Why does it have to be Skill OR Luck? I would say he's a skilled poker player who got lucky a few times in your video. To win any tournament though your going to have to get lucky a few times.

@@TheLeopard2A6 I don‘t want to offend you but poker is more difficult then chess. Because in chess theres always the same goal and only a few different plays but its very difficult to make these plays at the right time, I know. Is this a serious question? Fedor was easily the best tournament player aged under 25 back in the day - by far Maybe even the best at one point regardless of age
There is a skill to playing a style that has a chance to win big tournaments. There is also luck to actually winning as many as Fedor did. It's a bit like a guy who hits a hole in one at the US Open - you have to be amazing at golf to do it, and most people who are amazing at golf will still never do it just because they didn't get lucky.
I believe Fedor to be an accomplished poker player. He has spent numerous years studying the art of poker and continues to hone his skills in order to adapt to the ever-evolving world of poker. Skill as opposed to luck is a more consistent aspect of poker (making it ideal for measuring success in poker, thus, consistent winnings are indicative of skill as opposed to luck). This is evident by the fact that 10%-15% of all poker players consistently win and actually make money whereas a large majority lose. Similarly, the Top 10%-15% of all tournament fields are professional poker players with a small distribution of 'lucky' amateurs far and few in between. We all understand that luck is a huge part of the game. Winning your flips, running hot, putting your money in bad and sucking out is the gamble or 'luck' portion of poker. Fedor conveniently flops set of 99's vs KK's, rivers 2 pair in Q7 vs 97's, and calls with AK after a shove with 65 heads up. This is not skill...this is pure luck (Recall: Duhamel vs. Affleck 2010 WSOP). Nothing impressive here, in fact, the opposite. He was in terrible shape, totally dominated in the first two hands and got LUCKY. Finally picks up a premium hand when facing a shove with 56 for an easy call to win the tournament. No professional poker player can go on a winning streak, the way Fedor did winning back-to-back-to-back tournaments without suffering any major bad beats or run bads. Having said that, in my opinion, at this level of competition, poker skills (ranges, live reads, charts, percentages, odds, etc) become somewhat obsolete. As most of these players are at the same or similar skill level where the difference in advantage is marginal at best (unless playing an amateur). Thus when the skill becomes obsolete, lady luck takes over!!!
4:30 if Greenwood ever check call, check call, checks 89, which he does- he should with 88 blockers shove for pot after Fedor's river bet and rep the 89 flopped straight.
As a hobby Poker player to me this skill vs luck debate is really interesting. Yesterday I a played a tournament became chip leader by in me eyes good reedes etc. Then I 4 bet AQ in position to get called by J2 in the bb. Flopp QJ2. He checks I bet he shoves I call. Almost my whole money was gone. Who the fck calls a 4 bet out of position with J2? My point is there‘s no way you can win a tournament without a ridiculous amount of luck. Maybe in the long run it changes but this happens ro me all the time. So to me this game is first of all luck and then comes the skill in. What do you think? And for those who are saying I have to fold AQ here: of course there are hands that are beating me like 22 or JQ but it was also a possibility that he shoves as a bluff cause he thought I was just c-betting because of his check. If you let go such strong hands and only call with the nuts u are a nit who will win nothing.
Of course all poker players that make it big are LUCKY. Even with all the skill in the world u know how lucky u gotta be for ur hands to hold up n not get bad beat.
