      @@ZEFElectric Thanks :) I actually have one question. I heard that the "Maximum battery charge level" is important factor for battery degradation. Do you remember which settings you were using most of the time?

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric  3 роки тому +2

      Correct, they say charge speed and charge/discharge level contributes to battery degradation.
      Discharge: One general tip I was literally CRAZY to follow was not to let the car stand still with empty battery. I heard this is more dangerous than full charge. It's OK to discharge to zero but make sure the car is plugged in right away at destination. As a tip, always carry an extension cord with you, it turned out to be useful in many occasions. In few occasions where there was nothing available at destination, (and I thought will be) I run the car in "Charge mode" for few minutes to give me at least 5 Km of range (approx. 10%).
      Maximum charge: GTE has quite some good schedule departure planning from the car infotainment or remotely from the WeConnect app. You can choose minimum charge level (the car will automatically charge to that level and then wait closer to departure time to charge to desired level), maximum charge level and speed. Speed you can choose between 5A, 10A, 13A and max which is 16A (all at 220V). So, I was scheduling charging according with my next needs and plan full charging just before the trip.
      Scheduling: I was having preset the following charging settings: 80% at 5A, 100% at 5A, 80% at MAX and 100% at MAX (all with minimum level at 40%). I was choosing from these settings depending on my departure plans and estimated electric range needed. In the scheduling you can also plan to pre-condition the car which was very nice especially in winter or extreme hot days at the seaside. AC but also charging settings can also be controlled and adjusted from the app in case plans change. When changing speed or charge level, the car/app will give you an estimate of the time needed to reach that level. Quite good and handy app but sometimes the app/car simply did not want to "talk" to each other :)
      Tip: In order to use the WeConnect app you will have to pay subscription to VW. That depends on the services you want or available for the car. In my case I had "E-remote" and "Guide & Inform Basic" last time I paid 95 EUR respective 135 EUR for 2 years subscription. I think newer cars have "Connected Car Module" as an option and will also offer additional services.

    • @Lascarnn

      @@ZEFElectric Seems like your attention to battery usage payed off! It's interesting how bigger the degradation would be if you had often allowed battery to stay at 0% or 100%. In my case it's important because when buying second hand you often don't know how the battery was treated.
      Preconditioning from home electricity really seems neat, especially if one has solar on the roof. :)
      All that info is very helpful, thanks again!

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, I paid lots of attention to that aspect and pushing myself to use the car on electric drive as much as possible.
      Passat 2015 GTE has 9,9kWh battery but only about 8,7kWh is actually available to use. That is intentional in order to protect the life of the battery.
      You can actually "measure" battery degradation but you need few things and a bit of time. You need to have access to a charging point that display (on the unit or in the charge app) the energy sucked during charge session. You go there with "empty" battery, drive around until the petrol engine kicks. Is important to be gentle with acceleration when getting close to empty so you do not "force" the petrol engine to kick in (I recommend to do this when outside temperature is above 10 Celsius or so). You activate the charge session and wait for about 2 hours 30 mins (choose MAX speed) to complete to 100%. Keep AC off and leave the car!
      On my car, when it was new, it took about 2h:45m to charge from 0% to 100% and get close to 8,7kWh per such charge session. I know there is some heat loss during the charging session but at least these were the numbers in my case.
      As a reference, in the last months, my car took 15mins less for a full charge and I was getting consistent results between 7,2kWh and 7,9kWh. Remember, outside temperature will also play a role here. After that, drive in ECO mode at about 80km/h (no AC/ventilation, hopefully flat dry surface and no wind) and you should get about 40 Km of pure electric range.

    Thanks for sharing your experience and a very useful information it helps a lot, only one question, any specific directions about best way how to charge the battery at home

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric  9 місяців тому +1

      Thank you and welcome here!
      If you have access with the car to a domestic socket, in my book that is best option for charging Passat GTE at home using the domestic to Type 2 adapter that usually comes with the car. Passat GTE does not really have option for fast charging so on domestic socket it takes about 4,5-5 hours for a full charge vs ~3 hours on 3,7kW (or powerful) AC Type 2 charger. If you plan to install a domestic Type 2 charger (in my book not needed for Passat GTE) you might want to consider a 7,4kW charger as that will be useful for a future full BEV car.
      Depending on your daily usage, you might want to limit the times you charge to 100% or at least schedule the charging in such a way to reduce the time the battery stay at 100% (they say that helps reducing degradation). Most important, don’t keep the car at 0%!
      Other than that, you can control the charging current (therefore power) in order to reduce the load on your domestic circuits if you have plenty of time available for charging (overnight for example).
      If your energy price is variable or you have solar panels you might also want to take advantage of that.
      I hope this helps.

      @@yunusemrearslan5211 as far as I know, for Lithium batteries short charging cycles around 50% are ideal for the health of the battery. Remember, when driving in the city there will be many small discharge-charge cycles, literally at every stop light ;) Degradation comes from age, extreme temperatures and extensive periods when battery is either fully charged or completely empty. Thank you very much for this very useful report. It is reassuring that the GTE seems so trouble free. Did you record the petrol consumption? I am looking for a 3 to 4 year old GTE, which should absolutely have the matrix IQ-light and the parking camera. Unfortunately, although the camera is often stated in advertisements, the IQ-light (which should automatically and temporarily black out the LEDs that could blind other traffic, and according to your review works perfectly) is rarely mentioned. Is there any way to spot this option in the car’s papers? Thanks again!

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric  Місяць тому

      Hello, welcome here!
      For me it was somewhat difficult to measure fuel consumption as most of my short distance driving was on full electric or a mix. Maybe the most relevant would be to say that my usual holiday drive was to have a full benzine tank at the NL/DE border on A12, drive all the way to Linz and still be left with 50-100km of range. So, let's say about 900km on decent highway driving following traffic and some speeding zones. I learned recently that my car had "adaptive LED" not really Matrix, difference being that "adaptive" seem to have some kind of mechanic way to follow cars while matrix is by turning on/off various elements of the light. Well, I can tell you the "adaptive LED" was already fantastic treating that shadow around upcoming it traffic in front. I do not believe you can identify that option from the papers of the car but is quite obvious on the photos by looking at the lights design. In some countries is part of some of the packages but you need to be familiar with the naming.
      3-4 years old is 2020+ which is about 4-5 years after the model of the car on the video and I believe VW added few improvements on these newer cars (e.g. better connectivity modules).
      I hope this helps and good luck with the purchase!

    Hey Florin and big thanks for sharing you experience with the GTE with us.
    What charging speeds does the car support?
    I'm thinking about stepping into the phev world and this car seems to be a robust option for the way I will be using the car.
    Do you remember the charging currents, Watt hours or other charging details this car has? I'm thinking about getting a 3 phase 11 kW home charger box if the car supports it.
    What charging speeds did you get during your ownership?

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric  3 роки тому +6

      Hi Bogdan, welcome here (o sa raspund tot in Engleza pentru alti vizitatori pe canal - merci)! Passat GTE does not support DC Fast charging or 3 phase AC charging. The fastest you can charge is at 3,7kW (AC 230V at 16A) and it takes about 2 hours 45 mins from zero to full charge. At domestic power socket, the power is limited to 2,3kW (AC 230V at 10A) and it takes about 4 hours for a full charge. You have many options to schedule charging and limit the amperes to 5A, 10A, 13A or MAX (16A).
      Getting a 3 phase 11kW home charger will be an “overdone” just for this car in my opinion but definitely a step ahead for the future. My recommendation will be for now to just have a solid separate circuit with domestic socket to start with. After all, 2h45’ vs 4h is not a game changer and you will most likely charge overnight anyway.
      As a separate note: When you choose a second hand, make sure the domestic adapter is inside the car (it came with one when new) and an additional type 2 cable. Missing one of these it will cost you few extra hundreds of euros.
      Edit: You can of course also choose to charge battery from the petrol engine if you select “Battery Charge” drive move. Not very efficient way but still an option to be considered in some situations (e.g. when your battery is empty and do not have a destination charger - never leave the car stationary with empty battery).

    Hi, thanks for the very informative video! :D I'm just curious to know if I should make the shift from my 2017 model Ford Mondeo Trend line (Standard edition) diesel to a VW Passat GTE Plug in Hybrid 2017 Highline since I have alot of distance to drive from home to work. And ofcourse also because diesel and all is already so expensive, but I just cant get myself to change from a diesel/petrol car to an electric vehicle since that is a huge jump for me. So right now I'm considering to make the move to plug in hybrid instead since that is a smaller step forward. The normal distance from my house to work is 30km and there is charging station by my house and at the work, so I have the opportunity to charge it between A and B. I mainly drive 100kmh speed on half the way and then around 60kmh speed on the other half of the way. But I dont know if it would be a good move to get a Passat GTE 2017 since I have no experience with Plug in hybrid at all (I have only driven diesel/petrol cars). But I really love VW Passat and have driven a Passat in many years with different models like 1997 (Patrol) , 2004 (Diesel) and 2011 (Diesel). And ofcourse Golf and the old Jetta. I hope you can give me some clear thoughts on it, thank you again! :)

      Hi Dominic, thank you and welcome here!
      The commute distance you are referring is about right for Passat GTE but on some days especially in cold winter you should expect the petrol engine to kick in for a short stretch. As long as you have opportunity to charge at work and at home I think you have a good business case for a change. If you plan to charge at public places, I recommend you to check prices in your area and do some calculations with an average consumption of about 20kWh/100km in moderate climate and about 25-30kWh/100km in cold winter - keep in mind that you will have about 7-8kWh usable battery capacity.
      Living with a PHEV is quite easy, you just need to get familiar with the charging network in your usual traveling area, get a charging card/app that is suitable for your charging habits (some they charge a fee per session, some per month and some are factoring that in the kWh price) and carry an extension cord in the car in case you have an opportunity to charge from a domestic socket 😉 You will instantly love the silent drive, the instant kick of the electric motor, the pre-conditioning function, the “magic” of the regenerative breaking and few more cool features you might get with GTE Highline (e.g. look for the Lane Assist option).
      With a full petrol tank and one charge, you can easily drive above 800Km on highway journeys (German highways 120-130Km/h with many speed restrictions lately due to roadworks or/and “stau” but also some “burst” areas with speed above 160Km/h). One of my “routine” was to fill tank at Shell A12 in The Netherlands and re-fill in Austria just at the border (Turmöl, Achleite) ~750 Km or even in Linz ~850Km (and still not be on complete zero). That is probably less then your current diesel powered car yet, quite decent.
      Go to one of the local dealers and arrange a test drive!
      In many countries in Europe, there are policies to discourage diesel and considering high prices (and demand) on cars right now, you might have an opportunity now to trade in your diesel car for quite some good value. Some even offers incentives for purchasing second hand hybrids or at least offer some tax advantages - check that as well. There are still quite some skeptics about the lifetime of batteries on PHEV/EVs and that might work in your favor as that keeps prices on second hand PHEV a bit lower yet, I know many are looking to get their hands on one as well. Occasionally I see these batteries on various online stores at decent prices (from scrap yards) and I’m quite sure soon we will start to see places that will refurbish/rework them at reasonable costs as well.
      I hope this helps but remember, getting a car (new/used) is always a gamble. Let me know if you need any additional info.

      Yes, almost two years of full EV, 50k Km and I still enjoy it very much. The only one aspect I miss from Passat GTE is the variant shape which is easy to load large items - note, I do not miss the space as Tesla M3 offers a lot, is just the loading shape occasionally I miss. The cost to run the EV is still ok, still below an efficient benzine car considering that most of my charging is on low AC power (cheaper comparing with DC) and occasionally free but let’s ignore that. These days I’m charging with 0,4 EUR/kWh and let’s say with an insane consumption of 20kwh/100km it will be 8EUR which is still below any equivalent class benzine car considering 1 litre benzine is 2,2EUR.

      Glad to hear and to see your interest. To answer your question, it depend very much on your driving style and charge habits/opportunity. Please check the description, I added two links with extreme consumption figures. On my daily usage I had the opportunity to charge regularly at work or public charging so it’s hard to say but I had weeks and weeks when the combustion engine did not even start. Every now and then, I had a regular drive (roundtrip) of approx. 300 KM and consumption was around 4,5/100 Km on Dutch highways (most limited to 100 Km/h and only one charge before leaving - drive in ECO mode). On long journey with a full charge and one full tank (I think is about 50 L) I could go about 900+ Km (car fully loaded with family of four). On the other extreme, sport GTE mode most of the time (fun mode :)), I was hammering the car really bad for 2200+ Km with an average speed 123Km/h and consumption was just 8,6L/100 Km which I find quite good under the circumstances and the size of the car.

      Is quite hard for me to answer that as I hardly drove starting with empty battery and if so not for a substantial amount of time/distance. Data will be misleading for the first part of such a drive because the car will run petrol engine a bit more than usual in order to bring the state of charge of the battery to something like 10-15%.

      Well, it depends over what distance and driving conditions (city/highway). With a full tank of 50 litres and full battery on German highway I could do about 850-900 Km and not be completely empty driving with the traffic speed. That will be let’s say about 5 lites per 100 km.

      @ZEFElectric  4 місяці тому +1

      Hello, welcome here! If I understand your dilemma correctly, you are looking at TDI vs GTE. Considering the purpose for your use, I imagine running cost is an important factor to consider. You will need to look at aspects like road tax (in many countries Diesel cars are highly taxed while hybrids are incentivised), maintenance costs/frequency (I believe diesel is generally a bit more expensive to maintain and on GTE you will hardly have to change breaks due to the regenerative breaking), fuel costs in your country (in many countries diesel is cheaper vs benzine) and charging capabilities/costs domestic/public/pricing (not a major aspect as the range with a full charge is not that big but it can contribute to some savings over time). You might also want to consider a second hand full EV considering the main purpose of your usage. Following some internet reviews, for instance Hyundai Ioniq (classic Ioniq) seems to age quite well and within your budget. I hope this helps.

    Salutare! Ma bucur ca am dat peste video-ul tău, chiar foarte interesant. În acest moment sunt în căutarea unei Skoda Superb iV, care, din cate am înțeles, este cam aceeași masina ca și Passat GTE, drept urmare as avea câteva întrebări, dacă ma poți ajuta și lamuri:
    1. Cum este cu pornirea la rece? Ai avut momente în care sa nu fi putut porni masina din cauza ca afara este prea frig pt baterie?
    2. Cat de des o încarci? Cum locuiesc la bloc (și nu am priza), planul meu ar fi sa o încarc cam de 3 ori pe săptămână si sa circul în mare parte în mod hybrid. Consideri ca ar merita un hybrid pt stilul asta de mers fata de una pe benzina?
    3. Într-un concediu pe distante mai lungi, unde nu as avea acces la priza, ar fi viabila o masina de acest gen în ideea în care as baga exclusiv benzina și în rest as merge pe mod hybrid (pt a nu lăsa bateria sa ajungă la 0)?

      Salut Mircea, bine ai venit pe canal!
      Intr-adevar, Skoda Superb iV este construita pe aceeasi platforma ca Passat GTE dar varianta imbunatatita (cu bateria de 13kWh), o masina “superba”.
      Nu, nu vei avea nici o problema cu “pornirea la rece”, in cel mai rau caz, cam de la minus 5-10 grade Celsius in jos, vei observa ca motorul pe benzina va porni chiar daca ai inca bateria Li-Ion incarcata (si esti in modul E-Mode). Este o protectia a bateriei - prin caldura de la motorul termic va incalzii bateria.
      In cazul meu (in Olanda) o incarcam aproape zilnic (la birou in timpul saptamanii si la incarcatoare publice in weekend). In Romania o incarcam la priza de 220v (la curte). Prin calatorii mai lungi prin Romania mai incarcam in reteaua Renovatio cat timp a fost gratuit (acum au o promotie impreuna cu Kaufland) sau tot de la retea domestica de 220v daca exista posibilitatea (am gasit mai mereu - eveam mereu un prelungitor de 10m la mine). Daca o incarci de 3 ori pe saptamana nu e chiar asa rau, mai ales ca are bateria mai mare.
      La drumuri mai lungi, desi este o masina mare, vei fi surprins de consum intre 5-6l/100Km (fara menajamente) in principiu datorita energiei regenerata la franare. Am vorbit putin despre asta in materialul cu Passat-ul dar am facut si un material separat despre acest luctu cu o alta masina: ua-cam.com/video/-2NhWDW-CC8/v-deo.html
      Sper ca raspunsurile mele sa te inspire si iti urez bafta in cautarea masinii dorite.

      We have a ramp to aid him getting in and out but there is nowhere to store the ramp in the boot, so it has to go in the rear passenger compartment which effectively renders the car a two seater.
      The passat or Skoda superb is a good compromise as it gives us the space for the dog and ramp, is a lower load height, and we can do 90% of our trips using cheap electric power only.
      A win/win. 👍
      Since watching your video I have watched other reviews of the passat, it seems that it does not have electric memory seats, is that correct?

I recall having this discussion with my regular VW dealer and they say that after certain age/mileage at each service they assess if the change is needed or not. Not sure what to say about that it definitely depends how the car was driven but I recall reading on various forums that at 5 years they recommend a change or at least a check on the condition of the belt. I used to drive in E-mode the first 15-20km, then put the car in Hybrid and use the last remaining E-range for the last stretch before arrival at the destination if I knew I had charging opportunity. I only switch the car in GTE when I wanted that occasional kick or felt like driving more sportive - usually alone in the car 😉
      Remember, GTE is a hybrid car so I assume specific components are designed for that. Note, even in GTE the engine will switch off if you are not driving sportive but I agree, it will be less often than hybrid. Also, in GTE, any ECO setting of the car is gone - e.g. HVAC, engine will be maintained at higher RPMs, the gear will be generally set a bit lower for better response, regen is set to high, the car will keep the battery charge level a bit higher. I will not recommend keeping it in GTE for the reason you mention but for fun… oh YES.

    Thanks for the video! Not many personal experience videos out there. I'm currently trying to decide between the GTE Passat and the V60 Hybrid Volvo. The Volvo probably consumes less fuel, but the Passat has a bigger trunk. We'll have two mid-size dogs so it's a tough choice.

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric  2 роки тому +1

      Are you considering brand new models or second hand? The first V60 plug-in was my initial preference but the trunk is way smaller (the “floor” on the trunk is actually higher then the trunk door) and the shape of the trunk will also make it less practical. Price range for V60 was also higher comparing with GTE back in 2015. GTE has a “boxy” trunk and flat floor which I believe is ideal for your purpose especially if you plan to install a cage for the dogs. The newest V60 models (I think after 2018 or so seem to have similar size trunk with GTE although I’m not sure about less consumption. I highly recommend you install a protective film on the bumper in the loading area - I had one installed by myself and provides great protection against scratches (I order it pre-cut online).

    • @SoulRollerFIN
      @SoulRollerFIN 2 роки тому

      I'm aware of the raised level of the trunk floor in the Volvo. That's my only concern about the car. I know the dogs will fit since there will be no need for a cagee, but maybe I'll install a cage wall.
      I'll be buying a used car, 2013-2015 model. There's a 2013 V60 selling under 15K euros at my local dealership, the cheapest GTE which is the 2015 model is about 19K.
      I've calculated the approximate yearly costs for the vehicles and the Volvo would be cheaper even if they sold for the same price. It all comes down to practicality and how the cars handle. Gotta test drive both.

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric  2 роки тому +1

      @SoulRollerFIN technically the two cars are quite different - AWD vs FWD, 2,4L diesel engine vs 1,4L petrol engine, electric engine on the rear axel vs integrated in the gearbox. That’s a tough choice indeed but considering the V60 is a diesel I will expect at this point to have quite some kilometers on the odometer. Another aspect is the road tax - in The Netherlands weight and type of engine matters when road tax is calculated. V60 is heavier and diesel which leads to approx. 50EUR per month higher road tax.
      V60 with the facelift looks good from outside but interior looks a bit outdated for my preference.
      Good luck with making the right decision.

      Hi Stephen, welcome here. It is true that there is about 350 Kg added weight on the GTE version. However, the torque is 400Nm (from 200Nm or so) and you get 220 HP (from 125 HP). Power/weight is the last one I will worry on this car if you change from a "basic" 1.4L version. Note, on the cargo space you lose is about 10% and fuel talk is also smaller. I think you've made a good choice even more so as the 2021/22 model is coming with a slightly bigger battery 13kWh and some minor tech improvements.
      If you did not order the car yet and look for a bigger range, I noticed the 2021/22 Mercedes C350e model comes with 25,4kWh battery pack which should give you easily 100km of real world range and option to fast charge. I’m not fun of Mercedes but the specs of the new PHEVs they release is quite impressive.

      Hi Francesco, welcome here and congratulations with your purchase, I can feel the “pain” of your waiting :)
      That extra button “Mode” is an option on some VW (not only for GTE) and it will indeed tune the car settings to be a bit more economic, normal, sportive or individual settings that you might prefer and on cars with Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) will adjust these settings as well. In the case of GTE, you have the GTE button so you do not really need that “Mode” for the sport purpose but I definitely noticed the difference in energy consumption vs cabin climate response (both AC and heating) between ECO and NORMAL. Also, Matrix LED are not adaptive in ECO. You have to go to the car Vehicle status page, then to settings (down-right) -> scroll down until you see the option Driver Assistance Settings and there you will see already a "Driving programme" field where you can choose between Sport, Eco and the other options.

      Right now a bit disconforted by the slowliness of home charge via cable. About 1.5h to gain 8km range (!). Tomorrow I'll try from a public "laadpaal" and see how that goes. Still wondering if a Wallbox (16A - 3.7KW) charges faster than a Cable (10A). It should be so I am evaluating buying that.
      The B mode is nice to try but I believe it more efficient that the D mode when the car is going downhill. In a city, it seems to me more efficent to use the mode D and get the car to roll out covering much more distance compared to the B mode where the engine really holds the car rolling out. The time that it is recharging is too short that I hardly believe it will be more efficient than just letting the car roll out in D mode.

      There are Hybrids and Plug-in Hybrids or PHEV. The “normal” Hybrids have a relatively small battery (around 2 kWh) and is charged purely by regenerative breaking and/or by the combustion engine. With the PHEVs, the battery is generally larger (around 8-13 kWh) and indeed, you can plug it in when desired and when you have the chance to do so. You can run Passat GTE on electric only (E-mode) up to a speed of 130 km/h above which the Hybrid mode will be activated and the internal combustion engine will be kicked in. You can switch between: E-mode (drive only electric up to 130 km/h), Normal (Hybrid mode in which the car will kick in/out the ICE as needed), Charge (“force” to charge the battery) and GTE (a sport mode when the car will combine the electric and ICE for the best acceleration approx. 8,6 seconds from 0-100 km/h).

      Hi Marko. Did you notice this happening when the battery is relatively low in the State Of Charge (electric range below 5-10km) or îs relatively cold outside? Once GTE goes in Hybrid, it will try to bring the battery to a display range of 10-15km and if is cold outside it will try to run the combustion engine for a bit longer to warm up the battery. In such circumstances, you will notice a symbol on the instrument cluster with an E in a circle which is crossed (E mode is not available). And indeed, when combustion engine runs cold (you will also notice slightly higher RPM’s) plus charging battery the fuel consumption is quite high but should not last for too long before either you can switch on E mode or just run hybrid without actively charging the battery.

    • @ZEFElectric

      In hybrid mode the car will behave as any other hybrid - keep kicking on and off the ICE engine depending on the driving conditions. When breaking, the car will use regenerative breaking to recuperate that energy and the process is quite smooth once you are used with. The transition between electric and hybrid drive is very smooth so that you hardly notice when the ICE goes on/off. In hybrid drive, the car will try to keep the battery charge level around 10-20 km of displayed range.

      Hi Lars. First of all, I'm not an expert on second hand cars but here is what I would do. I follow your thought: get a newer car with relatively high mileage -> better price and as you drive fewer kilometers that will compensate on the long run (I've done that myself few times with other cars). As any second hand car purchase, service history is important and a bit of luck I will say. As mentioned in my video, I will recommend to get the charging history of the car (not always easy, I know). Other than that, look for oil in gearbox to be changed STRICTLY at every 60.000 Km (they say this gearbox is great if maintained well), engine oil, filters and very important for that mileage is the timing belt (do some research on this) and maybe spark plugs. If you have never driven a GTE before, I suggest you test more than just one car as GTE is powerful and you can be “blinded” by the first car. GTE should shift gears very smooth (no jerky feel) and also in Hybrid mode you should hardly notice when is turning on/off the petrol engine. If you find any irregularities on this, treat that with suspicion. Test few so you have a reference to compare.
      I do plan to do a video and explain battery degradation test on a GTE as soon as the weather/covid permits and I can get my hands on a GTE for few good hours. SUBSCRIBE to get notified!

      Hello, welcome here! There are plenty of similar questions on the comments of this video which I will recommend you to read however, here are some specific answers to you.
      There are four ways that select the “behavior” of the car:
      1) There is a selector button for driving modes next to the “gear shifter”. This selects the “E-mode” (driving just on Electric motor), “Hybrid” (car will switch between ICE and Electric or/and both), “Charge” (car will charge the battery from ICE and increases regenerative breaking);
      2) There is a handy GTE Button in the console area which will put the car in the most sportive mode;
      3) By pulling the “gear shifter” down, you put the car in “B-mode” which is increasing regenerative breaking - recommended for driving downhill or in the city as a “one pedal drive” (the car will not get to a full stop);
      4) In the infotainment, you can select also some modes which are also linked to more than just the drive mode. E.g. lights, AC, steering so on. There are ECO, NORMAL, SPORT and INDIVIDUAL. I mainly use ECO for regular drives or NORMAL mainly in the night on dark roads. In ECO, matrix functionality of the lights(if equipped) will be turned off and the response of the AC is somewhat lagging but most of time is fine.
      Depending on your charging possibilities, in the city you will drive most of the time in E-Mode if you can charge the car before driving and this is the “default” mode of the car. When the state of charge is low or cold weather, the car will automatically switch to “Hybrid”. You can choose to override that and activate “Hybrid” a bit earlier if you know at destination there is no charging option. ECO is something in the general settings of the car (if the car has that option) which you will hardly need to adjust. On long journeys, you keep the car in “Hybrid” and enjoy, maybe occasionally switch to GTE when you want some action 😊
      With a full tank of GTE (50L benzine and full charge), I could easily drive above 800Km on highway journeys (German highways 120-130Km/h with many speed restrictions lately due to roadworks or/and “stau” but also some “burst” areas with speed above160Km/h). One of my “routine” was to fill tank at Shell A12 in The Netherlands and re-fill in Austria just at the border (cheaper over there - Turmöl, Achleite) ~750 Km or even in Linz ~850Km (and still not be on complete zero). That should give a fair indication of REAL consumption on highway. City drive, I could do easily >2000 Km with a full tank (and a lot of charging) as I had periods of weeks/months when the ICE engine was not turning on at all 😊On a full charge, you will do 20-40km depending on the climate and driving style.
      I hope this helps, SUBSCRIBE and stay tuned!

      Hi Petar. Thank you for your feedback. Please consider subscribing to the channel as I plan to upload some other interesting materials - not just with Tesla M3 :).
      I personally believe Passat GTE is a good buy but as any second hand car, is a bit of a lottery especially if you do not know the REAL history of the car.
      I will try to cover all your questions in this extensive reply here.
      The question about public charge cost is very relevant as there is a ”jungle” out there. Generally, cost will depend on the charge card provider and the charge point provider. Depending on your needs, you can choose the right card for you (frequency, coverage, fees vs price per kWh) and most of them provide an app where you can also check prices per charge point. I had/have NewMotion card (very good coverage but there was a fee per charge session) and prices per kWh at public charge points today are around 0,34-0,36 EUR at most places but can be as low as 0,23kWh at NewMotion charge points for instance. I will recommend you do a bit of research of what chargers are available in your area and check with card providers the prices for these chargers that you plan to use the most. Remember, as GTE has a relatively small battery (considering today full EVs), you will most likely charge often so you will be interested on a card with no (or low) fee per session. In my video I talk about my charge habits so you can do a cost simulation assuming you might do the same.
      There are many websites if you search “laadpas” but this one I find particularly good: laadpastop10.nl/
      There are many apps out there (I will shoot a video just about that and charging in general) but the most I used was “EV Charging” (from NewMotion aquired by Shell), “Chargemap” and “PlugShare” (very good for outside Netherlands).
      It’s true that charging can get extremely expensive if you fall into some traps mentioned below however these “traps” are usually visible on the app you use from the card provider.
      - Some charge points are charging per time. As GTE is charging slow, that can be extremely expensive very fast - this is not so much a problem in The Netherlands but something to be aware when you charge at more powerful charge points designed for quick/fast charging;
      - Some charge points have minimum fees;
      - Some charge points have idle fees (if you keep the car plugged after charging has finalized);
      - Some charge cards providers are invoicing fee per charge session (some with maximum amounts per month), fee per month or is free but price pe kWh are also different.
      Nothing to be scared of but more to be aware especially when you look for charging in a new place or abroad. In The Netherlands I have not seen such “traps” in usual charge places yet, I never charged on Highway Chargers (no need to) where some of the above aspects can be seen.
      Question about maintenance cost. As far as I know, there is no “special” maintenance for GTE vs a standard petrol car. I can argue is actually less needed but VW will still recommend the service intervals as if the car is driven just on combustion engine. One aspect to pay attention to is the oil exchange in the gearbox to be performed at strict intervals of 60.000 Km (never go over that). This car was maintained only at a local VW dealer and in February 2020 had a big service (around 120.000 KM) so I can share here some price information as a reference:
      - Extensive inspection (D 013990282) - 56,87EUR;
      - Replace spark plugs (D 984297814) - 187,55EUR;
      - Replace interior filter (D 986090301) - 47,19EUR;
      - Change DSG oil (D 982712646) - 326,71EUR;
      - Great Maintenance Service what Dutch call “Grote Onderhoudsservice” (D 0103D1B8A) - 237,16EUR;
      Last but not least, consumption. With a full talk of GTE (and full charge), I could easily drive above 800Km on highway journeys (German highways 120-130Km/h with many speed restrictions lately due to roadworks or/and “stau”). One of my “routine” was to fill tank at Shell A12 and re-fill in Austria just at the border (cheaper over there - Turmöl, Achleite) ~750 Km or even in Linz ~850Km.
      I hope this helps.

    Fantastic Video.
    I hope you can answer a few questions for our benefit
    1. Any tips for buying a used VW Passet GTE? Especially with regards to battery degradation.
    2. I live in London, UK. Which is increasing taxing motorists for having the privilege of owning a car. I have a family and own a diesel Audi A6. Which I sadly need to sell. (Search ULEZ for more details). I currently drive around 6500km/year. Mainly around town for shopping and some long distances to visit family and the occasional holiday. I don't have a charge point at home. Is a PHEV worth it for me, the casual driver.
    Thanks in advance

      I think 6500 km/year is an "insult" to any Diesel car especially an A6 :)
      I plan to shoot a video with a GTE (maybe same one I had) and talk about battery degradation a bit more into details plus some tips ant trick on how to keep it low but also how to test it when looking for a second hand plus some bonus tips. Having said that, I suggest you SUBSCRIBE to get a notification when I upload more videos.
      Tax on cars is a killer in The Netherlands as well and they go so far that even PHEVs are not so interesting anymore (from tax point of view) therefore my decision to switch over to a full EV. I believe a PHEV is definitely worth it and if you can park somewhere close to your house and pull a normal 220 V cable/plug for charging that will be even better. Passat Variant GTE is perfect for family with plenty of space, great comfort but also sportive when needed. Keep in mind that there is also rapid expansion of public charging network and in many countries they are still free as they want to encourage the transition to electric mobility.
      As I said, SUBSCRIBE and stay tuned.

    Hi, thanks for this great experience video. I am also interesting to bu a gte 2016-17 but there is a question in my mind. If I use this car without charging, does the petrol engine and its system charge the battery? And is it enough for regular hybrid driving? If so whats the consumption of it when never charge the battery with plug? Thanks

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you and welcome here! Without charging the GTE from an external source, the car will simply behave like a standard hybrid car. You will still benefit the regenerative breaking and occasionally some silent drives but the combustion engine will kick in most of the time. I do not have consumption figures for driving only in hybrid mode in the city but I expect you will see similar figures as any other hybrid but do not underestimate the regenerative breaking which in the city is quite high (I have a video on my channel about that topic). A friend of mine with VW Jetta 1,4 Hybrid (very similar system as GTE) has an average consumption of around 7l/100km driven only in the city. On long journeys, with one full tank and a charge I could easily go with GTE about 850Km on German highway driving and not be completely empty.
      I hope this helps. Subscribe and stay tuned!

      Hi Boris, welcome here. The only indication you can have from the car is to charge the car to FULL, turn OFF the AC, have the car in ECO mode, and look at the range that the car shows on the display. When the car was brand new, it was most likely showing 53 Km of electric range. In the video, I mention that my car was showing 46-48 Km after five years.
      You can then drive the car in a loop (to minimize wind and landscape effect) at a speed of 80 Km/h, no AC (very important), in ECO mode until the internal combustion engine kicks in (be gentle with acceleration to not force the engine start too early). This is to see if you can match the display range. Also, by multiplying the distance you did with the average consumption on the display (kWh/100km), you can get a sense of energy usable in the battery.
      I hope this helps you.
      I still plan to get my hands on a second hand Passat GTE and record a material about battery degradation and more.

      Cristef avea o dilema de a alege intre Passat GTE si Mercedes 350e. Am schimbat cateva email-uri iar mai jos sintetizez ce am raspuns:
      Nu sunt nici pe departe un expert dar impartasesc experientele mele cu PHEV si Electrice. Din cate stiu Mercedes PHEV au o raza pe electric mult mai mica - in acest caz C350e are o baterie de doar 6,3kWh (comparativ cu prima generatie de Passat GTE de 9,9kWh). Asta nu ar fi o mare problema considerand ca tu o vei folosi ca Taxi deci nu vei avea mult timp la dispozitie sa o incarci in timpul zilei (poate o singura data pe zi). Am gasit acest articol interesant, pe un blog Mercedes iar concluzia pare sa fie ca GTE e mai echilibrat pentru condusul in oras. Spatiu si consum sunt tot in favoarea la GTE ceea ce te intereseaza pe tine cel mai mult ca masina de Taxi. Vorbesc ei acolo de C350e fiind mai agil dar sincer, eu nu am sesizat niciodata ca asta sa fie o problema.
      mercedesblog.com/mercedes-c-350-e-vs-vw-passat-gte-mid-class-plug-in-hybrid-in-test/
      Connected Series de la VW iti ofera si posibilitatea de a urmari "driving behaviour/score" ceea ce poate fi interesant pentru tine in cazul in care merge altcineva pe masina. Poate Mercedes ofera acelasi lucru dar asta nu stiu.
      Am postat un comentariu la un moment dat referitor la costuri de intretinere. Dau un paste aici. Poti incerca sa te interesezi si la Mercedes pentru chestii similare dar sincer ma astept sa fie mai sus ca dehh, e Mercedes :)

      Fiabilitate - incearca sa cauti masini de vanzare cu cei mai multi kilometrii. Nu iti zic sa le cumperi pe alea dar iti va da o indicatie de fiabilitate... dar si de valoarea rezuduala dupa un anumit numar de kilometrii.
      Al meu l-am returnat la leasing cu aproape 140.000 si mergea ca noua dar am mers si mult pe electric mai ales in localitate sau la rece unde uzura e mare. Cand schimbau uleiul la service era ca nou.
      Ce am observat la Grup-ul Volkswagen este ca au adoptat platforma de la Passat (initial Jetta Hybrid cu baterie mica foarte mica apoi Golf GTE) - 1,4TSI cu hybrid si DSG-up de 6 trepte - cam pe toate modelele de PHEV pe care le-au scos. De la Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Superb IV, Octavia IV pana la Transporter T7 (tocmai ce l-au anuntat curand) pana si pe Arteon PHEV. Asta imi spune ca este o platforma solida cu ceva ani de experienta in spate.
      Daca mergi pe Passat, iti recomand jantele standard pe 17 inch mai ales ca masina o vei folosi ca taxi. Ai confort crescut, balonul mare la cauciuc si parchezi fara griji ca vei zgaria jantele pe langa borduri... crede-ma, am urcat multe si jantele mele aratau ca noi.
      Un alt aspect pe care sa-l consideri este: Passat are tractiune fata, Mercedes e pe spate. Asta poate fi problematic in zile de iarna cand soseaua nu e curatata. Aici in Olanda astia nu sunt obisnuiti cu iarna iar cand e inghet cele mai multe masini traznite/blocate pe la semafor sunt BMW sau Mercedes :)
      Nu am avut ocazia sa merg cu C350e deci parerea mea este putin subiectiva. Am mers cu un C220d la un moment dat si m-a impresionat sportivitatea la momentul acela.
      Sper ca aceasta informatie sa fie de folos.

    Salut! Ma intereseaza personal o astfel de masina. Poti sa-mi explici putin cum functioneaza incarcarea bateriei mai exact. Se incarca si prin franare sau alt mod in timp ce masina ruleaza? Se merita daca nu am posibilitatea sa o incarc acasa?

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric  3 роки тому +2

      Salut. GTE (Passat sau Golf) are 4 moduri de rulare:
      E-mode - pur electric, poti merge pana la 130KM/h, acceleratia este fantastica si e ideal pentru oras sau calatoriile relativ scurte;
      Normal mode - e ca un orice Hybrid, tine bateria incarcata pana pe la la 10-20% si porneste/opreste motorul termic in functie de puterea necesara;
      Charge Mode - in acest mod tine motorul termic putin turat astfel incat sa incarce bateria pana pe la 90% (45 km range pe display). Un lucru trebuie sa tii cont aici, in acest mod consumul de benzina este ridicat.
      GTE mode - asta e modul de FUN combinand puterea celor doua motoare. Directia este intarita si masina raspunde incredibil la acceleratie dar are si frana regenerativa.
      GTE se incarca atunci cand franezi/reduci viteza si iti arata acest lucru pe calculatorul de bord in kw/h regenerati si acul din stanga trece pe "CHARGE". Masina are si un mod "B" care suplimenteaza modul "D" drive. In acest mod masina va avea o "frana de motor" mai accentuata foarte utila la coborare de panta sau in oras cand poti conduce masina doar cu o pedala (la full stop trebuie totusi sa apesi frana). In filmuletul meu, pe la minutul 15:38 vei observa cum regeneraza energie la reducerea vitezei.
      GTE este PHEV - Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle si ai doua optiuni de a o incarca de la surse de energie externe:
      - TYPE2 - maxim 3,7 Kw, un "plin" complet dureaza cam 2,5h - inca sunt locatiii in Europa (chiar si in Romania) unde ai posibilitatea sa incarci gratis;
      - Priza de 220v - maxim 2,3 Kw, un "plin" complet dureaza cam 4 h.
      Masina vine standard cu cablu Type 2 si cu un cablu cu adaptor pentru priza 220v. Atentie mare cand achizitionezi astfel de masina sa aiba aceste cabluri ca altfel sunt cam scumpe.
      Fara posibilitatea de a incarca, sunt de parare ca pierzi un mare avantaj al acestui tip de autoturism - city drive in mod electric. Motorul va porni/opri excesiv in oras (asta daca nu mergi mai mult in Charge si apoi in E-mode). Chiar si asa, ramai cu multe alte avantaje si este o masina pe care o recomand.

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric  3 роки тому +2

      Very good question. When you are in GTE mode, the car is "ready" to react fast so it will keep the car in a low gear and higher RPM (and keep on charging the battery when full torque is not needed or when reducing speed). In addition (no matter the mode) the car has a "kick down" option on the acceleration pedal. When you press the pedal to the floor, you feel a bit of a kick on the pedal and that is the sign/moment to the car to “give best power”. It will change few gears lower and put you back in the chair. The switch is quite fast except maybe taking a bit longer in case you drive in E-Mode. You will feel a bit of a hick-up as the car will have to start the petrol engine plus change gears lower. However, even just in E-Mode the acceleration is quite impressive as you have the instant torque available from the electric motor.
      There is also an option to change gears manually from the paddles on the steering wheel but honestly I can count on my fingers how often I used these in last five years.
      Remember, GTE goes to 100Km/h in less than 8 seconds. Not too bad for such a car, I believe 😊
      If you feel like having fun, I suggest driving in GTE mode.

      Hi Marko, welcome here. Charging the battery of GTE from 0-100% takes between 2h45min (Type 2 charger) and 4h30mins or more (at 220v domestic outlet). On long jurneys, usually you have the car charged when you leave and will charge at destination plus some benzine refill on the way if the journey is over 800 ish Km. Your comute distance of 25Km is somehow ideal for this car but you need to find a way to charge it to get the full benefits (maybe a 220v outlet at work?). Without the ability to charge, you will still get the benefits of the hybrid drive (e.g. great energy recuperation when breaking, good power when needed) but miss out on electric driving for large distance.

      Hi James, I think it still makes sense. You will "loose" the advantage of driving full electric on regular base with full battery but you will have all the other benefits of a hybrid vehicle e.g. surprising instant power, regenerative breaking and overall great efficiency. Taking about regenerative breaking, do not underestimate this. I have a material on my channel "One pedal driving..." and you can see how high can be. On my current EV, in one year (mix driving of city and long distances), regenerative energy is 25%!
      On occasions, you will have the chance to charge the car and you will enjoy the 30-40 Km free/cheap.
      In some countries you might have also some tax benefits as well not to mention that PHEVs are still subsidized in many countries (from their new price) or they were when they were new making them price attractive as a second hand purchase.

      When the car was delivered new, it came with a domestic charger that you can plug to your standard domestic plug at home and to the Type 2 charging port of the car. So, if you have that charger, nothing else is needed except a good electrical connection handling 10 AMPs and you will be able to charge the car from 0-100 in about 4,5 yours. If you wish to charge in about 3 hours (fastest you can get in the GTE), you will need to consider a stand alone Type to charger which I will not recommend considering the costs and little gain that will bring, I hope this helps!

    just thinking, at my place electricity costs 0,20EUR/1kWh, I thought this takes about 0,18Wh/1km but as you say its 0,23Wh so it is like 4,60EUR/100km. Now its nice when the gas price is so high, but before we had diesel for 1.20 and with diesel car you can make it for 5.5l/100km which is 6.50EUR/100km so its not such a huge difference if you compare the price of the vehicle (e.g. passat 2.0tdi 140kW vs passat GTE 115kW/160kW). For the first 5 years the service feed are better for GTE but if the battery goes low after 7-10 years then its really expensive.
    Although the comfort of E-drive is much better than TDI. If you can plug it at home or at work its fine.

      Hi Igor. Welcome here!
      We need to use either best case or worst case for both cars/scenarios both in terms of energy/fuel cost and consumption. I mentioned 230wh/Km as being a “conservative figure” due to the fact that this figure is based mainly on city driving and by the way, it includes charging losses and energy used for pre-conditioning the car in hot/cold days before departure. I’m quite sure you can’t achieve 5,5l/100km with mainly city driving and pre-condition the car with a similar size diesel car.
      I currently drive a full EV and depending where the charging happens the most, the overall pure driving cost is between 1/3-2/3 of a Diesel but can be even lower if there are options for “free” charging. Fuel prices went up but also energy prices and more so public charging.
      As an example, in 2016 (in NL) I was paying 0,26EUR/kWh at one of the public charge point close to my place (now there are 8x2 in short 5 mins walking distance) and now the price is 0,37EUR/kWh - both prices are without VAT.
      Yes, battery is a main component in an EV/PHEV however, most modern cars have proper battery management systems (both thermal and charging management) and that keeps the degradation relatively low over time - I guess only time will tell but you have a valid concern “in case of”.
      I will make separate material about charging, costs, long term experience with my EV therefore I encourage you to subscribe if not done already.

      @@ZEFElectric my situation is different. I am thinking about buying used Passat GTE. Like 2015-2017 with cca 150 000km driven so similar to yours for about 18-21000€. I'm not sure whether it's a good idea. Currently I have Passat 2.0 TSI 2018 and we drive very often 2 times a day 25km so it seems like I'd be driving big part of the time on battery. Yet I'm not sure about the reliability. Also other thing is that it might not be the best investment to change the cars, because if I wanted to sell the GTE in 5 years, maybe it would have much lower price than the current vehicle I own. For you when you buy new car this really doesn't matter.
      Do you charge at home or on some chargers? 0.25€/kWh is quite a lot.

      @@igor256 I understand your dilemma. Buying a new/used car right now is not a good moment but considering you have an equally sized car already, if you find a good deal on an GTE you have a good chance to make the swap cost neutral or even with some money left on your pocket (depends on the mileage on the current car). Many people are running away from EV/PHEV because of this fear of battery failure (I come back on this below) but also PHEV is appealing to many these days and in many countries diesel is discouraged so your current car is probably also on demand and it might still hold a good high value.
      In Passat GTE, they used 98S 28AH Samsung SDI cells which are NMC type of lithium batteries. These type of batteries will generally have a degradation of 20% after about 2000 full cycles (I know age also play a role but also how the battery was used or abused) but the good part is that this rate of degradation is not so accelerated after reaching this point. In my case, I estimated I charged the battery with about 12MWh energy which is close to 1200 full cycles and my estimation was 10-15% battery degradation so, somehow the maths are adding up. Now, question is what will happen in the next 5 years with same usage… probably the degradation will go to 20-25% but the car can still be used with smaller EV range but with full benefits of hybrid. By then, I’m quite sure that there will be service centers that will re-condition batteries in EVs (I could already find almost brand new battery for GTE on some online stores for reasonable prices - search for 3Q0915590E).
      I do not have the possibility to charge at home so most of my charging was at work or with public charging but occasionally I use to charge on domestic 220V and while traveling elsewhere.

    Hi, have you ever change the 12V battery? I have GTE, and I find that the engine can start-stop many many many x5 times when on hybrid mode, will it damage the battery faster than a normal start-stop car?

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric  3 роки тому +2

      GTE on “hybrid mode” if there are few kilometers of range in the battery (car computer only show range in battery) or no extreme cold outside temperature, it will basically stop combustion engine every single time you decelerate not just when car is stopped like in the case of a standard “start and stop” system. Despite that, the 12v battery was still the original battery that was on the car.
      Maybe the “trick” in my case was charging habits as explained in my video. As a result, no much of the start-stop used in the city where will be otherwise excessively used. Another trick was that when I was approaching home (or destination) I managed/anticipated the range left in the battery to drive in the city on “E mode” pure electric. If that was not possible, I switch on “Charge mode” just to avoid excessive start-stop. Note: combustion engine will still stop at traffic lights but with a lot less frequency.

    I am thinking of buying this model. Used offcourse. Because at first i am Dutch and second i am not rich.🥺
    Have a diesel car at the moment and the Dutch roadtax is really horrible. And my thoughts about this VW is that it is a really nice driving car. Bringing me good comfort while riding and also on the longer trips. Normally i am getting backpain quit easily when driving in a car. Within 30 minutes. That is why i take my motorcycle when i really have to make a trip greater then 200 km'ters.
    I know this will seem strange to most people but hell, it is my back.🙈 On a bike i can slightly move and also have a more straightup positioning. And also can push up with my legs.
    How did you experience sitting in your car ? And last but not least. The sound of the audio. Does it have a good and punchy bass ?
    From what i could see when you showed us you electricity providers this is telling me that you also come from the Netherlands.
    The car that i want to buy is from 2015. I have seen the history of it. In 24 december 2019 the battery was replaced by a new one because it was degredated to much. This was a concern to me because i though what if this should be the normall interval for the battery needing to be replaced. Then it would still be an expensive car. But in your video you told us that you did not have such a strong degradation of the battery. So maybe it was a faulty one that they needed to replace. And mabe it is a good thing because now it has a newer battery in it then original.
    Buying a new car can be fun but also a bit stressfull. And in the end always a bit of a gamble.
    Greetings from Holland.👍 What are you driving today if i may ask ?

      Hi Kees, welcome here. Yes, I do live in The Netherlands and I know very well how painful are the taxes on cars, especially on diesel. On the Passat GTE I had, I found the chairs quite comfortable on long trip (I believe all are equipped with “Ergocomfort” from VW). Good support (and adjustable) under the knee, good side support and head rest. The only downside was that on very long summer trips my butt/back was occasionally sweating but I guess you can’t really avoid that if the seats are not ventilated (most likely we talk about another class of car). My car had also the massage function which I used occasionally yet, did not make a big difference to me. Sound system (I had the standard one) was quite OK, I will say acceptable. Getting a car with replaced battery only 1,5 years ago sounds like a really good deal to me. Time and charging behaviors are big degradation factors for the battery and unfortunately, I’ve seen many PHEVs not being charged or left stationary with empty/full battery for long period of time, all these are to be avoided. Enjoy your GTE when you get it!
      My replacement car is a Tesla Model 3 Long Range. I actually have more videos on my channel with both cars, check it out here: ua-cam.com/channels/97v1zI3mW1aEHc19vljswg.html

    I previous own passat b8 2.0tdi (40km=25miles=diesel cost £2.8 one way) so daily commuting cost is £5.6
    Now I just changed the job, commuting one way is 40km (9.9kw=40km=£0.13 unit rate*9.9=£1.28 at home, free at office)
    So everyday I may save £5.6-1.28=£4.32 (two way),annually save around £900. five yrs, save £4500. It looks like GTE total cost may close to the 2.0tdi version (consider the purchase, both are used car 3-5yrs old, 80k mileage). There is free exclusive socket in office car park. charge battery totally free. I am looking for saving fuel cost and geting some new feeling with PHEV.
    Q1: if I fully charged the battery 9.9kW, unpluged, rest in the car for long time, i.e. 6 hours at road side. How long I can use the AC (cold/heat) without start petrol engine?
    Q2: During car plug in charging period, can I sit in the car for the rest, and use the AC?
    Q3: My daily commuting distance is 40km one way (can plug at office car park before return home), it looks like I could use pure electricity motor, saving fuel, this is my expectation, however if in the winter (UK average 0 celsius degree), how about the AC heat effect when E-mode. (petrol engine coolant is cold, without start)
    Q4: My daily commuting may lead the battery 0%-100%-0% heavy circulation, the battery degrade may go worse in short time?

      @ZEFElectric  2 роки тому +4

      Hi handong950, welcome here!
      Before answering the specific questions, you will need to slightly adjust your calculations to reflect the day to day reality (general aspects valid for any PHEV):
      - First of all, 9,9kWh battery capacity is when the car was new and is the gross capacity. I learned that in order to protect the battery, the car has a “buffer” so net you will not be using the full 9,9kWh capacity. Even when my car was new, from a complete zero to full, a charging session (without scheduling heating or cooling - I will comment more about this) will only take about 8-8,5kWh battery. However, with that amount of energy I could go close to 50 Km in almost ideal conditions (20 ish Celsius with no AC running) and driving 80-90Km/h - that will be a consumption of approx. 160Wh/Km (keep this in mind for later calculations).
      - That leads me to the next aspect you need to consider: driving conditions of your 40Km commute - highway, city, country roads? Above speed of 80Km/h, every 10Km will “cost” you about 15Wh extra in consumption. So, for example, driving 100Km/h will consume about 190Wh/Km so the full electric range will go down. The most economic conditions would be a mix of country roads and villages in combination with regenerative braking in B-Mode (check my videos for that);
      - You calculations are in ideal conditions but weather will indeed play a role here. In winter, the range will be significantly affected and could go as low as only half in “extreme” cold temperature. UK has similar climate as NL so, use 25-30 Km range in your calculations for some of the most cold months. In hot weather, the range is also affected but to much lower extend (I will say up to 20% lower from “ideal” conditions). However, there is a trick to pre-condition the car before departure and that helps to maximize your electric range but also comfort;
      - Last aspect you need to consider is that the car would have some battery degradation - let’s say 10% or so (I think some of that degradation is “hidden” also in the buffer I mention).
      Now, let me address your specific questions:
      Q1: The HVAC will take between 1kW and 2kW power so that will give you some good hours of “camping”. However, you will have to “trick” the car not to shut down. I believe keeping the car in “Neutral” with Parking Break will do the trick but will keep the car computer running. Another trick will be to schedule repetitive HVAC sessions of let’s say 30 minutes intervals;
      Q2: When plugged, the car will only recirculate air if you control the HVAC from inside the car (seat heating will still work if available as an option). However, there is again a trick to bypass that - control HVAC from the app on your phone or schedule it from the car infotainment. Note: you will need to pay a subscription in order to use the app (see a separate video on my channel about that) - remember, this car does not have fast charge option so you will be sitting long time in the car to charge. I occasionally did this when I was on long trips and need to rest my eyes yet, got the advantage of a free charging stop on my way (e.g. rest areas on DE/AT had free chargers some years ago or at shopping centers);
      Q3: Yes, winter will affect the range not just because of the HVAC but also because oil is cold in gearbox (viscosity is different), tires, and generally the battery doesn’t like cold. I find it worse when is below -5/-10 Celsius and you should not be surprised if the petrol engine will kick in even if there is plenty of “juice” in the battery. The heat from the running petrol engine will be also used to warm up the battery and “bring it back to life”. There is a way to minimize winter effect (also summer) which is to “pre-condition” the car before leaving. From the app or schedule it in the infotainment, you can turn on HVAC (10-30mins before departure) and you will find a nice and comfortable car ready to drive.
      Q4: 0% to 100% charge/discharge cycles does not affect the battery as such but leaving it for long time charged at 100% or at 0% are the “battery killers”. Try to schedule the 100% charge to finish 30mins before your departure and plug the car as soon as you arrive with 0%. In the car settings, there is a minimum charge level that you want the car to go to as soon as you plug it in. When that level is reached, the charging will be paused and resumed automatically some time before the set departure time to charge to the desired level.
      Conclusion: I believe your commute distance is just about right for this car but you should expect that the petrol engine will kick in for the last kilometers of your journey. I find this PHEH a great balance between economy and sport, short vs long trips and offers plenty of space with a comfortable ride. Highly recommended! In UK, I believe you also have some advantages over ICE with congestion charges, taxes and maybe free parking in some areas.
      Is not all just about the numbers. I was a TDI fan myself yet, after driving this PHEV, TDI feels like driving tractors. Take a test ride and you will be impressed.
      I hope this helps. I plan to shoot some more materials about second hand Passat GTE so I suggest you subscribe and stay tuned!

      @@ZEFElectric Thank you very much for your kindly reply. Really helpful. I have subscribed and followed you.
      I am glad to hear you owned the 2.0tdi and PHEV both before.
      Further questions or discussion.
      Q4, As the 2.0tdi is 1500kg, PHEV is 1700kg, you mentioned the PHEV sport feeling is good, did you worry the control performance i.e. change lane at high speed, drive in bend. 200kg difference means 3-4 adult, for 2.0tdi, it is full load or just driver. I can feel the major difference of control feeling 2.0 tdi. I guess PHEV use the same spring and absorber with 2.0tdi version, so driving PHEV may like full loading general passat?
      Q5, What type of 9.9kw battery inside? Ni-Cd or Lithium? We understand for the chemical battery, avoid the 100% or 0% for long time,that will save the battery life. I drove toyota prius Ni-Cd battery before, the toyota's strategy is try to keep the circulation in 25%-75% range, that will save battery life, may up to 10 years. Do you know the brand new battery replacement price?
      Q6, We understand for the EV, the ideal condition is no AC, speed fixed 50-80kph, countryside road.
      I am looking 3-4yrs,80k mileage PHEV, I am thinking one possible way to evaluate battery healthy, may ask seller fully charged, and drive style as above ideal condition, if the range can go up 40km, that will be OK?
      Q7, For this PHEV, AC heating, does this car's heating source come from engine coolant only? without PTC heat?
      Q8, if Q7 answer is yes, in the winter, even I pluged before departure, the inside of car still can not be preheated?

      @@handong950 fun of TDI not the 2.0 specific.
      Q4: The first Passat GTE with 9,9kWh battery is slightly lighter 1645Kg comparing with 1730Kg on the refresh 2020 model with bigger battery. I’m not an expert in suspension as such but I would expect GTE to have some slightly different settings in the suspension to reflect different weight and weight distribution overall on the car. Remember, center of gravity is also much lower which helps overall handling of the car. I can tell you for sure that the car I had felt stable on the road (high or low speed, loaded or empty). If that is your concern, you might consider a car with a DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) option but I personally think is not worth it. These models are not so common, expensive and added complexity means more service troubles. I often use to do long family trips with the car loaded at max and never really felt that the car is not agile enough - same when I was driving empty.
      One thing I will recommend is to get a car with Lane Keep Assist option (I think the Adaptive Cruise Control comes as standard on GTE) - awesome on long journeys 😉
      Q5: The battery in Passat GTE is Lithium-Ion. Follow this link (photos.app.goo.gl/raH7u2WtY3cfNabJ9) and you will see a folder with multiple photos of how the battery looks like in this car (not from my car but I found them before on some research). The article number is 3Q0915590E and if you do some research you will find it at approx. 3.000 EUR second hand (I know, you do not know what you get) and up to about 13.000 EUR brand new (not really worth it I believe).
      Q6: Yes, that will be an idea but you will need to drive in some kind of a loop to eliminate the wind effect as well (do not underestimate that). I plan to do a separate video just about “measuring” battery degradation with another Passat GTE and that will include the charging part, time, energy so on. I finally got in touch with a guy that is willing to do this together, we just need to plan it in the coming weeks.
      Q7: Passat GTE has a separate PTC (resistive) heater as well so you can get heat pure by electricity.
      Q8: Not relevant but I can assure you, my car was always warm and comfortable in winter times before departure 😉

    Just a fact, 30 t. km per year means spending ~6% of your life in a car

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric  3 роки тому

      You are definitelly right about that. Yet, with all available active driver assist systems, there is so much more you can do in this car while driving long distances... I recall a particular trip where I was on German highways with Adaptice Cruise Control + Lane Keep Assist engaged and have many (business) calls for 5-6 hours... that went on without realizing.

      I know for sure what I had :) My model had the Adaptive Matrix LED option which follows with a “U shape” of shade other cars ahead. You can’t miss it as it is more or less a “light show” on roads with no public lights. If you look at other models that has only LED you will also notice the interior of the headlights looks slightly different.
