    What sort of spray paint did you use ? Acrylic ?

    Brandnew. I think it is'nt. Still paint around the letters visible. I can do it better. Slice a union in half. Rub the flat side over the surface. The union juice will fill the little holes in the surface of the headstone. After the paintjob, and the cleaning there will no paint be left.

    I sure was wondering why you didn't use molasses! LOL I have never seen stones with children and dates like this before. I love this idea.

    • @BottandSonsMonument
      @BottandSonsMonument  Рік тому

      The purpose of the molasses is to keep the paint from going on the unpolished areas of the stone because it is super hard to get off. However when you have a polished surface, the paint will scrape right off. The back of the stone is all polished, hence we didn't need to use molasses. Great question though.

    To Frank Timmermans: I just painted my Granite headstone and the little pores in the granite were speckled with white paint, after I cleaned off the surplus. I wish I had seen your comment about the Onion. Does it really work? And how can I clean the white speckles in the little crevices and pores.?? I am an amateur at this and was badly advised by a monumental mason, though his work is no better. Also how do you clean off your surplus paint?...

      We have found that paint that is used for natural rock or that is used for masonry work well, brand name or a generic brand did not make a huge difference. Great question.

    What about lead lettering that’s level with the surface of the grave stone, how do you re blacken the letters? The reason I’m asking is because me and my girlfriend cleaned her mums gravestone and the cleaner took all the black of and now the lettering is all silver and lead colored.

    Would this process also work on a Marble headstone's that were originally filled with lead? It still has some of the lead in place but someone decided to clean the headstone using a bleach to whiten the stone and the solvent has caused a lot of the lettering to fall out. The stone is white and I was thinking of using either a black paint of a dark grey graphite auto motive body fillier, then sanding it back? The original wholes from the lead were drilled in so that they should also hold the body filler.

    I missed your point why you didn't use your molasse technique?

    • @BottandSonsMonument
      @BottandSonsMonument  2 роки тому +1

      The reason being is because the back of the Stone is polished so the paint will not stick to the polished surface. You must use Molasses on all unpolished parts of the stone because the paint will stick to it.

  • @rog9601

    It looks great, but when you give instructions on what to do and use, you need to specify for example, what paint you are using, it does not have to be a brand, but what you are using.

      In the video we are using the paint we get from our stone suppliers, but any spray paint that says it will bond to stone or concrete will do the job!

    Mr. Bott, couldn't you spray a very light coating of clear first to fill the crevasses and then the white? (compatible with the finishing white paint of course). Might be better than onion juice but I don't know about that..

    • @adrianzuniga7170

      You have an excellent idea! If a person will mask the headstone as in this video (possibly with painters tape that leaves little residue) and cut nice outlines around the letters. Then spray the exposed letters with clear spray paint. (This should fill in the pores on the stone.) Then spray the desired color on top of the clear coat. That way when the excess paint is scraped off there is no colored residue left on the stone. The paint is contained and remains only in the grooves of the letters. If any clear residue in the pores is visible around the letters it will only be in the nicely cut squares that were made. It will look like a planned highlighted area.

      I'm no expert in this area but my gut feeling watching this video is that this guy may be scratching the stone with his xacto knife, razor blade, and polishing stone. Not sure if headstones are coated with a seal that may also be getting damaged via the methods shown.

    • @TheGchiu
      @TheGchiu 3 роки тому

      @@CoryMetcalfe granite is harder than steel. You'll blunt your steel knife that's why they don't recommend using granite as a cutting surface. It's also way harder than the glass stone he's using. I think it's the same stuff you use to clean BBQ with.

    • @BottandSonsMonument
      @BottandSonsMonument  2 роки тому

      Paints on headstones don't really fade, they flake out. Most times when the paint appears to be faded that is because the stone is dirty. We always recommend that you clean your headstone before you try and repaint it. Once cleaned, look at the paint again and if you see it "flaking" out then there is a good chance you need to repaint it.

      Ed yes there are ways of sandblasting and techniques to have lettering raised or use the polish and removing it to get an unpainted look that will last but it will be a different technique on each of the different granite's, great question thank you.
