  • I've been designing buildings in the UK for almost 20 years and that means having to deal with the building regulations. The regs touch almost every aspect of building design in the UK and some people feel they go too far. A few even think they shouldn't exist at all. While I have problems with some aspects of the building regulations, I strongly believe we need them. This video shows footage from TikTok where regulations appear to be different. Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

would love a video on what aspects of the regs are too rigid or dated. theses examples are clear so it'd be interesting to hear your thoughts on less obvious problems with the current regs and what can be done to improve them

Actually when i watch various home/ pro builders over in the USA i notice how far their building codes are behind the rest of the world, some states don't have any at all so the home owner can build pretty much what/ how they want. Those states that do have building codes are are so far behind especially with insulation it's unbelievable. Some don't require a membrane or insulation under concrete slabs, and those that do require it ( usually the colder states) on require 50mm of insulation. I think part of the problem with our regs in the UK is they are not thought through when updated on how they will affect older homes that are not that well insulated etc.

We need regulation everywhere! The Thatcher government's policies on agriculture, particularly its deregulation of the meat industry, played a role in the spread of BSE. In the 1980s, the government relaxed regulations on the use of MBM, allowing it to be fed to cattle of all ages, including calves. This increased the risk of younger cattle being exposed to the BSE prion.
In addition, the government failed to implement effective testing and surveillance programs for BSE, which allowed the disease to spread undetected for many years. As a result, by the time BSE was officially recognized in the UK in 1986, the disease had already spread widely through the cattle population all over Europe.
The deregulation of the meat industry and the government's failure to implement effective regulation are considered to be key factors that contributed to the emergence and spread of BSE in the UK. These factors have raised concerns about the safety of the UK's food supply and the government's ability to protect public health.

For me, the bigger problem is writing (and reading) the seemingly endless reports. The time it takes drains one's will to live. Let's see what shall I do next, a Construction Management Plan, a Context Report or perhaps something in relation to Health and Safety? The joys.
    I sympathise.

@@RealLifeArchitecture In some states there are local regulations, but nationally we don't. So yes people build anything anywhere in most states. The few states with regulations Don't have details like you have in the UK (I worked with a RIBA Architect in Lagos so we used your regulations) We're all pushing the politicians to pass the National Building Code as Law. Clealry not their priority at this time 🥲

In the past four decades, statistics show that over 460 buildings have collapsed in Nigeria at an increasing rate yearly; this requires drastic actions to curb the menace.

I know that you're aware but strictly speaking UK building regulations don't exist, as building regs are devolved. Scottish building regulations are very different to English ones.

@@RealLifeArchitecture I know you are aware but more for viewers of videos. Good example is the fire regulations which have begun to diverge substantially over time.

the only thing u cant rely on is common sense... greed, stupidity or lazyness is always stronger... thats what regulations are for....
