    I put H3 buffers in my guns and now c products and asc mags work fine with steel ak ammo. a slower BCG with a lot of wt behind it gives the mag follower and spring time to lift up the round.

    I have only used unaltered C Products Defense (CPD) magazines and they all have been flawless. I have four 10 round and two 30 round CPD magazines. C Products is another company the predates CPD. From what I researched, stay away from all C Products magazines. Also, my recipe for making my 7.62x39 AR work without issue is using an "enhanced" firing pin, a Wolff Gunsprings extra power buffer spring with a carbine weight buffer, and a Sprinco (Tactical Springs) extra power 5 coil extractor spring with only an insert and no CRANE style o-ring. Since using these parts and CPD magazines, I have not experienced one FTFire, FTFeed, or FTE. I hope this info helps anyone experiencing problems.

      The extra power buffer spring would be a key factor if somebody doesn't intend to modify the 30 rnd magazines. I'm sure your recipe for success will help people. I had to modify my firing pin to "enhance" it, Radical just sent me a normal FP with my BCG and upper.

    Thanks for this video. I've had the same dang problem with 10-round mags from C-Products vs. ASC. ( We can't get 30s shipped here to Colorado ). The ASC mags had nothing but failures on the last range trip, and I thought it was the BCG. After watching this, it's pretty clear. I'll have to get my Dremel out and apply your suggestions. Unfortunate that we have to do this, but as shown in the first part of your video, the accuracy is great with this type of rig... so it's worth it. Much appreciated.

      It's more accurate than I expected and worth the trouble. One thing guys are doing to overcome the force needed to strip the rounds out of the magazine is use a extra power buffer spring.

      You're welcome. I'm not entirely happy with the C-products mags either though. There are videos where you can take a nibbler and modify them. Also, out of 5 mags I had 1 that wouldn't drop free and one that barely fit in the receiver. If you have that problem, send them back they are warrantied.

    For a 7.62x39 and a pistol version you need these modifications !! Buy a Geissele twisted wire recoil spring with an H2 buffer. Next, buy a extra power hammer spring to be more reliable on igniting Russian ammo primmers. Next, make sure on your m-4 feed ramps that you have the larger .30 caliber sized feed ramps instead of the standard .556/.223 feed ramps. If you don't make sure your feed ramps are right your weapon won't be reliable enough to protect your love ones if necessary. Next, check that your firing pin will protrude thru the bolt enough for reliable primer strikes. You might have to get a enhanced firing pin that is a little longer. I hope this helps.

    thanks for the video, I had the exact same opinion on these 2 magazines, the 30 round ASC magazines have been nothing but trouble, I got my hands on the new cproducts mags which just look and feel like a complete different league, I also noted the cproducts are nicely machined without all the sharp edges and the follower is buttery smooth vs the ASC mags that just look like they are half done.

      Come on. I've got no dog on your mag right but this is not a video showing mag performance. If you want a rifle that says one mag, a few ammo choices and it might work then cool. But before you review the mags I would fix my gun. Show me the difference on a weapon that's properly built. Then show me the benefits of one mag over the other.

    I went with ASC 20rnd mags, but in my carbine. I noticed before I ever shot it that the mags would scrap the rounds. used some 400grit to smooth and polish the lips. One thing I saw when you shot, is just how much more recoil your gun made. with a rifle, your shoulder bears the recoil, but the way you are shooting is somewhat equivalent to limp wristing an auto pistol. the more the gun free recoils, the more prone it is to not cycle a round. thanx for the tips.

    • @ginsboy2003

      I think you may be right, but with a new C-products mag. ( I've tweaked 4 more) it takes around 6 lbs or force for the bolt to push the round out. (check it with trigger pull gage) Tweaking the mag can cut that down to 3 lbs. There are so many videos of guys using nibbler pliers I'm not gonna make one.

      I haven't tried them yet however the 20round mags work great. I believe the problem is with the dog leg in the 30s and the follower. That coupled with the spring. I sanded the follower, trimmed the lip at the top and actually stretched out the spring so far. They seem to feed a lot better. Manually at least.

    I had the same issues with the ASC Mags. and did the same modifications that you performed but I also bent the feed lips on the ASC mags up a few millimeters in the front so as to tilt the nose of the bullets up so they feed smoother. Now my ASC mags are more reliable that the C-Products and have been for a couple years now.
    I do urge people to do some heavy research before building a 7.62 AR because to get the rifle to 100% reliability takes a whole host of modifications and tuning techniques. Especially if you are planning on running the inexpensive & Very affordable steal case Russian ammo.
    The 2 biggest issues I have found with the AR ( 7.62 x 39 ) is that the gas ports on the barrels are WAY too small leaving the system considerably under gassed. Drill out the gas port to a very large ( .125" ) and get an adjustable gas block for perfect tuning. Then modify the feed ramps by grinding away the dual Fork style of the AR and " Dishing " out the feed ramp to a single ramp like the AK. Only Bushmaster did this with their AR ( 7.62 ) and they famously had the most reliable ( 7.62 ) AR's on the planet. Google " Bushmaster 7.62 x 39 AR-15 Feed Ramp " and you will see what I mean. Combine all of this with ( Wolf Extra strength hammer springs) , ( Extended firing pin ) , ( Superior Shooting Systems - Flat Wire buffer Spring ), ( Extra Strength extractor spring kit ) and the final addition that will get you to the 100% reliability plateau that everyone wants to be at with any rifle is the ... POF ( Patriot Ordinance Factory ) " E2 dual extraction system " which is a chamber pressure modification system that they will perform on your existing barrel. It uses the spent gas to slightly dislodge the spent case before it is extracted making the normal tight and messy extraction process silky smooth. Now this costs ( $150 ) and takes a few weeks and should be done only after the other modifications i list but it will take your rifle to the Amazing stage ! But, if you just do what I have listed above and skip the E2 system you still will have a Very reliable rifle but the E2 will go longer , well into the crazy dirty chamber stage and still allow the case to be extracted. So the difference is how many rounds you can shoot before the chamber gets just SO damn dirty that the case sticks just enough to cause a failure. With all of the modifications including to the magazines I usually get around ( 750 - 850 ) rounds of the Nasty dirty Russian Bear steel ammo before I get a failure and have to clean the chamber real quick. but with the E2 system i get up to ( 1,000 - 1,100 ) before i get a sticking issue.
    You can obviously run that round count up by using a higher quality & cleaner brass ammo and / or a Piston system that will keep the chamber much much cleaner. Then you can go a long way without an issue but it depends on where you want to be for the price.
    Good Luck

    I was able to shot the ASC mags if I didn't store the ammo in the mag, but when I kept a loaded ASC mag for a number of months the mag wouldn't feed the ammo right. I did the same thing with the C Products mag (I stored it loaded even longer than the ASC mag) and it worked 100% with no issues. Based on that experience I won't buy ASC mags even for 5.56/223.

    One of the possible solutions to reduce or eliminate the nose dive is to remove about one inch of material from the front part of the mag (the front wall, where the tip of the rounds drag), I know that removing one inch of material sounds excessive, but if the two top rounds don't have a mag wall in front of them to rub against, then they can't hang up on it. I have done it to mine and it works, of course that's a lot of grinding, so use your ingenuity and do it however you think is best for you, if you do it at all.

      I believe one of the main problems of these mags, especially the ASC, is the finish paint, that’s why the follower feels so rough and makes squeaky sounds when pushed down manually.
      If they left the metal bare on the inner walls, or better yet, placed the mag casing in polishing tumblers to polish the inside walls and paint only the outer walls, the mags would run much better, like AK47 mags.
      I’ve greased the inner walls of ASC mags and the follower moved 5 times better up and down, but I think a better solution would be to use a polishing wheel and polish smooth the inner walls especially towards the top side of the mag, the inside of the feeding lips, and the high points of the ridges, that will allow the steel cartridges to slide much better into position and out of the mag feeding lips.
      All that extra work that manufactures should have done in a polishing tumbler, so easily.

      Yeah my 10.5 inch barrel I had to open the gas port. Was short stroking with a light weight buffer and spring. This was the very last result after I ruled out the mags, bcg. Once I did that I was able to put the regular carbine spring back in the gun and a H-1 buffer. Now it runs flawless and the recoil impulse is nice.

    I dont want to be critical here, just an observation. In the beginning when he removed the spring in the ASC mag the tallest portion of the spring was oriented to the rear of the body of the magazine and follower. Then after the mods and the follow up range trip he said the rounds were nose diving and therefore wouldnt chamber. At the range he stated the tallest portion of the spring went to the front of the follower. I wonder if this was the reason one ASC mag worked and the other didnt. I agree my ASC mags needed some minor mods to the body to function properly too. I happen to like your videos and in depth approach to builds. Keep up the good work

    perhaps the kinked up portion of the spring on the asc magazine is meant to go to the front to push up the nose of follower? I also notice the retaining/feed lips on the asc magazine are a little bit longer than on the c products magazine which may make for a less ideal feed angle...

    • @ginsboy2003
      @ginsboy2003  7 років тому

      Could be that part should go to the front. I was pretty surprised to see the ASC spring about 4-5 inches shorter also. When I removed the material that was cutting into the sides of the cases, it did move the mag lips back slightly, maybe tweaking them upward slightly or moving them back more would help.

    • @cubaniton74
      @cubaniton74 3 роки тому

      In 1911 guns, the front part of the mag lips are slightly bent up to allow the cartridge’s nose to rise slightly and begin aligning with the barrel’s chamber, so maybe bending just a bit the front of the mag lips of the ASC mags, will help the cartridge feed better and avoid getting caught on the front edge of the mag bring that the nose of the cartridge will be just a bit higher when it reaches that point.
      Also in regards to the ASC mag spring, flatten the kinked top loop of the mag spring, make it look identical to all AK mag springs and the C Products mag spring, and also install it like all AK springs, with the end of the spring pointing to the rear of the mag, try installing it both ways and you’ll see that one way makes the mag feed much better than the other.

    Great video, but not enough there was enough info on the rifle/pistol. If that is a pistol length gas system with mil-spec buffer set up, I would say over gassed and needs a stiffer spring as someone else suggested and/or a heavier buffer. Also, C-Mags need a good slap to properly seat. Once I learned that, Ive had many rounds trouble free on numerous builds with C-Mags. .

    @ 16:00 you show the front of the follower. I would take 1/8 " off the bottom of the "leg" and smooth the cut, try it again. Mr Guns n Gear had great success doing this with an AK74 mag, look up the video. One other thing I'm not hearing about is Wolff xtra power magazine springs, which would be the first place I'd go after fixing the follower. OK, long vid and you did the spring!

    I wonder if some of the problems noted are due to the pistol configuration. I know that pistol AR are problematic even in 5.56, so I would like to see this same test done with a rifle configuration. I have an ASC 7.62x39 magazine and it has worked without any problems from day one. Anderson lower with PSA upper (using the enhanced firing pin). I'm going to try a C Product also to see if I notice any differences.

    • @ginsboy2003
      @ginsboy2003  7 років тому

      The C-products mags still needed a little tweaking. Using an AK mag spring in an ASC magazine seems to be a common fix on the 7.62x39 forums when your rounds aren't coming up fast enough to be picked up by the bolt. With the mags I had, doesn't matter whether you had a pistol or rifle, the metal still needed to be removed so they would work.

  • @johnmcpherson8908
    @johnmcpherson8908 7 років тому +10

    I've been in injection molding for over 20 years. It looks like your problem with the ASC follower is due to mold damage. It looks like whoever does the molding for C-Products takes better care of their molds. You can tell by the smoother surface and the lack of a parting line flash that you find on the ASC follower. If you ask me, ASC is using an older mold to produce their follower.

    Good luck finding the C-products mags... Also, you need to be careful with the follower, if it gets too small, it with potentially catch the side of the mag at more of an angle because of the expanded space. So just polish them lightly and knife off the burs, don't sand them down completely. Does that gun have an M4 feed ramp?

  • @ericjones3146

    I think the issue of the bullet hanging up on the front lip maybe be negated by the bullet being guided upwards by the barrel ramp before it exits the magazine. I would like to see how the bullet travels out of the magazine when installed in the firearm. The other areas on the sides of the mag lips is probably the important issue to deal with. Do you seat your bullets to back of the mag after you load them? how are the mags working now? That was some great groups on the target, what distance were you shooting? What optic were you using?

    • @ginsboy2003
      @ginsboy2003  6 років тому

      I seat the bullets to the back of the magazine. The mags work great now after tweaking. I've also learned some people overcome the magazine problems with an extra power buffer spring. I really don't think that is fixing the problem but as long as it works for them. The first optic we put on was a cheap NCstar holo sight. Now I have a Vortex sight on it. My son shoots better with this than he does his AR at short ranges.

    ginsboy2003, very good video. when i called R.F.'S they said to use ASC Mag.'s i bought 2 - 16" complete x39 uppers for $199.00 each. so i had worries but they worked but had same issue with the 10 mags ASC i bought from "44mag.com" but i studied them and came up to same that you did. lol. now i have 2 complete 30 cal. carbines for apox. $550.00 each. But since after buying the ASC Mag i bought 10 C Mags and had issues with them out of the box too. But once i did what you did they both work very well now. just wish Magpul would make some x39 mag.'s but after emailing them they said "magpul at this time has no plans making them". So we have to just tweak either mag's till we can get better ones. no big thing. thanks, BTW, nice to shoot .30cal. for .22 cents a round.

    • @ginsboy2003

      I can't understand why'd they'd recommend ASC. When I asked a buddy at work about the two mags, he just said to go with C-Products since they make the mags. for the US military. Didn't research to see if they do or not, but the steel in them is definitely harder than in the ASC mags and quality control is a lot better!

    • @MegaBait1616
      @MegaBait1616 7 років тому

      agreed, but i emailed R.F.'s several times about this issue. i didn't want any problems with x39 build then one of their techs gave me a phone number to call. i called him asked how can they sell uppers so cheap, and if their uppers were reliable? he said they buy close outs from all over the place, they open gas port little bit on x39's, give an enhanced firing pin too. then what mag.'s should i get he said ASC mags so i made sure i got them and had same issue as yours but i also figured out same to make them work. i stripped the mag and filed, stoned, front n sides to a mirror finish and all is good. but i have 10, 20, 30 rd's now and in the 30 rder's my spring looks longer than on yours. maybe they changed the springs ? any way good luck with your pistol now hope all is good. BTW, Do you have a video on repairing milsurp wood stocks? like cracks, finishing, bringing them back to good service again? be safe n thanks.

      MegaBait56 I'm going to look at my firing pin and compare it to another. I have some Russian ammo I bought 10 years ago that will not fire no matter how many time I rechamber and pull the trigger. Maybe I need an extra power hammer spring. These dang ASC mags shouldn't be kits we have to spend so much time on. I do have a video on the repairs I did on my Nepal Gahendra stock where I removed some rot and filled a crack. It might give you some ideas. In this video I only describe the work but you will get the idea. ua-cam.com/video/0g-Kj2MpGto/v-deo.html

    Those are great groups. You've got 5/8 of an epic gun. Either lesson the gas (which could result in a fail to cycle) or get a heavier buffer (spring or buffer weight) your mags arent your issue.

    • @robertpagel8951
      @robertpagel8951 2 роки тому

      Hey Vet. I'm confused by your comment you say to lessen the gas or use a heavier buffer and spring right? If he was to use a heavier buffer with the bolt doing what its doing would make matters worse because he doesn't have enough gas pressure as is.

    I had the same problem with ASC mags for my Windham AR 7.62x39. I received ASC mags for my Windham 5.56 so I assumed they were using the same company for the 7.62x39. You know what they say about 'assume'...

  • @Subgunman
    @Subgunman 7 років тому

    Is there a stiffer spring available for the bolt buffer? This would seem more logical to change instead of modifying all the mags. In a SHTF situation one does not have time to tweak magazines especially if you find a stache in the field someone had concealed.

    • @ginsboy2003
      @ginsboy2003  7 років тому +1

      In a SHTF situation you're probably not going to find 7.62x39 AR mags unless they are yours. Still just not that common. Stiffer spring may cause failures to feed as well unless you enlarge the gas port.

    That awkward moment when you just bought 2 FDE 7.62x39 ASC mags for your brand new AR build and then watched this video!!! GD IT! :/ We shall hope and see now. So, Ive had this issue before with an AR10 ASC mag i bought from Midway, it was labeled AR Stoner on their site and its most definetly not Stoner as the mag has ASC on the floor plate and follower. However, i was able to fix the .308 mag by polishing the lips and follower, and dremeling down the tab at the front of the mag, where the neck of the case would catch on the body. Cycles fine now but your left with that feeling of not being 100% reliable. Its obvious that the people in the cleanup department at ASC are permanently out to lunch, the burrs left on that .308 mag were freakin dangerous and they made me laugh out loud. Come on people @ ASC, do your job!! If these 2 new FDE 30 rounders are like the AR10 mag ill be pissed, but ill know at least how to fix them. Glad I have a legit AR Stoner 10 round in case these ASC are bad. Thanks for the video!

ASC mags are paperweights and after the purchase the company doesn't care about you they don't return emails if you have a issue that might cost them money . I mean they're fine for the range if you only put a few bullets in at a time .. maybe the C stands for California compliant? ASC overpriced and they don't work. After using these mags for some time, I noticed the front lip of the mag was flaring our from the rounds being smashed into the wall of the mag(7:10). These mags are just simply trash imo.

    I dont like your gun safety at the range. You are pulling the trigger several times while not looking down the sights or braced for the shot. This is an accident waiting to happen, especially with an unreliable weapon.
