  • Every year thousands of gallons of water fall from your roof into your yard. Storing that water up for your garden or pool could take a nice chunk out of your water bill. Kristopher explains some of the benefits and his own plan to build a rainwater collection system on his property.

    Been doing this for years in Aus. All new houses must have rain water collection tanks. My whole household lives on rain water only. have not paid a water bill in the last 10 years

      Can you believe, in our town in MA, it’s illegal to collect rainwater. Money hungry politicians at work.

      I used to live in Cumbria (uk) only since I moved to Madrid, I realised how much I took grass for granted.

    I have 2 stock tanks sitting under downspouts so whenever it rains I get about 450 gallons of water. I bought a little electric pump to drop in and pump the water out to my gardens. The tanks were a little more expensive than a bunch of 55 gallon barrels but they hold lots of water and look much nicer.

    I believe that water from the rain is better than other water for our plant. Because rain is a natural water

    Please make sure you make an update video of how your rainwater system construction is going. I enjoy watching your videos, thanks for making them : )

    I carefully group laundry items to get to the full capacity of my front load clothes washer. Roof water is directed with downspouts that water the trees, plants, and vines. No lawn gets watered with city water, only the trees do when there's been little rain.

    I have 2 55 gallon drums. One is gravity fed, the other one I got smart with and bought an electric water pump from harbor freight and mounted it inside the barrel. But i'm in Denver and we barely get enough rain to fill the barrels over the course of the summer. I should put a 3-4K tank and collect the snowfall, but that would be illegal. I can grow cannabis, but collecting over 110 gallons of rain water is illegal. LOL

      lol, that is a bit silly. Thanks for the tip about the pump at harbor freight though - I'll have to look into that.

    check your local codes. Here in California water use laws are major issue.

      That's very true! It's always important to check local law before getting started.

    Denver just started to allow rain collection but only on small quantities so far... hope to make that improvement in the near future.

    Did you set up your own rain water harvesting system? We are in Houston, TX where there is a lot of rain. Interested to know what I can possibly recreate.

    In my Chicago suburb the city SO wants us NOT to let the water just run off that for FREE we can get up to four 55 gallon rain barrels delivered to the house with much of the hardware required to connect it..

    • @MidwestManMountain
      @MidwestManMountain 7 років тому

      I got four. 2 - black and 2 - light grey. Hooked up old hose that I drilled holes in to act as soaker hose.

    I have had problems with algae growth in rain barrels. I wonder if you can touch on that in your next video.

    • @MidwestManMountain
      @MidwestManMountain 7 років тому

      That's interesting. I intend on adding filters to my setup, so perhaps I can avoid that conundrum.

      ...the less light getting into rain barrels, the less chance for algae growth. A rain barrel with walls designed to block all light...is best.

      I always keep mines out of the sun and i also put 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide which keeps anything from growing in the rainwater.

      Negative.. You can do what you want as long as it causes no harm or loss to others. Legal isn't lawful.. Under common law (law of the land) you are your own sovereign, self governing.
