- While often overlooked, Florida offers some of the best crappie fishing in the US. Blessed with year-round growing seasons and lots of water the Sunshine State shines when it comes to crappie. We hopped aboard with professional crappie angler TC Lloyd and long lined jigs tipped with live Chartreuse Fire Dye minnows on Orange Lake near Gainesville and caught dozens of slab size crappie while filming this episode of Pautzke Outdoors.

Everyone sells Fire Dye online. Some stores carry it as well, depending on where you live.
Where is orange lake?
In Florida in alachua county,south of Hawthorne about 2 miles on sr 301 rt before lochloosa. It's connected to lake lochloosa through cross creek.
The crappie you referred to as a slab black crappie is in fact a white crappie. Your video clearly shows 6 spikes on its dorsal fin. Black crappies have 7 or 8 spikes and sometimes 9. Both have the same coloration which varies some by environment and when you see a real dark one, it is a male either spawning or ready to spawn whether it is a black or white crappie. You can also tell the difference by shape.
Orange Lake does not have White Crappie in it, only Black.
@@scottwhitefishing LOL...there isn't a "White Crappie" within 70 miles or more from Orange Lake.
