Thank you for sharing. I am going on my 6th year. I still work. Without the ALS medication Radicava I probably would not be able to come this far. This is a terrible disease. I understand what you are going through. I will keep you in my prayers.
You seem like the best teacher ever, Darin! Praying for your recovery! My dad had ALS so I sympathize with what you're going through! I'm so sorry! God Bless You!
My heart is broken for you, dont dont give up. My husband was diagnosed 2017, symptoms started in 2013, he fought a courageous fight ending one month ago age 75.
My mother is also a public school teacher who was diagnosed a few months ago. She too had to say goodbye to the profession she loved this month. My heart goes out to you.
Hi Darin - my dad had ALS. You may have already done this but your local chapter of the ALS Association is a great resource. My dad received a grant for medication and equipment from the association that assisted him in his mobility issues. They were also a great source of emotional support for my family. I understand how difficult this disease is and you and your family are in my prayers.
I am sorry . I am passing through the same process . I was diagnosed with ALS too and I am feeling the same pain . I have been in my house for 5 months. And I want to tank you for sharing the way you got the medicine and I am trying to get it too 🙏
This disease is the literal worst. Like, I cannot stand it. My heart goes out to you, and anyone who is fighting so bravely, and for all the loved ones. I so wish there would be a cure in my lifetime.
I am so sorry. I am a nurse and in January of 2020 spent two weeks in the hospital with what turned out to be a Myasthenia Gravis crisis. I had to go on disability and I no longer have muscle strength for extended periods of time. I know how lucky I am that I was not diagnosed with ALS. My whole life changed but I still have my life.
You now qualify for SSDI. It is automatic with an ALS diagnosis. It is also retroactive from when you were first diagnosed. My sister was given it retroactively from when she was diagnosed too. Hope this helps!!
I'm so sorry the disease is progressing so quickly. I hate hearing you say you feel guilty. When my mom had ALS she was constantly apologizing for things she couldn't do and felt like she was a burden. She wasn't and you're not. Everyone, your students included, wants you to do what's best for YOU. Take care of yourself and make some great memories. I hate the financial weight that comes with this disease. My mother chose not to get a tracheotomy and try to keep living in a body that no longer functioned, partly because she liked to be in control of everything 😊 but mostly because of the financial strain it would put on my brother and I. The three of us moved in together. He worked days while I worked nights and vice versa. We took care of her together and were together when she passed. I wish our country took better care of its citizens in their time of need.
The mind reset every day is another nuisance. Basically you make peace with your situation but the next morning your mind resets and you have to spend hours again to achieve that same state of mind from the day before
I know what you are facing ... my husband lost his job before he even had a diagnosis. He was diagnosed with ALS 4 days before he passed bc I could not move him anymore and had to call 911 for help. He never got a chance to see a neurologist before that even though he tried for 2 1/2 years ... nobody had time. In the hospital, they told me to immediately apply for disability for him. ALS and kidney failure apparently are the only two conditions where you do not have to wait for retirement age and still get the full amount. I know that is still not enough but a little lifeline. Also, I was told that the big ALS Org helps with free medical equipment. Maybe you know all that already ... but I thought I share that anyway. Also ably for disability ... do not wait for that. It takes time to get everything set up by the government. I lost my husband 2 1/2 months ago and my heart goes out to you and your family. This is a tough tough journey ... Love!!!!
I’m glad that you’re positive and thinking about joy that’s important. I’m about three years into the same journey you were on buddy ALS remember you are not the disease. I worked for a neurologist, and was with the doctor when he had to tell a patient she had ALS. It broke my heart, and I held her hand and cried with her. I’m sending prayers and positive energy your family’s way. ❤
I see you my friend. I’m a fellow ALS warrior 3 years symptoms on set 2 years since diagnosis. Nothing is easy, we loose so much & it’s painful because we watch our identities slip away.
You can get SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) immediately with immediate Medicare when you have ALS. Apply ASAP. The ALS foundation can help if needed.
Yes, I posted that once he’s on certain programs his wife and other caregivers can get paid through IHSS. What’s So ridiculous is how broke they have to be to do so. 🤯
@@QurVgn I agree. A good agent to do your paperwork can help you get through this process. I had to move money and assets around so it would happen. On paper you need to look broke

But, discovered that he simply could not. Look into SSDI!! The process takes time but you get retroactive based on when you started the paperwork. Any assistance is good. Continue prayer and a huge huge hug. ~diane

I am so heartbroken for you. For all your dreams that will not come true. For your family and the ones that love you. For all of the students lives you have touched over the years is incredible. Never give up. You are loved, cherished and never alone.
Still a great teacher! You have a much bigger classroom, a more diverse set of students of all ages and an even more difficult subject. Thank you, Darin, for the important lessons you are sharing.❤. God bless.
Sir in my district we have what they call a cafeteria plan were other certified teachers donate days to you. Check with your district if they have something like that. That way you don’t have to pay out of pocket for the substitute.
Sending love and thoughts. My dad was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (ALS) in October 2023 and died 3 exactly months later, such a cruel disease, I hope you can enjoy the time you have. I am a teacher and can imagine what a disappointment it is that you are unable to do what you love any longer. Thank you for documenting this, I am sure it will help people, I wish you well x x x
The joy of the Lord is our strength. But it doesn't mean it is easy. I am so, so sorry, Darin. You are so loved! And maybe this is your new platform to share your new life lessons and faith lessons you didn't intend to be a teacher of. But God always has a plan for those who love Him.
Steve Gleason Foundation!! I’m in New Orleans and I have a freind with ALS! Gleason was a former football player here and his foundation has helped sooo many! Reach out and best of luck!!!
I just came back from my long run preparing for a marathon. I often get asked why I do this and then I always say: because at this moment I can. But I don't know for how long that will last. Seeing your video is really humbling. You are a true inspiration and like others have said, students do not forget their teachers. Especially not teachers like you who love their profession and care about the students as much as you do. I also can't believe just how much of a financial burden your diagnosis is (I'm not from the US, so it always baffles me). I have donated and hope it helps, even if it's only a little bit.
I’m so sorry, I had to give up my nursing career because of rheumatoid arthritis when I was 51. I have been able to find joy in many new things since then and I hope and pray you have the same experience. Hugs snd prayers
I’m so sorry. I was worried about you going to work but I could tell it was so important to you. My mom lost her job when she couldn’t talk anymore. She loved her job and it was a big part of her identity. Please tell me you have life insurance. In the meantime if you have to use credit , do it . Hugs and prayers
Hey Darin, just watched you video and I’m so sad for you. I know from our couple of days together back in 2018 that teaching is your passion and gift. You were, and still are, inspiring. I’ve made a donation of what I can to your cause, and will uphold you in my prayers.
You are such a hip, smart guy, I believe your students will certainly miss you. Now you are presented with a new challenge, and in a quiet moment some idea may come to you that leads you into your next phase of being useful to people. Maybe it is this vlog. You may provide comfort for someone else beginning their journey with ALS. Life can suck so much. I wish this did not happen to you, I bet you are such a cool teacher. We online are far away, but I offer you my support in anything you go through.
😢 I’m so sorry that you had to make this decision. Sending lots of hugs and prayers as you continue to navigate the changes that come your way. ❤ Go find some joy! 😊
😢 thanks for sharing. Your vulnerability is so humbling. I hope your students see this. What you are doing is a better lesson than any student could get in a classroom. I love what you said about finding your joy. I can’t even imagine how you’re staying so positive. Know that your legacy will keep on. I still remember all my teachers - the good and the bad. Sending strength and positivity your way. No one will ever forget you. I am so glad I found your channel. Thanks for sharing your story and reminding us all of what is important in life.

I'm so glad you have a supportive administrator. Your students will continue to think of you and make you proud. They know you are always there for them whether you are in the classroom or not. Please take good care of yourself. Teachers supporting teachers is so important. We have made a donation to support you. Thinking of you and your family during this very difficult time.

My man. Stay strong, I just donated and it looks like the gofundme is already going stong. You help many people with these videos, whether struggling with als or not. Thank you for everything, go find some joy!
You are such an amazing person, inside and out. Very difficult decision. Know that you are loved and cared about by those who interact with you every day and those who have never met you. Keeping you and your family, in my prayers. You are right, there is joy even in the little things that surround us every day. Even a gentle breeze can provide some comfort and a joyful feeling. That said, another good decision to agree to a gofundme. It takes a village, and Darin, you have a village!
It’s been sad for me to see your channel.I took care of an ALS client named Rick he was your age. He wasn’t married/ had no children. He was a pilot until ALS. He lived with his very sweet mom who took him to Germany for fake cure, etc. Took so many supplements he could barely swallow . She had money and was devoted to whatever he asked for.I want to be honest how it was from a caregivers perspective. I felt terrible for his mom her son was leaving before her. No mom wants this! I didn’t like seeing him like a rag doll, honestly I felt guilty I was married and had kids. I was also extremely healthy and felt bad he had to look at me with my life how unfair is that? I always gave 100% to him no matter how mean he was. It was my honor to help him find peace because I don’t wanna see anyone suffer. Your family will see you through. You are so fortunate to have them, but they aren’t gonna like what they see. I ask in the name of Jesus your family would be strong for you and with you . And that the Lord would bring comfort to them also. Amen 🙏🏼
I know you mean well and people share because they feel connected but I just want to say...I don't have ALS but I have a serious autoimmune condition and comments are usually riddled with how horrible it is and oh I knew someone who died from it or suffered from it and I hate those comments. They are not helpful. I m sure he is aware completely or can imagine the challenges to come and they will take it day by day . Thats all we can do..moment by moment ..day by day. Mr. N needs our encouragement
Sending big big hugs 🤗 I am sorry you are having to go thru that. You are a TEACHER in your ❤. You & your family & friends are in my thoughts & prayers.
Hi Darin, this really sucks. I’m really sorry you and your family is going through so much. I have watched Brooke Eby on UA-cam and FB and she has ALS, I think in her early 30’s, if you want to check out her channels. I am praying for this cruel disease to slow so you can enjoy your family time. I believe you are going to a better place as I’m a Christian, but this is very tough stuff. I am praying for you all. ❤️🇨🇦🙏
So sorry. Your life, teaching, positivity, and joy have brought me joy. Through it all, you always end with, "Go find some joy!" You have used your little corner of this planet tonspread sunshine and joy. Thank you! My prayers are with you. May you feel God's presence everyday as you walk through this. I pray that the prayers of ao many around the world will strengthen and uphold you.
I have ALS too and it’s a bit different in each state but it you talk to a good disability attorney they can get you on Medicaid for access to a program that that pays a loved one to help as a caregiver
Hi Darin, I am glad you got through this video. We care about you and prayers going to the Father for respite care and daily encouragement. Your Principal’s reaction overwhelmed you. You have a community who care deeply for you. So I immediately thought of Maya Angelou’s quote: people may not remember what you said they may not remember what you did but they will always remember how you made them feel. God is with you and He is caring for you. Take care
My heart goes out to your and my prayers continue. I can tell teaching is not a "job" for you It's your passion and your ministry. It's part of you and a part of your student's lives. Darin, I understand your feelings of grief. Please try not to experience guilt over something that's not your fault. Easier said than done, but takes alot of enery. Darin, you still have so much to offer. Your knowledge base alone about teaching is so important to pass on. You are still an invaluable assest to your field. Have you every thought of publishing a book? Perhaps a tutorial for teachers working in your specific field. You could include use vignettes of specific success stories to illustrate your techniques.. (Of course, you need to protect their anonymity.) Some former students may want to share their stories and progress, if they are able to do so.(I apologize. I don't know the specifics of the population you teach.) I do have a question, as my dear friend was diagnosed with ALS. Have you had results from any of the medications? Or the Vitamin regime? Now go find your joy!!!!

❤ I know how much we love our kids (students). I know you have made a difference in their lives and they will make a difference in the lives of others around them. Your ripple will go on and on. You're right, find joy in all that you can. Praying for you!❤🙏 My teacher heart feels your pain.
Darin, my heart aches for you. Thank you for being so vulnerable and sharing your journey with us. You have touched so many lives. 💙💙
I am so sorry that you had to leave your teaching job. You are still teaching us courage as you navigate your life with ALS. God bless you Darin.💙
Sorry to hear this, will keep you in my thoughts and prayers!
First....thank you for sharing your difficult journey...My heart hurts for you....
God bless.
Very well said
Sir in my district we have what they call a cafeteria plan were other certified teachers donate days to you.
That’s so sad ❤
The joy of the Lord is our strength. But it doesn't mean it is easy. I am so, so sorry, Darin. You are so loved! And maybe this is your new platform to share your new life lessons and faith lessons you didn't intend to be a teacher of. But God always has a plan for those who love Him.
Steve Gleason Foundation!! I’m in New Orleans and I have a freind with ALS! Gleason was a former football player here and his foundation has helped sooo many! Reach out and best of luck!!!
Gosh I want to hug you 🙏🏻, you are in my prayers always 💕💕
Apply definitely for SS Disability!! 🙏🏻
My ❤ just aches for you, Darin. I know how much you love the students and teaching. Praying for you and your family. 🙏❤️
This is difficult…. Sending you prayers of strength, comfort and love.
Thanks a ton! Your vibes are much appreciated - they really help me get through this!
This is heartbreaking. I will be praying for u and I hope you reach your goal on go fund me!!!
Thanks!
Darin, as a fellow colleague, you were an inspiration during our PD's and you continue to be an inspiration.

I'm sending you hugs and prayers🙏 I can sense you are a great teacher and your kids will never forget you!!!
Sending you so much love, strength, peace and comfort always xxx❤🙏
All the love and amazing ways you teach, are coming back to you now. It's obvious to anyone watching these videos that you are one of THOSE teachers..unforgettable and life changers. Best wishes to you as you navigate your health. I can only imagine how difficult this is for you and I'm so sorry you can't be with your classroom kids. Keep finding that joy! @@DarinNakakihara ❤️ thank you 🙏
I’m so sorry to hear this. It was so incredible to hear how your principal is dealing with your leave. I love hearing stories like this where we still have admin who truly care about their faculty and staff and what is best for them. She sounds like an amazing person! You are also amazing with how your attitude has remained positive and you’ve continued to find joy through it all. You are an inspiration! Supporting and sending you and your family big hugs from one educator to another! ❤
new subscriber. my daughter works with children, she loves them so much , so i feel your sadness. also, she lost her father at 17, and so i want to hug your beautiful daughters 🙏🏻. bless you all
You are in my prayers. I hate that you have had to give up teaching that you so love!!😢
Love to you, Darin.
I had too retired medically I was a Sped Teacher.
Sending love and light your way,
You are in my heart and prayers, Darin! Thank you for all the love you gave those kids. I am a retired teacher myself.
How is your breathing!!!!!! Your wife is an angel!!!!
Praying for you and asking for a miracle. I love teaching. Feeling that.
Much love for you, bro
I have ALS too and it’s a bit different in each state but it you talk to a good disability attorney they can get you on Medicaid for access to a program that that pays a loved one to help as a caregiver
Hi Darin, I am glad you got through this video. We care about you and prayers going to the Father for respite care and daily encouragement.
Your Principal’s reaction overwhelmed you. You have a community who care deeply for you.
So I immediately thought of Maya Angelou’s quote: people may not remember what you said they may not remember what you did but they will always remember how you made them feel. God is with you and He is caring for you. Take care
Praying for supernatural JOY and Strength. Also praying for provision for you and your family.
Praying ❤️ as you are on this journey
You are amazing, and I can not begin to imagine how you felt. My heart is with you sweetheart 🙏🩷🙏🩷🙏🩷🙏🩷
Darin, sry and sad to hear this update. My prayers go out to you and your family. May God keep you close thru this. 🙏🙏🙏
My heart goes out to your and my prayers continue.
I can tell teaching is not a "job" for you
It's your passion and your ministry.
(Of course, you need to protect their anonymity.)
Some former students may want to share their stories and progress, if they are able to do so.(I apologize. I don't know the specifics of the population you teach.)
I do have a question, as my dear friend was diagnosed with ALS. Have you had results from any of the medications? Or the Vitamin regime?
Now go find your joy!!!!
Stay strong please!
Sending you hugs and prayers, God be with you 🙏🙏
Hi Darin.. I am your neighbor. I worked at your kids school. My heart aches for your diagnosis. Can I make you dinner? Make you salsa? smoked cream cheese? A scented candle (I am a candle lady) for Fall? You are a good good man. Nice channel!! ~ Kristin S.
Kristin, your kindness truly warms my heart. I appreciate your thoughtful offer to make dinner and those delicious treats. It’s amazing to have such supportive neighbors!
I'm so sorry you have to go thru this. Life can be so hard and unfair. Prayers for you.
I’m so sad for you!!! Big hugs to you!!!!
