open again an old project? It just takes time to render it again? Or it gives me problems in the timeline deleting the cache? thankss, awesome video!
Hey! Resolve will just recreate the cache files it needs, so it may take a little bit, but usually it's pretty quick. Depending on the size of your project.
Hi! It should not affect your projects. But when you delete the render Cache, DaVinci Resolve Will re-create it once you go back into the project. So if you still need it in your project for smooth playback, you may want to keep it. But I have found it to be no problem to just delete the files and let resolve create them as I need them. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much i was thinking i had a virus or something bc i lost so much storage bc of this i could delete over 500 gb of space from the cacheClip folder
I won't lie I'm so happy I found your video because for the longest I've been wondering why my computer kept on saying my video file is the theme taking the most storage and that would make me think some how my accumulative videos that are saved on my laptop that came up to around 20 GB somehow took 200gb from my laptop and I would notice every time when I worked on a video randomly I would keep on losing storage and so I was worried I would never find why it kept on saying it was the biggest thing which led me to buying SD cards deleting stuff Die download for UA-cam video. In summary thank you

crazy, just freed up 250 gigabytes. (I do a lot of fusion so thats why its so high) You're a lifesaver
Nice! That’s great! 😁👍
Have you done any videos on managing 4k footage? I just started filming in 4k and I'm using so much harddrive space.
@@JasonYadlovski I might have to rethink filming everything in 4k. Thanks for all the info and I will check out Back Blaze.
Cool, if I can help answer any questions, feel free to ask! I’m happy to help. 😁👍
Can you delete a cache that you presently working on.Cache is showing 1.2 TB in my space, What would you suggest?
Sure you can delete the cache. Just go to playback at the top, render cache and choose the option you want.
Thank you so much. I was wondering where my space was going! freed up over 300gb :)

Wow. Gaming vids eat a lot.

hello, if you delete the cache clip in davinci, the projects that are in the program will not be damaged?
No, projects will not be damaged. It’s all just temporary files.
@@JasonYadlovski thank you very much friend, I have a cache clip of 300 GB, a lot of projects and I was afraid to lose them in case of deletion, and here is such good news from you, thank you.
You're welcome! I'd delete them. Resolve will recreate them if it needs them.
Shouldn't they have a "Clear cache" option in Davinci Resolve?
Hi! Thanks for checking out the video! They do, I mentioned it in the video, check at 1:40 The only thing with that is that it will only clear that specific project, not all of your render cache in all projects.

I think you can get rid of them, but I'm not 100% sure. If it's in the cache file location, you can most likely delete them.
@@JasonYadlovski Many thx for your help and for following up.
Will it delete all compound clips by doing that?
Thanks for checking out the video! No it will not delete compound clips.
Ok, but now my project timeline says media offline, even when the media pool is visible and I can open the clips from there, what to do?
It shouldn’t say offline, but try looking under the playback menu and toggle the option for use optimized media if available.
385gb returned! and that was just from 2020 projects :D Thanks for the tip lol

great video, but one question: if i delete the cash, does that mean the playback won't show the video and instead show "media offline" ? I set my one to user a few months ago, and nearly a terabyte of files were created and its utterly eating up my new computer and I'm tying to solve it.
No, it will not show is off-line. If resolve needs to re-create any cash files it will.

Hi! If you deleted everything in the file locations I mentioned, go to your Recycle Bin or Trash bin and empty it. When you delete a file, it's technically not gone until you do that. Hope this helps, thanks for watching!
My laptop ssd is filling up too quickly with Da Vinci's cache + optimized media. Can I buy an external SSD just for that? Will DV work well if it is with an external ssd? Thanks!
Hi! Resolve works great with an external SSD. I use a Samsung T5 (1TB) for all my media, cache files and backups. I’ve got a link in the description if you want to check it out. 😁👍

Are there any in/out points selected? That's strange....
Holy shit, I just reclaimed 250gb of storage. Thank you so much.
Glad you were able to clear some space! 😁
What is the default location on C drive? Resolve just completely filled my C drive, now I can't start the program...
Thanks, this was a life saver! I used to do it project by project...

yep. Mine was 250GB. Thanks for the tip
That’s awesome! Got lots of space back! 😁👍
dude, that thumbnail is classic! (says it all)

Whoa, that’s lots of space for the green screen work. Thanks for sharing! 👍😁💯
@@JasonYadlovski Yeah man, just a precaution for anyone who sees it LOL... I was SHOCKED when I saw how much space was being taken up ... I was like, "whoah, this 1TB drive is new ... why is it so full?"
Take care!
do you have any video how to remove shadow from my drone please? its FPV and have it for about 10 seconds in my shot and didnt find anything usefull to get rid of it.
Hi! There is a patch replacement effect, that you can use to remove or replace something that you don’t want in the image. I don’t think I have a video on it but I’m going to add that to the list of videos to make. 😜😁👍

Excellent video! Just for my own peace of mind - if I delete everything in the CacheClip folder and happen to return to a previous project for whatever reason - what impact would me having deleted the folder content then?
Thanks! No, it would not impact your project. If resolve needed the cache files, it would just re-create them automatically.
@@JasonYadlovski = Thank you. I tried but then found out you can not be in the project when deleting it.
Ah yes, you can't be in the project. 😜
I just marked those files and hit delete..... i could see in the corner of my eye that cpu went from 0 to a 100 and everything just died for like a good 20 seconds

@@JasonYadlovski well the full ssd external has 600-800 gigs on in and i only use it for editing videos. (most of it is probably just 4h of gameplay but still)

But yeah... still going an hour later, it stopped counting gigs at a 120gb and claimed the files was to big to move to the trashbin
Nice one Jason, thanks. Cheers, Dave.
Thanks David! 😁👍
Nice one, Jason, thank you very much. I’ll setup a few project presets and take it from there and checkout some more of your videos. Cheers, Dave.
Hi Jason, if I still come back to a project from time to time re-edit and export I should leave the CacheClip untouched?
I would say you can do it either way, if you delete the cash clip it will just be re-created when you go back into the project. But if you have the space and you don’t care, you can leave it.
Nice, thanks, I wasn't aware of how much storage that was taking (60GB).
You’re welcome! 😁👍
Does deleting render cache remove any prgoress on the videos you're editing or does it just start regenerating that cache?
It doesn’t delete anymore feeds, just the cache.
@@JasonYadlovski That's good, thanks for your time 👍🏻

You're welcome! Are you using the free version? If you are, it won't use any of the GPU, but the studio version will use the GPU.
Depending on the size of your project.
thank you! @@JasonYadlovski
You just get right to the point, excellent.
Thanks! I do my best to keep it simple and on point. 👍😁 thanks for watching!
Great video mate, thank you for your help.
You’re welcome, thanks for watching!
Will deleting the render cache affect my projects?
